Read transcriptGather around power-level enthusiasts and tournament fighters, because this week on Play Comics we're charging up our ki and diving headfirst into the legendary slugfest that is Dragon Ball Z: Budokai for PS2 and GameCube. That's right, we're looking at the 2002 fighting game that asked the burning question “What if we took the first three arcs of Dragon Ball Z and squeezed them into a button-mashing experience that makes even the most patient Z-Fighter want to go Super Saiyan with frustration?” Developed by Dimps and published by Infogrames (back when they still existed and weren't just a nostalgic memory floating in gaming's hyperbolic time chamber), this cel-shaded beatdown promised to let players experience everything from Raditz's surprise family reunion to Cell's perfectionist power trip. What it delivered was a fighting system so basic that even Yamcha could probably figure it out, paired with enough beam struggles to make your thumbs file for workers' compensation. Joining us for this Saiyan-sized discussion is the one and only Doc Issues from Capes on the Couch, because when you need someone to analyze the psychological implications of repeatedly punching people until they explode into light particles you call a professional. Together we'll explore how this game managed to compress roughly 100 episodes of screaming, power-ups, and “next time on Dragon Ball Z” frustrating end caps into a tournament format that somehow made sense. So grab your orange gi, practice your best Kamehameha stance, and prepare for an episode that's over 9000 times more entertaining than waiting five episodes for Goku to finish charging his spirit bomb. Will this manga-to-game adaptation achieve its final form? Or will it get sent to Other World faster than you can say “Kakarot”? Time to find out if this Z-Fighter deserves a senzu bean or a one-way ticket to Snake Way! Learn such things as: What happens when you try to balance Goku's overwhelming power level against characters who can barely survive a Saibaman encounter? Is there a psychological explanation for why watching grown men scream for five minutes while powering up never gets old? What's the secret to making players care about story mode when everyone already knows Goku's going to win everything anyway? And so much more! Back in April, Apogee and Emberheart Games released the killer boomer shooter, Wizordum, out of early access. Shortly thereafter, a partnership was formed with Atari and Infogrames to bring the title to consoles, which made its debut this week! Joining me this week are Primoz Vovk (Lead at Emberheart Games) and Jeron Moore (Executive Producer at Apogee) to discuss the title from its origin to release and everything in between. This one covers a unique look at a game outside of the traditional orbit, the relationship between a developer and publisher, and the learnings from early access. Enjoy! Back in 2020, We're Five Games' Totally Reliable Delivery Service made a name for itself thanks to its wacky physics-based antics. Streamers gravitated towards its chaos, which only broadened its appeal that endures to this day. Following the acquisition of the title by Infogrames, we recruited SneakyBox to get to work on an update and some new DLC to give more content to those fans who stuck with the game all this time and entice new players to check it out. TCW Podcast Episode 210 - Accolade Part 2   In our second look at Accolade, we cover the company's gradual decline in the 90's leading to its acquisition by Infogrames. The desire to expand into console games grew too strong, and Accolade decided to save money on production costs by clean-room engineering the lockout mechanism on the SEGA Genesis. Meanwhile, SEGA was working on an internal revision that would tie their trademarked logo into the startup handshake. This would give them the leverage they needed to sue anyone who reverse-engineered the system. Accolade managed to get the injunction on their games dissolved, but SEGA still retained the option to sue them. Ultimately, Accolade was forced to settle with SEGA to release their games, which left them with ongoing debt that would continue to haunt them. Accolade continued to struggle to grow their franchises. They had the disastrous release of Bubsy 3D, coinciding with the launch of classics like Mario 64, Tomb Raider, and Crash Bandicoot. In the end, Infogrames acquired Accolade, largely due to its distribution network. However, this acquisition was soon overshadowed by Infogrames' later purchase of GT Interactive. What little was left of Accolade was merged into Infogrames Inc.   Jack Nicklaus Golf (Konami - NES): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOitBakgLKo Star Control (Genesis): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFHzXAuB1tE Hardball! Show Notes On this week's podcast, Dan and Kris climb aboard the SAG Cartoon Express to discuss another classic Sonic the Hedgehog episode, but not THAT Sonic the Hedgehog show. The OTHER Sonic show that was airing at the same time, which was just called Sonic the Hedgehog. Not confusing at all! Anyway, the episode was called No Brainer, and it certainly was an episode of a TV show. But was it better than The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog? How did Sonic survive after eating a chili dog from a vending machine in a sewer? Who put that vending machine there in the first place? We may never know. At the top of the show, Kris explains why he was sick for most of the week, and why he wound up freezing cold, watching The Flash on his phone on the floor of the local mall. Meanwhile, Dan had to drive extreme distances for a combination of hospital visits and specialized chicken finger restaurants. Meanwhile, Cave Story is still excellent, Dadish 3D delivers hot Dadish action in 3 dimensions, Pokemon Scarlet is exactly as janky as everyone said, and more! Finally, in Week Old News, Tomb Raider has been CENSORED by the woke agenda!!! OR HAS IT?!? Sensationalist headlines would have you believe it was a nefarious plot to suck all the joy out of viewing tiny, out of focus JPEGs of a hyper-polygonal Lara Croft, but is there more to the story? Plus, Infogrames is back (and still hard to pronounce), an interview about the Tetris CD-i soundtrack is saved, Nintendo 64 NSO gets a rather bizarre update, and a whole lot more. Enjoy! Génération Do It Yourself

TCW Podcast Episode 203 - Alone In The Dark   Despite appearing outdated by today's standards, Alone in the Dark remains a highly influential game in the survival horror genre. Numerous franchises, including Silent Hill, Resident Evil, and Eternal Darkness, either cite or incorporate tropes popularized by Alone in the Dark. Spearheaded by Frédérick Raynal, the game drew inspiration from Giallo films and Alfred Hitchcock's suspenseful works. It pioneered the use of 3D models in a pre-rendered environment with fixed camera angles, a technique later adopted as a staple on the first Sony PlayStation. Despite its significant success, Raynal departed Infogrames due to a lack of recognition, inadequate compensation, and the directive to create a new game with the same engine within a year. Subsequently, he founded his own company, Adeline Software.   Content Warning: The movies and genres referenced may not be suitable for some audiences.   Can You Hack Your Eyes to See Upside Down: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Euwp4C6Wt8A Dawn of the Dead (1978) Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_EviQj5tvA The Amityville Horror: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iwa120o7m7k No Film School - Giallo Firm: https://nofilmschool.com/giallo-film-genre-explained Horror Press - Horror 101 - Giallo: https://horrorpress.com/misc/5539/horror-101-what-is-giallo-and-why-does-it-matter/ Dario Argento: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dario_Argento Mario Bava: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario_Bava The Bird with the Crystal Plumage Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UztVF1nJTBo Suspiria: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPs2ExUL_bc Alfred Hitchcock: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_Hitchcock Top 10 Alfred Hitchcock Movies: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVoVdKOLP04 10 Things You Don't Know About Alfred Hitchcock: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9BS9SJxbxc 12 Common Camera Angles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SlNviMsi0K0 Popcorn: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ea5-eFU3oA Drakken: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5RlWuY3gXU TCW 064 - The Rise and Fall of Infogrames Part 1: http://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/rise-and-fall-of-infogrames-part-1/ TCW 065 - The Rise and Fall of Infogrames Part 2: http://podcast.theycreateworlds.com/e/the-rise-and-fall-of-infogrames-part-2/ Star Glider 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sg3uQM83dl8 Alpha Waves (DOS): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9qAtVwSIV8 PBS Monstrum - The Origins of the Zombie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIGmsxBMnjA Shadow of the Comet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Dwukeu8alE The Case of Charles Dexter Ward: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Va7WZT1lVsc 44 Lovecraftian Monsters: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDPqZUja9wU Alone in the Dark - Artwork - Goomba Stomp: https://goombastomp.com/in-retrospect-the-original-alone-in-the-dark/ Alone in the Dark - Retrospective, Analysis and Critique: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51YNZV5QAFc   New episodes are on the 1st and 15th of every month!   TCW Email: feedback@theycreateworlds.com  Twitter: @tcwpodcast Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theycreateworlds Alex's Video Game History Blog: http://videogamehistorian.wordpress.com Alex's book, published Dec 2019, is available at CRC Press and at major on-line retailers: http://bit.ly/TCWBOOK1     Intro Music: Josh Woodward - Airplane Mode -  Music - "Airplane Mode" by Josh Woodward. Support Eurogamer here: https://www.eurogamer.net/subscribe   It's a genuine pleasure to introduce one of the most well known faces of the UK games industry to you today, and more than that, someone who's helped bring among the biggest and most beloved game series to our shelves. I'm talking about the likes of The Witcher and Dark Souls - and they don't come much bigger than that.   I distinctly remember talking to this person around the launch of The Witcher 1, in fact, back when no one here knew what it was. Then several years later we were in a Scottish castle together at a lavish play test event for The Witcher 3 - an event they had a large hand in organising.   They've also had a significant hand in delivering many other games here, from Enslaved: Journey to the West to Ni No Kuni, and from Enter the Matrix to Pac-Man. There's a good chance they've been involved with many of the games you like in the more than two decades they've been promoting and marketing them.   Introducing Lee Kirton, once a receptionist at GT Interactive - doubled as a tips-line operator (his idea) - and most recently marketing and communications director at Bandai Namco UK, via Infogrames and Atari along the way. His is a story of hard work and a love for games I didn't realise ran so deep, and of course the many adventures he's had along the way.   The wonderful Lee Kirton, who's favourite game of all time is GoldenEye, and favourite movie is True Romance. The conversation also comes at a time of change for him, as he leaves Bandai Namco after more than 20 years, in the pursuit of something new. Learn more about your ad choices. Join this channel to get access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcT8... ****************************************************************************************** Alone in the Dark is a survival horror video game series, originally developed by Infogrames.[1] In most of the games, the player controls private investigator Edward Carnby, who goes to investigate a haunted mansion or town that is full of undead creatures. The series, particularly for its debut game, is widely acknowledged as a grandfather of survival horror and is often credited with the creation of the genre.[2][3][4][5] The original story was based on the writings of H. P. Lovecraft, although later games in the series drew inspiration from other sources including voodoo, the Wild West, and the works of H. R. Giger. Six installments of the series have been created, with various themes and locations. Two comic books and two films were created based upon the games. In September 2018, Atari, Inc. sold the Alone in the Dark franchise to THQ Nordic.[6] ****************************************************************************************** Grab a beer, a slice of pizza and come hang out with us.
