Please join me for this vibrant episode with the amazing Karen O’Conner, founder of the Menopause, Marriage, and Motherhood podcast. Karen is dynamic woman who sought answers from her own experience through menopause, and then went on to further share what she found out with the world. After raising four children, Karen found herself smack bang in the middle of menopause and with zero idea of what to do with her life. Depressed, lonely and majorly hormonal, she was shamefully convinced that she was the only person who felt this way, as every other woman she knew seemed to have their act together. But as she began to talk to people, she realized that most women going through midlife experience a similar sort of thing. She also realized that even though menopause is something that 50% of the population will experience, it's neither understood not discussed enough. Karen started her podcast, blog, and Facebook group to bring this topic into the forefront of the conversation with grace, humor, and a style all her own. We have a great chat and clarify what menopause actually is, signs we can watch for as we go through perimenopause, and how we can maintain steady and sure footing as we go through these biological changes. If you are a man and think this episode isn’t for you—think again! If you have any women in your life who you care about, learning and understanding what they go through throughout the lifetime of their hormonal cycles will surely make life for pleasant for both of you! Enjoy this episode of real talk, plenty of giggles, and leave with a better understanding of your own biology. Latvia's elegant capital, Riga, is one of Europe's best-kept secrets. Strategically located on the Eastern Baltic coast at the mouth of the River Daugava, Riga was founded in the early 13th century as a trading hub, a military outpost of the Holy Roman Empire, and a base for Roman Catholic prelates to convert both the pagan natives and the Orthodox Christians of Rus. Kevin O'Connor's new book, The House of Hemp and Butter: A History of Old Riga (Northern Illinois University Press, 2019) charts the fascinating history of Riga from the earliest days to Peter the Great's conquest of the much-coveted trading port in the early 18th century. O'Connor's book recounts in fascinating detail the personalities who shaped and dominated Riga's political and economic history. For six centuries, Riga's fortunes rose and fell in step with major political events of Europe, as the uneasy triumvirate of the church, military, and merchants balanced control and power over the city, ever hopeful to keep goods such as furs, timber, resin, and beeswax flowing from the vast Russian forest lands, through Riga and onto the rest of the known world. O'Connor introduces us to the infamous Livonian Brotherhood of the Sword — a military order of knights based in the city, canny and diplomatic prelates, and the notorious Brotherhood of the Blackfaces, one of the city's professional associations. From the outset, Riga was a multi-national and polyglot city, much as it remains today. Her membership in the Hanseatic League — the European economic fraternity, which enjoyed a virtual monopoly on trade — greatly enhanced the city's prestige and economic influence, as Germans, Poles, and other Hansa members established successful trading relationships with Riga's guilds. Riga's rapid adoption of Protestantism in the 16th century forged other strong links with her neighbors and separated her even further culturally from the growing might of Russia. Though Rigans cherished their independence, the history of their city is one of almost constant occupation or rule of a foreign power, as the larger players in the Baltic constantly fought to gain the prize that was the city on the Daugava. O’Connor’s accounts of German, Polish, and later Swedish occupations help readers understand why the city developed in the way it did. O'Connor leaves us at Riga’s nadir. As plague ravishes the war-torn city, Tsar Peter the Great captures Riga as part of his conquest of the Eastern Baltic in the Great Northern War, which established the Russian Empire as the preeminent naval power in the Baltic Sea, but relegates Riga to a second-tier trading hub. Moreover, O'Conner suggests, Russia's conquest of the city forces Riga to adopt "Eastern," which never sits comfortably with the centuries of Riga's primarily "Western" culture and nature. We are left hoping that perhaps now, as Riga sloughs off the Soviet occupation, she will once more take her rightful place in the Baltic’s panoply of prosperous ports. The House of Hemp and Butter is an impeccably-researched and very engagingly written account of Riga's fascinating social, economic, and political history. Kevin O'Connor is the Chair of History at Gonzaga University. Jennifer Eremeeva is an American expatriate writer who writes about travel, culture, cuisine and culinary history, Russian history, and Royal History, with bylines in Reuters, Fodor's, USTOA, LitHub, The Moscow Times, and Russian Life. But after the perfect and poetic tribute to the character of Brian O'Conner and Paul Walker himself in Furious 7, I wasn't sure if he'd be back. Well, the internet, set photos, and such have proven wrong. And we very well may see Brian again. Am I gassed up, or have I run out of steam with this schtick? Tune in, people.

And in this collaboration aim to protect the gift of life by coordinating a number of facets: Creating a registry of organ donors, working with hospitals and medical professionals to find the match of someone who tragically loses their life with many people who are in need of the different organs and tissues of the body. It's very simple to do register, which can be done online, or people do it when renewing a driver's license. Someone's tragedy becomes life giving in the event their organs can be given to another person. It leaves a legacy of hope. Ideally this is a conversation to have before there is a tragic event, which helps the process to unfold more fluidly. www.lcnw.org

With a mastery of mind melting guitar, Christian fronts a power Quartet that is leaving a mark on every trail they blaze. Letting licks rip like Billy Gibbons, Derek Trucks, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd, O'Conner isn't just making a statement, he's detonating one. Mixing Stevie Ray Vaughan type frenetics with a Iggy pop frenzy, he's a formidable force to be reckoned with. Over the past few years he has opened for Jennifer Page, Leigh Jones, Rivers Monroe, and The Howling Tongues. In addition he has performed sets at NASCAR & NHRA races, Boston's First Night & Harborfest and a red hot college tour. Armed with full backline and a front of house system, Christian and his band are headed out on the highway to support his forthcoming 2017 album release "Wine Over Water - Blood over Wine", a 10 track behemoth that's set to rattle the foundation that classic rock was built on. One of the things that I believe we (corporately, not you specifically) have lost connection with in our history, is that our Framers and Founders were people, not demigods (Thomas Jefferson notwithstanding). In 1865, George Washington will be featured in a painting that is hung in the dome of the US Capitol, visible through the oculus of the dome. The painting portrays Washington being elevated to the status of a deity. The idea of portraying Washington as a god, really does not offend most Americans.  On occasion, it's worth our time to talk about and recall the realities of these men and women. They lived, they loved, they got mad, they had joys. They traveled and they discussed. They argued and they liked and disliked each other. They wrote copious letters to each other in flowery language that both complemented and occasionally berated each other. They saw things differently. Some favored one way, others favored another. On March 30, 1788, six of the necessary nine States have ratified the Constitution. Debate is leaning towards Ratification in Maryland, and in South Carolina the resistance of the country folk is being dealt with. In New Hampshire, the efforts to manipulate things by the Federalists are being indefatigably resisted by the anti-Federalists in Convention. New York has not gathered in convention as yet, but already more than seventy letters have been published as "The Federalist Papers" arguing for the ratification. Likewise, dozens of anti-ratification letters have been published. The debate, while hopeful, is still in doubt. There are many who believe that there will be a new United States that will not have all of the original States as a part. In Bath, England, Abigail Adams begins her trip home to The United States after three years in Paris and London.  Over the past six months, a couple from Alexandria, John and Elizabeth O'Conner, have been corresponding and even in early February, visiting the Washington's. Mr. O'Conner is a "barrister," from Ireland, who plans to write a topographical and geographical description of The United States. Elizabeth has opened a small school for girls in Alexandria. At Mt. Vernon, George Washington sends a letter to Mr. O'Conner, thanking him for his kind words and invitation to a speech. A presentation on eloquence by Mr. O'Conner which Washington clearly had no intention of attending. Probably because he knows what the O'Conner's are really (probably) up to...

Pat O'Conner presented a revolutionary plan for minor league baseball's 160 teams at the 2012 Baseball Winter Meetings. Dubbed "Project Brand," the mandate aims to change how all of the teams market themselves nationally to 5-10 corporate sponsors. O'Conner talks about some of the goals of Project Brand, of how it will effect each team's marketing, revenue streams, and his belief in the "power of one." O'Conner discusses the role of the Player Development Contract Agreement with Major League Baseball which lasts until 2020 in why Project Brand is key to implement within the next year as well as how both MiLB and each minor league team will have to work together continuously to put forth the best possible activation for any corporate sponsor sold.

In June 1983, Doug and Peggy Ryen, their ten-year-old daughter and a 11-year-old house guest were brutally murdered in Chino Hills, California. Two days before, Kevin Cooper had escaped from a nearby prison and hid in a vacant house 125 yards below the murdered family's hilltop house. After the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department established that he had ben there, it focused on him as the lone assailant despite numerous eyewitness reports that implicated three white men as the perpetrators. Kevin Cooper was convicted of the murders in 1985 and has been on Death Row at San Quentin since then. SCAPEGOAT shows how the sheriff's office and the District Attorney's office of San Bernardino County framed him for the horrific murders and how the justice system has failed him at almost every turn in his long, drawn-out appeal process. As O'Conner's shocking but thorough investigation shows, the sheriff's department discarded information that pointed at other suspects, destroyed evidence that exculpated Cooper and planted evidence that implicated him. If it were not for a court-ordered moratorium on executions in California over the lethal injection controversy, Cooper-with no appeals remaining-would have been executed. SCAPEGOAT-THE CHINO HILLS MURDERS AND THE FRAMING OF KEVIN COOPER-J. In this account of the trial of controversial death row inmate Mumia Abu-Jamal, O'Connor, editor and publisher of crimemagazine.com, clearly lays out his case that Abu-Jamal should receive at least a new trial, if not complete exoneration. O'Connor asserts that Abu-Jamal was framed for the 1981 murder of police officer Daniel Faulkner because of a vendetta by Philadelphia mayor Frank Rizzo and the police due to Abu-Jamal's defense, as a journalist, of the cultish countercultural group MOVE. Relying heavily on court transcripts and prior books on the case, O'Connor shows what he sees as the judge's bias, troubled relations between Abu-Jamal and his defense lawyer and dubious statements by various witnesses. Abu-Jamal was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death; later overturned, the sentence could still be reinstated pending a decision by the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. Now in the wake of Faulkner's widow's recent book alleging Abu-Jamal's guilt, it has made it more difficult to be swayed entirely by O'Connor's arguments, but he makes a strong case that the investigation into Faulkner's murder deserves another look.
