The Toby Gribben Show

D:Ream is a Northern Irish/English pop rock and dance group. They had a UK No. 1 hit with "Things Can Only Get Better" in 1994. Eight more top 40 hits followed, including "U R the Best Thing" and "Shoot Me with Your Love". They released three albums, two of which reached the UK top five. The group had an all-male line-up which varied in number, but mainly centred on lead singer Peter Cunnah. The live band included keyboard player Brian Cox, who is now a renowned physicist and television presenter; although Cunnah, as the only official member, normally played keyboards (along with all other instruments) on studio recordings.D:Ream first came to prominence with the euphoric single "U R the Best Thing" in the summer of 1992, an anthemic piano-house tune which did not chart but thanks to a Sasha remix was Pete Tong's Essential Tune of 1992. "Things Can Only Get Better", released in the spring of 1993, gave the group their first chart success. "U R The Best Thing" was eventually re-released in April 1993 and gave the group their second chart hit. The band were nominated for Best Dance act in the MTV Europe music awards in 1994 and for Best Single in the Brit Awards in 1995.The band's first album, D:Ream on Volume 1, which was promoted for almost two years, produced seven singles ("Star" and "I Like It" came on a joint release as a double A-side). It was the track "Things Can Only Get Better" that gave them UK success and international fame. After they supported Take That on their tour, "Things Can Only Get Better" topped the UK Singles Chart, in early 1994. Originally released in early 1993, when the track reached No. 24 in the UK, it was later adopted by the Labour Party as their theme for the 1997 UK General Election, and consequently released for the third time; this time reaching No. 19 on the UK chart.Between 1992 and 1997, the band released two studio albums, (D:Ream on Volume 1 and World), ten different singles (two of which were released three times), and an official greatest hits album, (The Best of D:Ream). The group's record label released their first compilation, The Best of D:Ream, in 1997 instead of their third studio album, which remains unreleased. In 2006, a second collection was released, for The Platinum Collection series. When D:Ream broke through into the charts, the band's main touring line-up consisted of core member Peter Cunnah (vocalist, songwriter), Al Mackenzie (musician), and Cian McCarthy. Other main performers included physicist Brian Cox who played keyboards for several years while working towards his physics PhD before being replaced by Richard Garbutt, Derek Chai on bass, and drummer Mark Roberts. The group also used a number of guest vocalists – such as T.J. Davis, who is featured as co-lead vocalist on "The Power (Of All the Love in the World)", one of the singles taken from their second album, as well as providing backing vocals on many other songs. As if 2021 wasn't already on our "worst years ever" list, it dealt us another blow on its way out. Betty White died today. She was 99, less than three weeks shy of 100. Makes you hate this year even more. And then you realize that the next year is 2020 too. (2022... we just can't escape it!) I generally like this day. It's even my wedding anniversary! David and I got married six years ago tonight. Mostly we'll be celebrating that, certainly not the year (or 5) just past... And I'm sad that I don't hold out much hope that things will be better in 2020 too either. Though a girl can hope. Today, the phone lines are open for anything you'd like to share... thoughts on the year(s) gone by, Betty White, resolutions or lack thereof... Or maybe you've spotted the missing in action so-called governor of Florida, the man I call MoRon DeathSentence. The worst COVID outbreak yet, and he's not been seen in public in over two weeks. At some point in the hour, Harvey J. Kaye will pop in to review the stupidities of 2021 and project the imperatives of 2022. And I certainly won't forget. But if you somehow miss this part, I will thank you for listening and supporting this program. Without you, I couldn't do this every day. Perhaps I'll end with a quote from Howard Jones. They had a UK No. 1 hit with "Things Can Only Get Better" in 1994 as well as eight more top 40 hits.[1] They released three albums, two of which reached the UK top five.[1] The group had an all-male line-up which varied in number, but mainly centred on lead singer Peter Cunnah. Continuing the all male vocal sets comes Men 15. The past editions of Men have related to Mardi Gras Men which have been a mixture of gay and straight male vocalists. For this first edition of Pride Men, I wanted to feature only male artists who identify as gay or non binary. I wanted this set to be Pride personified for gay men but still be accessible to all lovers of great male club anthems. Artists such as Matt Zarley, Jason Walker, Tony Moran, Brian Justin Crum and Steve Grand from the USA mix it up with Sam Smith, Will Young, Peyton, Calum Scott and D:Ream from the UK. Australia's Troye Sivan and Bulgaria's Kristian Kostov round out the artists featured here. Remixes come from 7th Heaven, Dave Aude`, Barry Harris, Russ Rich & LFB, Toy Armada & DJ GRIND, The Alias and Dirty Disco. You may ask yourself what the difference is between the two so I'm here to set you straight (no pun intended). Tea Dance used to begin as a brunch party with mimosas and later evolved into a late afternoon Sunday party that went on into the early evening so gay men could get their disco on and still be in bed early enough for work the next morning. Over the years, the tradition had pretty much faded but is still in place in various metropolitan areas around the country. The past few years have brought out more vocal disco house tracks typically associated with these weekly events as opposed to the big room tribal house you normally expect. Because music has evolved, you can still throw in some modern future house tracks that have a younger gay appeal and still keep your audience. A good example from this set is the AWESOME Matt Consola, Aaron Altemose and Brenda Reed collaboration on "Every Moment." Every thing about this track screams GAY. For this set I closed it out with the house-friendly remix by Larry Peace but the Russ Rich and Andy Allder club mix is equally fantastic as a future house track that maintains all the uplifting elements that make this song so fabulous. Peyton's fantastic "Things Can Only Get Better" is another fine example of this balance as well though I went with the Eric Kupper remix since that's who jumpstarted Peyton's career. [youtube v="jUBS6YnPraY"] I had raved about the output from Nacho Chapado and Ivan Gomez in my last post and there's another area these guys have been targeting with their Disco Gurls moniker, which are club-friendly samples of classic tracks or reimaginations from whole cloth for today's dancefloors. They've taken a very similar track that Almighty has done with their own hi energy remixes and are hitting it out of the ballpark. Only because Party Favorz understands our audience that I'm confident this set is gonna be massively popular and you can look forward to future releases under this sub-genre. While it can appeal to anyone who enjoys Disco House, it's targeted predominantly at gay men so I'll keep it listed under the Circuit & Anthems genre possibly creating a subgenre for y'all so everything is collected in one easy to locate spot. In the interim, Party Favorz isn't finished delivering the December party sets. In fact, there are a ton of goodies and stocking stuffers Santa has lined up for the remaining 20 days of Christmas. Until the next time...ENJOY! Anyone interested in a brief history of the Tea Dance —  "The Very Gay and Interesting History of the Almost Lost Tradition of the Sunday Tea Dance" is an excellent read. Peter Cunnah spent his pop star years living in London but the Derry-born star was eventually drawn back to the North West of Ireland last year. In our final episode of this series, he chats about childhood memories, how nature has been inspiring his new music and how he really felt about Labour hijacking his hit record. Steve Cooper talks with musician Howard Jones. Howard was one of the defining figures of mid-'80s synth pop. His music merged the technology-intensive sound of new wave with the cheery optimism of hippies and late-'60s pop. He racked up a string of hits in the mid- and late '80s before he retreated into being a cult figure in the '90s.  He released his first single, New Song, in England in the fall of 1983 and it became a big hit, peaking at number three. His second single, What Is Love, was released a few months later and it reached number two and his debut album was released in the spring of 1984 and quickly rose to number one in England. In 1985 he released Dream Into Action. The record became his most successful, reaching number ten and going platinum in the U.S. spawning the hit singles Things Can Only Get Better, Like to Get to Know You Well, Life in One Day and Look Mama. In the spring of 1986, he released Action Replay an EP of remixes that featured a new version of No One Is to Blame which became his biggest U.S. hit, peaking at number four. In 1989 his single Everlasting Love became a number one adult contemporary hit in America, reaching number 13 pop. Since then he has continued to release new music and constantly tours, whether it be his solo show or as part of the Retro Futura Tour.

Howard Jones, Keyboardist Extraordinaire Interview Howard Jones is currently touring and will be in Leesburg, VA Nov 28, at the Tally Ho Theater. Tickets and information HERE. We caught up with Howard recently and talked ELP, his gear, his music and what's next for the pioneer keyboard artist. It was in 1983 that Howard Jones released his first single "New Song" in the UK. The expectation was that it might sell a few thousand copies and introduce his fresh new music to an unsuspecting world. The reality was quite different. The single steadily  climbed the UK chart to peak at No. 3. Then came the second single "What Is Love?" which reached No. 2, and then Things Can Only Get Better", and the classic "No One Is To Blame", which reached No. 1 in the U.S. singles chart.   Howard Jones, of course, is well-known for these and a series of colossal hit albums and 15 top-40 hit singles throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s. The British musician's work also played a pioneering role in the introduction and acceptance of synthesizers and sequencers in pop and rock recordings and performances. It would be easy for Jones to rest on his laurels and rely solely on performing his hits. However, that's simply not an option for him.  Still active, still engaged, highly creative, Howard Jones will be in Leesburg, VA Nov 28, at the Tally Ho Theater.

Thank you to everyone who has downloaded and listened to the show, and the rally fans, from all over the world, who emailed me to share their enthusiasm for rallying and motorsport in general. It's been great fun producing the show over the last two years. Bruce. The last WRC event of 2007 and Marcus Gronholm's 150th and final event.Marcus didn't get the fairy-tale ending he'd hoped for. A strong second place behind team-mate Mikko Hirvonen was the best he could muster, while Sebastien Loeb hung on for third place, good enough to claim the 2007 drivers title.Rally Wales really threw the conditions at the crews, the rain and mud made even more difficult by stages run in darkness. And after an off late on day one, Jari-Matti Latvala showed just what he could do by winning the bulk of the stages on the final two days. There's a new generation of drivers waiting to take centre-stage, but 2007 will go down as one of the classic years in WRC history.
