For today's episode, Becky Wright is back! Last time we talked about formatting, we got a little carried away. This time, we focussed on 5 quick and easy formatting tips you can apply to your book right now. These are Becky's tips:STYLE - Different genres favour different styles, so have a look at some other books from your genre and see what they've done. For example, fantasy novels often have embellishments and illustrations, whereas horror novels have plainer, stricter styles.FRONT AND BACK MATTER - This includes your dedication, your copyright page, acknowledgements, About the Author, a Contents page, links to your social media accounts and your website, and your catalogue/the list of other books you've published. Note that there are some differences between paperbacks and ebooks. Again, have a look at other books in your genre to see what they've done.FONT AND CHAPTER HEADINGS - Keep your font to something simple like Times New Roman or Garamont. Becky's pro tip: don't use Arial - it's harder to read and looks unprofessional. You can vary your chapter headings, but make sure they complement your genre and don't use more than three throughout the book.WIDOWS AND ORPHANS - This is a simple click of a button that ensures your paragraphs stay together and you don't have any gaps at end bottom of your pages. How exactly to do this depends on the program you use to write, but an easy Google search will show you how to do this.PAGE NUMBERS - Getting your page numbers right is a must! Using section breaks and page breaks makes this much easier. Again, how exactly you do it depends on your writing program. We didn't set an action step today because the whole episode is one big action step. If you're new to formatting or intimidated by it after failed previous attempts, give Becky's 5 Quick and Easy Tips a go!***Come join The Writing Sparrow on its very own Facebook fan page or its very own Instagram account!Prefer to have the pros take formatting off your hands? If you don’t wind up loving these two, we can’t be friends any more.Today I’m bringing you my second ‘Real Womxn, Real Adventure’ feature episode (if you missed my first one with Mikayla Clarke, I hope you’ll go back and check it out at GGW Episode 8).CJ Mauger and Becky Wright started hiking together when they were in their mid-40s…. Yes, that's right, mid-40s. From an inauspicious first hike, the two have gone on to section hike the entire AT and thru-hike the Long Trail together, and they're not even close to being done yet. We talk about their different hiking styles and approaches to long-distance backpacking, and the heartbreak and redemption that has been 2020 so far. The honesty and hilarity just keep coming with these two.I happened to have recorded this conversation the same evening as the dumpster-fire-that-was-the-first-presidential-debate aired. As I reflected on that whole evening (after getting past wanting to smash my forehead against a brick wall), I was left with an overwhelming sense of gratitude for this podcast giving me a reason to connect with all these amazing humans. Whether you’re a 'destination' hiker or a 'journey' hiker, a hot food aficionado or a cold soak devotee on the trail, these are not earth shattering differences. But they are kind of a metaphor for what’s going on in the world right now - or should I say, what I WISH was going on in the world right now. Bex and CJ are constantly reworking and adjusting their hiking paces and practices, making compromises to benefit their collective good. They’ve spent the last decade discovering and refining what works best for themselves, while still making room to work together. Their common love of being outdoors, and spending days or weeks on the trail together, is elevated and supported, sometimes at the expense of their personal goals or comforts. If only....[sigh]A big shout-out to my coworker, Stacie, who introduced me to these inspiring real womxn, and a huge congratulations to Bex, who welcomed a new grandson on the day we recorded! Some helpful links and info of interest from our chat:GGW Mikayla Clarke episodeCarter DomeSection hiking the Appalachian TrailLong Trail - VermontMadonna PeakNüümü Poyo (John Muir Trail)DIY food dehydratingCnoc Water BagMontem Trekking Poles (the ones Bex couldn’t remember the name of)And thanks again to our hosting sponsor, Evans Notch Lodge!

We also talk pivoting to deliver services and support on-line during the pandemic, why new members are an untapped organising resource, what is strategic corporate research and why you should use it, why member engagement can't work in isolation – and nor can a digital strategy.  Plus news on or from Unionlearn, the GFTU, and Labour Research. One of our most engaging mustelids, the stoat is the subject of this Living World from 2003. Normally stoats are more often only seen in open countryside dashing across open ground and out of sight. Yet in North Yorkshire stoats have made their home closer to humans, within the ruins of Mount Grace Priory near Osmotherley. To find out more Lionel Kelleway headed to Europe's best preserved Carthusian Priory where in the company of stoat expert Robbie MacDonald, and Priory custodian Becky Wright they head off to find out more and in the course of their visit explain some of the fascinating and unique stoat biology and behaviour. In the years since this episode was first broadcast, our knowledge of these engaging mustelids has developed, allowing wildlife presenter Lindsey Chapman to revisit this Living World and gently update the story for today's audience. Becky Wright has been selling pottery since the mid-90s and always knew she could make pottery a career. However, in the early days fear was her constant companion. Afraid of money, fear of failure and a fear of success. Becky almost gave up on wholesale. Listen in to how she got over those challenges to create a life where she’s proud to be able to do what she loves to do. A little about Becky Becky Wright is a potter living and working in Southern Maine. She works with stoneware clay on the wheel to create three collections: Tableware, Kitchen and Home Décor. She’s greatly influenced by landscapes and skylines. These horizons and seascapes inspire her glazed works as she overlaps two colors to let the lines blur, creating intense color combinations with depth and alluring details. She was an elementary art teacher for 19 years but always sold pottery as a side way to earn money alongside her teaching career. In 2016, she left teaching to be a full-time studio artist. She lives in the house she grew up in with her studio in her home and her husband and three teen children. Listen in this episode as Becky shares her insights in what she’s learned through her growth and challenges. Thoughts from Becky I’ve learned to get help for things I’m really terrible at doing or I just don’t want to do. I know what I know and I know what I don’t know!
