Baseball expert and first time Hall of Fame voter David Brown is on the pod to talk about the Winter Meetings, the joys of the Opryland Hotel, guys falling into fountains and whether or not Shohei can hold up the entire the market. They make the case for why Shohei should get out and see more of the country, wonder how close the Cubs actually came to getting him last time, something Joe Maddon doesn't get enough credit for, what Cody Bellinger's real value is, why the Cardinals settled for bad, old pitchers to replace their bad, old pitchers and if the Cubs really signalled they're ready to pay when they hired Craig Counsell. They also talk about the Hall of Fame, and why off the field stuff other than steroids is and should be keeping some guys out. And, why it took Andre Dawson 12 years to realize he had an Expos logo on his plaque. All that, and more. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/desipio/message

12-4-2023 Passed Ball Show. John spends this program talking about the College Football Playoff and how the selection committee got the right four teams to play for the National Championship. John gives his reasons why, including the precescdent that has been set for teams that lose a game early in the season. John understands the frustration from Florida State fans over their team not making the top four in spite of being undefeated. He blames Georgia for that happening; a Georgia victory would have all but assured a FS top four spot. John then talks about the Baseball WInter Meetings and reiterates his belief that more MLB teams are willing to spend near the top tier for an individual player than ever before and why he would be surprised if the Atlanta Braves signed Shohei Ohtani. During today's #SavingSportsHistory segment, John talks about the first Grey Cup, the birth of the Montreal Canadiens, the first (forced) pro football Championship game, Kenesaw Mountain Landis allowing black players to be signed, Floyd Patterson, Masanori Murakami, Jesse Burkett, Lee Smith, and Shannon Briggs.

Joe Rizzo brings you baseball, this time on his birthday! Riz wanted to celebrate his birthday by bringing on longtime friend Dave Schultz, who is the program director and host of afternoon drive show The Game Plan on WNSP 105.5 FM in Mobile, Ala. Riz & Dave have flown in the same circles for nearly 30 years, starting at the Baseball Winter Meetings at the Fountainbleu Hotel in Miami Beach in 1991. That is where the minor league war stories began, and they were aplenty for the episode. Dave is originally from Syracuse, NY, and explained why the Blue Jays using Buffalo as their home city for the pandemic has extra meaning to him. It has a connection to his first job in Baseball, where he was in Wichita, Kan., in the Texas League. Riz had Dave recount his stops all through the minors and also his radio and career posts, where he has recorded a long history of success. In addition to being Riz's birthday, it also was the anniversary of Dave moving to WNSP, where you often can hear Riz do guest spots about MMA (and maybe some baseball ones sometime in the future). For the Veteran of the Day, Riz asked Dave to choose. Thus, this show is for Judge Jack Schultz, who happens to be Dave's father. Judge Jack Schultz enlisted in the Army following high school graduation in January 1945. He was stationed at Fort Lewis outside of Seattle. Following an honorable discharge, he hitched-hiked back across the country. 12-12-2019 Passed Ball Show. John opens up this portion of the program by talking about the change amongst MLB free agents and the Baseball Winter Meetings. The last couple of sessions have seen the likes of top free agents not even sniffing their next contract due to owners' collision. The combination of team(s) needs and owners stepping up to the plate, free agency is well under way. Since the start of free agency, the Yankees have a history of getting the top pitcher when they have made it their top priority. John brings up the last ten examples of the Yankees getting the top free agent pitcher when they have made such declaration. John then talks about the impact new Hall of Famer Marvin Miller had on the game of baseball, why he was the pioneer of pioneers and what his election means for the Baseball Hall of Fame going forward. John then talks about the need for a salary floor being a priority or at the very least, a negotiating tactic, for an eventual salary cap in baseball. John then talks about some of the NFL coaches with the lowest career winning percentages and finishes off the show about an interesting fact about the Detroit Tigers winning percentage since 2000.

12-4-2019 Passed Ball Show. John opens up this program by talking about the feelings of the younger generation. As history has proceeded, older generations have had issues with the decisions of the younger. Today, the issue has more to do with right and wrong. The definition of right and wrong has changed to where a point can no longer be proven with a series of facts. Also, there are more angered takes against athletes (and others with known names) for bad decisions made. Little regard is put into whether others, including the judgmental outsider, have made similar bad decisions. Most importantly, John talks about the feeling that millennials have that those that have made bad decisions do not deserve the right to work. As if any financial, and in other cases life altering, penalties for crimes are not enough, these people believe athletes in these situations should never play the sport they play again. John then talks about the top ten NFL Head Coaches of All Time, and when he says, "All Time," he means all time. John then asks the question of whether this offseason will be a little bit busier than the past two. And he finishes off the filibuster by talking about his past experiences at the Baseball Winter Meetings and why this year may be the last he attends.

12-13-2018 Passed Ball Show- John opens his first show since returning from the Baseball Winter Meetings in Las Vegas, Nevada by talking about... how Pittsburgh Steelers HC Mike Tomlin has every right to talk about his players that are "there" as opposed to answer any redundant question about Le'Veon Bell. Bell is Benedict Arnold, similar to Ice Cube in NWA. Though neither Bell nor Ice Cube intended to dessert their group/ team, both left their peers with no choice but to feel so. Similar to NWA, the Steelers are moving on, exactly what is expected to happen when a player chooses not to play for their team. The Steelers have replaced Bell, the same way NWA replaced Cube. (Has the point been made yet?) John then talks about the increase in the amount of teams that plan on being competitive, a number much higher than last off season. For those Mets fans who think the team should "just sign a catcher," would you feel the same if that was the only move they could make due to payroll restrictions? Are you okay with just Diaz and Familia? An outfield of Nimmo, Conforto, and Lagares? Even though the UCLA student knew she was not eligible for to win a car for her layup, foul shot, three pointer, and half court shot, John talks about several reasons this situation should have been avoided.
Rick Stroud and Tom Jones discuss Tuesday's news from the Baseball Winter Meetings that the Rays Ybor City Stadium plan is now dead as the Rays will begin the process of looking for a new site, potentially out of the market in the future. While we've done shows from multiple studios in the past, Jobbing Out this week is a bit different, as we start the show in the studio, and then by the end, we end up at the Baseball Winter Meetings. Aaron and AJ start off together for the first two segments. In the first segment, they talk everything TLC and Smackdown, starting with James Ellsworth surprise decision at TLC. They ask if it's a real heel turn, and try to piece together exactly where they're trying to go with it. They move on to the Wyatt Family winning, and how long they can run with the latest team to use the Freebird Rule. They also talk Alexa Bliss winning the title and ask whether they botched the Natalya "reveal". Segment 2 (29:00) starts with RAW talk. They break down the interactions between Owens and Jericho, and ask if that's what we're getting at the Rumble, and where they could go from there. They also both question the assumption that everyone has been operating under that The New Day is definitely breaking Demolition's record after this week's RAW and the draw between The Club and Cesaro and Sheamus. They talk about the upcoming ironwoman match, plus ask if WWE is making a conscious effort to move somewhat away from "PG". Then (47:00) they turn their attention towards NXT, and the big title change from the weekend. They agree it was the right move, but are unsure exactly where to go for the next Takeover. They talk about the #1 contender tournament, and run down the possibilities. Aaron then brings up Tye Dillinger, and his statement from this past week, and they discuss the possibility of something happening that really hasn't happened before, involving Dillinger. Finally, they wrap up talking about the new women signees, and how it could impact the NXT women's division. In segment 3, AJ departs and the show moves to the Baseball Winter Meetings (1:04:00), where Glenn comes in, and Aaron and Glenn are joined by Brian Knobbs and Jerry Sags, The Nasty Boys. They all talk about The Legends of Wrestling tour, and how that got started. They cover topics including Hulk Hogan, Goldberg, hardcore wrestling, and how the role of women in wrestling has expanded since their time. After that, Aaron and Glenn wrap up the show by talking about Matt Hardy showing up at ROH's Final Battle, Linda McMahon joining the Cabinet, and the release of the list of the top matches of 2016 on the Network.
Episode 18 is another post-conference installment, this time, on the heels of the 2016 Major League Baseball Winter Meetings. It was a very productive three days in Washington, D.C. - not just for the White Sox! - but for me as it related to reconnecting with many former colleagues in baseball. I spent time outside of the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center as well, meeting with the Redskins, Capitals, Wizards and Under Armour. The D.C../Baltimore-area is unique in that it features two major sports markets within an hour of each other, so it made for a busy few days. The Winter Meetings were my focus, however, and one lasting memory I'll take away, which I discuss in this episode, is when two PEBO Job Fair attendees approached me out of the blue to introduce themselves. We struck up a nice conversation and they talked about how while yes, the Winter Meetings can be intimidating for job seekers, there isn't anything to lose by walking up to someone to say hello and show interest in them. I appreciated their initiative and drive, and I hope they left the meetings with a positive experience...and a job offer! Thank you for listening. Its time for the Winter Meetings, and with the hot stove boiling over(or the pot thats on the stove... whatever it doesn't matter) this looks like it will be an exciting week in San Diego. What will the Mets and Yankees do?

Pat O'Conner presented a revolutionary plan for minor league baseball's 160 teams at the 2012 Baseball Winter Meetings. Dubbed "Project Brand," the mandate aims to change how all of the teams market themselves nationally to 5-10 corporate sponsors. O'Conner talks about some of the goals of Project Brand, of how it will effect each team's marketing, revenue streams, and his belief in the "power of one." O'Conner discusses the role of the Player Development Contract Agreement with Major League Baseball which lasts until 2020 in why Project Brand is key to implement within the next year as well as how both MiLB and each minor league team will have to work together continuously to put forth the best possible activation for any corporate sponsor sold.
