In this exclusive episode of The Voice of Retail podcast, host Michael LeBlanc interviews Karl Haller, Partner at IBM Consulting and leader of their retail and consumer products center of competency, ahead of his highly anticipated keynote presentation at Retail Council of Canada's STORE2025 conference on June 3rd.With nearly 30 years of retail experience at brands including Brooks Brothers, Tommy Hilfiger, and Karl Lagerfeld, Haller brings unique insights at the intersection of retail business and technology to one of Canada's premier retail events.Haller, who will take the main stage following fellow keynote speaker Ira Kalish, positions AI as "the biggest transformation that any of us have seen in our careers," comparing its significance to the advent of computing in the 1970s. While acknowledging the hype surrounding AI, he maintains that we're in the early stages of a fundamental shift in how retail operates—a message he'll expand upon at the STORE2025 conference. When discussing strategy during uncertain times, Haller advises retailers to focus on action rather than extensive planning: "If you've got a million dollars to spend, spend a million dollars on 100 MVPs. Don't spend a million dollars on an AI strategy project because it's going to be out of date by the time you've done it." He recommends scenario planning with clear indicators that can guide decision-making in unpredictable environments.Looking at retail formats, Haller notes that success isn't determined by format alone but by how retailers innovate within their sector. He highlights Walmart's nimble approach to technology implementation, PepsiCo's management of their extensive logistics network, and innovative approaches from companies like Unilever and Kroger. The conversation culminates with Haller identifying four under-appreciated retail technology trends:Expanding AI beyond words, pictures, and code to work with numerical data like SKU forecasting, potentially reducing forecast error rates to low single digitsIntegrating AI with other technologies like computer vision, IoT devices, robotics, biometrics, electronic shelf labels, and retail mediaDeveloping an "operating system for AI" to manage the projected billion new applications by 2028Most critically, bringing people along on the technology journey through comprehensive training and continuous learningAttendees of STORE2025 can expect Haller to dive deeper into these insights during his keynote presentation, providing retail leaders with actionable strategies for navigating technological transformation while balancing innovation with practical implementatio Michael LeBlanc is the president and founder of M.E. LeBlanc & Company Inc, a senior retail advisor, keynote speaker and now, media entrepreneur. He has been on the front lines of retail industry change for his entire career. Michael has delivered keynotes, hosted fire-side discussions and participated worldwide in thought leadership panels, most recently on the main stage in Toronto at Retail Council of Canada's Retail Marketing conference with leaders from Walmart & Google. He brings 25+ years of brand/retail/marketing & eCommerce leadership experience with Levi's, Black & Decker, Hudson's Bay, CanWest Media, Pandora Jewellery, The Shopping Channel and Retail Council of Canada to his advisory, speaking and media practice.Michael produces and hosts a network of leading retail trade podcasts, including the award-winning No.1 independent retail industry podcast in America, Remarkable Retail with his partner, Dallas-based best-selling author Steve Dennis; Canada's top retail industry podcast The Voice of Retail and Canada's top food industry and one of the top Canadian-produced management independent podcasts in the country, The Food Professor with Dr. Sylvain Charlebois from Dalhousie University in Halifax.Rethink Retail has recognized Michael as one of the top global retail experts for the fifth year in a row, the National Retail Federation has designated Michael as on their Top Retail Voices for 2025, Thinkers 360 has named him on of the Top 50 global thought leaders in retail, RTIH has named him a top 100 global though leader in retail technology and Coresight Research has named Michael a Retail AI Influencer. What's the return on your AI investment? In today's episode, I'm joined by Varun Bijlani, Global Managing Partner for Hybrid Cloud Services at IBM Consulting, to explore why 2025 is shaping up to be a pivotal year for IT leaders under pressure to deliver stronger, measurable outcomes from technology investments. While many IT projects have historically delivered modest returns, expectations are rising. With a growing number of executives focused on increasing ROI by 25 percent or more, the ability to connect AI efforts to real business value is becoming non-negotiable. Drawing on insights from IBM Consulting's latest book, The Great Tech Reset, Varun outlines how the shift from experimental AI projects to production-level deployment is exposing the cracks in outdated infrastructure strategies. He explains why many businesses are trapped in what he calls a hybrid by default architecture, and how that limits the potential of generative AI. Instead, he advocates for a hybrid by design approach, one that aligns cloud infrastructure with AI goals from the outset. We discuss the organizational mindset shifts needed to move from fragmented systems to intentionally built environments that scale with innovation. Varun also shares real-world examples of companies achieving returns as high as 3.3 times their investment through more intentional planning and execution. As IT leaders look to reset priorities for the year ahead, how can they build the kind of foundation that allows AI to thrive? And what steps can they take today to ensure their technology choices drive value, not just cost?

In this episode, Kathryn talks with Ari Sheinkin, CMO, IBM Consulting, discussing how data and testing unleashes creative potential. Ari dives into the 'data first' principle at IBM, the importance of understanding customers through data, and how this approach impacts marketing decisions. He also talks about an exciting campaign at Grand Central Station and how AI is improving campaigns. Guest Quote:So a lot of the data science that I'm spending time now back with my old team is the idea of buying groups.  And the complexity of the buying dynamics when you have to message and engage with 17 different stakeholders and all their influencers at the same time.  And there's some really good insight that's come out of it, for instance, for us, is if we can get to four members or more of the buying group within 60 days, that's the trigger for us. Which we never really understood before. We thought there's lots of them, let's just throw our marketing out there. But it really ends up being what we call the four plus model. Four or more members of the buying group in 60 days on message, and we see a four times increase in our conversion rates.Episode Breakdown: [03:07] Alchemy Unveiled: The data science of buying committeesBuying committees are very complex and marketing to them can feel like a major challenge. Ari gives us insights into the data science that has transformed how they reach large groups of stakeholders. [12:26] From Nuggets to Campaign Gold: Grabbing attention in Grand Central StationTaking the tension out of the demand problem - don't rush straight to demand. Taking the approach to introduce yourself and share information, instead of selling, can drive engagement in an impressive way. [26:01] Gold Rush: There's no tension between data and creativity Data should never stop someone from being creative. It should allow creativity to exist in a testable framework, allowing for experimentation.  Links & Resources:Connect with KathrynConnect with AriLearn more about DeluxeLearn more about IBM

Anyone who has experimented with generative AI knows the tech is still flawed. Despite massive investments in AI models, tools, and applications, the fact that AI outputs are still biased and inconsistently accurate raises global concerns regarding trustworthiness and who is responsible for making AI safe as it evolves at earth-shattering speed. The unfortunate truth is that presently, the majority of AI models only reflect a narrow sample of our collective humanity, inevitably reinforcing the existing biases of those who programmed AI and the narrow data sets used, making today's AI models inept at delivering diverse perspectives. Unpacking the ethics and path to a safer, more responsible, and representative AI future is Phaedra Boinodiris, IBM Consulting's Global Leader for Trustworthy AI. Phaedra is a top voice, author, speaker, and one of the earliest leaders responsible for reimagining AI initiatives. Her recent book, “AI for the Rest of Us,” and her role as co-founder of the Future World Alliance highlight her commitment to integrating ethics into AI education and development. She's here to discuss the need for inclusive AI that represents all of humanity, outlining the important considerations leaders should take into account to ensure their AI initiatives are ethical, inclusive, and able to effectively augment our capabilities without compromising human values. Further, what AI governance models look like at IBM and how to develop the right teams to develop truly groundbreaking AI solutions without compromise.  We talk about how AI ethics intersects with broader societal issues, including education, corporations, and parental responsibilities. Phaedra also shares IBM's approaches to AI training, tools, teams, and transparency as well as the importance of AI literacy in different fields, and why diversity is crucial in AI development. Tune in to understand why we must approach AI with the intentionality it demands so it can work for humanity, and not against it. — Key Takeaways: Introducing Phaedra Boinodiris & Her Take On Ethical AI (00:00) IBM's Ethical Governance Model For Training AI (12:58) AI Transparency & Accountability vs. The AI Arms Race (17:11) Is Decentralized AI The Way Forward? OpenAI's launch of GPT-4 Omni represents a significant advancement in artificial intelligence. This cutting-edge AI model features real-time voice interaction capabilities, allowing users to engage in verbal conversations with a human-like AI chatbot. GPT-4 Omni showcases impressive voice capabilities, including emotional expression and the ability to identify emotions and tones in users' speech. Moreover, it can process text, vision, and audio simultaneously, making it faster and more versatile than its predecessors. The recent solar storm mentioned in a podcast episode disrupted GPS systems, significantly impacting precision farming and critical agriculture operations. The disruption affected the accuracy of GPS systems, particularly real-time kinematic systems used in modern tractors. Precision agriculture heavily relies on these systems for planting crops with uniform spacing, and any inaccuracies could result in crop damage and reduced yield. This incident highlighted the vulnerability of modern tractors to satellite disruptions, emphasizing the need for robust contingency plans and resilient infrastructure in the agriculture sector. IBM Consulting has launched Copilot Runway, a service designed to help businesses seamlessly integrate their AI assistants into their workflows. This program allows organizations to collaborate with IBM consultants to develop customized copilots tailored to their specific requirements.
