There is really no good way to explain it unless you hear it from the horses mouth. Hayden Barnes served 4 years in the Utah National Guard and 7 years as an Army Infantryman. After participating in the Microsoft Software and Systems Academy (MSSA) in 2021, he landed a great job with an impressive salary at a tech firm in software development management. Hayden was told by senior military leaders that he'd never make it as a civilian and should stay in the military. He is very passionate about being a voice of what is possible for junior enlisted servicemembers, especially in the face of the many programs out there that are specifically targeted to senior enlisted, retirees or officers. Throughout both his military career and private sector career in tech, he had to make several unplanned pivots and career changes due to many different factors. Part of why he struggled was due, in part, to “imposter syndrome.” Hayden experienced these doubts about whether he was up to par with his peers, many of whom he thought had a better background, more training or intelligence in his comparison with them. He learned that he had to stop looking at others and comparing himself and simply focus on his own journey and situation. Fear is often a tool that is used my more senior military leaders and veterans. Instead of arguing or getting upset at those “scare tactics,” focus on achieving success for yourself. Instead of proving them wrong, simply focus on proving yourself right. Consider the fact that those who are often using this fear-based tactic on you are often coming from a place of their own fear, a lack of knowledge or perhaps they are trying to gain or sell something. Before reacting to these fear tactics, stop to consider their motivation.Hayden discusses some of the transferable skills that he gained in the Army as an infantryman that helped him achieve success in the tech career field. He leveraged his transferable skills, that were not really tech related, as well as what he learned in the Microsoft Software and Systems Academy (MSSA) program. We discuss some of Hayden's biggest challenges in adapting to the private sector such as dealing with a more casual and less structured environment. It has been more of an adaptation than a struggle. Be open to the process of adapting to new cultures and new environments, much like you've done throughout your career. After starting as a small project manager, Hayden has progressed through the company into higher level, more strategic roles. He sees his military skills as his foundation, his education and training are the reinforcements of that foundation and he built his career from that. You have to believe in those skills as your foundation and it will help you achieve success after the military. Hayden goes over what skills he highlighted on his resume. It was not focused on his infantry experience, instead he highlighted his achievements translated into his target industry key words and pain points. Do your research and change the story from military language to corporate terms that your new employers can understand. Please head to the Lessons Learned for Vets brand new YouTube channel at https://tinyurl.com/llforvets22 to hear Hayden answer a BONUS QUESTION about his key to success after his military service. Why is Private Adam Eisenberg finally coming forth on the 9/11 20th Anniversary? What did he see and experience inside the Pentagon as he was recovering bodies along with Army Alpha Company 3rd US Infantry?Whose bodies was he recovering - Pentagon employees, or plane passengers? What plane parts did Adam (an expert in plane engine parts by coincidence) find inside the Pentagon? While serving in the Army as a member of Alpha Company, 3rd US Infantry, Adam Eisenberg spent approximately 240 hours on site with at least a hundred of his fellow servicemen, at the Pentagon from September 11th - 30th, 2001.In addition to being a first responder with extensive time on site, he also tells a 9/11 story spanning over 20 years that you won't find in the mainstream media. From professional working experience with aeronautical engine parts to investigative journalism work that is continually digging to find answers, Adam is devoted to telling his story in hopes that a new federal investigation into the events of September 11th can finally occur. In addition to pursuing 9/11 truth, his greatest passions are marathon running, raising awareness of veterans issues and helping others find their "why." Partly inspired by his grandfather's stories of combat and survival from WWII, David Bellavia decided to enlist as an Army Infantryman. It was pre-9/11, and the world was relatively quiet. Fast forward to the early days of OIF, and Bellavia is now in the thick of it, experiencing combat like his grandfather had. One of those battles - taking place in Fallujah on November 10, 2004 - would ultimately lead to Bellavia receiving the Medal of Honor, for his actions wiping out an enemy squad element. It's an incredible story, and one Bellavia tells with humility and reverence. Listen as Tony Nash talks with athlete and personal trainer Michael Eckert, the 2015 Guinness World Record holder for most pull-ups (50) in a minute. Although extremely physically fit, Michael reveals his fitness “kryptonite” and failures and shares how he overcomes them. He talks about the importance of doing what you enjoy and surrounding yourself with things and people you like. Pull-ups mastery Michael Eckert, the 2015 Guinness World Record holder for the most pullups (50) in a minute, says his love and passion for pull ups began at home, after his father, an Army officer, brought home a military style pull up bar. He and his brother, who would later become an Army Infantryman, would engage in friendly competitions in their backyard. This worthy rivalry strengthened Michael because it was all fun, making him want to do more pull ups without any pressure. At the time, he was not aware that doing at least 40 pull ups was a huge deal. It was not until a rock climbing buddy dared him to do it and he was able to do 45. He is currently training to set the most pullups in 24 hours in September. Now that he's no longer an active duty Marine, Michael says he continues to value physical fitness and athleticism. “Whether morning, night, once a day, I always do something that involves moving my body around.” “I think everyone should be physically fit because you function better as humans when we're functionally in shape.” He has his own fitness app Live Above the Bar, containing video workouts, nutrition guides, and health tips for his community. He is also a member of FitOps Foundation, an organization that seeks to reduce veteran suicide through fitness. On being a generalist As a kid, Michael says he did not have any specific ambition. He was a little bit into everything that he enjoyed and he just loved the thrill of competition. “Since I spread myself around, I'm a pretty well-rounded athlete across the board. That's where I am right now.” He also never had a big role model growing up – in the real world, at least. He looked up to Goku, the protagonist of the Dragon Ball Z anime. Goku, originally sent to destroy Earth as an infant, grew up to become the strongest warrior and Earth defender. His fitness kryptonite Famous for being the pullup guy, Michael reveals his biggest fitness kryptonite: mobility/flexibility. He recalls his time in the American Ninja Warrior, where he says everything was a walk in the park until the finals, when he fell like a rock on the water after failing to accomplish the Jumping Spider. “I was on national television, I looked down those two walls. I was like, I know my legs can't go that far apart.. But I'm on TV so I tried. So it looks like I jumped off the trampoline straight into the water. Like I didn't even try to go on the wall.” Recently, he has been trying to focus on gaining flexibility. Calling himself an “extremely inflexible” person, he does not like doing it but he knows it will increase his performance. He says if he keeps on doing something he hates, he just ends up putting it on the side. He ends up tweaking some stretches to find it more appealing to him. Good thing, too, there's another option: sauna. He recently bought one and he says it is one of his major investments for his health and performance. Darkest time in his life Michael recalls the darkest time in his life. In 2017, in the same week, he injured his wrist a couple of days before coming out of active duty and lost his best friend, SGT Tryee “Banana” Green, to suicide. At the time, he was confronted with two decisions: “I can either join him and not be here anymore and I can push through and see where this goes.” He considers these two as his greatest failures. But he hopes he could turn them into success in September when he again tries to break the world record for the most number of pull ups in 24 hours. Despite his injury, he continues to train hard and...

THE PETE SANTILLI SHOW Episode #1956 - MONDAY - June 01, 2020 - 6PM Live Broadcast Link: https://youtu.be/YxBEUuS2FeY Trump: "Anarchists...we see you". Insurrection Act Possible Tool & Will Crack Down Tonight 1956-6PM White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McAnany said Monday that the president was considering invoking the Insurrection Act to send federal troops to police the streets of America’s major cities in order to stop riots, but that the focus now iss currently on encouraging governors to utilize the National Guard. “It’s one of the tools available, whether the president decides to do that, that is his prerogative,” she said in response to questions about the president using the Insurrection Act. The Insurrection Act of 1807 allows the president to call up federal troops to help restore the peace. It was invoked by President George H.W. Bush to send troops to help quell the 1992 Rodney King riots in Los Angeles. McEnany emphasized that the Constitution gave governors the police power to prevent violence and that the president wanted to see more governors utilize the full potential of their states’ National Guard resources. What's up exquisite people!Hope y'all are hanging in there. Much love always, beaming out from the hot and sunny Sonoran desert to wherever you may be. Thank you for tuning in and supporting the BNP.This episode it's an honor to introduce y'all to Afghan War combat veteran Stephen the Infantryman. Stephen served as an Army Infantryman in Kandahar Province in Afghanistan, during the Obama surge in 2008-2009. He deployed for 13 months. About 7 months into his deployment, Stephen's platoon was hit by a suicide bomber while they were on foot patrol at a bazaar outside Kandahar. Stephen lost friends, and witnessed horrific injuries to his fellow soldiers and Afghan civilians alike, including children. I wanted to bring Stephen on the pod to speak about what he saw and experienced in the Army and in Afghanistan, and to track his journey, physically and psychologically, from being an 18 year old young man eager to see action, to a combat veteran back in the U.S., trying to reintegrate into American civilian society and thrive, while dealing with trauma and unanswered questions from the war. I also wanted to have him on so he could help educate and explain, in his own words, to civilian and veteran civilian listeners alike about how best to support veterans who are returning home from deployments abroad, and especially how best to be consciously receptive when a veteran opens up about trauma experienced on deployment and throughout their time in the military. I'm very thankful to Stephen for taking the time to come on the BNP and share with us his stories and experiences serving in the Army, and being deployed in Afghanistan.A couple housecleaning items:I have a new, more easily memorable website URL now: barbarian.buzzsprout.com.We're still on Instagram @conantanner.Email the pod at barbarian.noetics@gmail.com.I'm in the process of upgrading my audio equipment, and I could really use your financial support at www.patreon.com/noetics. I know it's a lot to ask right now- but even $1/month is incredibly helpful to help me offset the costs of researching, hosting, creating and improving the quality of the pod. You can also cancel at any time. Please spread the word, tell a friend, and don't forget that RRS action (rate, review, subscribe). You all make it possible for me to expand the podcast, reach more people, find more inspiring and compelling guests like Stephen, and build our tribe of philosopher-barbarians. So, thank you all! This week Jeff talks with Cameron Cushman, a filmmaker and avid fly fisherman. He lives in South Florida and travels the country in search of various fish species living in their native environments, from saltwater to high mountain streams. His recent video, Chasing Natives, documented him and a companion fishing for native species of trout in the southwest. Cameron’s video helped bring the native fish message to a younger audience and was the first in a series of native fish videos he is planning to release. Cameron discovered fly fishing while stationed in Alaska as an Army Infantryman, and immediately became obsessed with the sport. Several years later after retiring from the service, Cameron’s passion for fly fishing grew and he began to establish himself in the fly fishing scene. Cameron also shares his passion for fly fishing and native fish with others, introducing them to the sport by sharing his experience, techniques, and on the water knowledge. Cameron suffers from a chronic disease called Gastroparesis which affects his ability to digest food and properly empty his stomach. This has led him to advocate for others suffering with chronic illnesses by using personal experience and motivational speaking. Cameron contributes his passion for fly fishing and native fish as a way to help him deal with the realities of living with a chronic disease. He can be reached at contact@cameroncush.com and followed on Instagram at @cameroncush

Sometimes you find yourself with some fake blood in your mouth and a couple of drinking straws - because that's how you get things done in this business. At least, it is when you're a special effects makeup artist, like this week's Cinematic Immunity guest, David Mendez. Listen as the multi-talented Mendez brakes down the makeup department for us, with a special focus on special-effects. We talk about the tools of his trade (fake blood and drinking straws are only two of them), the challenges and fun of creating makeup looks for film, his influences, and how Captain Kirk taught him to fight. He also explains how being a U.S. Army Infantryman compares to working on a movie set, and how it has helped his stunt coordinator work. Plus, we talk set safety, the process of getting union membership, and the wonders of technology - because walkie-talkies are your friend. Enjoy! Check back on Thursday for a sneak peek of next week's episode, with very special guest, Chris Warren.
