“Everything started because somebody started it. Somebody felt that need...Of course we can't conquer the world—we're not capable. But we can all do our part and contribute." Growing up in India, Pallavi Pande spent her childhood eating her meals off of banana leaves—a memory she cherished so much that she wanted to share it with her children…and the rest of the world. Today, Pallavi is the BIPOC mamapreneur and founder of Dtocs, a company that crafts sustainable single use tableware from fallen palm leaves. Recognizing the environmental impact of traditional disposable tableware, Pallavi drew from her Indian heritage and established Dtocs in 2019 to offer a greener alternative for both households and events. Beyond her innovative products, Pallavi is deeply committed to social causes, leveraging Dtocs to support community upliftment, women's empowerment, and education for underserved children. Dtocs stands in a testament to Pilates dedication, not only to offering a sustainable dining alternative, but also to making a meaningful impact on society, one palm leaf plate at a time. Tune in and hear our conversation with Pallavi about building a seven figure brand, using Amazon to scale her business, and how she makes sure to prioritize flexibility and independence.  What we talk about:   Pallavi's 3 P's: party, planet, people (03:14) Managing a supply chain during the pandemic (08:13) Pallavi's advice for fellow BIPOC female entrepreneurs (14:24) The importance of community for entrepreneurs (16:07) Experimenting with marketing and ads (20:13) Non-dilutive grants (22:09) Connect with Pallavi: LinkedIn Instagram Dtocs Members of our Entreprenista League get access to live Office Hours with top founders that have been on our show! GoSili was founded in 2006 based on the principal that it was time to create a cultural shift away from toxic and excessive plastics. Founders, Giuliana Schawb and Stacey Feeley believed there was a better alternative to plastics, so they began creating stylish, incredibly durable, 100% nontoxic silicone products with the philosophy that it was time to make the “basics” better. They first founded the award-winning all silicone children's brand, Silikids of which GoSili is the parent company. Today, the company has expanded from kids products to products for the whole family and more. GoSili continues to bring innovative silicone products to market and has since been dedicated to building a social movement away from unsustainable plastic wares by providing the alternative to them. Stacey joins Justin to discuss this fast-growing brand.

Sue Pryke's work is concerned with functionality and the exploration of tactile surfaces to create tableware. Sue uses slip casting as a vehicle to produce domestic ware which is a nod to an industrial method of making, but use it in a craft setting to make pared-back contemporary ware that industry would find difficult to produce. Sue is inspired by the everyday and the ordinary, tactility and utility, material qualities, and the interaction we have with objects. Small details and preferences which reflect the intuitive decision making we all make on a daily basis when choosing what cup to take from the cupboard for a cup of tea.

Today, she's brought that experience to the western world through her business, making tableware from naturally fallen palm leaves.   Tune in this week to discover Pallavi Pande's story of building a mission-driven business constructed on a foundation of nostalgia. Erin Levine, the resource recovery manager at World Centric, a maker of compostable packaging and tableware, returns to the show to share ideas about a low-waste holiday season and discuss the evolution of composting in California. The holidays are a time for family, community, faith, and fun, but they are also some of the most wasteful days of the year -- Americans toss more than a third of the food grown annually. Erin recently contributed an article to Earth911, Tips for Planning a Sustainable Holiday Meal. We'll her ideas about reducing waste and leftover food that too often ends up in a landfill, where they generate 14.5% of U.S. methane emissions, a greenhouse gas that warms the atmosphere many times faster than CO2. Erin last talked with us in March, when the state's mandatory composting law, SB 1383, or the Short-lived Climate Pollutant Reduction Strategy, had just been put into practice. We'll get an update about progress, how it is changing the options for Californians, and progress toward clear definitions of compostability for bioplastics and fiber-based packaging. World Centric has worked to eliminate PFAS, or "forever chemicals," from its fiber packaging and is introducing bamboo- and bagasse-based tableware, which will make the product of industrial composting programs safe for use in agriculture and home gardens. California's statewide composting progress has been slow because of the lack of industrial composting capacity, which creates the higher temperatures necessary to break down many materials. In this bitesize decoding, a conservative columnist, a religious icon carver, and a tortured ex-psychologist walk into a Daily Wire studio and try to hash out some solution of the meta-meaning-crisis. In an astounding twist it turns out it involves embracing traditional Christianity. Who could have guessed? Join us on Jordan's religious powered rocket as we consider the esoteric mystery of tableware, how fiction is probably true, and try to uncover what's the deal with atheist materialists anyway? In a nutshell, it's the same old drum that's being beaten: it only seems like science does better than religion at explaining things, because religion trumps science because God does causality in mysterious non-material ways. Maybe ways that have something to do with symbols and meaning or whatever. Ho hum - this is why it's a mini-decoding and not a full episode. It's more than OK to skip this one if you feel you've already got a handle on Jordan and Pageau's jam. But honestly, it's maybe all worth it to hear Pageau's explain 'vertical causation'. Try to follow the argument there, we dare you. Along the way Matt and Chris will also teach us valuable lessons like how to deal with road rage bullies or aggressive bull sharks and how if you really want to be a Christian it's ok to go to mass. I don't think there is one thing on her whole website that the children haven't loved and I think it is an absolute must for any parent. I'm just waiting for a book now! We talked about everything from apple cider vinegar and no-cook fruit purees to fussy eaters and delicious and nutritious snacks." Leo Bamford.    Email us at info@mybaba.com Follow us on Instagram @mybabainsta and @mybabagram Show notes Show notes Le Creuset Stainless Steel Rectangular Roasting Tin This is an investment, but it's the best roasting tray I have tried. Perfect for roasts and tray bakes it makes one tray cooking easy this Summer  Daylesford Double Rectangular Bento Box This is the second summer I am using these adorable bento boxes for kids' snacks and lunches on the go. They are brilliant for picnics too, in my opinion, food always tastes better outdoors. So let's take advantage of the Summer months and spend more time eating al fresco. I always find it's a great way to bring some fun and adventure to meal times with my own kids.  Blafre Stainless Steel Drinking Flasks  I am not usually without them for both the kids and me. These are our go-to water bottles at home, they have lasted brilliantly and the stainless steel bottle keeps drinks cool.  You buy the bottle end separately and there are plenty of colours to choose from.  Sophie Conran's Cream Floret Tableware My current obsession is Sophie Conran's floret collection. The beautiful bowls come in different sizes and I have filled my kitchen with them: for lemons, tomatoes and onions. I love to have ingredients to hand to inspire my cooking.  David Mellor's Porcelain Children's Tableware  A recent buy, but I love this classic design from 1975 it's timeless. I have a drawer of kids' plates and bowls and these sets are really useful and well-loved.  Wean Green Storage Cubes The best storage containers I have tried, I especially like these mini cubes. They were fantastic when I was weaning my children, but I have used them ever since. For leftovers and odds and ends that you want to turn into snacks, they are brilliant. The containers themselves are glass, I bought mine on Amazon and they have just lasted brilliantly.  Papier's Recipe Books  It is always a good time to start a family cookbook, writing down all of your favourite recipes. I love the designs from Papier, their hardback notebooks are beautifully made. I am in process of cooking through all my mother's recipes, she sadly passed away in 2021. Cooking the recipes of my childhood helps me feel closer to her and process my grief. I hope to write them down for my children and pass on the story of our family through food.  Kitchen Aid Muffin Tray Found my muffin tray in stock and it is a simple one but I prefer the aluminised steel finish to others. This is brilliant for baking, but you can also turn it into a sharing tray for children and it will double up as the perfect snack tray! If You Care Unbleached Parchment Baking Roll I cook with these baking sheets almost every day and they save a mountain of washing up. For me, they are one of my kitchen must-haves.  Rukmini Iyer's brilliant Roasting Tin Series  Such a clever concept and beautifully written, with delicious combinations. Rukmini will give you plenty of inspiration for one tray family cooking of which I am a huge fan.  What is My Baba?
