Michael and Josh welcome back Dr Andrew Jensen to help explore part two of OftiM's Head and Neck Cancer exploration party. With localised treatments done and dusted, the metastatic space is a daunting heterogeneous disease group. Twenty years ago, head and neck treatment relied on tried and true chemotherapy, but the last fifteen years have shown great strides regarding treatment options and outcomes. The first leap forward was cetuximab added to a chemotherapy backbone, making it the weapon of choice for oncologists worldwide. But like all great civilisations, pembrolizumab now dominates, showing how it can be effective when combined with existing treatment options.A star-studded episode and one not to be missed!Links to studies discussed in this episode (subscription may be required):NCT00122460- https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/nejmoa0802656Keynote 048- https://www.thelancet.com/article/S0140-6736(19)32591-7/fulltextFor more episodes, resources and blog posts, visit www.inquisitiveonc.comFind us on Twitter @InquisitiveOnc!If you want us to look at a specific trial or subject, email us at inquisitiveonc@gmail.comArt courtesy of Taryn SilverMusic courtesy of:- Music Unlimited: https://pixabay.com/users/music_unlimited-27600023/- SoulProdMusic: https://pixabay.com/users/soulprodmusic-30064790/ Hosted on Acast. Andrew Jensen started golfing at seven years old and went professional around 23. His first suicide attempt happened at 16, with others between tours in his mid-twenties. In this episode, Andrew joins us to talk about his journey as an athlete, how intergenerational toxic masculinity shaped his golf game, and the mental health struggles that contributed to his suicide attempts as a young adult. “It was like trying to make it quick and painless as opposed to something that consciously hurt, I think, because if I look back, I really dive into it. It was much more the emotional pain that I wanted to continue to inflict, and have the physical be quick and make all of the pain end as opposed to some people who cut … want the physical pain to kind of take away from the mental pain. Whereas I was hurting myself so much internally that I just wanted to stop hurting period.” (30:30) Andrew also shares how his struggles eventually led him to become a mental health advocate and YouTuber, where he uses his channel to not only help other golf enthusiasts with their game, but to continue to work through the long-lasting mental hurdles in his own. “I think that's where it's like all those years of being a professional golfer and associating that identity now and like on YouTube. And if I have to stop at [that], you know, my knee jerk to that is like, f*ck I failed. ‘Cause I didn't achieve my goal. ‘Cause that was my need. That's how I felt. I feel as a golfer, I still feel like I'm a failed professional golfer, but whatever. And people on the internet love to tell me that too, but I don't f*cking care anymore.” (1:00:09) In This Episode (01:24) What makes golf so tough (05:01) How Andrew started golfing (12:47) Intergenerational toxic masculinity (21:16) Andrew's first struggles with mental health (29:01) Andrew's suicide attempts (32:42) Recovering from the first attempt while still dealing with depression (40:38) The intense pressure of pro sports and its effect on Andrew's mental health (53:02) How Andrew focuses on his mental health currently (57:52) Andrew's relationship with his wife, Kelly (1:03:01) Will he let his son play golf? Our Guest Andrew Jensen competed around the world as a professional golfer for over a decade. After breaking his arm forced him to leave pro golf, Andrew started a YouTube channel to document his journey as an athlete, share behind the scenes looks at tours, equipment and training, share about fatherhood and talk openly about sports and mental health. In this episode we talk about mental health among athletes and kids. And we get into neurology with golf - what are the yips? And how do you treat the yips? What can parents do with expectations and youth sportshttps://www.birdiedads.com/tips-for-youth-sports-with-travis-dorsch/ ( )to increase your child's athletic performance. First, we discuss Simone Biles exit from multiple Olympic events due to a mental issue. As parents, we look to protect our kids. But when athletes and role models struggle with the daily pressure and anxiety, do we give them the support they need? We break down the facts of mental health among youth including that 1 in 5 kids today (pre-COVID) will experience a mental disorder by the age of 24. We have talked about the role of mental health in golf in previous interviews with Andrew Jensen and Dr. Bhrett McCabe. Second, we give parents several tips and strategies for discussing mental health with kids. Including the role of listening with your kids and my recommended book: How to Talk So Kids Will Listen, and How to Listen So Kids Will Talk. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005GG0MXI/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1 (How to Talk So Kids Will Listen, and How to Listen So Kids Will Talk.) Finally, we get to golf and what are the yips? How do you fix them? There have been plenty of professional athletes who have battled the yips - almost every athlete has fully recovered from the yips. With the proper treatment. I knew that Dirk Nowitzki wanted his left hand more than anything else. I knew that Ray Allen didn't like the physicality of the game." - Bruce Bowen explained. In our interview he compares that to golf: I'm 150 out. What's my 150 club? That's what I'm thinking. But that's not what the pros are thinking. They are not going for the flag. They are taking in everything else, what are the contours of the green. They are going for a spot for a 6-7 foot putt. To hear how they think on the game is fascinating. When Bruce was playing NBA basketball against the best - he would compare that approach to guarding the best scorers. It is a challenge each time I play golf to have that mental aspect of the game. Bruce Bowen: NBA, Dad, Coach, GolferBruce Bowen has guarded Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, Ray Allen, Dirk Nowitski...and today he takes all of that experience to his boys on and off the court. We sat down to interview Bruce Bowen. Why would we have Bruce on a golf podcast? Hear from Bruce's experience why golf brings out the weaknesses and requires preparing mentally - just like his days in the NBA. Bruce Bowen was not always a golfer - he talks about growing up in the Valley in California, going to Edison High School and later finding his basketball career. He discusses how he isn't your typical golfer who loved the game at a young age. He didn't get his first set of clubs at 9 years old. Today Bruce Bowen takes all that experience - and applies it to our society for his boys and his players. Bruce takes all of his life and NBA experience and finds new challenges on the golf course. He explains when he fell in love with golf and what keeps bringing him back. We also asked Bruce about some NBA guys including: Who are the top 3 hardest guys in the NBA you had to guard? Who is your favorite NBA player to golf with now? And how does playing in the NBA compare to playing in a golf tournament today? That growing community helps bring in more guest interviews and give you even better stories and golf tips. Here are some highlights from this interview. Golf Should Be FunThe number one reason kids don't play golf: it isn't fun. When I get on the course I cannot count how many times I round number 18 frustrated. I believed I should have shot a better score. I knew I could have hit longer drives and hit more fairways. That's fine. How can we take that same game and make it more enjoyable when teaching our kids? One way is to eliminate what is defeating about golf. At least for your kids. This episode highlights similar ways to make golf fun for kids, we had similar talks in our interview with https://golferswhodadpodcast.captivate.fm/episode/e17-george-bryan-iv-bryan-bros-golf-how-we-built-150k-followers-doing-what-we-love (George Bryan IV (Episode 17). ) We also recommend this episode with https://birdiedads.com/how-parents-influence-their-child-with-andrew-jensen-ep-28/ (Andrew Jensen, How Parents Influence Their Child). Andrew Jensen is a professional golfer and mental health Bell Let’s Talk Ambassador. In his teens, Andrew began to suffer with depression, culminating in a suicide attempt at 16 years old. In those difficult teenage years, golf was his refuge and the one place he felt meaning and purpose. It wasn’t until having to deal with the immense stress and pressure of professional golf that the game became his undoing. After struggling through an extremely difficult rookie campaign in 2008, being dropped by his sponsors in 2009, and finally an injury in 2010, Andrew’s poor play and off course struggles re-opened the door for his depression and suicidal thoughts to enter his life. His 2011 season was his worst to date, forcing him to retire and give up on the game he loved for so many years. In the fall of 2011, two failed suicide attempts in a 3-week span had Andrew hospitalized. Most importantly, he was finally ready to get help and walk a road of recovery towards better health. Returning to professional golf in 2013, Andrew gained status PGA Tour Canada. Though his starts were sparse, the Tour took it upon themselves to share Andrew’s story of strength and courage on the PGA Tour Canada TV show and YouTube channel. The response Andrew received helped him fully realize his place as an advocate for mental health across Canada. Andrew now finds himself at the forefront of the dialogue on mental health overall and as a Bell Let’s Talk Ambassador, and the effort to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health as a public speaker traveling the country and sharing his story with charities, schools, associations, and corporate Canada. *** For Show Notes, Key Points, Contact Info, Resources Mentioned, & More on this episode please visit our website: RockBottom2RockinIt.com. *** Feedback? In the Mail Bag we talk about how to keep your game sharp through the winter, the best players we have ever teed it up with, and what professional golfers we would like to caddy for. On this episode, we dive into the ubiquity of Nauvoo polygamy. Much has been made about Joseph Smith having multiple wives, but he wasn’t the only Nauvoo elite with more than one. Just how prevalent was the practice? How many participated? How many knew about the doctrine? How many plural marriages were formed prior to D&C 132 being committed to paper? What conclusions can we draw from the available data? Gary James Bergera’s article is a masterpiece in helping to understand the complexity of the tangled web of Nauvoo Polygamy. The Temple Lot Case is one of the most important sources for polygamy documents. The RLDS Church wanted ownership of the temple lot in Independence, Missouri but another group, sometimes known as the Temple Lot Church owned the property. The LDS Church assisted assisted the Temple Lot Church and had women testify about their polygamist relationships with Joseph Smith in order to counteract the RLDS claims that they were the true successors to Joseph Smith. Dr. Brian Hales describes this important court testimony. This is a continuation of our previous conversation about young bride Helen Mar Kimball, as Brian discusses her relation to the Temple Lot case. If we didn't have the RLDS Church saying Joseph wasn't a polygamist, we wouldn't have the 1869 affidavits, we wouldn't have the 1877 collection by Andrew Jensen, and we wouldn't have the additional information from the Temple Lot Case. Together those three are 75% of what we know, and it's scary for researchers on polygamy to think about what we would know about Nauvoo polygamy if the RLDS Church had not taken the stance that they did. It's really scary. You'd have John C. Bennett. You'd have William Law, and you would not know even a fraction of what we think we know about it today. Check out our conversation… Don't forget to check out our previous episodes on Fanny Alger, as well as parts 1–7 of our conversations with Brian. https://youtu.be/IDP7Ybvk1cw Our New Contest!
