Jacqui Oatley is a hugely respected sports journalist, commentator and presenter who in 2007 became the first woman ever to commentate on Match Of The Day. In fact, her career is full of media firsts for women, although all she ever wanted to do was the job she loved.A football obsessive from a young age, a serious knee injury in her twenties led to her reappraising her career. She retrained as a sports journalist, she worked her way up from non-league football, to the Premier League on Radio Five Live. An opportunity to commentate on Britain's flagship football highlights programme blew up into a huge national media story with her at the centre. As the first woman to ever call a match on the show, she faced a torrent of publicity, criticism and, frequently, abuse. Jacqui tells her story vividly and honestly from the inside, describing what it was like to be at the centre of a cultural moment, how she had to develop a thick skin to get through the aftermath, how things have progressed and why there's still work to do across the board. Since their World Cup victory, the Spanish team's success has been overshadowed by Spanish football president Luis Rubiales non-consensually kissing player Jenni Hermoso. Hermoso described the actions of Rubiales as an "impulse-driven, sexist out-of-place act without any consent". Rubiales denies this and says it was "spontaneous" and "mutual". The kiss has caused a backlash across football and in Spain, where protesters have called for action "to demand a sport free of sexist violence". On the Sky News Daily, Niall Paterson speaks to football commentator and founding member of Women in Football, Jacqui Oatley about how far the treatment and representation of women in the sport has come, and how far it still has to go. Plus, Spanish journalist Maria Ramírez on why the kiss has sparked its own hashtag #SeAcabó and a MeToo moment that reaches far beyond football. When art historian Joanna Wolfarth was pregnant with her first child, she assumed she would breastfeed, as her mother had fed her. This didn't go according to plan. In a bid to understand her own feelings and attitudes about feeding her baby, she has just published a new book called Milk: An Intimate History of Breastfeeding . The premier league and the football association has been spelling out what they'll do to attract more women both as players and fans. But critics say women players are still too often thought of as an afterthought when it comes to both resources and facilities. And that fans are put off because they are badly catered for and misogyny can be rife in football stadia. We hear from football corrrespondent Jacqui Oatley and Shaista Aziz from the campaign group The Three Hijabis and the Academic Dr Stacey Pope from Durham University. Do you consider yourself to be a lucky person? ‘Lucky girl syndrome' is a new trend taking over TikTok with over 80 million views of the hashtag. The makeup of football clubs' boardrooms is typically a world away from the days when the majority of teams were the fiefdoms of local businessmen known simply as 'Mr Chairman'. With so many horror stories over the past two decades, running a club in the right way is both important and more complex than ever before. In this series, Jacqui Oatley hears from the men and women at every level of the game trying to bring about positive change to their clubs, their fans and the wider football community

The Footie! England's through to the final of the Euros after a nail biting match against Denmark last night. We speak to Emma Hayes, Chelsea Women Manager who was on the TV commentary team last night; to Jacqui Oatley who's commentated for World Cups and European Championships for both the BBC and ITV, and to Jane Merrick, Policy Editor at the i newspaper who tweeted last night about loving the celebration. We also hear from 2 members of Atomic Kitten, who sing us some of their song, Whole Again, specially reversioned for the England team. We talk about money with Otegha Uwagba. She's got a new book called We Need To Talk About Money. At the end of last month Bill Cosby was freed from prison after serving less than three years of a potential ten year sentence. Accused by more than 60 women of rape or sexual assault he's always maintained his innocence. Victoria Valentino was one of those women who made allegations but didn't speak up for 45 years. She tells Emma her story. And contraception and environmentalism. If your pill, coil or condoms came with a message about how having fewer children is better for the environment, how would you feel about it? The idea of limiting or controlling the number of people on the planet is highly controversial but there are academics and specialists in women's reproductive rights who think now is the time to restart the conversation about having smaller families. Emma speaks to journalist and commentator, Ella Whelan, and to Professor of Policy, Systems and Reproductive Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Susannah Mayhew.

We speak to Jacqui Oatley, the first female Match of the Day commentator and a leading advocate for women's football and women in broadcasting. We reminisce about sharing a press box at Bradford Park Avenue in 2003, discuss her journey from non-league to World Cups and Champions League and why it's so important to be authentic - even if that means interviewing Sam Allardyce with Peppa Pig stickers in her hair. She explains how she would have prepared for that first Match of the Day commentary differently, why her non-league start gives her an important grounding in the days of European Super League greed and talks through how far women's football has come - and why it is unfairly maligned given the struggles female players had to go through. An insightful and powerful interview from a trailblazing broadcaster (and Wolves fan).
She was the first-ever woman to commentate on Match of the Day and has blazed a trail for women in sports media across the UK. In this episode, Alison speaks with the impressive and influential Jacqui Oatley about how she has helped change the media for women. Follow Alison on Twitter, Instagram and TikTok @AliBenderTV
My guest today is passionate about ensuring all women have equal access to working in sports media. Sports presenter Jacqui Oatley was awarded an MBE in 2016 for her services to broadcasting and diversity in sport. Jacqui is best known by many as the first female commentator to appear on the BBC's Match of the Day, which she went on to present in 2015. A Director of the Women in Football network Jacqui anchored the Women's World Cup in 2015 and 2013 Euros for BBC, and then the men's 2016 Euros and 2018 World cup coverage for ITV Sport. She was presenter of the BBC's flagship sports news show Sportsweek on 5Live and now hosts football and darts for ITV and recently appointed the first female host of Sky Sports hugely popular Sunday Supplement show. It's no wonder that in 2015 Jacquie was named as the 8th most influential woman in sport by the Independent. Jacqui talks about her lifelong obsession with football, how she changed careers at 27 to re-train as a journalist and how lonely and isolated she felt after the hideous build up to her first appearance on Match of The Day.
Jacqui Oatley is joined by Alan Smith and Steve Sidwell for a discussion of the latest talking points from around the world of football.
