The ALL NEW Big Wakeup Call with Ryan Gatenby

Chicago's own Amy Landecker called in on September 22, 2017 to talk about an all-new season (season 4) of her critically-acclaimed and Emmy-Award winning Amazon Prime series Transparent.ABOUT AMY LANDECKERLandecker is best known for playing the first-born child in Transparent, Amazon Video's groundbreaking series about a transgender woman and her chaotic yet lovable family. She stars opposite Jeffrey Tambor, Jay Duplass, Judith Light and Gaby Hoffman. Additionally, Landecker made her directorial debut on Transparent: The Lost Sessions, a 10-episode off shoot of comedic shorts for Funny or Die using Soloway's world of Pfeffermans and the cast of characters surrounding the often dysfunctional family.Transparent‘s fourth season takes the Pfefferman family on a “spiritual and political journey as they dig deep into their family's history.” That includes a trip to Israel, where Maura is chosen to speak at a conference and makes a “startling discovery.”On the big screen, Landecker has completed production on A Kid Like Jake, an independent drama also starring Claire Danes and Jim Parsons, which is based on a celebrated Lincoln Center play about a couple trying to raise a 4-year-old-son who prefers to dress up as a princess instead of G.I. Joe. She most recently appeared opposite Salma Hayek and John Lithgow in Beatriz At Dinner.

On today's episode, we're (mostly) delighting in Miguel Arteta's 2017 dramedy, Beatriz at Dinner, starring Salma Hayek, Connie Britton, Chloë Sevigny, and Amy Landecker. Beatriz (Hayek) is a holistic massage therapist and Mexican immigrant circumstantially trapped in a palatial estate with her wealthy client and her husband's business partners. In Hot Probs, we discuss how normally, a Mike White script doesn't mess around, but this one does a little bit. Still, White does a commendable job depicting racist/classist micro-aggressions through the natural conversational flow of a Boomer dinner party. On the Lunchtime Poll, we reveal the bridge-too-far in dinner conversation that would prompt us to take a stand and ruin the night for everyone else. This is the last episode of Series 4, but we'll be back next week with a late holiday special!

Fiona Walsh Heinz redefines multi-tasking. Prior to our interview starting, she juggled making snacks and getting her 21-month-old daughter ready for an outing with dad so we could record WHILE growing another human inside her. NO. BIG. DEAL. It was inspiring to witness a producer, a mom, a pregnant woman…in her power. Originally from the Bay Area, Fiona has 14 years of experience in feature films, documentary and episodic television. She co–produced Chinonye Chukwu’s CLEMENCY which won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance 2019, Emerald Fennell’s PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN which premiered at Sundance 2020 and Miguel Arteta’s BEATRIZ AT DINNER which premiered at Sundance 2017. A fellow scorpio, we’ve had similar paths as physical producers earning our stripes in the trenches of indie filmmaking. She’s raw, she’s real, she drops many F bombs. She’s a gal after my own heart. Fiona gets into the nitty gritty of creative vs physical producing. She opens up about setting out to be a capital P producer and then finding herself in the physical producer track. She gives an extremely thorough explanation of how a line producer differs from the UPM (unit production manager) role; two jobs that are often done by the same person. Fiona also dishes on balancing motherhood with production and the advice she wishes she was given when she started out.

Selma Hayek and John Lithgow star as representatives of opposing views in the ongoing grand debates of American society: rich/poor, immigrant/native born, man/woman, minority/white, liberal/conservative, and so on in the 2017 Miguel Arteta-directed film, 'Beatriz at Dinner.' #BeatrizAtDinner tells the story of when massage therapist #Beatriz (#SalmaHayek) attends the dinner party of her wealthy clients Kathy (#ConnieBritton) and Grant (#DavidWarshofsky) after her car breaks down at their house. During the party, Beatriz finds out that Kathy and Grant's wealthy colleagues are involved in business practices that she finds repellent. In particular, she suspects that she has a past connection with Doug Strutt (#JohnLithgow), whose business has come under fire from environmental groups. As the night progresses, tensions escalate between Beatriz and Doug as the two butt heads over their opposing philosophies. Does the film deliver on its promise of being the first true film to deal with Americans ideological splinters in the age of Donald Trump? Anger about the current administration is what the producers of BEATRIZ AT DINNER are banking on to sell this so-called comedy.  Salma Hayek plays a demure, holistic healer thrown into a dinner party for rich capitalists by a mere coincidence.  What begins as a dialogue-driven piece of realistic commentary becomes a cage match of archetypes as Beatriz fends off the cavalier remarks of Doug (John Lithgow, standing in for Trump).  The characters are never really fleshed out as human beings, but you can tell politics is the point.  A weird climax and conclusion is out of step with the rest of the film.   You can download the podcast here by right-clicking on the hypertext link and choosing "save as", or you can use the convenient player attached to this post.
