Just imagine if you could sit down with a solicitor specialising in Intellectual Property (IP) and ask them everything you need to know at the beginning of your tech journey. Well, we did just that with Kerry Russell, an IP Lawyer at Shakespeare Martineau, which is one of our Associate Sponsors. Kerry gives us an overview of IP and the main IP rights that people need to know about, then she responds to some questions sent in by our community. If you want to go straight to the questions then please skip to 22 minutes into the episode.Question 1: What's the best way to protect your side project from being copied?Question 2: What do you think is currently the most efficient method of commercialising shared IP and how do you see this evolving over the next 5 years?Question 3: How quickly do you think the law will catch up to advanced technology and its uses in assigning ownership and governance over IP - for instance using NFTs to assign IP ownership is currently possible. The conversation ranges from conflict theory, economic failures, regulatory capture, the social justice impacts of climate change that are leading ultimately to systems collapse. The question is - what can we do about it? The answer is: Tackling the challenges in local small community groups where integrating wisdom, common sense and new knowledge works. We discuss the challenges we all face when civic systems implode from expensive political, bureaucratic and legal bottlenecks. White paper-glutted and gentrified systems are often not grounded in earth wisdom and natural sciences. This leaves us victim to degenerative behaviors, where non-natural interlocking systems stifle innovation and create waste, decay and stagnation. Involving the community in early problem-solving is about conservation, preservation and regeneration.

How did you get here?Dash Tabor shares her journey to becoming the founder of an AI machine learning startup.Dash Tabor didn't expect to work in tech, never mind to start her own deep-tech company specialising in the application of AI for small and incomplete datasets.Growing up, she felt that tech wasn't her, that it was too complicated and too ‘mathy'. However, after completing a Masters in City Planning and Sustainable Development, Dash needed a job and landed an admin role in a tech company. From this point, she started to develop an interest and passion for data, and so her journey to tech founder began. She gathered different skills, learning how to spot opportunities both in tech and in the market, and she watched different people doing things in different ways.Living and working in London it was the busy and over-crowded tube journeys she had to take every morning that gave Dash the impetus to found her own company, developing technology that could predict the peaks at London tube stations on just small amounts of data.Since this point in 2020, she has moved to Sheffield setting up her business, Tubr, at Sheffield Technology Parks. She has hired, secured customers, gained funding from Angels and Venture Capitalists, and Tubr has patent pending technology.Dash says that the point she stopped being scared of failure was the point at which the business started doing well.Hear about all of this and much more in the 20 minute interview between Dash and Sarah Lister.Subscribe to the podcastIf you'd like to have new episodes of the show appear right in your podcast player, you can subscribe via our page on Apple Podcasts and follow the show on Spotify, or search for us in your podcast app of choice!Notes and linksDash was interviewed online by Sarah Lister, Membership Coordinator at Sheffield Digital, on 9th May 2023.Every episode comes with a list of links to the companies we reference.TUBRSheffield Technology ParksDash on LinkedInSheffield Women in TechSheffield DigitalDid we miss something you're looking for? Imagine being born with a gift for music, playing piano, drums, and bass so well that you were recruited by Julliard and other top music schools, but then giving it up because it was too easy and you really loved basketball. That was the path chosen by Alex McLean, who didn't play organized ball until he was 18 and then had to learn the game at two junior colleges. His dedication eventually earned a college scholarship to Liberty University, where Alex became a prolific scorer and rebounded. But though he got good enough to star in several pro leagues overseas, Alex took another diversion when he gave up playing to start his coaching career. An unexpected call from the Washington Wizards led to him overseeing G-League assignments, and he worked his way up to lead the team's player development. Alex has also become a go-to coach in women's basketball, working with the likes of Kiki Rice and Paige Bueckers, and recently started a school with his business partner to give back to the DC community.Listen up as Alex shares:·       Why he turned down a lucrative pro deal in China to become a GA for $800 a month at Liberty U·       How being the first player in the gym for a year can help you win a roster spot·       What Paige Bueckers finishing a training session with one shoe showed about her·       How John Wall's Achilles injury and a commitment to serving helped establish his NBA career·       Why doing the unseen work today prepares you for tomorrow's opportunityLearn from Alex's lead-by-example mentality on Instagram @alexmcleanbball
