Bill Northey, the former Iowa agriculture secretary and USDA leader, passed away in early February, leaving behind a legacy of farm policy leadership and influence on conservation agriculture. In this episode, brought to you by Yetter Farm Equipment, we're sharing Northey's keynote presentation from the 2015 National Strip-Tillage Conference about applying science and technology to improve conservation tillage practices.
Craig Northey, lead singer of Odds, joined Gregg Tilston and Karim Kanji on the show earlier this year. Canadian rock band Odds released their seventh studio album, "Crash the Time Machine," co-produced by Steven Page earlier this year. The album explores themes of struggle and community, showcasing the band's evolution into new musical directions while maintaining their dark ironic signature. The first track, "Staring at a Blank Page," is described as defiantly joyful, offering a perspective on overcoming immovable obstacles by altering one's own outlook. Singer and guitarist Craig Northey emphasizes the significance of friendship as a form of immortality, acknowledging the collaborative influence of friends, including the late John Mann of Spirit of the West, on the album. The band, consisting of Northey, bassist Doug Elliott, drummer Pat Steward, and guitarist Murray Atkinson, reflects on their musical journey, rooted in the present but informed by a rich past dating back to their founding in 1987. Odds gained recognition with their 1991 debut, "Neopolitan," and continued to achieve success with Gold-selling releases like "Bedbugs" in 1993 and Platinum-selling "Good Weird Feeling" in 1995. After a hiatus in 1999, they regrouped in 2007 to embark on the second chapter of their recording career with the release of "Cheerleader" in 2008.

What story will we tell when we are dead? “There's all sorts of scenarios of death that can be embarrassing. […] It's just very private and very intimate and they're forced into almost having to expose themselves to someone.” In short, we talk about this in the episode: What made Kari decide to become a mortician and what is it like to be in this job? How is caring for the living often more challenging than working with the dead? What questions about the dead is Kari being asked most? How does Kari handle the tension between living her life and expecting a distressed caller any minute? What did more than 25 years of caring for the dead teach her about living? With more words: Upon entering adult life, most of us focus on being full of choices, full of life, and making the most out of it. If we are lucky, getting older, sicker, and eventually dying is not on our to-think-about list at this age. So how come some young people choose to enter a profession that places death at the center of attention? What is it like dealing with loved ones in crisis, grieving and lost, all the time? And what happens to a body once handed over to the care of a funeral home? Kari Northey, single mom and mortician from Michigan, USA, has answers. Even though we generally like to push the thought of death away, we have so many questions and hope that if only we knew more about what's coming it would make us better prepared and feel more in control, when a loved one dies or when we are confronted with our own looming deaths. On her YouTube channel “Kari the Mortician”, it is Kari's mission to make the processes of a funeral home transparent, tangible, and less frightening. Whether it is embalming, cremating, or talking financials, Kari answers the questions of her audience – and does so with lightness and charisma.Resources mentioned in this episode: Kari's interview with "Hospice Nurse Julie": you can watch it on Kari's YouTube channel A tour of a crematory Kari captured for her channel A tour of an embalming room in which Kari explains the use of items like a "head block" "My Girl" - the movie in which a girl grows up in a house that also holds her father's funeral home in the basement Do you want to connect with Kari? Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays All From 1974 to 1979 I was lucky enough to host Great Canadian Goldrush on CBC Radio National. Every Christmas we had a Christmas Jam – in the studio. Produced by Susan Englebert. (with assistance from Claire Lawrence) Except for the mixed drinks, it was nothing fancy but it was an hour of heart-felt stories and songs. The artists included Roy Forbes and Shari Ulrich. When Goldrush left the air Christmas Jam disappeared UNTIL Roundhouse Radio in Vancouver came on air and again I had a studio to capture this magic. I talked to Shari, Roy, and Barney Bentall and they all signed on for a reconnect. We got 3 years of Christmas in the Round recorded and then Roundhouse went dark. Keeping the tradition alive, this year we present Year 3 of Christmas in the Round (2017) The Lineup includes Jim Byrnes Shari Ulrich Barney Bentall Bill Henderson (Chilliwack) Craig Northey (Odds and Steven Page Trio) On percussion Geoff Hicks (Colin James, Barney, Cuddy, Byrnes, Northey etc) Rob Becker (guitar/vocals) Kirby Barber (guitar/vocals) Roy Forbes was unavailable in Year 3 BUT I found him hiding in Year One He brings with him two songs and the slide guitar of Shaun Verreault from Wide Mouth Mason. And yes..he does tell the story and rolls out his Christmas Classic Mince Meat Tart
The Christmas season is a time of giving, generosity and coming together as a community, no matter where you live. But there's something going on in the tiny little community of Bashaw that is unusual and almost inexplicably magical, and it is literally transforming lives. You could look at the Sugar Plum Ball event, or the Angels Among Us campaign, you could study the impacts of the Bashaw Food Bank and the annual Christmas hampers, or the Bashaw United Church's new care packages for seniors that are being distributed around town right now. It wouldn't matter which community program or event you examined, you'd find that behind every single one of them there has been a cultural paradigm shift in Bashaw in recent years that has magnified the impact and effectiveness of everything that we do to support those in need, and has fundamentally changed the way we create community. If you want to know what the secret is, you'd be hard pressed to find a better person in town to share it with you than Jackie Northey. Thanks for listening, and Merry Christmas!

Our stories hold so much power – both what we tell ourselves and what we can begin to believe about ourselves. This week's guest, Dr. Wesley Northey, shares his story spanning the full range of the human experience, and how he found purpose at his lowest point by exploring possibility. Exchange Quotes: “Life is a gift and it offers us the privilege, opportunity, and responsibility to give something back by becoming more.” – Tony Robbins “A shoutout to everyone who is trying right now…trying to do the right thing, trying to stay open, trying to keep going, trying to hold on, trying to let go, trying to find their flow, trying to stay afloat, trying to meet each new day, trying to find their balance, trying to love themselves, trying new things and new ways…I see you. I'm there too. We're in this together.” – S.C.Lourie Exchange Links: Wesley's website @wesleynorthey on Social Media Epic Exchanges on Facebook @epicexchanges on Instagram

This week's Open Mic Guest is USDA Undersecretary for Farm Production and Conservation Bill Northey. Nearing the end of his tenure as the first FPAC leader, Northey suggests the majority of work on implementing the 2018 farm bill is done as well the heavy lifting for the first two rounds of the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program funding for a diverse group of farmers and ranchers across the nation. Ahead, Northey believes Congress should consider some mechanism for ad hoc assistance to be administered through USDA's Commodity Credit Corps. without additional legislative action. Northey believes CCC limits should be addressed in a new farm bill and believes a shift to climate-smart farm programs will include a number of conservation practices farmers are already implementing voluntarily. He says adequate broadband service is still an issue the Biden administration will need to address.

Benjamin Northey is the Chief Conductor of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and the Principal Conductor in Residence of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. He has previously held the posts of Associate Conductor of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Resident Guest Conductor of the Australian Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor of the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra.Born and raised in Ballarat, he embraced music as an expression from an early age. Flute, clarinet and saxophone were instruments of choice. An appetite and enthusiasm for further exploration saw him develop skills in arranging; and pursue piano, trumpet and violin to add to his developing skills set.Northey graduated with performance studies in classical saxophone from the University of Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. He followed this promptly with a Master of Music study in Conducting, from the Victorian College of the Arts, and continued study abroad. With a progressive and diverse approach to repertoire he has collaborated with a broad range of artists and he is adept at a terrific range of musical styles. And Benjamin Northey likes nothing more than to lead an audience through a sensory experience of music. He does it with passion, pride and perfection.Benjamin Northey joined me in a passionate discussion that considers the musician’s process; and ponders the present performance pause and absence of an audience.

This research examines how a consumer’s political ideology affects their attitudes toward an advertised product. The findings demonstrate when politically conservative consumers view advertisements that include LGBT imagery and male models (versus female models). H1: For politically conservative consumers, the presence of (supposedly) gay male (vs. female) models in an advertisement will have a negative influence on attitudes towards the advertised product. H2a: For politically conservative (vs. liberal) consumers, the presence of gay male (vs. female) models will cause higher levels of disgust. H2b: For politically conservative (vs. liberal) consumers, the presence of gay male (vs. female) models will have a negative influence on attitudes toward the ad. H2c: For politically conservative (vs. liberal) consumers, the negative influence of gay male (vs. female) models on attitude towards the product will be mediated by disgust and attitude toward the ad in a serial mediation. This week's guest on Open Mic is USDA Undersecretary for Farm Production and Conservation Bill Northey. Few years have presented as many weather challenges for farmers as 2019. USDA's Farm Service Agency has acted to lessen the effects on crop and livestock farmers as well as facilitated the Trump administration's trade assistance programs. In this interview, Northey speaks to the new signup for the Conservation Reserve Program, upcoming deadlines under the 2018 farm bill and the possibility of a third tranche of payments next year under the Market Facilitation Program.
USDA Under Secretary for Farm Production and Conservation Bill Northey visited North Dakota Friday and brought with him a disaster declaration for 47 of the state's 53 counties. During the visit, Northey and Senator John Hoeven checked in with DC Signal to Noise to talk about the declaration, the challenges facing the state's growers who face a harvest that may last through spring, and the prospects for additional federal help through both disaster aid and the Market Facilitation Program. This DC Signal to Noise extra is the raw audio of that conversation. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In 1947 actress Gay Gibson disappeared from her cabin on an ocean liner off the coast of West Africa. The deck steward, James Camb, admitted to pushing her body out a porthole, but insisted she had died of natural causes and not in a sexual assault. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll review the curious case of the porthole murder, which is still raising doubts today. We'll also explore another fraudulent utopia and puzzle over a pedestrian's victory. Intro: Soldiers in World War I described "shell sense" -- an uncanny foreknowledge of imminent shellfire.
