If there was a surprise critical and commercial failure for the year, it was Forman's highly anticipated, Oscar-baiting Andy Kauffman biopic, Man on the Moon. Among other things, Man on the Moon was touted as a second chance for Carrey to nab a best actor Oscar, following what had roundly been seen as an epic snub for his denial of the award for The Truman Show. It had a lot going for it - an exploration of the tragic and mysterious life of an obscure but beloved cultural figure, directed by the Oscar-winning director of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Amadeus. Forman had just come off the critical and commercial success of The People Vs. Larry Flynt, written as well by Alexander and Karaszewski, who, with that film and 1994's Ed Wood had developed a reputation as having cracked the elusive biopic formula, which they described as the “anti-biopic". Unfortunately, while it did earn his his second consecutive Golden Globe, Man on the Moon was shut out from the Oscars, and the film seemed to find some way to disappoint basically everyone, even those who loved it. This week, we invited cultural critic and giant Man on the Moon fan Sean Malin to talk about Carrey, Kaufman, and that most uneven of genres, the biopic. Sean is on Twitter @cinemalins

Andrew Geoffrey Kaufman was an American entertainer and performance artist. While often called a "comedian", Kaufman preferred to describe himself instead as a "song and dance man". Jerry “The King” Lawler is true wrestling royalty. 168 career championships, an induction into the WWE Hall of Fame, as well as being the man behind the greatest work in wrestling history with his “feud” between he and comedian Andy Kauffman. But on Sept 10th 2012, he had just finished a match and had returned to the broadcast table on the WWE Raw live broadcast when he had a near-fatal cardiac arrest. His heart stopped for 22 minutes, paramedics hit him with the paddles 7 times…and he miraculously lived. And this morning we talked to him about the 10th anniversary of that terrifying night.
After a months-long hiatus, Hawk and Tuffles return to the studio to discuss The Suicide Squad. Thrilled to be joined again by pop culture historian and author Richard F. Brown to do the definitive 'Taxi' total rewatch and episode. We get into the mysterious beauty and melancholy of Bob James' 'Taxi' theme song 'Angela', and the temporary filmed open that became so identified with the ennui and thwarted ambitions of the beloved cabbies of the Sunshine Cab Co. We discuss all the characters and the actors who played them: Latka and Andy Kaufman, Danny DeVito and Louie, Marilu Henner and Elaine, Judd Hirsch and Alex, Christopher Lloyd and Reverend Jim Ignatowski, Tony Danza and Tony Banta, Jeff Conaway (RIP) and Bobby, Carol Kane as Simka, and more. 'Taxi' is one of the most interesting sitcoms in television history because of the originality of its approach to filming with four cameras instead of the sitcom-traditional 3 cameras. This allowed director Jim Burrows to capture what he calls the essential surprise of comedy being performed live in front of a studio audience. Any discussion of 'Taxi' offers the best opportunity we have to discuss Andy Kauffman and his unique and often challenging approach to comedy and performance art in everyday life. We cover his outstanding and long-shelved 1977 TV special, which features one of the most amazing and little-discussed Andy Kauffman bits: a heartfelt and very real and emotional conversation he has with Howdy Doody, his childhood TV hero. And we cover Andy's famous prank on the Taxi cast and brass through the casting of his alter ego Tony Clifton, and Tony Clifton's firing and subsequent massive scene on the soundstage involving security guards and several extremely pissed off producers and actors. This is an episode that will hopefully share with you some things you might not have known about 'Taxi' and afford us all the opportunity anew to appreciate the fact that this series uniquely brought us out of this world talents like Andy Kauffman, Christopher Llloyd, Danny DeVito, and Carol Kane in ONE SHOW. Any series would and could be built on having one of those dynamic talents in the cast; Taxi had all four. Unreal!

This was a crazy episode. We recorded a whole intro that was terrible (worse than ever before) but luckily we changed it with the one you will listen to. I actually mixed up Andy Warhol and Andy Kauffman and we spent like 5 minutes trying to figure out how that was wrong and it literally went on and on and on...but then we scrapped the whole thing. It was a real life deus ex machina... This episode actually has 2 guests!!! Our first guest was DeWayne who runs Wake Comics and makes characters like Liar and Blood Sable that will make you say "cooool". DeWayne tells us how he got into comics, his writing process, his drawing process and a little bit about what the book Liar means to him. Find DeWayne and check out his work: https://www.instagram.com/rydescho/ https://facebook.com/wakecomics/ The second guest joins us is Brian Judge. This was for a segment we don't know what to call other than "worst character/best character." Brian, Eric, DeWayne and Keegan all talk about Superman. That's all you need to know. Brian Judge just released Xomik-buk! Check it out and buy! https://www.oneandonlycomics.com/product/xomik-buk Check out his instagram too: https://www.instagram.com/one_and_only_comics/ Thanks for listening! This iconic Hollywood talent manager that represented Jerry Seinfeld, Andy Kauffman & Carl Reiner began in the mailroom at the William Morris Agency in New York. He soon became an agent and accompanied Elvis to an early appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. He served as a packaging agent for a series of hit shows: The Steve Allen Show, That Girl, Gomer Pyle and specials for Dick Van Dyke, Mary Tyler Moore and Carol Channing. He broke away from the agency life to form the personal management company Shapiro / West Productions with his partner Howard West and they executive produced NBC's Seinfeld, Andy Kaufman at Carnegie Hall and the film Man on the Moon starring Jim Carrey. The David Lynch Foundation presented Shapiro with the Lifetime Bliss Award in 2012 at a starred-studded comedy fundraiser in Beverly Hills. George and Aimee Hyatt produced the documentaries The Bronx Boys, If You're Not In the Obits, Eat Breakfast and The Bronx Boys Still Playing at 80. On this episode George shares stories of Andy Kaufman's first appearance on SNL, he reveals the life highlights of being hugged by Paul McCartney and holding hands with Liz Taylor. He also tells young managers and agents that they need to fall in love with a comedian to represent them well. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Interview: I am joined by comedian, actor, and Emmy winner Rick Overton. Rick has been entertaining us for decades. Rick currently is showing off his Improv mastery in his Set List comedy special. An hour of improvised comedy that will amaze you and keep you rolling with laughter. Rick and I talk about Jonathan Winters and Rick's decades-long friendship with Robin Williams. Rick shares some great personal stories and on-stage stories with Robin. Rick shares his life journey to becoming a comedian and improv master that started with his very musical family. Rick made George Burns laugh at an early age and that cemented his road to being an entertainer. We discuss the importance that 'Evening at the Improv' played during the comedy boom and Rick's one and only time on the Tonight Show when Joan Rivers was the guest host. There's more to the Joan River's story, but you'll have to listen. Rick also shares an amazing story about working with Andy Kauffman as Andy was in the early development of the Tony Cliffton character. Rick shares some great behind-the-scenes stories of working on the Dennis Miller show (for which he won an Emmy). Rick also shares some stories about his iconic TV and movie appearances in "Willow," "Mrs. Doubtfire," "The Office" (Pam's father), and "Seinfeld" (The Drake). Goes together like peanut butter and jelly right? Anyway. First off. The audio is set one level lower in our voices. You'll listen and think WTF is going on. Truth is I have no clue. I've been trying to figure it out. I try to pitch us up to how we normally sound and it sounds terrible. I guess everything is set to a "lower" quality during a global pandemic. Enjoy a much lower bass tone of your favorite hosts discussing their time at home and whether or not Elvis and Andy Kauffman faked their deaths. Então recomendo O Mundo de Andy e, caso você goste tanto do filme quanto eu gostei, talvez valha a pena ver o documentário. https://youtu.be/zVy-I5aQ_G0
