Reino Gevers is a seasoned pilgrim who has walked twelve different Camino pilgrimage routes in northwestern Spain. His journey began after hitting a wall in his over 20-year journalism career, prompting a complete reinvention of himself. His first book, "Walking on Edge," is a fictional narrative drawn from his personal experiences on the Camino. His latest non-fiction work, "Deep Walking – for Body, Mind, and Soul," captures crucial lessons from the Camino, distilled from interviews and conversations with hundreds of fellow pilgrims and he now reveals his new book The Turning of the Circle. Reino now dedicates much of his time to workshops, speaking tours, corporate health counseling, and mentoring leaders and achievers. Residing on the island of Majorca, he enjoys hiking, practicing martial arts, writing, and blogging in his free time. Reino believes it is our destiny as human beings to grow and become who we are truly meant to be. Life is not meant to be an easy ride. Trigger points such as divorce, the loss of a loved one, or financial ruin can elevate you to higher consciousness or leave you stagnating in melancholy. Our true calling often lies in the wounds of the past, sculpting us into the human beings we are destined to become. Reflecting on the past, it's clear how overcoming pain and obstacles equips us to fulfill our divine purpose. As an author and mentor, Reino aims to provide the tools that have helped him navigate life's challenges. Many of his insights came from long, solitary walks on the Camino de Santiago. In retrospect, those moments were among the most precious. The role of a mentor, he believes, is to guide, hold to account, and listen. If you feel a deep desire to grow, learn, and achieve financial independence, health, and strength, Reino may be able to assist you. His mentoring program focuses on finding soul purpose, building resilience, and mind-setting. Reino holds a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) from the University of South Africa and has been a trainer for leaders and achievers for the past ten years. He is the author of several books, including "Deep Walking for Body, Mind, and Soul," "Walking on Edge: A Pilgrimage to Santiago," and "Yield and Overcome: How Change Can Positively Impact Our Lives." Having experienced hitting the wall and finding the reset button to change his life's trajectory, Reino left South Africa at 23 to start a new life in Europe. He did it again ten years ago, leaving a well-paid job to start his own business from scratch. The brink of job burnout led him to his first Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, which changed his life. He has since walked the Camino twelve times and incorporates an annual pilgrimage into his life.

It can be hard enough to seek the counsel of a professional psychologist, let alone find one that can speak to your specific struggles with good and true theology. Grounded in Scripture, centered on Christ, distinguishing Law and Gospel, and living under a theology of the cross, Lutherans have a unique approach to Christian counseling. Guest Dr. Rick Marrs is a seminary professor and licensed psychologist who authored the book Making Christian Counseling More Christ Centered. In this episode, Dr. Marrs guides listeners through the initial hurdle of identifying a trusted Christian counselor and describes what makes counseling through the lens of Lutheran theology unique and particularly beneficial. Marrs also answers questions about the modern trend toward telehealth counseling and discusses the upsides and downfalls of this practice. Bio: Dr. Richard “Rick” Marrs is professor of Practical Theology at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. Marrs was called to the faculty in the fall of 2006. He previously served as the dean of faculty (2010–13), director of Continuing Education and Parish Services (2007–09) and director of the Master of Divinity (M.div.) and Residential Alternate Route (RAR) Programs (2013-21). His areas of interest and expertise include pastoral care and counseling, Christian counseling and Christian reconciliation. Before coming to the Seminary, he served at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Junction City, Kan. (2000–06), first as a vicar and then as a pastor. He was a professor of psychology and a counselor at St. John's College in Winfield, Kan. (1983–86; admissions counselor 1982–83), and at Concordia University Chicago, River Forest, Ill. (1986–98). He also has done counseling, clinical and consulting work with Lutheran Child and Family Services; the Baldwin Center for Psychological Services; the Center for Applied Psychology and Forensic Studies; the Kansas State University counseling center; Rapha (a Christian inpatient psychiatric group); Concordia University, Ann Arbor, Mich.; Lutheran Special Education Ministries; and various districts of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS). Marrs received certification for pastoral ministry through the Seminary's RAR Program and earned his Master of Divinity (M.Div.) both from Concordia Seminary (2001, 2008). He also holds an Associate of Arts (A.A.) from St. John's College (1978); a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) from Concordia College, River Forest, Ill. (now Concordia University Chicago) (1980); a Master of Science (M.S.) in counseling from the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kan. (1985); and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in counseling psychology from Loyola University Chicago in Chicago, Ill. (1994). He has been licensed as a psychologist since 1996. In 2019, Marrs published the book Making Christian Counseling More Christ Centered, which focuses on the relevance of Luther's soul-care theology in Christian counseling (WestBow Press). He continues and expands that discussion in a blog series on Concordia Theology. He and Seminary Emeritus Professor Dr. Robert Kolb also are co-authoring an article about Lutheran contributions to the theology of Christian psychology. Marrs contributed the new introduction to the reprint of Walter J. Koehler's book Counseling and Confession: The Role of Confession and Absolution in Pastoral Counseling (Concordia Publishing House, 1982, 2011). He has authored numerous Bible studies, articles and training programs for the LCMS. He also co-authored The Lesson Organizer Routine, a special education learning strategy trainer for the University of Kansas' Edge Enterprises, which has sold more than 20,000 copies. Marrs is married to Laura, who operates her own professional organizing business. They have two adult daughters, two sons-in-law and four grandchildren. Marrs coached the Seminary's varsity tennis team from 2007–16 and still enjoys playing tennis. He also competes nationally in stair-climb races. Matt welcomes Ironman World Champion swimmer and CEO and founder of Sailfish, a triathlon performance apparel company, Jan Sibbersen, for Part 2 of their discussion in which they focus on success in open water swimming. With more than 35 years of competitive swimming experience, Sibbersen shares his insights and best training practices for athletes both with a swimming background and without. In today's show, you'll learn three main things: The key differences between pool swimming, and open water swimming. (32:49) “I think we've all seen it - how good pool swimmers sometimes completely fail in open water. And it's because [...] it's an unfamiliar environment [...] So the best way to address that is to familiarize yourself with all these situations and train it." Technical and training considerations to prepare for an open water swim. (34:21) “You know, it only helps usually when you have somebody standing on the deck on the pool deck. You can do all the drills in the world, you can do all the technique work in the world. But if you don't get immediate feedback from someone who's watching you, it's really hard to improve it over time. Recommendations and tips on how to overcome anxiety in open water. (45:20) “Give it those extra one or two minutes that the masses are gone and just jump in last. [...] it's so much better and so much more enjoyable if you start slowly, and then you ease your way into it. [...] Don't worry about this minute or so that you lose, you lose a lot more if you get a panic attack” Additional topics include: Navigating race day - What to look out for in the water and what to keep in mind. Leverage your swim - Improving overall triathlon performance and conditioning through swimming. Expert advice - Troubleshooting your wetsuit. The goal of this episode is to broaden the understanding of open water swimming and how to prepare in order to put forward your best performance. Matt welcomes the founder of wetsuit company Sailfish, and Hawaii Ironman World Championship swim course record-holder, Jan Sibbersen, to the show. Part 1 of this 2 part series covers Sibbersen's road to conquering the Kona swim record in a comeback performance at the age of 43 and how his swimming background influenced his success in the water and inspired him to build a business from the ground up. With Sailfish, a company he started 15 years ago, now expanding into the U.S. market, Sibbersen takes us through the lessons he gleaned from a career in competitive sport and business, and how those lessons have influenced his leadership and his company's growth. Topics they discuss include: Sibbersen's foundation of swimming and his eventual transition to triathlons. The driving force and frame of mind behind the quest for a comeback and a shot at the Kona swim record. The parallels between entrepreneurs and triathletes and how to apply the lessons of one career to the other. (49:47) “if you're well prepared, and if you've done your homework, there's really not that much to worry about on race day…you know if you've put in the work if you've rested well, that there's a very, very good likelihood that you're going to have a great race. It's so similar to the world of business.” The brick-by-brick approach: the benefits and challenges of growing a business organically, without external capital. (42:05) “I liked the freedom of not having any investor's...being able to make my own decisions, and do the things that were right for the long-term growth of the company, and maybe not for short-term profitability.” Important traits to effective leadership and establishing strong team dynamics. (57:39) “You need to be able to steer the tempo or the speed of a team. So I think when there is quieter times…you need to let go” Managing and mitigating adversity and stress. (57:39) “I think growth pretty much only happens when there is a healthy amount of stress.” Strategizing growth and expansion into new territory. Tips for entrepreneurs and small business owners. Dr. Rhonda Goldman has known from a young age that she has always wanted to become a psychologist. Her mother was a psychologist, so she admits she “kind of had a little bit of a bird's eye view” of the field of psychology. Dr. Goldman is a professor in the Clinical Psychology Department at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology and a licensed Clinical Psychologist in Illinois. In this podcast, Dr. Goldman discusses why she chose York University in Toronto, ON, Canada for her undergraduate degree and why she stayed at York University for her master's and doctorate. She also reveals how exciting it was to work with Dr. Les Greenberg to further develop Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT). Dr. Goldman has taken her passion for EFT and applied it to couples and individuals. She and other colleagues formed the Emotion-Focused Therapy Institute (EFTI) which facilitates and fosters training and educational opportunities for psychologists and therapists interested in incorporating EFT into their professional practices or expanding the types of therapy they use in their own practice. Dr. Goldman also discusses other organizations that may serve as a home for people interested in Emotion-Focused Therapy and those wanting to integrate EFT or other types of therapy into their repertoire of skills. In particular, she discusses how she became a founding board member of the International Society for Emotion Focused Therapy (isEFT) and its purpose. Dr. Goldman was a past-president of the Society for the Exploration of Psychotherapy Integration (SEPI) and she discusses how this can serve as another resource or home for those who want to integrate other types of therapy into their practice. During my discussion with Dr. Goldman, she admits that she was lucky in many ways. She was lucky in that she knew while she was an undergraduate that she wanted to be a psychotherapist. Some people don't figure out what they want to do for a living, let alone knowing what major to declare in undergraduate or graduate school. She was also lucky to have found an exciting place to study, receive good mentorship, and an exciting field of study at York University. She also mentioned that she was lucky because she graduated with her PhD with little to no debt. She said that she would hear stories of people graduating and “paying back debt for years and years” and said that wasn't her experience as there are many opportunities and agencies to help fund your education in Canada. When asked if there was anything she wished she had known about psychology ahead of time before choosing her career path, Dr. Goldman said she wished she had known that psychology “is so diverse” and that “there's so much you can do with a degree, especially in clinical psychology.” She then proceeded to list some of the things you can do including applied psychology, therapy, research, and neuropsychology. She states “I wish I knew how much there was to offer, I mean, and I think that's why you have what you're doing [the Master's in Psychology Podcast and website] is trying to help people sort through all that psychology has and try to find their track within it, right? And so, I think that's really great, because people need some guidance, I think along those line because there is so much out there.” Connect with Dr. Rhonda Goldman: Faculty Page | WebsiteConnect with the Show: Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn https://vimeo.com/682933285 Interests and Specializations Dr. Rhonda Goldman focuses on Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples and individuals. Dr. Erin Haugen grew up on a farm in rural North Dakota. On the advice of her mom, she decided to stay close to home and “try a semester or two” at UND. What started out as a couple of semesters ended up being a number of years as she received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, ND. Although she attended undergraduate school with the intention of becoming a psychiatrist, in this podcast, she admits that she didn't know what a psychologist was until one of her professors pulled her aside and said “Erin, I actually think you want to be a psychologist instead of a psychiatrist.” At that point, she took a different route and combined her passion for athletics and understanding people and began working with athletes. She soon became very aware of the performance piece that is present for many athletes and this opened the door for her to do more research and eventually jump into the discipline of sport psychology. Dr. Haugen is a licensed clinical psychologist and sport psychologist in Grand Forks, ND. In fact, she is the only sport psychologist in the state of North Dakota who is a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC). In this podcast, Dr. Haugen reflects on her academic and professional journey and gives us a glimpse into how it feels to work with athletes from over 20 different sports ranging from recreational to elite (Olympic and professional). Throughout our discussion, she provides advice for those interested in psychology and also offers specific advice to those interested in the field of sport psychology. Dr. Haugen literally travelled coast to coast to gain experience and education in the field of psychology. She provides insight into why she selected the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks for her doctorate in clinical psychology. Dr. Haugen travelled to Connecticut to complete her pre-doctoral internship at River Valley Services/Connecticut Valley Hospital in Middletown. She completed her post-doctoral residency at the University of California, Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, CA. She then returned home because she had the opportunity to work at the Assessment and Therapy Associates of Grand Forks (ATAGF) and has been working there ever since she received her license. She is not only a clinician, she is also the Director of Continuing Education and Training at ATAGF. During our discussion, Dr. Haugen talks about psychological flexibility and states that it is “an evidence-based principle and it really describes everything that I'm doing all day with athletes.” She proudly describes herself as a “nerdy kid at heart” and has always been interested in people and why they do what they do. I would say she is an “athletic nerd” because she has always been involved in athletics including anything from basketball to track to now focusing on triathlons (with the help of her border collie mix rescue dogs). I also learned that Dr. Haugen swore that she would never be in a relationship with another psychologist yet, here she is, happily married to a psychologist who specializes in couples and relationship work. You can listen to the podcast to find out what kind of fancy psychological terms they use when they argue. When Dr. Malissa Clark graduated from The University of Michigan with her B.A. in Organizational Studies, she wasn't planning on attending graduate school, let alone knowing that she would eventually end up in the growing field of Industrial/Organizational (I/O) Psychology. In this podcast interview, Dr. Clark shares her unique academic and career journey while offering tips and suggestions to students who want to increase their chances of getting accepted into a graduate school or program in the field of psychology. She also discusses the Work and Family Experience Research (WAFER) Lab and how she ended up at the University of Georgia as an Associate Professor of I/O Psychology. Dr. Clark recalls working “a lot of different jobs growing up and some of them were kind of crazy sales jobs.” She sold knives in high school and sold books door to door in college. Upon graduating, she worked in sales for a couple of years before realizing that she wasn't happy with her career choice. To help figure out what she should do, she thought back to the classes that she really liked and what kept coming to mind for her was an Organizational Psychology class taught by Dr. Fiona Lee. After looking her up and looking into the field further, she realized that there were graduate programs in I/O Psychology and decided to go back to school. She applied to many graduate schools and when she received some offers, she was surprised to find out that they were going to pay her to be a graduate student. Even during her graduate career, Dr. Clark never thought that she would be a professor. She kept thinking that she would do something in business or some sort of consulting work. During our discussion, she reminisces about her graduate experiences and how she realized that she “really loved this research stuff” and began thinking that she would like a career in academics. Dr. Clark admits that she loves the flexibility of being a researcher and professor within the field of psychology. She states, “I love the fact that I get to engage in research, and I get paid for it.” She feels like she is always a student and always learning and absorbing new information from her research and her students. Later in the podcast, Dr. Clark discusses her experiences serving as Chair of the APA Division 14 Program (Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology [SIOP]) 2020-2021 and what areas of research she enjoys most. When asked if she had the time and money to complete one project or go on one trip, what would she do? She is into travel hacking and she would love to travel the world. Connect with Dr. Malissa A. Dr. Gerald Drose was born and raised in Charleston, SC in a tight-knit family. His father coached him in sports throughout his life and his mother worked as a playground director. Though he had a very active and playful childhood, he recalls that he was a little lost in his early adulthood. In this podcast interview, he explains how he found himself in a graduate program in clinical psychology and how his experiences inspired him to write his first novel “Bird Gotta Land: The Education of a Young Psychologist” which is loosely based on his time in graduate school. As a licensed psychologist with over 32 years of experience, Dr. Drose offers advice to those interested in the field of psychology and to those who want to start their own practice. He met his wife, Dina Zeckhausen, in grad school and explains why they founded Powers Ferry Psychological Associates. He discusses how they have grown from one location with 3 therapists to 4 locations with over 30 clinicians mainly through hard work, organic growth, and by providing a variety of assessment, psychotherapy, and special services. Dr. Drose highlights the importance of being fully present and alive in all of your life experiences and with clients. He states “…so you know psychotherapy is about landing, or becoming mindful…” and “…when you kind of feel like you understand, even if it's a myth that you understand but you tell yourself you understand, you become mindful, you become more centered.” He also reminds us that there is an incredible need for psychotherapy and that this need “has grown exponentially” in recent years. Therefore, if you are interested in the field of psychology, get started now to help meet the need for more psychotherapists. Though Dr. Drose shares parts of his personal and professional journey to becoming a practicing psychologist in this podcast, we learn more about his experiences in his book through powerful and complex character development. We learn about the protagonist, Stephen, a graduate student in clinical psychology as well as the story lines surrounding his father, his young son, and his budding relationship with his girlfriend. The reader also gets drawn in to learn about his professors, classmates, and landlords. As an added bonus, we learn more about the game of softball and the color of his Karmann Ghia convertible. Those embarking on a graduate degree in psychology, going through psychotherapy, or simply on their own journey of self-awareness and personal growth will benefit from reading “Bird Gotta Land.” Connect with Dr. Gerald Drose: Facebook | LinkedIn | Twitter | WebsiteConnect with the Show: Facebook | LinkedIn | Twitter https://vimeo.com/637141210 Interests and Specializations Dr. Gerald S. It appears that an early motivation for the intended confusion was to hide the connection to the obvious Japanese martial art influence that the Koreans had. Since the Japanese Empire had gone to extreme measures to subjugate Korea during their long-term occupation, after the occupation national efforts were made to reinvigorate Korean pride, at the same time when Taekwon-Do was being initially developed. This movement impacted the early telling of Taekwon-Do's history. Competing personalities and rival factions eventually split Taekwon-Do into two major groups. Once this happened additional pressures bore down upon the telling of Taekwon-Do's history, corrupting it even more. Eventually major political interference also impacted the truth of the history when General Choi Hong-Hi ran afoul with the south Korean dictatorships when he became a leading outspoken critic of the military regimes. Once General Choi fled Korea for his safety a concentrated campaign was undertaken to destroy him and his ITF, by enticing and even forcing his members to join the new WTF. As the WTF became more successful and grew into the premier Taekwondo organization, General Choi's ITF was weak and close to ending. As a result he looked to introduce Taekwon-Do to north Korea. General Choi had always envisioned spreading his Taekwon-Do without regard to race, religion, political ideology or national boundaries. He even dreamed of bringing it someday to the north, as a means of helping his beloved Homeland reunite. General Choi named his final Pattern Tong-Il, which denotes the long sought after reunification. Once General Choi visited the north, which was illegal in south Korea, he was labeled a communist traitor who committed a treasonous act by engaging in what was viewed by some as anti-nationalist activity. There always seems to be pressures that look to shape the telling of history. However, history is factual information that should inform us who did what, where and when. Dr. Vitale looks to draw upon his wide range of police training and investigative skills and combine that with his extensive academic education to uncover factual data and illicit information from many of the people who were there at various points along the development of Taekwon-Do.TKD.Research@yahoo.com

Episode 8 - Talking Energy Show - Mike Cantrell - Author | Speaker | Oil and Energy Consultant | Owner of Pivotal Strategic Solutions Pivotal Strategic Solutions(405) 206-4444 mike@mikecantrell.net Government affairs consultantRegulatory compliance consultantPublic affairs consultantStrategy consultant Mike is an entrepreneur / consultant with demonstrated history of accomplishment in the oil & energy industry as well as the Political and Public Affairs space. Skilled in coalition building, solving difficult problems, and building oil and gas companies, Mike is a strong entrepreneurial professional with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) focused in Psychology from East Central University. A 40 year industry veteran, Mike sees the oil and gas industry, at least in the conventional vertical well space, as offering the greatest return on investment in the American economy. Michael (Mike) Cantrell was born and raised in Oklahoma, where his family has strong ties to the oilfield. Cantrell's grandfather was a driller in the 1920's, eventually starting his own business in the 1950's, which Cantrell's father joined a few years later. In 1968, his father shifted into the production side of the business, where Cantrell gained hands-on experience in the field, accompanying his father in business from an early age. Cantrell attended East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma and graduated in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. While Cantrell was, and still is, keenly interested in psychology, he wanted a career in which he could work for himself and decided to continue on the family legacy in the petroleum industry. In 1975, Cantrell started Oklahoma Basic Economy Corporation, an Ada, Oklahoma based oil and gas exploration and production company specializing in enhancing production in more mature formations, serving as President until 2000. That year, Cantrell sold Oklahoma Basic Economy Corporation and a few months later, founded Cantrell Investments LLC, an oil and gas investment company, with assets primarily in Oklahoma., Texas and Kansas. Around that time, Cantrell decided to leave his longtime home in Oklahoma and relocated to Plano, Texas, just outside Dallas. A few short years later, in 2006, he moved back to Oklahoma. In 2009, Cantrell accepted a consulting position with Continental Resources, where he was an integral part of building the company's Government Relations Division, eventually serving as Vice President of Governmental and Regulatory Affairs. While at Continental, Cantrell maintained his oil and gas interests and upon leaving the company in March 2013, shifted his focus back to Cantrell Investments. As a longtime veteran, Cantrell notes that this industry is "an exciting place to work," crediting his dedicated employees - many of whom have been with him for years, if not decades - for their team's overall success. He also points out that it is an added benefit to have assets performing for you, and in turn generating profit, even while you sleep! Even though he has no shortage to choose from, Cantrell easily considers his greatest accomplishment to be raising two motivated children - both successful in their chosen fields - who he claims are even smarter than their dad. In fact, both his children have taken a page from their father's book in some way - his daughter is a political consultant and his son a fourth generation oilman. And though each have their own, independent companies, Cantrell has also worked closely over the years on joint ventures and projects with both his father and brother. In his free time, you will most likely find Cantrell on his Harley Davidson, whether he's traveling to the corners of the United States or just taking a quick ride. Cantrell is also very active in industry organizations, and serves on the Board of Directors of: Oklahoma Independent Petroleum Association, The Domestic Energy Producers Alliance, The Council for a Secure America, Citizens Bank of Ada, and is the Vice Chairman of Oklahomans for Lawsuit Reform. Additionally, Cantrell is the Chairman of the National Stripper Well Association, and is a longtime member of the Board of Directors for the Texas Alliance of Energy Producers. Cantrell adds that he has sincerely enjoyed working with the Alliance, saying, "I have never felt as effective in Washington D.C. as I did when accompanying Alliance leadership" to the U.S. Capitol earlier this year. In this podcast interview, Dr. Doug McDonald provides insight into why he stayed at the University of South Dakota for most of his academic career then explains how, and why, he selected clinical psychology as his field of study. He then shares how luck and hard work enabled him to serve as past regional president of the APA's Division 45 and end up at the University of North Dakota, where he has been for almost 29 years. Dr. McDonald is currently a Professor in the Department of Psychology at UND and Director of the Indians into Psychology Doctoral Education (INPSYDE) program which falls under the Indian Health Service (IHS) American Indians Into Psychology (INPSYC) program. UND has produced more Native American/First Nations Ph.D. clinical psychologists than any other APA-accredited program. Dr. McDonald provides insightful advice to anyone interested in entering the psychology field then, later in the interview, he shares specific advice for Native Americans interested in a career in psychology. UND offers a Master of Arts or a Master of Science in Forensic Psychology. The department also offers two doctorate programs including one in Clinical Psychology (which is fully accredited by the APA) and another in General-Experimental Psychology. You can find additional information on each of those UND psychology graduate programs on our North Dakota page. Dr. McDonald has been involved in the INPSYC program for a long time. In fact, he was founder of the national Indians Into Psychology curriculum that was written into the federal Indian Health Care Improvement Act. UND is one of three Universities who are Grantees (2019-2023) of the American Indians Into Psychology (INPSYC) Program…the other two are Oklahoma State University and the University of Montana. There are only about 150-250 Native psychologists nationwide. Given that there are almost 2.2 million American Indians and Alaska Natives eligible for health care from IHS, this group is vastly underrepresented in psychology. Dr. McDonald shares his thoughts on how to increase the number of Native psychologists in the field and in Native American communities. He also discusses many useful resources and scholarships available to American Indians and other First Nations. I enjoyed talking with Doug because his passion for helping all students interested in furthering their academic careers in psychology is palpable and evident in this interview as is his devotion to his Native American heritage as a member of the Oglala Lakota Sioux tribe in South Dakota. I found him easy to talk to, relatable, and knowledgeable. Moreover, he truly is an advocate for increasing the ethnic minority presence in the field of psychology. When you talk with him about these topics, you are drawn into his cause and can't help but wonder, “how can I help?” tokṡa Connect with Dr. Doug McDonald: LinkedIn | UND Faculty Page | WebsiteConnect with the Show: Facebook | LinkedIn | Twitter https://vimeo.com/507971435 Interests and Specializations Dr. McDonald is interested in clinical psychology, Native American assessment and treatment issues, and further developing and growing the Indians Into Psychology Doctoral Education (INPSYDE) program at the University of North Dakota. In this podcast interview, Dr. Heather Lench explains why she selected two graduate schools in the state of California for her master's and doctorate degrees in psychology. While most of the reasons relate to the school, program, and scholars in her field of interest, she eventually reveals another reason for staying in “The Golden State.” She also provides insight into how she selected her areas of interest while attending her undergraduate and graduate schools. She attended Florida State University (FSU) as an undergraduate where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. She then attended California State University, Fresno (CSUF) where she received her Master of Arts in Experimental Psychology and Marriage and Family Therapy. Dr. Lench then attended the University of California, Irvine (UCI) where she received her Doctor of Philosophy in Social Psychology. Dr. Lench shares how she ended up at Texas A&M University (TAMU) and how she grew through the ranks to become Professor and Department Head of the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences. TAMU offers an M.S. Program in Psychology with a concentration in Industrial/Organizational (I/O) Psychology. TAMU also offers a Doctoral Program in Psychology with training in five areas of including Behavioral and Cellular Neuroscience, Clinical Psychology, Cognition and Cognitive Neuroscience, I/O Psychology, Social and Personality Psychology. In addition to being an accomplished teacher, mentor, and scholar, Dr. Lench is also the Director of, and Principle Investigator for, the Emotion Science Lab which conducts research based on the premise that emotions and “emotional processes are the foundation of cognition and behavior.” She and the Emotion Science Lab research team are currently investigating boredom and comparing those who respond positively to boredom with those who respond negatively in hopes of developing an intervention and techniques to help those who respond less effectively. I found Dr. Lench refreshing, insightful, and full of helpful advice. She is focused on helping students interested in the field of psychology as she includes undergraduate and graduate students on her Emotion Science Lab Research Team. The Lab includes a student resources page to help those interested in finding general information and other resources related to psychology. The student resources page also includes resources to help those applying to graduate schools. Connect with Dr. Heather Lench: LinkedIn Connect with the Show: Facebook | LinkedIn | Twitter https://vimeo.com/502475692 Interests and Specializations Dr. Lench is interested in learning how emotional processes impact behavior and thought. In particular, she assumes that emotions and emotional processes play an important role in the development of behavior and thought. As the principle investigator of the Emotion Science Lab, she and other researchers examine how and why affective responses and emotions impact people's judgments and future behavior. They also study specific emotions and how they influence behavior and cognition. Much of her work would fall under the emerging field of affective science which takes a multidisciplinary approach bridging psychology, judgement and decision-making, and affective neuroscience using a variety of approaches and methods. Just like many adults, they are struggling with anxiety, depression, and anger caused by the isolation of the pandemic. In this podcast interview, Dr. Tess Neal provides an overview of her academic journey since completing her B.A. at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln through her Ph.D. program at the University of Alabama to her current position as Assistant Professor of Psychology in Arizona State University's School of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Neal is a licensed psychologist, and she reveals the choices she made when selecting a master's and doctorate school and program while providing copious advice for those interested in seeking graduate degrees in psychology. Dr. Neal graduated with her Ph.D. in clinical psychology and has always had an interest in law and forensic psychology. Much of her early work focused on expert bias in the legal system, credibility, and juror perceptions. As a result of her persistence and dedication, she has become an award-winning teacher, scholar, and mentor. Dr. Neal was named a “Rising Star” by the Association for Psychological Science (APS) for her early career research on judgment, decision-making, and expert bias. The APS “Rising Star” designation is given to those whose innovative research has “already advanced the field and signals great potential for their continued contributions.” Recently, Dr. Neal was recognized for her long-standing commitment as a mentor as she received the ASU Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award (Outstanding Master's Mentor). As the Director of ASU's Clinical and Legal Judgment Lab, Dr. Neal works with students and other scholars to examine how human judgment intersects with psychology, law, and other sciences to better understand how people make decisions. From studying how to keep “junk science” out of the courtroom to studying the biases of forensic experts, Dr. Neal hopes her interdisciplinary research blending psychology, law, and ethics continues to improve the criminal justice system. She plans to continue studying the judgments, perceptions, and misperceptions of psychologists and other experts in the legal system as these have meaningful impacts on the real world. Welcome to The Shaun Tabatt Show! Today my special guest is Daniel R. Hyde and we'll be talking about his book A Well-Ordered Church: Laying a Foundation for a Vibrant Church (EP Books, 2015). About The Book: "Jesus is my personal Lord and Savior." No phrase captures better the ethos of modern evangelical Christianity. And while this is absolutely necessary for a Christian to believe and profess, what typically gets lost in much evangelical thinking and acting is Jesus' church. This book seeks to present to evangelical Christians the basics of ecclesiology, or, the biblical doctrine of the church. The authors say in these pages, “This is a church, in the most basic and fundamental of ways. No matter what view of church government you may hold, the goal is to draw you back to the big principles of Scripture to help you understand the church s identity, authority, ecumenicity, and activity.” About The Author: Rev. Daniel R. Hyde--"Pastor Danny" to the members of Oceanside United Reformed Church--has an eclectic past: he was baptized Roman Catholic, was converted in a Foursquare church, attended an Assemblies of God college where he flirted spiritually with Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism before he discovered the riches of the historic Protestant and Reformed Christian faith. All of this prepared him to minister in the diverse religious culture of Southern California. In 2000, while still in seminary, Danny planted the Oceanside United Reformed Church (United Reformed Churches in North America) in Carlsbad/Oceanside, California. Fifteen years on later he continues as pastor and is married with four children. He and his wife enjoy showing hospitality in their home for meals, prayer, and to study the Word. Pastor Danny has a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) from Vanguard University, Master of Divinity (M.Div.) from Westminster Seminary California, and a Master of Theology (Th.M.) from Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary. His Th.M. thesis was entitled, "Of Great Importance and of High Concernment: The Liturgical Theology of John Owen (1616-1683)," and was read by Drs. Joel Beeke, Derek W. H. Thomas, and Mark Jones. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. For additional show notes, visit ShaunTabatt.com/013.
