After focusing on scalability and profitability Ben Schmidt's Pittsburg-based Roadbotics, which provides image analysis of road infrastructure, was acquired by Michelin in 2022.

The Tertiary Education Union says Massey University is being short sighted and damaging with plans to cut even more staff. The University's proposal would see 40 full time staff axed from its college of humanities and social sciences. Massey was already planning other cuts, as it faces a $50 million loss this year. Pleas from Massey University's science faculty seem to have fallen on deaf ears.  The university is forecasting a loss of more than $50 million, well up from last year's deficit of around $8.8 million.  It plans to slash around 100 science jobs and stop teaching engineering at Albany.  Tertiary Education Union organiser Ben Schmidt told Kate Hawkesby that Vice-Chancellor Jan Thomas seems determined to push through with it.  He says she needs to slow down, listen to staff and work for better funding, maintaining these services and access to education.  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Last week Massey University approved the proposed job cuts across admin jobs as well as some in the health and science department.  In the announcement Vice chancellor Jan Thomas called for another 125 voluntary redundancies across staff members.  The Tertiary Education Union where disappointed by this announcement. Rawan spoke with organiser Ben Schmidt about what these extra redundancies mean, why these issues have occurred and why the recent announcement of more government money is not solving the problem. 

Another university appears to be preparing to make further staff cuts. Massey University is working to formalise policies to axe courses with low enrolments, and eliminate duplication of courses across its three campuses. Professor Rat Catchers are apparently a new thing at Massey University. In an email the varsity's told staff they're responsible for disposing of dead rodents and vermin in traps that are in the buildings they work in. And it's also their job to lock and load the traps with yummy peanut butter. It follows on from cuts to non-academic staff including maintenance and campus trade people. How can artificial intelligence help strengthen roads and infrastructure? On this episode of Disruptive CEO Nation, RoadBotics co-founder and President, Dr. Ben Schmidt shares his unlikely journey to revolutionize the way local governments assess and maintain their roads. Mortuary school is challenging. We chat with educator Ben Schmidt of Worsham College of Mortuary Science and author of the new Restorative Art Textbook - Creating Natural Form.

In this episode, we’re joined by Kelly Heekin and Ben Schmidt, the co-founders of premium hydration beverage brand Hoist, who discussed their strategy for mainstreaming a niche concept. Founded in 2009, Hoist was developed to be a more palatable version of Pedialyte, which in recent years has attracted a following among adults who use the products as rapid-hydration recovery drinks. Heekin and Schmidt said that while Hoist was ahead of its time, they were willing to be patient and wait for the market to catch up to the opportunity. “To be successful in this industry, you have to have the staying power and the ability to adapt,” Schmidt said. “It’s not going to be an overnight success, that’s for sure.” The co-founders explained how they incubated the brand for years in their backyard of Cincinnati, which allowed them to learn from mistakes before embarking on a national launch. That strategy is bearing fruit: Hoist is currently available in 10,000 retail locations across the U.S. As part of our interview, Heekin and Schmidt spoke about the genesis of Hoist and how they communicated their vision to stakeholders. They also explained why they haven’t taken any outside capital and how the brand has won placement and a loyal following at military retail stores. Steve Cooper talks with actor Peter Breitmayer. Peter started his professional acting career at Dudley Riggs BraveNew Workshop and worked in numerous professional Theatres in the Minneapolis area over the next eight years, did dozens of OC and VO Commercials, and landed roles in several Hollywood produced films shooting in the state including Drop Dead Fred, Jingle All the Way, Larry Nordic and The Stranger Within. He moved to LA in 1996 and has since worked regularly in television, film, commercials and VO, his most recent substantial role being Lt. Ben Schmidt in the Fargo series. Other recent notable roles were in Austin Film Fest winner Coffee, Kill Boss, NCIS, A Serious Man, The Changeling, Greys Anatomy, The Middle. Most people recognize him as the A-Nother Insurance Company idiot, Bill, in the Progressive Insurance campaign. He also continued his stage career, acting in award winning productions in LA as well as touring Nationally and to Dublin, Ireland with the long running hit show Triple Espresso.
