After years of research, journalist Kathleen Lippa has written about the shocking crimes of a trusted teacher who wrought lasting damage on Inuit communities: Arctic Predator: The Crimes of Edward Horne Against Children in Canada's North (Dundurn Press, February 2025). In the 1970s, a young schoolteacher from British Columbia was becoming the darling of the Northwest Territories education department with his dynamic teaching style. He was learning to speak the local language, Inuktitut, something few outsiders did. He also claimed to be Indigenous — a claim that would later prove to be false. In truth, Edward Horne was a pedophile who sexually abused his male students. From 1971 to 1985 his predations on Inuit boys would disrupt life in the communities where he worked — towns of close-knit families that would suffer the intergenerational trauma created by his abuse. In this book, Kathleen examines the devastating impact the crimes had on individuals, families, and entire communities. Her compelling work lifts the veil of silence surrounding the Horne story once and for all. More about Kathleen Lippa: Kathleen Lippa is a Canadian journalist, born in Toronto and raised in St. John's, Newfoundland. Kathleen trained as a professional dancer at The Quinte Ballet School and The School of the Toronto Dance Theatre before embarking on a journalism career. At Memorial University, from which she graduated with a BA (English) in 1998, she worked on the student newspaper, the muse. Following graduation, she worked at a number of Canadian newspapers including The Express (St. John's) where she won a Canadian Community Newspaper Association award for arts reporting, The Hanover Post (Ontario), a number of newspapers under the corporate umbrella of the Northern News Services, 24 Hours (Toronto), and the Calgary Sun. For Northern News Services, after a short stint in Yellowknife, Kathleen served as Bureau Chief in Iqaluit, Nunavut. Her experience includes writing, editing, page layout and design, and photography. Her Northern experience was in a cross-cultural setting primarily reporting news from Inuit communities. After spending many years in Iqaluit, Kathleen now lives with her husband in Ottawa and St. John's. About Hollay Ghadery: Hollay Ghadery is an Iranian-Canadian multi-genre writer living in Ontario on Anishinaabe land. She has her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Guelph. Have you ever wondered what it takes to be successful, live by your own terms, and do it with integrity? In this episode, I have a very special guest, Donna Halper, who has been credited with initially catapulting the success of the band RUSH in the United States back in the early '70s. As some of you know, RUSH is my all-time favorite band, for many reasons, but mainly because they did it with hard work and never conforming to what the music industry wanted them to be. RUSH has taught me many lessons over my life, pretty crazy for a prog-rock band, but that is what makes them unique. Even if you are not a RUSH fan, I highly encourage you to listen to the episode, because we get into a whole host of topics about living a life of passion and integrity. Donna Halper is an author, educator, media historian, and radio consultant.  Donna L. Halper, PhD is an associate professor of Communication and Media Studies at Lesley University, Cambridge MA.  She is the author of six books and many articles.  Her most recent book is a newly revised and expanded second edition of “Invisible Stars:  A Social History of Women in American Broadcasting,” published in March 2014.  She is also the author of a well-received local history, “Boston Radio 1920-2010,” which tells the story of Boston radio in words and pictures.   Dr. Halper is a frequently published and widely quoted media historian. Among her many published articles is one about early radio in Boston, “Preserving the Story of Greater Boston's Pioneering Broadcast Stations 1XE and WGI,” which appeared in the AWA Review in 2018; and one about a priest who used radio to teach religious tolerance, “Father Michael J. Ahern: Boston's First Radio Priest,” which appeared in Boston's Catholic newspaper, The Pilot, in 2017. A collector of rare memorabilia related to the history of radio, she was awarded the 9th Annual Collectors' Prize by Historic New England in 2018.  Dr. Halper also writes about baseball history.  A talk she gave at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown NY, “Written Out of History: Women Baseball Writers, 1905–1945,” was published in 2019 in The Cooperstown Symposium on Baseball and American Culture, 2017–2018, ed. William Simons. McFarland & Co. And she has provided chapters for numerous books published by the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), including “Opening Fenway Park in Style:  The 1912 World Champion Red Sox,” and “The Miracle Braves of 1914.”   In addition to researching radio and baseball, Dr. Halper is a free-lance writer for numerous magazines, journals, encyclopedias, and websites.  One of her published essays, “How to Be a Skeptical News Consumer,” about the importance of fact-checking, was the #5 most-shared article of 2013 on the Skeptic Magazine website.  Dr. Halper's research on media history and popular culture has resulted in appearances on both radio and TV.  These include CBS Sunday Morning (where she was part of a segment on car radios), PBS/NewsHour, CTV News (Toronto), National Public Radio/Weekend America, History Channel, ABC Nightline, WBZ Radio and WBZ-TV (Boston), WGBH-FM and WGBH-TV (Boston), WBUR-FM (Boston), and a number of podcasts. Her appearance on the Sound Off Podcast, discussing her discovery of the rock band Rush, was the site's most downloaded podcast of 2017.  Dr. Halper attended Northeastern University in Boston, where she was the first woman announcer in the school's history, broadcasting a nightly show on the campus radio station beginning in October 1968.  She completed a BA (English), M.Ed (Counseling), and MA (English) at Northeastern; she received her doctorate in Communication from the University of Massachusetts/Amherst in May 2011, writing her dissertation on how early radio changed American society.   She has spent over four decades in broadcasting, including more than 29 years as a radio programming and management consultant in markets of all sizes,

In this episode Tim has a conversation with his high school teacher, who is still currently teaching and leading at Monrovia High School. Julie Brand, author of A Mother's Touch: Surviving Mother-Daughter Sexual Abuse joins us for a third time! With the #metoo movement reaching more places we've also heard many stories from men who have been sexual abused by female predators. Today we discuss actress Asia Argento who is one of the women that came out about Harvey Weinstein. It is alleged that she had a sexual relationship with a 17 year old young man. We talk about the impact that this kind of abuse can have on young men and why it is, in many ways, harder for them to come forward. Julie is one of the presenters at https://cacnc.org/training/.Julie Brand, M.S is with CAPER Consulting (Child Abuse Prevention, Education and Recovery). She can be reached via her website at www.caperconsulting.com.She is a powerful advocate for mental wellness through her own firm, CAPER Consulting: Child Abuse, Prevention, Education and Recovery, but during her two-and-a-half-decade long career as a guidance counselor in middle and high schools Julie watched over children with a fierceness she would not begin to understand until her late thirties. She dedicated CAPER Consulting to confronting the subject of mother-daughter sexual abuse and educating other professionals about the complex dynamics of maternal incest and how to intervene effectively on the behalf of victims. As early as 1988 Julie was nominated by her colleagues for the Reader's Digest "American Heroes in Education" program because of her child abuse prevention work. She began teaching workshops that were popular at other school districts and spoke at national conferences on the subjects of child abuse, adolescent depression, and bullying related to sexual and gender identity. By 2000 she had written a successful grant to establish a “lending library” with resource materials on child abuse. She also trained her colleagues though in-service courses on how and when to report cases of suspected abuse. At a more personal level, Julie’s counselling positions allowed her to encourage the children in her charge to focus on resiliency whenever she believed they might be exhibiting stress-related behaviors that were related to their own family dynamics. She believes “children know the difference between something done accidentally and something done ‘on purpose’” even though they may not be able to articulate it until they are older. Now semi-retired, Julie continues her advocacy of children’s mental wellness by sharing her own experience as a survivor of emotional child abuse and mother-daughter sexual abuse. Julie reports that the latter topic is “under-recognized, under-researched and under-reported” in her 2007 book, A Mother’s Touch: Surviving Mother-Daughter Sexual Abuse (Trafford Publishing). She explains that it was only after her mother’s death that she began to understand how her own childhood may have informed her career choice and how it helped her to recognize some of the more subtle signs of abuse in others. In 2005, Julie began offering private workshops and full-day training courses nationally on the topics of “The Best Kept Secret: Mother-Daughter Sexual Abuse”, “Resiliency 101: From Victim to Survivor” (since 2009), and “A Close-up Look at Female Offenders in Positions of Trust” (since 2009). Last year she launched a new workshop, “Providing Therapeutic Support for Victims of Female Perpetrators”.Julie earned a BA (English) at the University of Oregon, Eugene, an MS (Counseling and Guidance) from North Dakota State University, Fargo, and has done additional postgraduate work in her field.
