Picture a terrified lost dog, darting in and out of traffic, sleeping under brush in the desert, driven by fear to the point where it won’t allow anyone near. Its flight drive is so powerful it doesn’t even recognize its owner. Enter H.A.R.T.T. – the Humane Animal Rescue and Trapping Team, a volunteer-based Arizona nonprofit that finds and captures lost family pets, homeless dogs, and stray cats who are severely injured. H.A.R.T.T.'s team of more than 100 trained volunteers specialize in humanely trapping shy and skittish pets who can't be rescued through traditional means. Cheryl Naumann started the organization in 2017. A long-time animal welfare advocate whose experience including serving as president and CEO of the Arizona Humane Society, she also runs a luxury pet boarding service with her husband in North Phoenix. She puts long hours in for her “day job” as a human resources executive for a large national corporation, but finds time outside of work hours to be not only HARTT’s founder, but one of its most prolific volunteers, personally rescuing nearly 1,000 animals since 2012. The equipment and techniques she’s developed have been so successful, Cheryl now leads humane trapping workshops twice a year and has taught the skills to more than 600 people across the U.S. and in five other countries. Renaissance person? Or just casting her net really wide? A chat about a beginner-band teaching strategy which Ms. Stinson piloted at her East Windsor (Connecticut) teaching gig, which she calls “Culture Before Technique”. STINSON BIO: Zoe Stinson is a music educator and instrumentalist originally from the Capitol Region of New York, and currently teaches grade 5-8 Band, Chorus, and General Music at East Windsor (CT) Middle School. Zoe grew up studying saxophone, cello, and voice, but always gravitated towards saxophone. In 2016, Zoe was selected to perform at NYSSMA Conference All-State, and to perform in the International Performance Series at Carnegie Hall. Zoe furthered her saxophone studies at Eastman, Crane, Hartt, and University of Oklahoma summer programs throughout high school and college, and has performed in masterclasses for virtuosos such as Arno Bornkamp, Chien-Kwan Lin, and Christopher Creviston. In 2017, Zoe attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst for Saxophone Performance. While she studied at UMass, Zoe was heavily involved in numerous activities as a student musician. Zoe was initiated into Tau Beta Sigma, National Honorary Sorority for Collegiate Bands, and has since become a life member. Zoe performed in the University Wind Ensemble, Symphony Band, University Choral, Chapel Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble I, Marimba Bands, and the University of Massachusetts Minuteman Marching Band, for which she served as a Drum Major for two seasons. Aside from larger ensembles, Zoe was also associated with several notable chamber ensembles including the 4/4ths Saxophone Quartet, and the Rebel Saxophone Quartet, which traveled to Virginia for the Navy Band Saxophone Symposium in 2019 with their tour program. As a soloist, Zoe has performed multiple solo recitals and been invited as a guest performer at many others. Her most recent recital, “A Showcase of the Baritone Saxophone”, was performed entirely on the baritone saxophone in effort to legitimize the instrument in the classical medium. Zoe was also a concerto competition winner at UMass in Spring 2020 performing Rhapsody by Andre Waignein on the alto saxophone. Zoe has recently begun her professional career as a music educator, and is a member of the Gordon Institute for Music Learning. Specializing in instrumental instruction, Zoe applies Music Learning Theory in her classroom with a focus on ear training. Outside of the classroom, Zoe still enjoys playing her cello to this day, and plays baritone saxophone with recreational ensembles such as the “Salsa Train” salsa band in Springfield, and “The Onlys,” her fusion rock trio in New York. On the weekends, she occasionally likes to hop into the driver seat and drive for PVTA in Amherst, MA. If we think consumers are looking at arts organizations just to experience great art, we've got it all wrong. Instead, customers are “hiring” organizations to solve a problem, meet a need, or do a job they need done in their life. That's the premise of Jobs to Be Done Theory, developed by Harvard Business Professor Clayton Christensen. In this episode, Clayton Christensen Institute Chief of Staff Ruth Hartt, who's a former opera singer, joins Aubrey to talk about the Jobs to Be Done framework through an arts lens to better market to new audiences.Ruth also shares examples from the wild — real classical music ads done right and wrong — as she unpacks Jobs to Be Done Theory. If you want to see the visuals Ruth talks about, you can watch that part of the conversation here.Visit Ruth's website and subscribe to her arts marketing hall of fame at https://www.cultureforhire.com/.

Drawing examples from the world of music and art, we learn how Ruth is applying Jobs to Be Done theory to become a true customer champion and turn arts marketing on its head. You'll find yourself nodding along with Ruth as she takes us through stories of marketing malpractice, and how a few brave innovators and Jobs to be Done approaches are helping to breathe life into a dying industry. In This Episode (01:59) Dan welcomes Ruth to Dan Nestle show. (03:49) On meeting Ruth as part of the uprising at an anti-conference. (05:40) Ruth journey as a musician and educator to joining the Clayton Institute. (06:18) Talking about harassment and pregnancy discrimination. (09:50) Absorbing, learning, reading, and listening to knowledge coming her way. (16:01) Explaining Job to Be Done and why people buy. (26:33) On being a relevant strategist and customer champion. (38:40) Discussing the epidemic of loneliness and how to tackle it. (40:17) Dan elaborates on the three-box solution. (52:15) Job To be Done going beyond just a marketing solution. (54:58) How can people discover classical music and the arts today. (59:53) What Dan discovered about classical music. (1:03:18) How reaction videos can create an impact. (1:05:33) Ruth shares a book with the audience. Notable Quotes “All of a sudden, I am thinking, we have got a marketing problem in the arts world. Because we are not considering the customer at all. In fact, traditional arts marketing ignores the customer, and so does the theory change the game for marketers in the arts world and I sort of set out to figure out what that looks like.” – Ruth (11:33) “We need to understand the functional need, the emotional context, and the social context in their life that causes them to buy. Sort of in a nutshell, people buy not because of who they are but because of who they want to become. Or because of what they want their life to become or their world to become. The way Clayton Christensen always puts it is they say, people hire things to help them make progress on a circumstance in their life.” – Ruth (16:39) “There is the value chain architecture; how the business is run and how value gets delivered. There is the value of proposition, and then there is the customer. Those 3 elements if you change any one of those, it's a non-linear innovation. And that a way you can sort of validate whether or not what you are doing is innovative.” – Dan (42:09) “The forces of progress. There are forces that are in someone's circumstance that are pushing him towards a solution. There is a solution that has great things about that is pulling them towards it. But then there are these habits of the past and anxieties about the new solution that are forcing them away and unless the pull towards the new solution outweighs the anxieties and the habits of the past, you are not going to sell whatever it is you are trying to sell.” – Ruth (43:55) “How do you get people to buy in, right? Some of it is creating this relevant doorway; relevant meaning something that is familiar to them. There are so many Queen fans out there. And for them to see a concert advertised as Queen with full orchestra, that's a draw! I would be interested in that. I am a Queen fan.” – Ruth (1:01:39) About Ruth Hartt Ruth Hartt is a classically trained opera singer and music educator. When it comes to Senior care, there are a dizzying array of options. Most people don't even start thinking about where mom or dad might live if they fell and had an accident until the last minute. And that's not a good time to start shopping. To talk about that today, Loe Hornbuckle and Christina Hartt with The Sage Oak.

When you receive a brochure in the mail from your local symphony or visit a website for your regional orchestra, what do you typically see? You're very likely going to read flowery language about the beauty of the art and the skill of the artists, accompanied by photos of the conductor and the musicians on the stage. You probably won't see the audience or how the experience might impact them. The arts sector, however, is in the midst of an audience crisis – and the time has come for arts organizations to stop ignoring their customers. In this episode, The Christensen Institute's Ruth Hartt, who spent 17 years as an opera singer, joins host Katie Zandbergen to discuss how the Jobs To Be Done framework can be used as an effective tool by arts organizations, helping them to better engage with and grow their audiences. While many in the arts world have been operating under the comfortable assumption that they've nailed customer motivation, believing that “Help me to experience art performed at its highest level” is the primary motivator for ticket purchases, this approach fails to truly understand customers' struggling moments and the reasons why they may hire an orchestral performance or an evening out at the opera. Armed with techniques and insights drawn from Jobs Theory, arts organizations can successfully shift from simply trying to push tickets to actually helping their customers and their communities through the arts-focused experiences that they provide. Listen to learn more about the opportunities for audience engagement and growth that await those arts administrators and marketers who recognize that the world revolves not around the performances they stage but rather around their customers and the progress they're seeking to make in their lives.

Entertaining, loveable, lyricist and artist, Ella Hartt has been writing music since the age of 6. “My first song was a rap about our family dog. I hope no one ever asks me to play it live,” she laughs. Influenced by her family roots and radio hits, Ella switched genres to combine the catchy lyrics of pop tracks with country storytelling. Her first release, “Where is that guy?” gained international interest on internet radio across Canada, New Zealand and Europe while her second single,“Heartstrings” placed as a semi-finalist in the 2019 International Songwriting Competition. Ella has defined her personal writing style with unique titles, honest lyrics and quirky references, which made her one of NSAI's “One to Watch” for 5 consecutive months. Her reach has been global, having penned songs with other writers across Canada, Australia, South Korea and The United States, including some of country music's greatest, Liz Rose (Taylor Swift) and Larry McCoy (Thomas Rhett). After a pandemic long break, Ella is back with her new single, The Story You Tell Yourself. Recorded remotely in her pajamas, Ella shares an uplifting message reminding others to believe the best about themselves! As she puts it, “You're one of a kind like no one else. You're The Story You Tell Yourself!”

The incredibly talented Frank Tedesco joins Khordmaster Keys this week to talk about his musical journey, livestreaming on Twitch, serenading unsuspecting people on Omegle with piano, and he also takes some time to talk about some tips and tricks (that I've never heard before) on how to be a better piano player. Frank Tedesco (b. 1992) is an American composer for games, film, and other media. His compositional style often focuses on melodically-driven themes and ideas, strong percussive elements, and rhythmic electronics. He cites a few of his top musical influences as Nobuo Uematsu, David Wise, Koji Kondo, and Hiroyuki Sawano. Frank is also a classically trained pianist and a YouTuber. Frank is a graduate from The Hartt School of Music, where he majored in Composition and gained experience composing for games, film, commercials, and chamber ensembles. A highlight during his time at Hartt was composing and performing a piano piece for the current President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame. It was at Hartt that Tedesco began his creative partnership with composer/pianist Zach Heyde. After creating a four-hand arrangement of "Sleigh Ride" for YouTube, the duo was hired part-time by Alfred Music Publishing and has completed 3 other arrangements for the company to date. Over the years Frank & Zach continued their collaborations, creating the sheet music webstore Stems Up Sound and founding Frank & Zach Piano Duets--a YouTube channel with over 325,000 subscribers.
