Becoming a more equitable librarian is an ongoing process. In the face of the last decade's events and increased public awareness of issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA), library workers in music libraries can do things to create the space in our teaching for optimal creativity and connection by and with our library users. As the editors of Music Information Literacy: Inclusion and Advocacy (Library Juice Press, 2024), Kathleen A. Abromeit and Dyani Sabin bring together contributions that imagine what it would be like to expand our inclusion structures so that we increasingly recognize and accommodate differences in our music libraries. The ways librarians teach and assist students must change to amplify the voices of those who have been traditionally marginalized and create effective and equitable libraries and classrooms. Doing so is a multi-part process, where critical information literacy overlaps with self-reflection as a librarian and a deep understanding that our students have identities and experiences that influence how they navigate their world. Many of our students have experienced trauma from the generational oppression of systemic racism, gender fluidity, invisible disabilities, discrimination, or poverty. Ongoing trauma triggers toxic stress that can rewire parts of the brain and impact one's ability to process information, formulate questions, and feel safe enough to be creative and in the zone of ideas. The chapters in the volume are authored by librarians who have actively been learning and self-reflecting on what is needed to invite users into their libraries and teaching spaces fully. The book is divided into three sections: Critical Theories, Concepts, & Reflections, Bringing Underrepresentation to the Forefront, and Supporting Activism. Each chapter includes case studies and discussion questions supporting ideas and concepts. A sample reading guide for each chapter is included as well. Kathleen A. Abromeit is the Head of the Conservatory Library at Oberlin College and Conservatory, and Dyani Sabin is a writer based in the Midwest. How does one reconcile a dual identity and create art that resonates across cultures? Join us for an inspiring episode of Beyond the Art, where we welcome Dyani White Hawk, a remarkable artist whose journey is shaped by her Native and non-native upbringing. Raised in Madison, Wisconsin, Dyani's story is one of resilience and creativity, influenced profoundly by her mother's efforts to reconnect with their Lakota roots. From her involvement in snowboarding and hip-hop subcultures to her diverse job experiences, Dyani's path was anything but conventional. Her early artistic talents were nurtured at an alternative high school, leading her to further develop her skills at Haskell Indian Nations University. We delve into the rich dialogue between Lakota art forms and modern artistic practices. Dyani's unique perspective, informed by both Indigenous and Western art histories, challenges existing hierarchies in the art world and highlights the often-overlooked contributions of Indigenous artists. Through an exploration of modern abstract painting and traditional Lakota elements, Dyani shares the thoughtful decision-making process behind her choice of artistic mediums. This discussion emphasizes the importance of recognizing and valuing the creative output of Indigenous artists, pushing the boundaries of conventional art narratives.Dyani also sheds light on the significant challenges faced by Indigenous artists in gaining recognition. Her powerful "Listen" video installation immerses viewers in native languages, urging them to reflect on their own familiarity with these tongues. As we navigate the contemporary art landscape, Dyani offers practical advice for emerging Native artists, emphasizing the importance of authenticity and community. We also celebrate her recent accolades and the empowering role of financial support in her practice. Her story underscores the importance of honest representation, resilience, and the collective effort to elevate Native voices in public art spaces. Join us for an enriching episode that bridges cultures and inspires future generations.

Episode No. 610 features artist Dyani White Hawk and curator Kelly Montana. White Hawk is included in "Rising Sun: Artists in an Uncertain America" at the African American Museum in Philadelphia and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. The exhibition presents new works that examine the question, "Is the sun rising or setting on the experiment of American democracy?" The exhibition was organized by a six-person curatorial team and is on view through October 8. White Hawk (Sičáŋǧu Lakota) makes works multiple media that often foreground Lakota art forms and cultural knowledge and blend both Native American and non-Native interests and art histories. Her work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver and the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston. She's also been in group shows at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, Ark., and more. Montana is the curator of "Si Lewen: The Parade" which is at the Menil Drawing Institute in Houston through September 3. The Parade is an epic narrative that unfolds across 63 drawings. Lewen, a Polish-born immigrant who lived and worked in New York and Pennsylvania, witnessed the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp in 1945 while serving in the United States Army. In the 1950s he published a graphic novel that responded to the horrors he encountered as part of his war-time experience. This exhibition is the first in the United States to bring together the complete set of works from The Parade.

We are grateful to share Dyani White Hawk and Jovan C. Speller taking part in a podcast format we are calling The Long Conversation -- one that offers folks the chance to cultivate a thread of ideas and relationships without the presence of an interviewerPlease find extensive show notes, transcripts, and links on the episode site. Dyani White Hawk (Sičáŋǧu Lakota) is a visual artist and independent curator based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Most recently, her work was included in the 2022 Whitney Biennial, and also presented as a major solo exhibition at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art. Dyani also previously served as Gallery Director and Curator for the All My Relations Gallery in Minneapolis.Jovan C. Speller is a multidisciplinary artist based in Minnesota. She has received a McKnight Visual Artist Fellowship and the Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation Minnesota Art Prize. Her installation In Lottie's Living Room was featured in the High Visibility Exhibtion at the Plains Art Museum, and her exhibition Nurturing, and Other Rituals of Protection was recently presented by the Minneapolis Institute of Art.This Long Conversation was an experiment, one born from a desire to share with a wider audience what might happen when these two friends and collaborators had the space to relax into a conversation about life, art, family, land, and whichever topics and contexts emerged through that flow. In the time that transpires here, we hear both artists at a point of transition between exhibitions -- with major projects ahead -- reflecting on how the central presence of Black and Native women help us understand the dimensions of the cultural moment we all are walking through.Their time together opens with the power of intergenerational knowledge in their collaborative work Choosing Home, and expands to consider Jovan's time spent with relatives in rural North Carolina learning family history, and Dyani's time with Native women across the continent who speak the languages of their people. Rooted in these experiences, the conversation asks how artists, institutions, and communities can better honor and more deeply support the cultural histories and lived experiences that animate these connections.Land is a constant presence and relational force throughout, ground on which we're left with a deeper understanding of these artists' creative practice but also with a sense of the kind of futures we could all inhabit.High Visibility is an initiative of Art of the Rural and Plains Art Museum. Gratitude to the National Endowment for the Arts and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts for their support of this work.

Nate is in love. Maddy as a new job. Cassie is spiraling. Kat doesn't love Ethan. Jules is jealous of Elliot. And, what happened with Fez? This week on Womanity-Women in Unity Dr. Amaleya Goneos-Malka talks to Prof. Ntombizozuko (Zozo) Dyani-Mhango, who is a professor in the Department of Jurisprudence, Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria and inaugural fellow of the Pan African Scientific Research Council. Prof. Dyani-Mhango describes three critical functions in  her portfolio: teaching, research and academic citizenship. She highlights her research on international criminal justice in Africa, where she considers African Union member states' obligations for international crimes, the power struggles between the African Union and international criminal court, and South Africa's obligations to hold perpetrators accountable. We acknowledge the tremendous role that women play in peace, justice and security. We note the need for more women to be more involved in negotiations and occupy leadership positions. Considering the South African context and COVID-19 we unpack some of the challenges faced by students learning online, such as: lack of data, adequate privacy to attend class, and the ability to engage. In light of this point we debate if access to the Internet should be a human right. Prof. Dyani-Mhango shares aspects of the Pan African Scientific Research Council as an institution to bring together African researchers and Africa focussed research. We discuss the lack of women at the top of academic hierarchies and the foundations that female academics are laying to make the journey easier for upcoming women in their fields. Tune in for more…

"So many of my friends had pop star dreams and we're all at this age where we're building a life that can include our creative talents and passions in a sustainable way. It had its public release (Zoom-style) the week that George Floyd's murder the death of Regis Korchinski-Paquet enflamed the news cycle. It got me thinking about the way that the grace of time is often denied to immigrant and racialized communities, who are denied public histories and ensnared in cycles of outrage.
