Al-Adiyat or The War Horses which run swiftly[1] (Arabic: العاديات, al-ʿādiyāt, also known as "The Courser, The Chargers") is the 100th chapter (sūrah) of the Qur'an, with 11 āyāt or verses. Regarding the timing and contextual background of the revelation (asbāb al-nuzūl), it is an earlier "Meccan surah", which means it is believed to have been revealed in Mecca, rather than later in Medina Summary 1-6 Oaths that man is ungrateful to his God 7-8 Man loves the things of this world 9-11 Man's secret thoughts shall be discovered in the judgment-day [2] A one liner theme of surah al-adiyat would read that this surah gives an example that horses are more grateful to their owners than men are to their Rabb (Allah).[3] First five ayaat of the surah consist of an oath as a metaphor enforcing the lesson.[4] They describe a scene of horses charging, panting, producing sparks by their hooves, raiding at the time of dawn, stirring up the cloud of dust and arriving a gathering. The substantive proposition is in verses 6-8 that Man is ungrateful to his Lord and himself is a witness to it and he is immoderate in the love of worldly good.[5] The last three ayaat conclude the surah with a rhetorical question that Does the man not know about the time when contents of the graves will be resurrected and that which is in men's breasts shall be brought to light on that Day their Sustainer will show that He has always been fully aware of them Period of revelation Whether this Surah Al-Adiyat is a Makki or a Madani is disputed. But the subject matter of the Surah and its style clearly indicate that it is not only Makki, but was revealed in the early stage of Makkan period.[3] Abdullah bin Masud, Jabir, Hasan Basri, Ikrimah, and Ata say that it is Makki. Anas bin Malik, and Qatadah say that it is Madani; and from Ibn Abbas two views have been reported, first that it is a Makki Surah, and second that it is Madani. But the subject matter of the Surah and its style clearly indicate that it is not only Makki but was revealed in the earliest stage of Makkah. So the surah is considered to be Meccan conclusively.[6] Hadith According to hadith this surah is recommended in Maghrib prayer. Hisham ibn Urwah said that his father used to recite the surahs like the Al-Adiyat is recited. Abu Dawud said: This indicates that those (traditions indicating long surahs) are abrogated, and this is more sound tradition.[7]

Listen to Dr Musharraf Hussain sharing his thoughts and analysis of Surat Al-‘Adiyat. This is a late Makkan surat that concisely describes the human condition of thanklessness. The Arabic is Kufr, a key theme in the Quran, as it often warns people of the dreadful consequences of human ingratitude. A kafir is an unthankful person, the one who fails to acknowledge the gifts of the Generous Lord. The kafir, the disbeliever, is condemned for this ingratitude. Hell is the only place that will cleanse humanity of the filth of this sin. The surat strongly condemns unthankfulness and reminds people of the Day when everything will be revealed and no secrets will remain.

Jo Ellen Hayden is the author of the Horse Heroes website, produced in collaboration with Brooke USA and the World War I Centennial Commission, and she is Elise’s guest on this episode of Because of Horses.   Horse Heroes was created to shine light on the critical role equines played throughout the world during the years of The Great War and to honor their legacy through raising awareness of the needs of the nearly 100 million working equines in the developing world. With 250 images and video clips, Horse Heroes is the largest single collection of photographs of American animals in World War I and is one of the most comprehensive historical accounts of equines in The Great War ever compiled. Jo Ellen (B.A., M.A., History) researched and wrote the site, which includes historical information on the purchase, training, shipping, veterinary care and battlefield conditions for the over one million American horses, mules and donkeys who served Allied forces in Europe. She carefully documented the extensive use of equines, both in harness and under saddle, serving roles ranging from carrying cavalrymen into battle to helping wounded soldiers to safety. Jo Ellen shares that equines often hauled nearly impossible loads in difficult terrain.   Equines suffered greatly during the war, with only 200 returning to the United States. The U.S. Army Veterinary Corps, formed only a year before the war began, struggled to provide care under often desperate conditions. The plight of equines during and after World War I was what inspired Englishwoman Dorothy Brooke to take action to improve their conditions. She founded Brooke in the 1930s. Brooke USA was founded in 2007 as a sister organization to Brooke, now the world’s largest equine welfare charity. Brooke USA funds programs to improve the living and working conditions of equines and the families that rely on them through culturally sensitive and practical approaches geared towards long-lasting solutions. Horse Heroes provides a resource for historians, educators and equine enthusiasts to better understand the tremendous impact of the horse during World War I. He tells us about the highs and lows and what lead him to found War Horses for Veterans.   As Patrick explains on his website: "War Horses for Veterans is the premier horsemanship, networking and personal growth program in the U.S. We are a Kansas City based nonprofit that brings combat veterans from across the country together in a safe and peaceful environment. Our 3-4 day programs are designed to teach the basics of horsemanship and create a network that will provide outlets for other opportunities and friendships. We use a combination of learning to work a horse, creating new networks and Equus/Life coaching to help each veteran with their own personal growth. There is no cost to the veteran. For veterans who are working to transition from active-duty to civilian life, War Horses for Veterans has become one of the premier programs for horsemanship, networking and personal growth.   Founded in 2014, War Horses for Veterans is the brainchild of Patrick Benson, an equestrian and Army combat infantryman who served in Iraq from 1998-2004. Patrick recognized the unique challenges faced by veterans, who struggle with depression or PTSD following their service. He knew how beneficial horses had been to his own healing process. Patrick worked with co-founders Andy and Patricia Brown to create the organization, based at their Stilwell, Kansas, property. War Horses for Veterans offers three-day programs during which groups of five to six veterans learn the basics of horsemanship and work to create a network of support. Led by veterans, participants have a safe and peaceful environment in which they can begin to define what they need to learn, change to meet their goals. The program provides an alternative to conventional therapy or medication.   War Horses for Veterans expanded its offerings in 2018 and launched a program for spouses. Through a VFW Foundation Grant, War Horses for Veterans has been training volunteers for its Mentorship Leadership Development Program. In addition, the Browns have established an endowment to support the work of the organization into the future. War Horses for Veterans is supported entirely by donations and grants. Veterans do not pay to participate and can return as many times as they wish so long as they bring another veteran. The program also covers airline tickets, lodging and meals. Veterans need not have previous horse experience to participate.       Topics of Discussion: [:18] About today’s episode. [1:44] What led to War Horses’ creation and how it has evolved since its conception. [4:24] How working with horses proves to be incredibly healing for combat veterans with  PTSD. [8:12] Patrick tells the story about the horse that changed his life. [16:03] The aspects that make War Horses so significant in the lives of participants. [23:18] Statistics that prove the positive effects of equine therapy for combat veterans. [23:46] What it is like for Patrick to witness the evolution in the War Horses’ participants from the moment they first walk in, to the time they leave the program. He also talks about the beautiful connections he has made with the horses, himself. [27:07] Patrick talks about his experience in working with the horses and the process of building emotional memory through reinforced, continued interaction. [32:18] Patrick explains another fantastic program War Horses for Veterans offers: a program for spouses. [36:36] Patrick talks about the horses and describes some of the participants’ favorites. [42:11] Another fantastic part about War Horses: the participants do not need any previous horse experience. [45:22] What the recognition Patrick has experienced from War Horses means to him. So it got our attention, and since it’s newly been released on Starz on Demand, we felt compelled to offer it the full Oscars Sprint Profile treatment. Not gonna lie, both Mike and I were worried about this choice of episode because Mike 1 has come out as vehemently against Horse Movies. It’s a rare prejudice, which he’s admitted is a bizarre and irrational prejudice, but he has refused to change his mind, and these were the stakes. After all the War Horses and Black Stallions, would The Rider finally change the heart of Mike 1? Or would he double down on his hatred for everything horse related entertainment? The format for the episode gives you two reviews for the price of one listen as we do a loaded non-spoiler segment before breaking down the entire plot after some spoiler warning dance music. This film fits our template especially well as we have quite the backstory to tell in the non-spoiler section, and we build on that with specs, the premise, our expectations, reviews of both the production values and performances, and an Oscar Lens, where we cover all the buzz The Rider is getting this awards season. Then we dance, give you a full segment on what the lead actor Brady Jandreau is doing these days as an actual cowboy himself, and then we break down the entire plot and it’s many strong uplifting themes, integrating all our bests and worsts along the way. If you enjoyed this episode, don’t forget to click on our other OSPs.
