Shelby played some campfire guitar and Jess grew up surrounded by music and musicians, although she carried a deep fear of performing. Laura had an unspoken dream to play the violin. For full show notes visit www.valerielavignelife.com/natalie   Welcome Natalie!  PART ONE: Being Comfortable in your Own Skin  [3:40] You have one of the most unique and empowering stories I've ever heard. Could you share your journey to self love with us?  Natalie was born a rare condition called Right-Side Isolated Hemihyperplasia. Which is a rare condition that one side of the body grows faster than the other. It can show up in a variety of ways, for Natalie it was everything from the neck down. She was never really aware of her condition because she didn't know any different, until she was about 10 years old, when young girls start to become more aware of their bodies, other kids your age start noticing that you're different. So there was a whole series of things that happened around that time. Natalie became a lot more self-conscious. she had a significant limp, she stood off centre because it caused a-symmetry. This lead to some bullying, and a lot of insecurity around all of it. Around the age of 10, she went back to see doctors, to see what she could do, with hopes of being able to be "fixed" and look like everyone else. To her disappointment, the doctors didn't know a lot about the rare condition and said that there was an option for surgery down the road when she finished growing. And then the doctor said to her, "Try and look at the bright side, and be grateful. You're a pretty girl and it didn't effect your face." These words, although not meant to be hurtful, at the time, Natalie took those words to mean, hide your body and only show your face. And this is what she started to do, for the next 20 years. She felt shame, she felt that being different wasn't accepted or okay. But yet she felt like a confident person. She was hiding herself to feel "like everyone else" and to not let people know what she was hiding. It was a mental, physical, and emotional struggle for a lot of years. It also taught Natalie that words can be very impactful. [7:33] What were some of the things you did to help you cope with and over come the tough parts of these impactful life events?  There were some things that looking back, Natalie did like finding resources and tools to cope. She found so much comfort in the stories of other people who faced adversity. She was enamoured by their strength and their courage and aspired to be like that.  Over time, her own resilience started to build up. She was angry and confused, but thinks that in those moments you become stronger and more resilient. She didn't think that she realized how it was all happening for her. But she did begin to find comfort in it, even though she was still hiding her body.  She was still growing a lot as a person, and she found a lot of comfort and piece through expressing herself through hair and makeup.It was something Natalie did that could transform me and make me feel beautiful and confident, which has transferred to where she is now. Looking back it was important for her at the time.  [9:35] How was what you went through growing up shaped who you are today?  All of it does. Being born with a rare condition, losing my father at a really young age in a tragic way, having to go through a really painful surgery that had me bedridden for the better part of a year, it gave me this grit and this resilience to be able to do hard things. And to be able to see the end of the tunnel in a lot of situations. When you're in it if feels like the end of the world sometimes, but when you go through things enough, you really just come out with a different perspective. It really taught me valuable skills and built my character and strengthen my mindset. I'm stronger now, and no stranger to crisis. I don't believe that everything happens for a reason, but I do believe there are lessons to be learned in every situation that we go through. [11:10] Your mental and emotional strength is inspiring. When it comes to being comfortable in your own skin, what advice would you give women today?  I would say that, rather than giving your challenges and your struggles power, you need to take that power. You need to own it and embrace it, and you need to let it be what fuels you to find your purpose. Because, no body is perfect and I think that's really hard for a lot of us because what we see, we tend to fixate on like the things we don't have, or the things that we want. But I honestly feel like we are all unique and beautiful and that is our power. It really is. [12:41] How do we find that part of us that says, "I am beautiful" and "I don't have to be perfect?"  It took me many years to come to terms with my condition. I was angry, and I felt really alone and overtime my perspective just changed. And I think it changed in the perspective that I really believe that this was a gift rather than a curse. And I think it's really about changing how you look at things. And I think I was given this gift to empower other women. And by doing that, by empowering other women, I'm empowering myself. And every time I share my story, I become more and more confident myself, and feel like, this is my purpose. And there's nothing more powerful than feeling like you are actually living the life you are meant to live.  Listen, I held myself back for 20 years. It took me a long time. And there are still bad days. I'm not saying that everything is perfect, and that I still don't struggle, and it's okay to have those days, but those days will end, and tomorrow is a new day. And I think that having that perspective, and taking that fire or whatever it is in you and flipping that switch and using it as your power is so amazing when you can actually feel it. And know that when you embrace who you are, and you share authentically and vulnerably, and people will become more connected to you. Brene Brown talks about the power of vulnerability and how it is the key to connection. So for a lot of people who feel disconnected because of their struggle, they really need to learn that by being vulnerable they will find those connections that they're craving.  [15:15] You are the founder of Vent Blow Dry Bar. Tell us more about your business, what services you offer, as well as the purpose and mission behind these services?  I walked away from my career in 2015, and I set out to join the world of entrepreneurship. After 2 years of research and construction we opened in July of 2017.  At Vent Blow Dry Bar we offer blowouts, styling, and make up, in a unique luxury environment. Basically it's providing an exceptional service with a unique experience. It was really important to me to not be an other hair salon, I wanted to provide something different. So it's not meant to replace your hair stylist, it's meant to fill the gaps in between. Our clients sit at a style bar, there's music playing, there are TVs with rom-coms, we have a liquor license so we can serve some bubbly, and it's a really unique experience so that women can feel relaxed and get some much needed time back to themselves. Although it would seem like a simple service that we provide, it really isn't. There's so much purpose and a mission behind this. Personally, the value of this expression for me made me feel so confident, and beautiful, and I really wanted to create an environment for other women to feel the same way. PART TWO: LEAVING THE 9-5 FOR YOUR 24/7 [17:13] But you weren't always the CEO of your own company. Before that you had what society would call a "successful" career in politics and not-for-profit. Tell us about this leap into entrepreneurship. In 2015 I decided to leave my career and I was also approaching 40 so I think that played a bit of a role in that. It's funny how those numbers do something to you. I was really beginning to feel unfulfilled; to put it simply. I loved the work I was doing, and the career was amazing, and I always feel very lucky to have had that experience. But it was predictable. I am a planner and like to look at the 5 year, and 10 year goals that I have, and when I began to look 5 years ahead, it looked exactly the same. and I think that just kind of got my wheels turning. I had always been inspired by entrepreneurs and their willingness to take risks. My father was an entrepreneur. He was an architect and a designer, and I used to spend a lot of time with him going to work. I loved tracing over drawings, and hearing stories of people with these amazing businesses, and had the opportunity to see them unfold and come to fruition. I thought it was the most amazing thing. So I actually thought I wanted to follow in his footsteps and become an architect, and build other peoples dreams for them. But really, over the years and my own experiences, what I realized was that I wanted to be the architect of my own journey. My father was in a tragic accident when I was 13, went missing, and was never found. So life took such a turn. Another turn. And it was all around the same time, between the ages of 10 and 13, was just not a good time. But life became really challenging and I think I really had to dig deep again and find ways of making the best of the situation that I had. It always made me really determined to work hard for the things that I wanted because nothing was given to me. Nothing. And so I look back on my life and it was a great life. Married almost 20 years, three wonderful kids, great career, but I was not being challenged in the work that I was doing anymore. And it was scary, it was something I had to think long and hard about, because I knew what if felt like to have nothing, and to risk everything we had built for our family, was a scary thing. But I also know that I didn't want to look back on my life with any regrets, of not trying. So that's what fuelled me to walk away and start Vent, and in turn, be able to share my journey in such a personal way that I never envisioned, so although opening Vent has been such a rewarding experience, it's all the off chutes of that, that have been spectacular. [21:05] Was your family really supportive of the transition? What were some of the biggest obstacles during the transition, and how did you overcome them?  As soon as I could show my husband what I was trying to do; we went to New York City and I showed him where I thought it was being done really well, I explained how I wanted to do it differently, and the purpose behind it, he knew. He knew the transformation in myself when I had my hair done. He said, "you have a skip in your step." And he understood that piece of it and he was very supportive from day one and he didn't need a lot of convincing. He is also much like me and we're planners, so we really did plan and wrote a business plan that is probably longer than any business plan you'll ever see in your lifetime.  There was definitely pushback from a lot of people, and I think that's just because it was so different. It was basically leaving something that I was really good at, to starting something that I really knew nothing about. But they also knew the person that I was, and that I was going to put everything into it, and work really hard and learn, and I think overtime people did become more supportive, and there were naysayers, but I think that's what pushes you harder; to just prove them wrong.  It was a huge learning curve. I didn't know anything about being an entrepreneur. I didn't know anything about opening a business. I knew how to lead a team, I knew the leadership style that was important to me, I knew that I wanted to create a business that didn't just serve me, but it served my clients and my team. I think when you have core values like that, and you let those guide you, then the rest falls into place. [23:35] Is there something you wish you knew then, that you know now? what advice would you give to someone leaving their 9-5 to start their own brick-and-mortar business?  There's a few things, I think I made a few rookie mistakes for sure, and one of them was not understanding the value of community. This was huge, and I know this now, but in the beginning, I left a career that was very - was supported by a team and then I went to start something new, by myself. And it's very isolating. You get in your own head and you can question a lot of things along the way, and it's very difficult. And it wasn't until I found the value of networking and finding the value of a community of like-minded women that could provide a lot of support along the way, that things red ally changed. I would really advise anyone who wants to start a business is to find a community. Find a tribe of women that are going to cheer you on and support you through the ups and downs because there are a lot of them. That has been really key. [26:16] As a mom and entrepreneur aka "Mompreneur"...  How have you created healthy boundaries? What does work-life balance look like to you?  This is always such an interesting question, and I don't know that I agree with the term because it would imply that there is an equal balance on both sides, and I don't think there ever is. There's always going to be more demands on one side or the other. It's going to challenge you ever day. I think for me the difference might be that politics wasn't 9-5 either.  So from the start of my career and the start of being a mom, my husband and I have been a great team, and we figured out how to balance life and work and dreams and careers and all the things that we want to achieve, together. Honestly, he and I have a great system to make sure that our kids are always supported. And that we also feel supported in what we're doing. I think that has been really critical because you can't do this without a supportive partner, and I think that the other piece of this is that my kids are a little bit older, so I've been able to include them in as much of the process as possible. I think it's a unique experience for them, to see their mom completely pivot at the age of 40, and to see that nothing has to be forever if you're not happy. If you want to change you can change, you can do anything you want to do. So I have really tried my best to include them in all of that. I think that's been helpful because they understand when I need to pour into my work a little bit more, they understand. I always try and be there for the most important things. I try to really work in pockets of time the best that I can, and I'v become really good at doing that and just getting things done, and I think it really works. There are definitely things that are hard because I have to miss some stuff, but my kids understand and I make sure that I'm there for the things that are really, really important to them. [29:25] You and I are similar in the way we both value our morning routines. Walk us through your morning: start to finish!  This is something I also had to learn throughout my journey; the value of making time for myself, because as an entrepreneur, as a business owner, as a mom, there are lots of demands on my time, and I was usually the last person to get any of it, and that didn't end up well for me so I really went back to the basics. During all those times of struggle, what were the things that served me and pouring into me was really that.  I get up really early. That's when there's nobody else awake, nobody needs me, and I can just dive into the things that really serve me. So I get up at around 5/5:30am and I spend a lot of time journalling and practicing gratitude, and meditating as much as possible. Sometimes I do that more than once a day. Just to get re-aligned with where I want to be, what I want to accomplish, what my mindset needs to be that day. It's really, really important for me.  I exercise every day. This is something I have to do, sometimes I do it twice a day if it's possible. But it's moving my body. It's something that keeps me where I need to be.  Then I spend a lot of time on personal development. I love to read, podcasts are my jam. I am always listening to a podcast. Honestly, podcasts have been really key in supporting me through this journey. Because it's the stories that are shared, the real stories of people, that have gotten me through some tough times.  You see the memes of being an entrepreneur, it's up and down, up and down and that's really accurate so to be able to share my story, hopefully it helps others, but also these stories of others has really helped me as well. What does Joy look like for you?  Heading into the holidays this time of year can be especially hard for some people and as part of a work-life balance episode, I thought I would share some things that might help you not only discover how to find positivity every day but also what you can do to harness this feeling and apply tips to your everyday life. Recently, this topic came up in a conversation about how joy is power.  Think about that for a moment.  When we feel joy, it is hard for negativity to take hold and bring us down.  Applying this to our working life first, when we smile and feel good the effect seeps into every aspect of our day.  Conversely if we are feeling frustrated, small things can make us self-doubt and feel less than about ourselves.  I started this podcast to help empower marketers-specifically women in our industry who are looking for more-opportunities, expanding your network, gaining visibility with leaders in your organization, getting promoted and finding confidence.  Here is a real-world situation: Imagine you are in a meeting, and there is an opportunity to voice your idea but a colleague seizes the moment and you miss out.  Our body language and demeanor can quickly give away how we are feeling inside-and naturally it is more the opposite of joy-anxiety, sadness, self-doubt can start whispering in you ear.  The next time the opportunity comes your way-it may be easier to just say nothing instead of subjecting yourself to those feelings. Now-take that same scenario and close your eyes.  As you enter the room-you have a smile on your face.  It actually makes you stand a little taller and you feel confident.  While others are speaking, you smile in appreciation of their comments.  And when it is your turn to express that idea, you feel confident and without hesitation.  If the colleague mentioned earlier tries to cut you off, you maintain that smile and ask that you are afforded the chance to finish your idea. Same situation-but the outcome will be vastly different.  In the second one- you find that you are in control-because you have chosen your own joy.  No matter how awesome your workplace is, there will always be at some point a situation that can pop the happiness bubble and move you from feeling on top of the world to not so great. Now you may start to say-yes but I have reasons for not feeling happy at this moment.  I am sure this can be true.  But if any of us want to advance our careers, change perceptions or improve our health-we need to tap into joy, hold on to it, and the next part is super important-send it back out into the world. For busy marketers, it is easy to get lost in the tasks of it all and miss the chance to hone the joy effect in your daily practice.  Don’t get me wrong-I don’t always feel joyful.  But I have observed that this idea of happiness has a direct correlation to success and to achieve it, we need tools to stay on track.  And once we express this joy at work, it will spill over into our personal lives.  There are traps that can cause us to not find our joy. And many physical and physiological things that can also impact how we are able to process positivity.  So, what can we do to stay on track and gear up for the last two months of the year if you are listening to this episode when it releases it is the beginning of November.  Depending on where you live, the weather has turned colder, there is less sun and it can also impact how we feel. 10 Ways to Add Joy and Build Your Personal Power Get enough sleep. One of the first physical ways we can lose our happiness is when we are simply over-tired.  Roll back the bedtime commitment and get 7 hours minimally of sleep.  Think about when you are exhausted how easy it is to feel short and frustrated-and when you feel rested.  You may say-everyone knows now that sleep is one of the number ways to maintain health-but are you getting enough?  Most of us get less than 7 hours, or it is intermittent.  I have a sleep hack to share-the app AAPTIV actually has sleep meditations. I use it almost every night either going to sleep or when I can’t sleep. Express gratitude. Every day, I write 5 things I am grateful for in my Start today Journal.  Rachel Hollis has these journals-link in the show notes and I can honestly say it is not only a dream maker but the gratitude fills up the cup.  Rachel suggests the things we write should be small-it can be someone opening the door for you when your arms are full to giving up a seat on public transit when you were tired. Be thoughtful. My favorite quote is by Maya Angelou-People will forget what you say, they will forget what you do, but they will never forget how you made them feel.  I personally get way more joy out of giving than receiving.  It is something I try to incorporate always to help lift others up.  Especially if I am having a difficult day-I try to do something for someone-either a stranger or it can be someone I know. Start the morning fresh. Resist starting your day on your phone. I know.  This is one I have to work at-and am not always good at.  But in a previous episode 15, I talked about productivity.  When we feel less productive, it has a direct impact on how we feel-and less joyful. Just say no. It is so tempting to say yes when someone asks for help.  I am very guilty of over extending and wanting to do things beyond time constraints.  I now say “Does this give me joy?” Make your self-care a priority. Rachel Hollis has a 5 to Thrive strategy that is very effective.  I encourage anyone listening to try it and see how it goes: Drink at least half of your body weight in water Work out at least 30 minutes every day Get up 30 minutes early Give up one food for 30 days-sugar for example or something you know isn’t serving you. This is just for our women listeners-but if you are feeling out of sorts it could be hormones, low vitamin D, Thyroid or other things that happen to us and if untreated can lead to more serious illness.  When we don’t feel our best it definitely impacts how we express ourselves at home and work. Do one thing every day that makes you smile. It can be looking at YouTube and laughing at a funny video.  I will share with you here a video about what it is like to be on a conference call-link in the show notes.  Makes me laugh every time. Take time out in the day to breath fully. We hold our breath and it can have adverse effects on how we feel. Smile even when you don’t feel like it. Walking into a tense meeting, your inclination may be to shrink down, sit with your legs crossed and shoulders down.  Smile, visualize joy, imagine you are in a place that makes you feel happy and express yourself to others in this light. They are our backbone and one of the main reasons we can do what we do.   We touch base on many great topic's, many of which we survived ourselves. Building a company is a long hard process and many times we can forget that our families are along the ride with us. Communication is key to making the daily grind work. We discuss being supportive of one another, creating a schedule that works for the whole family, what we did to get through the messy middle, and the importance of work life balance. This week we are diving into Behaviors to Adopt in Rachel Hollis's Girl Stop Apologizing book. We cover Chapters 10, 11, and 12. Chapter 10: Stop asking PermissionThis chapter includes the hot button topic of the label GIRLBOSS. I have a differing opinion than Rachel offers in the book as I personally love the title. I don't feel it marginalizes me or leaves me less than qualified. I embrace the title and am glad to do all things as a female. I discuss how women's brains work differently than men's and I acknowledge that while I think I can do anything men can do, I don't want to be labeled one of the boys. Chapter 11: Choose One Dream and Go All InI was a stay at home Mom for 10 years and did that with all that I had. Then, I launched a business, put my head down, and committed to growing it for 2 years. I gave it all my dedication during that time. After that, I committed to bringing awareness to the human trafficking cause and mentoring survivors. This podcast followed that and I spent six months focused on its growth and success. I am a multifaceted entrepreneur that believes we can do all the things, we just can't do them ALL at once. 
We have to give our focus to one thing at a time then move on to the next. I had the chance to meet Christy Wright a while back before launching The Power Project. Her advice to me was to find your one key theme that rings true in all that you do in life and business. Focus on that and make sure it applies to everything you speak about, post about, and put into the world. Find out how your audience wants to learn and focus on that one thing. Do they want retreats, ladies nights, a podcast, a blog. Focus on that one avenue and serve them there. Chapter 12: Embrace Your Ambition What does the Bible say about ambition? As christians, we've mostly grown up hearing ambition as a bad word. The most commonly referenced scripture I remember is Phil 2:3 “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself”However, here is another scripture that tells us to work hard, mind our own business, and focus on our own achievements: 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12And to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you, 12: so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody. Ambition: definition: a strong desire to do or to achieve something, typically requiring determination and hard work. Greek meaning: “to esteem as an honor”. Ambition on its own is not bad. Just like money on its own is not bad. “The love of money…”Its what we do with it. Do we use our ambition to bring glory to us or glory to him? He put that drive in our hearts. Are we giving him credit for it? Are we bringing glory to him through what we accomplish with it? Are we following what he has laid out for us and trusting his understanding and not our own? Are we saying yes to his call or are we following our own call? When I was first called to the Human Trafficking cause, I was concerned that I was trusting my own ambition. I wanted to make sure it was from God and not my own thought process. My good friend, and pastor's wife, pointed out that the best way for me to realize it was from God was that it scared me and it wasn't something I would ever choose to do on my own. So, that's how I guage things moving forward. Does it scare the crap out of me? Probably from God and not me…. Now don't get me wrong, use intuition and common sense here. Stepping into a pit of rattle snakes: not from God…. If I don't have to struggle with a decision, pray about it, or weigh the odds, it's probably my own ambition. This week in Chapters 7, 8, and 9 of Girl Stop Apologizing Book Study, I'm talking about my own personal comparison trap and how I almost let it keep me from launching this podcast and finishing my book. Here is an excerpt from the book that I read on the episode today: "Wait! Someone else has already done this. Someone else has already written the book I've dreamt of writing my entire life. Someone else has already created a movement for women everywhere to be inspired to live bigger lives, dream more, make an impact. Someone else has already, in the most brutally honest and lovingly compassionate way possible, told women to quit making their freaking excuses and live their best lives! Someone else has not only stepped into this space, but she IS this space. There's not a woman I know that doesn't know about this book, rock a Made for More hat, watch her FB lives. She has a movie for goodness sakes! She's done it: Bigger, better, and most importantly, Before me. Well, that's great! This is just about as good as that time I started doing yoga on the kid's swim mat in the lake as a means of multi-tasking while the kids played, only to find out that “Boga” has since turned into the newest and greatest thing since slice bread. I totally invented that. And, I totally had these words and this vision before she ever told me to wash my face. Oh yeah, and I was washing my face and telling others to do so first also. She beat me. While I had sat back thinking about finishing my book and launching my podcast, she had written my book. Now what? I kept watching, I kept listening, and I kept sharing. “It's not important who wrote the book anyway,” I thought. “It's just important that the message is out there, and I will fully and completely support it in any way possible! But, dang! Just think, if I would have gotten my book out first.” In Chapter 8, WHAT WILL THEY THINK, I talk about God's call being greater than anyone else's opinion.What will God think if you don't answer that call? Have you ever thought that you're more worried about other's opinions of you than you are God's? Have you been concerned that not answering his call is a form of disobedience? Would you rather keep Seventh Grade Sally Happy than the Supreme Creator of the Universe? Are you more worried about getting an invite to the annual block party than you are a seat in Heaven? Seriously, who are you listening to? Who are you in relationship with? I can promise you that when you get so laser focused on your purpose and your relationship with Jesus, you find yourself caring less and of what people think and more about the people you can reach. When you know that you are on your own unique journey of following your purpose in life, others' opinions become trivial. Do you want to make an impact? You're going to have to make waves.In the discussion over Chapter 9, GOOD GIRLS DON'T HUSTLE, I share how my hustle has been an innate characteristic and I never stopped to think about whether or not I should. I had a natural born desire to strive for greatness. This week we are digging into the Girl Stop Apologizing Book Study that we are currently doing over on Facebook in the Power Project Community. We cover chapters 4. I'm Not Enough to Succeed5. I Can't Pursue My Dream & Still Be a Good Mom/Daughter/Employee 6. I'm Terrified of Failure This is not a regurgitation of Ms. Rachel Hollis's words but instead is my take on the chapters and how you can apply them to your life. I cover how I felt like a failure after dropping out of college and how I didn't feel qualified enough to pursue my dreams for the next fifteen years. I share how it took a good friend speaking into me for me to accept God's call and follow my purpose. When I'm feeling unequipped and unsure of what the next step looks like, I refer to Esther 4:14 "Who knows that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this. This is how I have the assurance to step out of my comfort zone and know that I can make an impact. The next scripture that I lean into is Ephesians 3:20 "Now, to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us..." This helps me remember that while we are not enough on our own, the power that is installed within us is enough. We are enough through Jesus. CALL TO ACTION: List your strengths. What are you good at? What makes you good at that subject? Are you a good friend? Is it your ability to listen, over advice, be compassionate? Are you a good baker? Does that mean you can follow directions and procedures or improvise when need be. Write out these characteristics of your strengths that are uniquely yours. Underneath that, write "I am Enough through Him." Tape this to your bathroom mirror, vanity, desk, car dashboard and read it aloud every day. In the next section, I talk about being a Stay at Home Mom with a desire to serve a bigger purpose. I talk about what it looked like to have the conversation with my husband and kids and bring them into the dream. When I started pursuing my dream it made my husband and kids look at me through a different lens of respect and admiration as well as made our time together more special. Then I share the story of Deborah & Jael. Have you heard of them? They were strong women in the Bible that led armies and defeated evil commanders, and they were both married. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that they were less worthy wives for following God's call on their lives. Go check that story out in Judges 4.And finally, we talk about the Fear of Failure and how we have to move past that to achieve success. After all, success lies in a silliness to fail. That is singlehandedly the most key ingredient to achieving success. If you stay paralyzed in fear, you'll never know what you were capable of. I also share how not pursuing your purpose because of fear can look like disobedience to the Lord. I'm Not a Goal Oriented Person 3. I Don't Have the Time This is not a regurgitation of Ms. Rachel Hollis's words but instead is my take on the chapters and how you can apply them to your life. I cover how I was raised to want to get married and have babies but always had lofty career goals of my own. I also share how to become a goal oriented person and how to manage your time. How to set goals and crush them:1. List Your Goals Whether you are detail oriented or prefer to enter all the details into Excel or youre more of a free thinker, put your goal setting cap on. List every goal you want to accomplish this year. From the stretch goals to the easily attained goals, put them all down. 2. Prioritize Your Goals This is where focus comes into play. What goals are the most important for you to accomplish. If you're a high achiever, you most likely want to accomplish all the things right now! But, if you don't give them priority, we can't give them the attention and focus they need. 3. Sort Your Goals Separate your stretch goals from your small goals. Small goals give you small victories along the way to achieving your strtetch goals. 4. Set deadlinesA goal without a deadline is a dream. Break down how you will reach that deadline. If you're writing a book in the next twelve months and you plan to write 60,000 words, do the math. 60,000/12=5000. You'll need to write 5000 words per month in order to achieve your goal by your deadline. 5. Take ACTION This is where most people stop pursuing their goals. A goal without action is like a vehicle without fuel. What can you do each day to achieve those goals? If you want to lose 50 lbs in a year, that's 4 lbs per month and one lb per week. So, create a daily diet and excercise plan to achieve that goal. What action can I take today to achieve my weekly, monthly, and annual goals? Chapter 3: "I Don't Have Time" A few things to know: Time is an illusion. We all have the same 24 hours in a day but it's what we do with them that makes a difference. You don't have a lack of time, you have an ownership problem. You haven't owned your schedule, your months, weeks, hours, minutes. It's simply a time management problem. Here are the ways I manage my schedule: 1. On Sundays, I look at my week. What does it look like? What is on the schedule? I follow up with the appointments I have scheduled to confirm that we are still on. I check to see if the kids' schedules have changed and new appointments need to be added. 2. During my work hours that are scheduled, I put my phone and computer in Do Not Disturb mode so that I can focus on work. I do not fill the space with household chores or conversations. This is simply work time. 3. I maximize the times that I am most productive. Have you heard of Owl vs. Lark? An Owl is a person that is more productive at night and a Lark is someone that is more productive in the morning. Realize your most productive and most creative times. Schedule appropriate work during those times. 4. I plan my week with my family. Everyone plays a part here. My husband and I share an ical that keeps all of the family appointments shared between us so that we both have a heads' up of what is going on. I use different email addresses for different schedules: Family (ALL the things), Kids, Beauty Business, & The Power Project. This way I can clearly see where my time is being spent. Trust me when I say, I was not always this organized with my time.
