My guest on the show today is Geoff Shullenberger, managing editor of Compact magazine and host of their Blame Theory podcast. Geoff emailed me a few months back, after a post of mine that touched on the the risks of hitching one's identity too thoroughly to hating on the left. What do I think, he asked, about the “post-left.”To which my answer was, “What's that?”That's the topic of much of this episode of the podcast. One answer comes from a piece on the phenomenon that Park MacDougald wrote a few years ago for Unherd. In it, he wrote:The core assertion of the post-Left is relatively simple: The real ruling class in America is the progressive oligarchy represented politically by the Democratic Party. The Democrats are the party of Silicon Valley, Wall Street, the Ivy League, the media, the upper layers of the national security state and federal bureaucracy, and of highly educated professionals in general. The Republicans, however loathsome, are largely a distraction — a tenuous alliance between a minority faction of the ruling class and petit bourgeois.… Although professing commitment to traditionally Left-wing goals such as anti-capitalism, the post-leftists are defined mostly by their aggressive hostility to both the Democratic Party and the radical Left — including the Democratic Socialists of America and the academic-literary Left of magazines such as Jacobin, n+1 and Dissent.Aside from Cryptofash, other leading lights include What's Left? co-hosts Aimee Terese and Oliver Bateman, editor of The Bellows Edwin Aponte, the Irish writer Angela Nagle and a coterie of pseudonymous Twitter accounts, such as @ghostofchristo1. Red Scare co-hosts Anna Khachiyan and Dasha Nekrasova might be considered fellow travellers. To put it another way, this was not the class-first, anti-woke internal critique that I think is more familiar to many us. It shares some DNA with that critique. Like that crew, the post-lefties thought identitarian politics were a fraud, a way for already elite actors to make themselves out to be tribunes of the people, to claim oppressed status in order to advance themselves. But unlike that class firsters, the post-lefties also thought the class first critique was a fraud too. It's all fraud all the way down, wholly disconnected from the vulnerable people it claims to represent, all a project of the elite for the elite. Geoff and I talk about the origins of this group, his own adjacency to it for a little while, the distinctions between the post-left and other post-something groups, including his own crew at Compact, the dangers of finding your identity in pure critique, and just in general the challenges of staying thoughtful in a politically chaotic time. It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with Sharon Lerner, writer covering health and the environment for ProPublica, to discuss her recent piece entitled “EPA Scientists Said They Were Pressured to Downplay Harms From Chemicals. A Watchdog Found They Were Retaliated Against.” Then, they speak with Ari Berman, national voting rights correspondent at Mother Jones, author of Minority Rule: The Right-Wing Attack on the Will of the People—and the Fight to Resist It, to discuss the recent attempts by Republican legislatures and voting commissions to change rules ahead of the 2024 election. First, Sam runs through updates on Israel's offensive on Lebanon, ProPublica's report on Blinken's coverup of Israeli war crimes in front of Congress, Harris' polling, Senate races, the execution of Marcellus Williams, a Haitian non-profit's case against Trump and Vance, Florida's education bans, corruption in Eric Adams' administration, the InfoWars auction, and the FBI report on dropping violent crime everywhere except anti-LGBTQ hate, before parsing a little deeper through Secretary of State Antony Blinken's active coverup in front of Congress, and John Kirby's poor attempt to address it. Sharon Lerner then joins, first stepping back to reassess her year-long coverage, beginning in 2022, of the system of management intimidation and pressure set up by the Trump Administration EPA's “New Chemicals” department, pushing scientists tasked with assessing the impact of new chemicals on human health and the environment to overlook issues, avoid deeper investigation, and even remove notes on them from any official reports, all serving to expedite corporations' ability to get these chemicals to market regardless of safety concerns. Lerner and Sam then look to the structure of the EPA as a whole, tracing how this active pressure trickled down from executives to lawmakers to management before looking to the recently released report from the Inspector General, outlining in broad strokes the system of intimidation and retaliation, as they unpack the slow-walking of any major change to the administration under Biden's presidency, and how that can change. Ari Berman then sets his targets on Georgia as he walks Sam through the state GOP's overwhelming effort to pre-emptively rig every step of the electoral system in the lead-up to the 2024 elections, with a particular focus on replacing the election boards with election-denying cronies to changes in mail-in ballot eligibility. After briefly touching on the role of RFK's ongoing ballot shenanigans in further threatening mail-in-enfranchisement – particularly in Wisconsin and North Carolina – Berman and Sam tackle an ongoing legal case out of Mississippi that has the potential to risk mail-in ballots nationwide if it makes it to to the Supreme Court before November, wrapping up the interview with a conversation on the need for Dems to emphasize communicating voting rights, encouraging voting, and challenging this effort head-on. And in the Fun Half: Sam first unpacks yesterday's state-backed killing of Marcellus Williams, walking through the myriad issues ignored by the Missouri government and Supreme Court in his case, the overwhelming push to stay the case, and his son's reflections on the day of his death. Bernie Moreno takes on abortion and accidentally alienates 50% of his base, Dan Osborn absolutely kills the PR push ahead of his election, and JD Vance walks into a supermarket… ouch. Vivek, Taibbi, and Anna Khachiyan wax poetic about Great Replacement theory, Alvaro from Waco unpacks the Dem's push in Texas and the ongoing death row case of Robert Robertson, Stephen in Dublin and West in North Carolina (respectfully) unpack some absurdities in recent left coverage, Bob from Indiana has a movie recommendation (Matewan!) and a question for the Harris campaign, plus, your calls and IMs!Follow Sharon on Twitter here: https://x.com/fastlernerCheck out Sharon's work at ProPublica here: https://www.propublica.org/people/sharon-lerner Follow Ari on Twitter here: https://x.com/AriBerman Check out Ari's work at Mother Jones here: https://www.motherjones.com/author/ari-berman/ Check out “Minority Rule” here: https://us.macmillan.com/books/9780374600211/minorityrule Become a member at JoinTheMajorityReport.com: https://fans.fm/majority/join Follow us on TikTok here!: https://www.tiktok.com/@majorityreportfm Check us out on Twitch here!: https://www.twitch.tv/themajorityreport Find our Rumble stream here!: https://rumble.com/user/majorityrep ort Check out our alt YouTube channel here!: https://www.youtube.com/majorityreportlive Join Sam on the Nation Magazine Cruise! 7 days in December 2024!!: https://nationcruise.com/mr/ Check out StrikeAid here!; https://strikeaid.com/ Gift a Majority Report subscription here: https://fans.fm/majority/gift Subscribe to the ESVN YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/esvnshow Subscribe to the AMQuickie newsletter here: https://am-quickie.ghost.io/ Join the Majority Report Discord! http://majoritydiscord.com/ Get all your MR merch at our store: https://shop.majorityreportradio.com/ Get the free Majority Report App!: http://majority.fm/app Check out today's sponsors: Shopify: Upgrade your business and get the same checkout brands like Alo, Allbirds, and Skims use. When The Free Press decided to rent a theater with 1,600 seats for our first-ever live debate a few months ago, most people looked at us with a mixture of pity and concern. We would have to fill all 1,600 seats. The theater we'd booked in L.A.—not exactly a city known for its culture of public debates—was smack in the middle of downtown, where after-hours can look a little bit like San Francisco during the day. To make matters worse, we had only managed to get the place on a Wednesday night. We did it anyway. And we sold out every seat in the house. People came from all over: Vancouver, Seattle, New York, Nevada, Montana. Someone drove a retrofitted school bus from SF to hold an after-party for whoever wanted to come. There were three young priests who drove many miles to see the action, and at least one porn star who took a flight. Also in attendance: libertarian frat bros in suits; e-girls with Elf Bars; trad boys who wondered aloud if the concession popcorn had seed oil; dads who had to run out to check in with the babysitter; actors from your favorite TV shows; comedians you've never heard of; writers you love to hate; angry Catholics; resigned atheists; closeted Trump voters; Mormons saving themselves for marriage; young gay couples in crop tops; feminists; anti-feminists; and a whole lot of podcasters. The point is: that night, we got a sense of how diverse this community is, and holy shit, was it exciting. We learned that The FP isn't just a newsletter and that Honestly isn't just a podcast. We have built a community of curious people. And most importantly, we learned that debate isn't dead. So for today's episode, we wanted to share the full debate from that evening for those of you who couldn't be in the theater. The proposition was this: has the sexual revolution failed?  With the hindsight that comes with half a century, four brilliant women—Sarah Haider, Grimes, Anna Khachiyan, and Louise Perry—debated whether the movement that promised women sexual equality and liberation has fulfilled its promises, or whether it has failed women. . . and maybe men too? Listen and decide for yourself. Special and huge thanks to FIRE, the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, without whom this event would never have been possible. Bari Weiss recently held a "debate" about the failure of the sexual revolution. And the results were...rather boring, says journalist Michelle Lhooq. It seems like everywhere you look, men are struggling to find a sense of meaning and purpose. In fact, men are just getting kind of weird. On the other side of the equation, many women say they can't find a “good man” who meets their expectations. Enter Christine Emba, Washington Post columnist and author of the 2022 book Rethinking Sex: A Provocation. In a recent WaPo essay, she discusses the crisis of masculinity and where men are looking for models of masculinity, from Jordan Peterson to Andrew Tate and beyond. In this episode, we chat about her article, her book, the past and present mating economy, and the evolution of her own thinking since her college days and the emergence of “the Princeton mom.” (Leave it to her to ask the questions Matt Walsh doesn't.) In the bonus, we talk about dating apps — everyone's favorite gripe — in addition to the resurgence of matchmaking and how people got dates and met people in the pre-app world. ————————— WHO IS CHRISTINE EMBA? Christine Emba is a writer for The Washington Post's Opinions section. She is also the author of Rethinking Sex: A Provocation, which challenges the narrative of sex positivity. Prior to joining the staff of The Washington Post, Emba was the Hilton Kramer Fellow in Criticism at the New Criterion and a deputy editor at the Economist Intelligence Unit. She grew up in Virginia and earned an A.B. in Public and International Affairs from Princeton University. Follow her substack here: https://bit.ly/3Z8nJ49 Read her article, “Men are lost. On reactionary feminism.    [Patreon Exclusive]   We continue our discussions on contemporary feminism by looking at the diametric opposite of the atomistic vision presented by Sophie Lewis: the conservative, communitarian approach advanced by Mary Harrington.     Harrington is critical of 'Progress Theology'. What does that mean, beyond rejecting new orthodoxies on gender – does that mean rejecting progress wholesale? If liberalism has reached a dead end, what intellectual supports should we draw upon?    And if we join Harrington in rejecting the 'caring' state – the 'antiseptic cyborg devouring mother' – does that mean also defending 'care' against 'freedom', as she does?    Readings: Feminism against Progress, Mary Harrington, Regenery  Reactionary Feminist, Mary Harrington, Substack /49/ Kids & Confessions ft. Choose Your Future, 2021, is part of KW Digital: Open Secret, 16 July - 31 December. joshuacitarella.com/chooseyourfuture/
www.kw-berlin.de/en/open-secret/ In 2021, I commissioned a group of artists and memers to write short wiki-style descriptions of fantastical future scenarios. Writers were instructed to copy/paste existing wikipedia entries and “play mad libs” with the nouns and dates. Drawing on movements from the past, these short stories recombine political history to anticipate long tail ideologies and factions that may soon emerge. Choose Your Future takes the hyperbolic imaginings of young people, raised on the internet, and puts their words directly into the mouths of content creators. In this way, the project emulates the signal amplification that occurs through social media, as radical takes move from the anonymous fringe into the verified mainstream. Is this the multi-faceted analysis of the Rand Corporation? Or is it a teenage meme poster who thinks it would be cool if these political keywords combined? I'm interested in the point where those spheres overlap. This project combines the creative efforts of some of the artists, memers and content creators that have most inspired me over the past few years. Texts by: Margo Bergamini, Nick Bird, @ manletpill, David Noel, Abbey Pusz, D.Z. Rowan and Joshua Citarella. Read by: Caroline Busta, Mat Dryhurst, A.M. Gittlitz, Daniel Keller, Anna Khachiyan, Holly Herndon, Lil' Internet, Jack Wagner and Joshua Citarella. --- Open Secret is a six-month long online program exploring the role of the hidden in our apparently “open” society. Information technologies are supposed to increase our access to knowledge, making the world more legible, while undermining ignorance and superstition. But sometimes the feeling prevails that we have entered a new dark age of black boxes, projections, and paranoia. Techno-culture is obsessed with the unseen, the inaccessible, the known-unknown. Open Secret pursues things that are obscured–through artistic commissions, a suite of essays by leading thinkers, and an intensive public program dedicated to critical reappraisal of the digital infrastructures that organize civic life. With new contributions released on a monthly basis, the Open Secret website will bring together art, technology, politics, and new patterns of exchange. Curators: Nadim Samman, curator digital sphere, in collaboration with Katja Zeidler, head of education & mediation

Anna Khachiyan and Paris Hynes discuss sobriety. This was January 2019 and it's taken me like 4 months to post it. I sound mad stupid in this one but Anna is brilliant and Paris is endearing. This was the first time I recorded a pod outside of the Montez studio. Thank you for teaching me, Anna.

Somewhere on the road between Stalingrad and Forever21, something essential got misplaced amidst the bathos. Eric works through a bottle of Red wine on air with social, literary and artistic theorist Anna Khachiyan (co-host of the explosive and popular Red Scare podcast) to find out what is brewing on the anti-woke Left among the intellectual daughters of Camille Paglia. Anna takes us through her project of the reconstructed feminine combining irreverent intellectual dominance with a return to valuing motherhood informed by her claims on Soviet & American heritage. The intellectual foundation of the intersectional “oppression Olympics” and reparations discussion is further dissected amidst the twin specters of the Armenian & Jewish genocides which mysteriously appear not to register at all with today's progressives.  No puppies were eaten during this podcast, but an ambient trigger warning is otherwise in order for those with exquisite sensitivities. Caveat emptor and welcome to the Grand Finale of the inaugural year of “The Portal.”  See you all again in 2020!
