This week, we talked with our friend and long-time guest Michelle Gilbert, VP at Comcast (last time was episode 428, still relevant!) and she's got plenty of news. Comcast launched NOW TV, a streaming service that includes over 40 premium channels, plus Free Ad-Supported TV (FAST), and Peacock Premium. It costs $20/month. We dove into was the $42B infrastructure bill that was recently signed to give high speed broadband access to literally everyone in the country. Michigan will be getting $1.5B of it, which will hopefully help Randy's parents in Mid-Michigan keep up with his on-goings on social media. The White House announced a $42.5 billion dollar investment package that includes broadband roll-out to previously under-served areas of the country. A new Storm-Ready WiFi product will provide about 4 hours of internet access via the cellular network with a battery backup in case of household power outages. Comcast RISE is a grant program that this year will provide money, technology, education, and publicity to 100 small businesses across Macomb, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne counties. We re-visited into my favorite topic, Internet Essentials, which gives people at or below the poverty line high speed access at $10/mo. Please share this with your network as I feel this is a great service to the community. Lastly, we talked about shows we are watching and how Randy suckered me into subscribing to Paramount+. All in all, it was a great episode and always amazing to catch up with Michelle.

AI has entered the chat in a BIG way this year, but what's just tech hype and what's actually useful to you as a business owner? Jasmine Garnsworthy, creator of Female Founder World, debriefs her personal use case of how 3 of her favorite AI tools - including Chat GPT - make it possible for her scrappy team of two to sustainably publish large volumes of content AND plan in-person events all over the U.S. - all while retaining their brand originality and content quality. Having previously led editorial for mega media brands like POPSUGAR and Stylecaster, I loved Jasmine's honest hot takes on how AI is impacting the future of content - and why more women - especially entrepreneurs - need to participate. This conversation is equal parts thought-provoking as it is practical, with Jasmine sharing very specific examples of how you can apply these 3 tools to accelerate your content game, without a steep tech learning curve. Whether you sell services, digital offers, or physical products, this episode is a must-listen. Imagine making $500,000 dollars from one email. Today's guest actually did this, and she's giving you a word for word copy of said email in a doc to peruse AND participate in conversation with her later in this episode. Meet Merel Kriegsman, a former cleaning lady turned self-made millionaire specializing in high-end offers, and dedicated to helping you become the wealthiest woman in your lineage. While we love a good success story, we also recognize that overnight success is rarely a reality. The same is true of course with the $500K email, so Merel sets you up for success by first breaking down the exact long-term email newsletter formula that nurtured her audience to make a mammoth win like that possible. It'll come in the familiar phrase of “know, like, trust”, but I promise you Merel's specific approach to incorporating each element in your emails is so much more than a common cliche.View the transcript for this episode at: https://otter.ai/u/gbBkL_kTvq8fo7Jc_0cjcFrumQY?utm_source=copy_urlThank you to our sponsors:Watch The Road to RISE Documentary by Comcast RISE: https://bit.ly/RISEQ123new_CCEO_PodcastManage all your social media accounts + access in-depth social analytics you can't find anywhere else with Metricool! What gives you the marketing ICK? If you're tired of seeing gurus pose in front of ferraris and reliving the same formulaic webinar - complete with inflated value stacks and fear-induced FOMO - today's conversation will feel refreshing in more ways than one. We're joined by my friend Gloria Chou, an award-winning Small Business PR coach who has helped her community generate more than 1 BILLION free, organic views for their business through features in top tier media outlets. Gloria brings us a brutally honest analysis of her most recent program launch of PR Starter Pack, where she tested rejecting the most popular bro marketing tactics that have dominated the last decade. Her experiment resulted in not only a six figure launch, but half of her previous refund rate. She'll walk us through exactly what she ditched, why, and how that had a positive impact on her bottom line, mental sanity, and relationship with her students. Keep listening to usher in a new era of transparent, ethical marketing. The Pareto principle, more commonly known as the 80/20 rule, states that 80% of our outcomes result from only 20% of our efforts. With this in mind, it's vitally important for entrepreneurs to know what to amplify in their business and what to ruthlessly eliminate. Business growth strategist Frenchie Ferenczi conducted an experiment in pursuit of this truth, implementing a decision filter she dubbed “staying close to the money” to measure everything she spent time on in relation to how likely it was to produce a sale. Doing this helped Frenchie 4X her revenue in one year, and her case study today reveals the five key decisions she made to stay close to the money that revved up her revenue. Keep listening to discover how you can borrow Frenchie's approach to stay close to the money in your own business. Today's case study reveals how Zibby Owens - author, podcaster, and founder of Zibby Media - created brand buzz in a creative way by hosting book fairs in her own home. These book fairs generated $25,000 worth of sales in just 4 afternoons and priceless connections that continue to pay off. Zibby walks us through the whole process, from ideation to execution, and challenges you to think outside the norms of your own industry to bring your community together. Named NYC's “most powerful book-fluencer” by Vulture and a regular contributor to “Good Morning America”, you can tap into more Zibby on her podcast, “Moms don't have time to read books” and in her memoir: “Bookends: a memoir of love, loss, and literature.”Thank you to our sponsor:Partnerhero: to waive set up fees, go to http://partnerhero.com/ctc and mention “Cubicle To CEO” during onboarding!Connect with Zibby:www.podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/moms-dont-have-time-to-read-books/id1366633318www.zibbymag.comwww.zibbybooks.comwww.zibbyaudio.comwww.zibbyowens.comIf you enjoyed today's episode, please:Sign up for our text notifications at ellenyin.com/superfan so you can be the first to know when a new case study has dropped!Post a screenshot & key takeaway on your IG story and tag me @missellenyin & @cubicletoceo so I can repost you.Leave a positive review or rating on Apple Podcasts or SpotifySubscribe for new episodes every Monday.Want to hear all the ins and outs of what is happening in our business? If you love a scrappy startup story, today's case study is a true standout. I'm joined by Daina Trout, co-founder and Chief Mission Officer of Health-Ade, the fastest-selling Kombucha brand in America, currently carried in 60K stores across the country and doing an impressive $250 million in retail sales annually. Far from an overnight success story though, we're taking a trip down memory lane to the brand's early days in 2013, when they were quickly running out of money and only carried in 10 stores. With the three co-founders already at max capacity trying to keep the business alive and no funds available to hire traditional sales reps, Daina turned to Craigslist to recruit commission-based, independent sales reps to hit the pavement and open new accounts on their behalf. In just 2 weeks, Health-Ade's products exploded into 300 stores. Daina gives us her full playbook today for exactly how she incentivized total strangers to sell her products with no guaranteed pay, the training process, compensation plan, and lessons learned from being in the field interacting with customers. Press play to apply her scrappy sales strategy to your own business! Sheletta is hanging out with her friend Jill Hornbacher from Comcast to talk about the big celebration Xfinity had for all their Comcast RISE recipients and some new and exciting offerings available to new and existing customers.
We're excited to share our very first merger case study on the show - specifically, how Emily Hall, a presentation designer, and Heather Sager, a speaking coach, merged their two existing successful businesses into one - all in 108 days - that's barely over 3 months, to put things into perspective. The Speaker Co. is a presentation company focused on helping entrepreneurs create and deliver obsession-worthy presentations that make people fall head over heels for them and their offers. Anchored by its flagship program, The Speaker Society, The Speaker Co serves entrepreneurs with consulting and design services in the The Speaker Studio and through a range of in-person and virtual events. In our candid conversation, you'll get to hear the month-by-month timeline of how the 108 days of this merger played out from initial idea to the pair's public launch. If you're entering or thinking about entering into any sort of business partnership, whether affiliate, joint venture, merger, or co-founding, listen to Emily and Heather's tell-all for a crash course on what to avoid and what works.Thank you to our sponsors:Women + POC small business owners! Today's case study with guest Stacy Tuschl reveals the one critical number you need to identify and align your entire team around to grow your business - and no, the number is not your revenue or profit goals. Stacy is the founder and podcast host of Well Oiled Operations, a company helping small business owners around the world create systems that promote team accountability and eliminate the common challenge of CEOs becoming the bottleneck in scaling. The critical number is the focus of a one page document Stacy has aptly coined the “same pager” that, as the name suggests, gets everyone on the same page so each team member knows exactly what actions they're responsible for fulfilling and tracking on a weekly basis. One of Stacy's clients implemented this one page document in her business and added $35,000 of revenue without selling a new product.Keep listening to hear what to include in a “same pager” and how you can create one for your own business to reach your year-end goals. The concept of "digital equity" has been a hot topic as the FCC and private entities attempt to resolve the issue of accurate broadband mapping and uncover where resources need to be applied to get people connected in underserved and unserved rural areas. That work also extends into cities, where broadband might be available but factors like affordability or access to devices and digital training can limit the rate of adoption.Broderick Johnson, who joined Comcast just over a year ago, has a history of focusing on the pursuit of digital equity. In fact, it's right there in his title: EVP for public policy and EVP for digital equity. "This goes back … really decades," he explained, noting that the digital divide was part of the discussion during his time at the Clinton White House, where he served as deputy assistant to the president for legislative affairs. "Back then, it was more about access," recalled Johnson, who recently was in Denver to meet with community leaders and representatives from state and local government about how they and Comcast can better collaborate on digital adoption. Over time, he said, the discussion has "morphed into a more complicated set of issues" with respect to where investments are being made and what other barriers exist where deployments are happening. "We do know that there has been, over the course of these decades though, really difficult disparities based on race and economic class, and where people live," Johnson explained. Here's a snapshot of topics discussed during this podcast: How Johnson defines "digital equity" (2:20)Beyond access and affordability, other barriers are keeping consumer adoption at bay (4:05) An update on projects at Comcast focused on bridging the digital divide – including Internet Essentials, which was launched more than a decade ago, Project UP, Comcast Rise, and the deployment of more than 1,000 Wi-Fi-connected "Lift Zones" in venues such as community centers and libraries (6:30) The roles that community-trusted Digital Navigator volunteers can play in boosting Internet adoption with respect to getting access to devices and obtaining digital skills and training, and how that can translate to projects such as the FCC's Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) (10:30) — Jeff Baumgartner, Senior Editor, Light Reading See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Comcast today announced it will award $1 million in grants to 100 small businesses owned by women and people of color, including Black, Indigenous, Hispanic, and Asian American owners, among others, in Allegheny County. Eligible businesses can access and submit applications at www.comcastrise.com from June 1-14. Pittsburgh is one of five locations, including Atlanta, Detroit, Philadelphia, and Twin Cities, that was selected to award a $10,000 grant to 100 local businesses from the Comcast RISE Investment Fund, for a total of $5 million across 500 businesses. This will bring to $16 million the amount awarded since the inception of the Investment Fund. The first round of the Comcast RISE Investment Fund, announced in April of 2021, provided $5 million in grants to 500 small businesses owned by people of color in five cities: Philadelphia/Chester, Houston, Atlanta, Chicago and Detroit. Round two was announced in September of 2021, providing $6 million in grants to 600 small businesses in six locations: Miami, Houston, Oakland, Seattle, the Twin Cities, and Washington, D.C. To help drive awareness about round three of the program and provide additional support, training, and mentorship, Comcast has also awarded support to Neighborhood Allies, the Mon Valley Initiative and the University of Pittsburgh Institute for Entrepreneurial Excellence. Recipients will be announced later this summer. The monetary grants made through the Investment Fund complement the ongoing Comcast RISE core program, which has provided more than $50 million in technology and marketing resources to more than 8,000 entrepreneurs nationwide since RISE began in November of 2020. These resources, which have gone to 19 businesses in Western PA, include a TV campaign; production of a TV commercial or consulting services from Effectv, the advertising sales division of Comcast Cable; or computer equipment, internet, voice or cybersecurity from Comcast Business. Together, the Investment Fund and core program will support 13,000 small businesses owned by women and people of color, including Black, Indigenous, Hispanic, and Asian American owners, among others, by the end of 2022. Comcast RISE, which stands for “Representation, Investment, Strength and Empowerment,” was formed to give small businesses owned by people of color, from bakeries and barber shops to childcare centers and cleaning services, the grants needed to not just survive, but thrive. In November 2021, Comcast RISE announced a major expansion to all women-owned businesses nationwide

Comcast RISE has provided over $60 million in grants, marketing and technology services to more than 6,700 small businesses owned by people of color – including Black, Indigenous, Hispanic and Asian Americans – since it launched in November 2020. Comcast's Cynthia Saunders Copper "Coop" details how small businesses have been dealing with the ongoing impact of the pandemic, social unrest, and environmental events. Small businesses owned by people of color or women have been some of the hardest hit. According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, between February and April 2020, the number of active Black-owned businesses declined by 41%, Latinx-owned businesses declined by 32%, and Asian-owned businesses dropped by 25%, versus just 21% for the general population. Comcast RISE was created to invest in the success of these critical businesses by providing valuable and practical support. Comcast RISE, which stands for Representation, Investment, Strength and Empowerment, is part of Project UP, Comcast's comprehensive initiative to advance digital equity and help provide underrepresented small business owners with access to the digital tools and funding they need to thrive. Over the next 10 years, Comcast has committed $1 billion to programs like Comcast RISE and partnerships that will reach an estimated 50 million people with the skills, opportunities and resources they need to succeed in an increasingly digital world. Comcast RISE provides advertising and marketing consultations, media services, creative production and technology makeovers. These services include market research, a linear TV media schedule, production of a 30-second TV commercial and computer equipment, Internet, Voice and Cybersecurity services. Looking forward, Comcast RISE will continue to empower and strengthen even more racially and ethnically diverse small businesses that are the heart of our local communities across the country. More information and the applications to apply for either the grant program or marketing and technology services are available at www.ComcastRISE.com. Application deadline: June 17, 2022. This week, we got to chat with long time offender, Michelle Gilbert , the VP of PR from Comcast. We always like talking to her about the ways Comcast is giving back to the community. One is Internet Essentials, which offers home broadband for $9.95 a month. If you don't qualify for that, the Affordable Connectivity Program might suit you, which offers $30 off your current bill. Lastly, we talked about Comcast Rise, which gave $10,000 grants to people in the community to get back on their feet after the pandemic. And of course we ended the show talking about what we are currently watching. Hope you enjoy the show!

Are you a BIPOC owned business? Comcast RISE has been giving out 10-thousand-dollar grants, support services and resources to help these businesses thrive. The program has already awarded nearly 100 businesses in Greater Philadelphia and New Jersey grants along with technology and marketing resources. I speak to recipient Dewain Johnson from 215Media, a Philadelphia based creative agency, about the difference this program is making for his company and how other BIPOC owned businesses can apply.https://www.comcastrise.com/https://www.215media.com/author/dew215/For thousands of Philadelphians, the barrier to advancing to life sustaining jobs is reading and math literacy. The City of Philadelphia's Office of Children and Families works with community-based organizations to provide adult education to help residents build the skills they need to realize their personal professional and civic goals. I'm joined by Christine Piven, Chief of Staff for Office of Children and Families and Irina Sapiro, Educational Program Director and ESL Instructor and Learning Coach, New World Association.https://www.phila.gov/programs/adult-education/http://russworld.us/The School District of Philadelphia, many public charter schools, private schools, and dozens of summer youth programs (including summer camps, sports camps, childcare programs, and more) are looking for full-day and partial-day summer staff who can teach and/or work with children. Organizations need teachers, coaches, group leaders and operations staff. Most jobs pay $15/hour or more. We talk to Comcast Business' Aaron Mimran about the Comcast RISE program aimed at helping BIPOC small businesses. While the pandemic’s ripple effect has impacted many businesses, a recent National Bureau of Economic Research study revealed Black, Indigenous and People of Color-owned (BIPOC) organizations have taken a bigger hit. Nationally, the number of Black business owners plummeted from 1.1 million in February 2020 to 640,000 in April — a 41% loss in a couple of months — while the number of Latinx business owners dropped from 2.1 million to 1.4 million (32%) from February to March 2020. COVID-19 is not the only challenge impacting small and BIPOC-owned businesses, of course. They also face old and new difficulties due to systemic social and economic injustices, civil and social unrest, and environmental events — and these ongoing inequities have been further highlighted during the pandemic, including in our community. For their small businesses to survive over the next few years, BIPOC business owners will need to employ all of their skills, creativity, resources and capacities to stay viable and thrive. But the onus should not be entirely on them. Small businesses are the backbone of our economy. When they don’t make it, the entire country pays the price: skyrocketing unemployment rates, reduced consumer spending and less optimistic long-term forecasts for all businesses, among other effects. But when they succeed, we all succeed. That’s why companies with more resources should play a role in supporting small and minority-owned businesses — and why Comcast created a new initiative, Comcast RISE, in October 2020 to help these businesses address their challenges and succeed over the long term. The first wave of Comcast RISE — which stands for “Representation, Investment, Strength and Empowerment” — granted marketing, creative, media and technology services to small businesses owned by underrepresented groups. More than 700 Black-owned small businesses have received support, including eight based right here in Pittsburgh, and now, eligible BIPOC-owned small businesses can apply for the next wave of the program through May 7. Here’s what you need to know if you’re one of these small business owners. If your BIPOC-owned business is eligible — that is, at least 51% BIPOC owned, independently owned and operated, registered as a business in the U.S., in operation for more than a year, and located within Comcast’s coverage area – simply fill out the form on www.comcastrise.com/apply/. Many BIPOC-owned businesses have suffered from lack of access to resources. This is an opportunity to leverage a program that will provide support without many of the challenging criteria, because Comcast aimed to make the application process as easy as possible. We want businesses to gain the much-needed support that can help them stay viable. Their success is paramount to our economy and to the success of our country as a whole. We at Comcast are hoping Pittsburgh-area BIPOC businesses will take advantage of the opportunity to potentially obtain some assistance. We know the past year was difficult, traumatic and tragic for so many people and businesses within our community, and 2021 will continue to bring its own share of challenges. And we know Comcast, alone, can’t remedy complex, systemic issues. But we are deeply committed to helping to drive change and begin the long process of correcting social and economic injustices. Through Comcast RISE, we hope to create sustainable impact and meaningfully support the small businesses which are shaping our communities. It’s not just about the economy. It’s about ensuring equity, diversity and inclusion, and it’s the right thing to do.

This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. This past year, small businesses have been dealing with challenges from the pandemic to social unrest, and to help them, Comcast has offered its customers a new program called Comcast RISE. Deneiva Knight is here to share details. DENEIVA KNIGHT Independent small businesses are the backbone of our communities, and today, more than ever, many are struggling, including those owned by Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. We know that Comcast alone can't provide all the solutions, but we are deeply committed to playing a role in driving change. Through Comcast RISE, we aim to create sustainable impact and give meaningful support to the small businesses that are shaping our communities. If your business qualifies, you'll have the opportunity to receive marketing consultations, media placements, commercial creative production services, or tech makeover from Effectv and Comcast Business. Comcast recently announced their first round of Comcast RISE recipients, which included five Utah small businesses. Your business could be next! DEREK MILLER We encourage all eligible businesses to apply at ComcastRISE.com. I'm Derek Miller with the Salt Lake Chamber, and this is Speaking on Business. Originally Aired: March 22, 2021.

Executive Director and Program Director, Reagen Yeldell discusses Empowering Businesses of Color to further launch and support media opportunities.
I am so proud to welcome to our podcast a Betsy (Class 38) and a dear friend, Teresa Ward Maupin. In this episode, I chat with Teresa, Comcast SVP about her personal journey as an African American female, and "what it takes" to excel in a Fortune 50 company. Insights on her journey offer "CommonSense" lessons to others seeking to make a career in corporate America. They are both transferable and encouraging to every female and Person of Color. Teresa also shares details of Comcast's "WHY" behind their exciting Comcast Rise program and the upcoming Comcast Invest program. Both are phenomenal examples of "meaningful social change" in Black and other Communities of Color, disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 and social unrest. Sit back and enjoy our conversation, as much as we did. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/dr-l-d-bennett1/message
