My latest Quantum Tech Pod with Andrei Dragomir – Co-Founder and CEO of quantum company Aquark Technologies is live! Andrei grew up in Romania in a house with a scientific focus: his mother is a professor of physics, and his father is an engineer.  He remembers as a kid going to his mom's lab after school, where his toys of choice were the devices lying around—the optics, the lasers, the electronics. He moved to the UK to study, and for the first two-thirds of his PhD at the University of Southampton, he focused on microfabrication and vacuum science rather than quantum physics. Aquark Technologies was spun out of the University of Southampton in 2021 to develop the world's smallest plug-and-play cold atom quantum device. Andrei and I discussed recent developments in cold atom technology, including the invention of “super molasses,” which simplifies miniaturizing and mainstreaming this technology. One application is a “gravity camera,” which can scan large areas simultaneously and monitor long-term gravity signatures. The company has been selected for the Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA) initiative, a NATO-funded accelerator program. Aquark aims to miniaturize quantum devices for multiple real-world applications, such as sensing, computing, and communications, leveraging cold atom technology. Check out my wide-ranging conversation with Andrei! It is widely recognized as a leader in single photon sources, achieving the world's highest light matter coupling efficiency. Kurt is the CEO and is also a major investor in Sparrow Quantum.  Kurt grew up in a small town in Denmark and studied quantum mechanics at the Niels Bohr Institute, attending advanced quantum mechanics lectures given by Aage Bohr, one of Niels Bohr's sons! Sparrow Quantum's flagship product is a deterministic single photon source, a superior alternative to probabilistic quantum emitters. When the photon is excited in the quantum dots, it only has one path to follow. Every time you trigger it, it will emit one photon, resulting in billions of indistinguishable photons per second. To do the same with probabilistic approaches would require millions of emitters. Sparrow Quantum is a component provider and works with various partners. My latest Quantum Tech Pod with Grégoire Ribordy, CEO of ID Quantique (IDQ)is live!  Gregoire went to EPFL (Écolepolytechnique fédérale de Lausanne) - the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology - where he studied physics. After working for a year in Japan at Nikon, the camera company, he returned to Switzerland in the mid-90s.  Interesting back story: Just before 2000, one of the very first quantum companies called Magic Technologies, founded in Boston, was going around the world trying to license QKD for quantum cryptography.  They came to Geneva and offered to partner with Grégoire and his team. But he said to his colleagues, “Why don't we just do it on our own? Why would we do it with a company far away when we could do it here and control our own destiny?” So they founded ID Quantique (IDQ) in 2001. The first application, which surprised him, was online gambling. In the early 2000s, many casino games like poker were moving online and they needed a source of entropy. It was a market that IDQ found by chance. Today, IDQ prepares organizations for a quantum-safe future by providing quantum key distribution, Quantum-Safe Key management solutions, quantum random number generators, and single photon counters.  IDQ recently signed an agreement with Singtel to develop Singapore's first Nationwide Quantum-Safe Network Plus (NQSN+) for enterprises. An innovator to the core, he competed in the International Young Physicist tournament but soon realized he was 50 years too late to develop new groundbreaking low level electronics. Quantum computers provided the perfect setting for him to apply his passion for physics with his desire to innovate.   His collaborative work with Raphaël Lescanne (CTO and Co-Founder) on a bit-flip-protected qubit design that could dramatically improve quantum error correction led them to start Alice & Bob in 2020.   The two error types that affect a quantum bit are bit flips - that switch a zero into a one and vice versa – a somewhat classical error – and phase flips - a purely quantum error that switches the phase of a superposition from zero plus one into zero minus one.   Alice & Bob's cat qubits exponentially suppress the first type of error - bit flips - by design, thereby providing a new level of error correction! Thanks to this feature, a cat qubit-based quantum computer would run Shors' algorithm with 60 times fewer qubits than the state-of-the-art, the company demonstrated earlier this year.   Check out Chris's conversation with Théau!

The marquee matches of the day were both won in decisive straight sets, with Stan Wawrinka romping over Andy Murray, and Coco Gauff controlling play against Johanna Konta. Tumaini Carayol, NCR's newly-enshrined Spain and Sub-Saharan Africa correspondent, joins to discuss these matches and the reactions to them. Another Slam approaches at a time of year which has never held a Slam before, so Ben and Courtney try to gather their physical and mental strength to take on what is shaping up to be an incredibly challenging Slam in many ways. We start with the women, where Simona Halep is a clear favorite, but parity abounds also in women's tennis, as always. Garbine Muguruza appears set for success, and Serena and Azarenka are also intriguing in a Slam which may reward power more than the average French Open. On the men's side we discuss Novak Djokovic's status as favorite, and detour into topics such as the complaints of players who are testing positive, the "struggles" of Stefanos Tsitsipas, the height of Diego Schwartzman, the wonders of Sasha Bubbles, and more. Also, we discuss what we'll miss most about Paris.  Thank you again for the incredible support for NCR we've received in recent weeks on the NCR Patreon! My Future Business Interview with CHRISTOPHER BISHOP #futurist #jobs #christopherbishop Hi, and welcome to the show! On today's My Future Business Show I have the pleasure of spending time with workplace futurist, TEDx speaker, LinkedIn Learning instructor and former IBMer CHRISTOPHER BISHOP. Christopher writes and speaks at universities and corporate settings about emerging technologies including AI, crypto assets, blockchain, augmented and virtual reality and robotics. He is also a nonlinear, multimodal careerist who has had eight careers so far – including touring rock musician (played with Robert Palmer), jingle producer (sang on the first Kit Kat TV commercial “Gimme A Break”) and Web site project manager (developed Johnson & Johnson's first corporate Web site). Chris also spent 15 years at IBM in a variety of roles including business strategy consultant and communications executive driving social media adoption and the use of virtual worlds for training and events. Based on this atypical career path, Chris developed a program called “How to succeed at jobs that don't exist yet” to give today's learners insight into how to navigate the new world of work. He has shared this perspective at various universities including Baruch, Columbia, Duke, Queens College, Stern School of Business at NYU, Texas A&M and Union College. Chris recently recorded a live-action course for LinkedIn Learning called “Future-proofing your data science career” – which went live in April 2020. In addition, Chris co-authored a white paper last year with MIT Media Lab professor Sandy Pentland titled Blockchain+AI+Human”, describing the business possibilities as well as the powerful socio-cultural implications of connecting AI and blockchain. 14 February 2020 | St. Valentine | Menlo Park, Calif. On a beautiful hike in the California foothills, we grapple with a very important question: When it comes to obscure third-century martyrs, what’s love got to do, got to do with it? Also, this week’s Shakespearean comedy about love and marriage, The Taming of the Shrew, brings our conversation back to Ephesians 5, which proposes an answer to a perennial question: What should our love for one another look like when “we love because Christ first loved us” (1 Jn 4:19)? Mutual submission, total commitment, self-gift without remainder: it’s all here. Even the chocolates and flowers. Opening music: “Hark, all Ye Lovely Saints,” composed by Thomas Weelkes, performed by the King’s Singers, dir. Christopher Bishop, 1974. This 70th episode of Learning Machines 101 we discuss how to identify facial emotion expressions in images using an advanced clustering technique called Stochastic Neighborhood Embedding. We discuss the concept of recognizing facial emotions in images including applications to problems such as: improving online communication quality, identifying suspicious individuals such as terrorists using video cameras, improving lie detector tests, improving athletic performance by providing emotion feedback, and designing smart advertising which can look at the customer’s face to determine if they are bored or interested and dynamically adapt the advertising accordingly. To address this problem we review clustering algorithm methods including K-means clustering, Linear Discriminant Analysis, Spectral Clustering, and the relatively new technique of Stochastic Neighborhood Embedding (SNE) clustering. At the end of this podcast we provide a brief review of the classic machine learning text by Christopher Bishop titled “Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning”.
