A very common question we are asked as it relates to functional medicine testing is how medications and supplements affect results. Although we can’t always know the influences, based on physiology and some literature we can make educated guesses. Genova never recommends that any patient discontinue medically necessary medications for the purposes of testing – that decision is up to the ordering clinician. But it might be helpful to discuss what to expect when interpreting results. My guest for this episode is Aswath Damodaran. Aswath is a Professor of Finance at the Stern School of Business at New York University (Kerschner Family Chair in Finance Education). Calling Aswath a Professor is a bit like calling the Sistine Chapel a church. He is a star in his field and one of the most influential business professors in the world. He has taught on the TRIUM program from its start and is consistently rated as one of its top professors. In this episode we discus his most recent book, Narrative and Numbers: The Value of Stories in Business. Aswath argues that, “Stories without numbers are just fairy tales and numbers without stories to back them up are exercises in financial modelling.” To value a business accurately, Aswath argues, you must understand and value a business’s narrative and tie that story to the relevant underlying value drivers. It’s super handy because it’s pretty simple to use and is applicable for tons of things—there are a lot of interesting processes that boil down to “events that happen in time or space.” This episode is a quick introduction to the distribution, and then a focus on two of our favorite everyday applications: using the Poisson distribution to identify supernovas and study army deaths from horse kicks.
