#107: Why Burnout Isn't a Workload Problem

Executive Commute With Jayson Krause

Most leaders think burnout comes from too much work. So they respond with wellness programs, lighter workloads, and lunch hour yoga. Then nothing changes. In this episode of The Executive Commute, Jayson Krause sits down with Dr. Tianne Foster, physician, burnout researcher, and author of Reality Check, to unpack what actually drives burnout and why most organizations are solving the wrong problem. Trained across Canada, the US, and the UK, Dr. Foster became obsessed with burnout after a senior physician told her entire class to get out of medicine while they still could. Her conclusion: burnout isn't an individual weakness. It's a mismatch between people and the environment they work in, and it starts with leadership. In this episode: The six workplace factors that drive burnout (workload is only one of them) Why nurses turn down pay raises in toxic workplaces, and what that means for retention How to tell the difference between burnout, depression, and a hard season Why treating burnout as an individual problem lets organizations off the hook The Yale finding that high engagement scores can be an early warning, not a win The petri dish question every leader should ask about their culture If your best people are running on fumes and your wellness budget isn't moving the needle, this conversation explains what's actually happening and where to intervene. Rhaja Rose grew up in Arizona — raised by his mom and stepfather without his father in the picture. Despite a passion for football that could have taken him somewhere, he dropped out of high school and joined the Crips. A home invasion led to a murder charge that sent him to Arizona's prison system for 12 years. In this episode of Locked In with Ian Bick, Rhaja opens up about surviving some of Arizona's most violent prisons — the gangs the politics and the daily violence that defines life behind bars. But halfway through his sentence something shifted. He dialed in, earned a college degree from inside his cell, turned his life completely around and came home with a new purpose — becoming a tattoo artist and building a life nobody saw coming. _____________________________________________ #gang #TrueCrime #prison _____________________________________________ Thank You To CASH APP For Sponsoring This Episode: Download Cash App Today: https://click.cash.app/ui6m/6pao71et #CashAppPod Cash App is a financial services platform, not a bank. Hi Peeps! As many of you know, I have another podcast I have been hosting since 2023 called "Bloody Angola". Currently I am in the middle of a series called 50 shades of evil, where I cover (1) notorious criminal from each of the 50 states.  This week I started a 4 part series on serial killer Ted Bundy. I wanted to promote this particular series on all of the podcast I do because I spent so much time on the research of Bundy and..I think my listeners on all my podcasts would enjoy hearing it (the audiences throughout vary some).  So I am going to drop this across all my feeds and I really hope you find it entertaining.  Much Love!Part 1 of a 4 part seriesJim Chapman brings you into the shadows of one of America's most notorious serial killers: Ted Bundy. Behind the handsome face, law-school smile, and easy charm lurked a predator who terrorized the United States from 1974-1978.From his first known murders in Washington state to his cross-country killing spree, daring prison escapes, and final rampage in Florida, Bundy left behind a trail of at least thirty confirmed victims— young women who never stood a chance against his calculated manipulation. Jim examines how a seemingly ordinary man used his intelligence, good looks, and fake casts and crutches to lure victims into his Volkswagen Beetle, and how he repeatedly slipped through the fingers of law enforcement. You'll hear about the shocking courtroom moments, the media circus that turned him into a celebrity monster, and the psychological profile that still fascinates criminologists today. From his troubled childhood to his final days on death row, this is the complete, unflinching story of Ted Bundy—the charming killer whose crimes changed the way America hunts monsters.Warning: This episode contains graphic descriptions of violence and SA. Child Life On Call: Parents of children with an illness or medical condition share their stories with a child life specialist

What happens when your instincts tell you something is wrong—but you're dismissed again and again? For many parents, the journey to a diagnosis begins with a gut feeling—and the courage to persist in seeking answers. This week, Katie sits down with Nikki McIntosh, author and advocate, to share the story of her son Miles, who was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) at just 18 months old. After noticing delays in his ability to stand and bear weight, Nikki followed her instincts despite initial dismissal—ultimately leading to a life-changing diagnosis. Nikki shares what those early days looked like—from navigating testing and procedures to receiving the diagnosis that changed everything. She opens up about the grief, fear, and urgency that followed, and how she quickly stepped into the role of advocate, building a care team and learning how to navigate complex medical systems in real time..  If you've ever questioned your instincts or felt lost navigating a diagnosis, this conversation offers validation, practical guidance, and hope. The birds are singing in the mornings, tiny green shoots are pushing through the soil, and the mountain laurel is starting to bloom. It's not fully spring yet, but you can sense that something new is beginning. And I love how often God works the same way in our lives. In this episode of Small Beginnings with Sara, I share what the first signs of spring have been teaching me about the way God brings renewal to our hearts. We'll talk about noticing the small beginnings of a new season, pulling the weeds while they are small, and allowing God to prune what is old so new growth can flourish.Song of Solomon reminds us,“See! The winter is past… flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come.”Maybe the first signs of spring are already showing up in your life.Together we'll reflect on how to slow down, notice where God is working, and make space for the new things He is growing.Because sometimes the most beautiful seasons begin with the smallest signs.

Apology: Helen Veit's audio has a lot of “ducking”, in which a word or multiple words were clipped. This happened during the recording, and cannot be fixed in the audio edit. We'll work hard to make sure this never happens again. In nineteenth-century America, cookbook authors, concerned doctors, and food reformers believed that children had a problem with food. Children, reformers worried, would “eat anything and everything.” If they were to grow into healthy adults, they needed a special diet—“children's food”—which meant that for the first time in human history children would have to eat differently from everyone else. That moment was one step along a path that my guest Helen Zoe Veit traces in her new book Picky: How American Children Became the Fussiest Eaters in History. Beginning in a mid-nineteenth century world in which children routinely ate oysters, organ meats, sauerkraut, and richly spiced dishes alongside adults, she carries the story forward to our own moment—an era of childhood obesity, nutritional anxiety, supermarket abundance, and the widespread assumption that children are “food rejectors by nature.” But as Veit argues, mass childhood pickiness is not deeply biological. It is overwhelmingly cultural. And culture, unlike biology, can change.Helen Zoe Veit is Associate Professor of History at Michigan State University. She specializes in American food history of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and is the author and editor of numerous works on food, morality, and culture. Picky is her latest book.Chapters0:00 - Introduction 3:02 - 19th Century Children Ate Everything 5:30 - Mark Twain and Edith Wharton's Childhoods 14:02 - Why Doctors Were Concerned 24:20 - The First Signs of Pickiness in the 1930s 33:18 - Benjamin Spock and Clara Davis 45:51 - The Supermarket Revolution 52:16 - Parental Guilt and Contradictory Advice 1:00:15 - Solutions and Hope for Change 1:07:59 - Why Food History Matters

If your manufacturing project keeps stalling, blowing budgets, or needing “rescues,” there's a good chance you picked the wrong factory. In this episode, Adrian and Renaud break down why manufacturer–product mismatch is one of the most common and expensive mistakes importers still make in 2026, especially when adding electronics, higher quality expectations, or regulatory complexity. The key takeaway: factories are focused systems. If their experience, processes, and priorities don't align with your product's real requirements, no amount of optimism or “we'll figure it out” will save the project.   Episode Sections: 00:00 Intro + why factory experience still matters in 2026 01:04 Basic due diligence vs real factory suitability 02:01 The core mistake: buyers don't understand what their project actually requires 03:19 Real case: asking a mechanical supplier to assemble an electronic product 05:22 What electronic products really require beyond “assembly” 07:12 Electronics discipline: IPC standards, ESD handling & skilled labor 09:27 Quality control blind spots when factories lack electronics experience 10:00 Salvage projects: when customers come after choosing the wrong supplier 10:20 Skipping DFM and going straight to tooling, a costly red flag 11:36 Why Apple's model works (and why most companies can't replicate it) 12:30 Factory focus: cost-driven vs quality-driven manufacturers 14:40 Regulated products (medical, automotive, aerospace): experience is mandatory 15:36 Why suppliers rarely admit they're the wrong fit 17:17 “Fake it till you make it” in manufacturing 20:49 Lessons from Poorly Made in China: staged factories & appearances 22:35 The buyer's responsibility: suppliers won't self-disqualify 25:23 Audits + analysis: the cheapest insurance against the wrong factory 26:40 Wrap-up: how to avoid picking the wrong horse in 2026   Related content… How To Choose Which Factory Audit You Need? In this episode of Your Natural Dog with Angela Ardolino, Angela and Carter sit down with Dr. Joel Ehrenzweig, veterinarian, researcher, and founder of Veterinary Health Research Centers — to talk about the groundbreaking Senior Dog Study they've been running together for the past year. Dr. Ehrenzweig shares why he shifted from a strictly pharmaceutical approach to fully embracing natural medicine late in his career. Angela, Carter and Dr. Ehrenzweig discuss how the Senior Dog Study is helping to validate what holistic practitioners have known for years: that functional mushrooms and natural adaptogens can potentially make a real difference in cognitive health, quality of life, and emotional connection for senior dogs.If you have an aging pup and have ever been told “there's nothing we can do,” this episode will give you hope, real data, and real-life stories showing that there are options. Learn more about the Senior Dog Study. Episode RecapLaunching the Senior Dog Study – Carter shares how they recruited a diverse group of senior dogs experiencing cognitive decline—many from families who believed they had no options left—then tracked behavior, activity, and sleep to build a data-backed picture of progress over the course of the study. (00:31)Validating Centuries of Natural Medicine – Angela shares how rescuing senior dogs inspired her to prove that natural approaches—real food, hemp, mushrooms, and adaptogens—can help aging pets thrive without relying on pharmaceutical “longevity drugs.” Dr. Ehrenzweig reflects on his shift from a strictly pharmaceutical mindset, describing how client feedback opened his eyes to alternative options and why he was intrigued to join this groundbreaking study. (02:46)Rethinking Canine Cognitive Decline – Dr. Ehrenzweig explains why a CCD diagnosis shouldn't be seen as “the end” for senior dogs, noting that it develops gradually and shares many similarities with human dementia and Alzheimer's. He describes the challenge of studying such a complex condition and the promise of finding better options beyond pharmaceuticals. Dr. Joel expresses hope that demonstrating improvement in dogs could pave the way for better, more natural options for humans facing cognitive decline in the future. (08:10)The Power of Whole-Plant Medicine & Synergy – Angela shares why her mission is to create pure, whole-plant and mushroom formulas rather than isolated compounds, emphasizing that nature's ingredients work best together. Combining adaptogens like Lion's Mane, Reishi, Cordyceps, Ashwagandha, and Bacopa Monnieri creates a synergistic effect—targeting multiple aspects of cognitive decline and delivering the results seen in the Senior Dog Study. (11:55)Measuring the Impact of Mushrooms & Adaptogens on CCD – Carter explains how the synergistic blend of Lion's Mane, Reishi, Cordyceps, Ashwagandha, and Bacopa Monnieri for dogs was designed to address multiple aspects of cognitive decline, from calming the nervous system to supporting neuroprotection and brain oxygenation. To capture these effects, the team used detailed questionnaires and scoring systems to track behaviors like nighttime waking, disorientation, and social engagement—finding that while every dog's response is different, the combination consistently improved quality of life across a wide range of cases.(14:44)Recognizing the First Signs of CCD – Dr. Joel explains that one of the earliest and most telling signs of canine cognitive decline is a shift in sleep patterns—dogs sleeping more during the day, then pacing or appearing restless at night. With wearable collars, pet parents, and researchers, can now track movement and sleep 24/7, giving an objective view of these changes. (20:01)Real-Life Transformations from Mushrooms & Adaptogens – Angela shares moving stories of senior dogs who were scheduled for euthanasia but experienced dramatic turnarounds after starting on these mushrooms & adaptogens—regaining mobility, focus, and connection with their families in just days. Dr. Joel, a seasoned veterinary researcher with over 15 years of experience, admits he had never seen natural ingredients work this quickly and effectively, reinforcing just how extraordinary these study results have been. (26:22)Beyond Anecdotes, Real Evidence from the Senior Dog Study – Carter and Dr. Joel emphasize that the Senior Dog Study is more than just testimonials. By combining real-time collar data that tracks sleep, wake cycles, and activity with caregiver questionnaires and even blood biomarkers like BDNF and CRP, they've created an objective, data-backed picture of how dogs are responding. Dr. Joel notes that even when improvements vary, simply slowing decline can be a meaningful win for families — and in many cases, the results are dramatic, with dogs showing better engagement, calmer behavior, and restored quality of life.
