Is there a Biden Doctrine? What did it achieve? Where did it fail? The president sought to reset U.S. foreign policy after the unilateralism of the Trump years. Biden spoke of a global battle pitting democracies versus autocracies, and he reinforced U.S. alliances in Europe and Asia. Presidents from Truman to Reagan to George W. Bush saw their names attached to actionable ideas, i.e. containment of Communism, but whatever the name of the strategy U.S. foreign policy since 1945 has been designed to maintain primacy. In this episode, historian Jeffrey Engel delves into decades of doctrines and Biden's successes and failures. Additional reading: What Was the Biden Doctrine? by Jessica T. Mathews in Foreign Affairs
SERIES 2 EPISODE 136: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: What President Biden should say in The State of the Union tonight is, to declare, simply and directly, that of all the threats to the United States of America the greatest of these is Donald John Trump and thus tonight I am declaring The Biden Doctrine. And in sum, my fellow Americans, the Biden Doctrine is this: we must save our country from madness and vengeance and hate and racism and dictatorship, and to save our country from these evils, we must metaphorically kick the ever-loving shit out of Donald Trump. Instead, the White House expects Biden to deliver a traditional speech that will re-set the campaign. The problem is, it'll be designed for a major event in the life of the nation called The State of the Union that… doesn't exist any more. 53 million people watched Bill Clinton's tension-filled post-Lewinsky State of the Union in 1998. That was 20 percent of the population. Last year? Biden had 27 million viewers and not a whole lot of streamers. The other problem is, 538 researched Presidential Approval before and after each SOTU since 1978 and the average change in approval is a microscopic 1.9%. The all-time highest was Clinton's 10% gain after he stared down the Republicans post-Lewinsky. If you really do think this is your last chance to fundamentally re-set the race, then gimme The Biden Doctrine. What IS the Biden Doctrine about? The Biden Doctrine is about the greatest threat facing this nation. And what IS the greatest threat to the nation? It's Trump. It's Trump's Cult. It's Trump's madness. It's Trump's racism. It's Trump's desire to be a dictator. It's Trump's next coup. Do it. If they build statues to President Joseph Robinette Biden Junior it will be for saving this nation from Donald Trump. Twice. There is no reason to back away from the easiest to understand accomplishment. There is no reason to hide from what even HE says is the reason he IS running again: to stop Trump and save representative government. Pound the son of a bitch in the ground, like you did at Independence Hall in September '22. You'll get ten percent approval growth just for THAT. And don't forget to join me live on YouTube and Twitch right after the speech for the Countdown With Keith Olbermann State of the Union Post-Game Show. Biden starts about 9 ET, I should start around 10. Be there. Aloha. B-Block (22:59) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Bill Hemmer says because they cut away from Trump's "victory" speeches CNN and MSNBC should drop "news" from their names. Hilariously, last month Fox News... cut away from Trump's "victory" speeches. Politico and 60,000 other news organizations devoted space to a Democratic presidential candidate who got exactly 51 votes on Tuesday. And Elon Musk a) lied about Biden bringing in foreigners to vote b) lied when he called it "treason" c) probably lied about not helping Trump with financing and d) on the other hand, a candidate he opposed this week won by 2 to 1. C-Block (33:13) THURSDAYS WITH THURBER: They're all brilliantly written. But "The Car We Had To Push" is brilliantly written to be read aloud. One I've never read you before, from his classic book about his childhood in Columbus, Ohio: "My Life And Hard Times."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today on Home Front: Hopeful for a hostage deal, but what are the costs? The practical implications of a lengthy ceasefire The Biden Doctrine disregards the realities on the ground
Our Committee on the Present Danger: China conducted a fascinating webinar last week on the disastrous Biden Doctrine of treating America's enemies better than its friends. A case in point is U.S. policy towards Israel. Notwithstanding Biden's professions of support for the Jewish State, his administration is actively working to overthrow the government of Benjamin Netanyahu and assure an Israeli defeat in Gaza. One of the world's most astute Mideast analysts, Caroline Glick, notes that Team Biden is not only insisting that Israel cannot win there. It's working to fracture Netanyahu's unity government, precipitate elections to replace it and reward the Palestinian jihadists for their October 7 invasion by giving them a state in Gaza and the West Bank from which to finish off the Jews. That would be disastrous for America, too, and embolden all those who seek our destruction. This is Frank Gaffney.
Joe Biden has stood on its head a proud moniker of American warriors: He epitomizes no better enemy and no worse friend. That deplorable distinction has been earned by, among other things: his surrender of Afghanistan; his greenlighting of a “minor Russian incursion” into Ukraine; his appeasement of Iran and undermining of Israel; and his months-long refusal to retaliate decisively for Iranian proxies' attacks on U.S. personnel. Now, immediately after the Taiwanese electorate voted for freedom over enslavement by Communist China, Biden announced, the United States does not support Taiwan's independence. That comment – surely being amplified by two former U.S. officials now in Taipei – rejects the de facto status quo and will encourage Chinese aggression. The Biden Doctrine of treating enemies better than friends ensures we'll dangerously have many more, and greatly emboldened, foes and far fewer and less reliable allies. This is Frank Gaffney.
A “Biden Doctrine” has emerged. It is characterized by a single word: Surrender. It turns out that Joe Biden's humiliating surrender of Afghanistan was not an exception; it has become the rule. He has surrendered our southern border to dangerous cartels and to Chinese Communists and jihadists exploiting it. Biden has surrendered to Iran's mullahs by enriching them for taking American hostages and building the Bomb. He's also surrendered to their proxies who have lately attacked U.S. troops over a dozen times by refusing to retaliate or otherwise act effectively to prevent further assaults. Joe Biden is even coercing our allies in Israel to surrender. That would inevitably be the effect of his intensifying campaign to prevent the Jewish State's decisive defeat of Hamas in Gaza. The Biden Doctrine is undermining our security and emboldening our enemies. It must be repudiated now. This is Frank Gaffney.

The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 1: According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, the United States will expand its troop presence in Taiwan—specifically to train Taiwanese forces with weapon systems to prevent Chinese invasion of the island. What is the Biden Doctrine? Chinese leader Xi Jinping is planning to meet with Russian leader Vladmir Putin in Moscow in the coming months—alarmingly, China is considering providing the Russian military with lethal military aid. Are we moving closer to direct conflict with China? As the Biden Administration sends troops to Taiwan and continues to send military equipment and financial assistance to Ukraine, is the executive branch exceeding its constitutional authority? While appearing on Fox News, Senator Mike Lee implored European allies to “pony up” money to support Ukraine's defense against Russian predations, explaining that the United States shouldn't be forced to unilaterally foot the bill. On Tuesday, the United States Supreme Court heard oral arguments for Gonzalez v. Google LLC. According to Jess Bravin of The Wall Street Journal writes, “Supreme Court justices reacted skeptically…to claims that YouTube parent Google LLC could be sued for algorithms that automatically recommended extremist recruiting videos” in a legal case that tests “the liability of internet providers for material posted online.” Does Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act shield social media companies from liability for “content uploaded to their platforms”? During arguments, Justice Clarence Thomas compared YouTube's platform to a telephone company—explaining: “If you call information and ask for al-Baghdadi's number and they give it to you, I don't see how that's aiding and abetting.”

You can read the research study at: https://www.mercatus.org/research/working-papers/indoor-vaccine-mandates-and-covid-19 5:25pm- Did NATO just post the worst tweet ever? 5:35pm- While speaking at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa on Wednesday, Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) explained that “fentanyl isn't the only poison” harming America—warning that the victim mentality being pushed by politicians is also incredibly dangerous. 5:50pm- Vice President Kamala Harris is talking about Venn diagrams…again. How does she manage to weave Venn diagrams into every conversation she has?
The Biden administration's foreign-policy agenda during its first two years in office has been marked by Russia's war in Ukraine, increased tensions with China, the botched U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, and several other pressing issues. At roughly the halfway point of his first term, it's a good time to ask: How has U.S. President Joe Biden performed on foreign policy? Is there an emerging Biden Doctrine? FP Live host Ravi Agrawal spoke to experts on both sides of the aisle for answers. Nadia Schadlow is a former deputy national security advisor in the Trump administration and now serves as a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute. Stephen Wertheim is a historian of U.S. foreign policy and a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. The two disagree on how to assess Biden but probably not in the way you might expect.
Sam and Emma (in her triumphant return!) are joined by Matt Duss, Visiting Scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, to discuss his recent piece in the New Republic co-authored with Steven Wertheim, "A Better Biden Doctrine." Then, they're joined by Sarah Miller, Executive Director and founder of the American Economic Liberties Project, to discuss the Biden Administration's recent decision to limit corporations' abilities to use non-compete clauses on their workers. As President Biden enters the third year of his presidency, his only obvious foreign policy success lies in Ukraine, where U.S. and NATO support has proved decisive in stopping -- at least so far -- Russia's war of aggression. Mr. Biden has framed his foreign policy by saying the U.S. is in a global contest pitting democracies versus autocracies. Is that a Biden Doctrine? In this episode, we examine the history of presidential doctrines, and The Washington Times' reporters Guy Taylor and Ben Wolfgang talk about the foreign policy challenges that lie ahead for the Biden administration as 2023 unfolds.
Live from the no panic zone—I'm Steve Gruber—I am America's Voice— I am a radical MAGA American extremist— I have wild fringe ideas—like loving the Constitution—and embracing other insane ideas like the Freedom of Speech! I am the guy Joe Biden has been warning you about—and I'm good with that! Here are three big things you need to know right now— ONE— Governor Newsome has signed the death warrant for dozens—and maybe hundreds of fast food restaurants in California—by interfering once again with business— TWO— The UK has a new Prime Minister—and she is being compared to the Iron Lady—well sort of—she is being called Margaret Thatcher light—which give me mixed feelings— THREE— I took me a long time to figure it out but I think I have. Joe Biden mumbles so much and a lot of what he has to say is incoherent— so we just misunderstood what he is saying. You see for example, for the longest time, I thought—in fact millions of Americans thought that Joe Biden was saying he wanted to unite the country. What he was actually saying was— he wanted to ignite the country. Which so far, he has been very successful at doing— he wants to burn the place down. It's all perfectly clear to me now. I mean you look at all the policies that are clearly designed to damage this country to the point of no return that have been rolled out by Joe Biden and his dementia addled brain. Last week's fiery speech in Philadelphia was the pinnacle of dividing America—he could have said many things that could have been positive— sadly he said none of them. Joe Biden has never actually stood for anything but has been very skilled in turning elected office into a gold mine—not just for himself but for his entire family—including his shady brother Jim and his junkie and hooker loving son Hunter— And while this is going on—America is adrift with a weak economy, an open border and a foreign policy that nobody could actually define. What is the Biden Doctrine? Anyone? Well now—we have two major developments; one that will almost certainly damage the American economy further—and the other that will create a domino effect on food, energy and just about everything else—creating shortages like we have never seen here— First in the face of Joe Biden appalling energy policies—OPEC announced yesterday that it will be cutting oil production beginning in October—the announcement already pushed the price of Brent Crude up yesterday by 3.6% — add to that the further reduction of Russian energy to Europe and the EU is facing a bleak winter ahead—the nations of Europe have already seen a cost of living explosion that is causing major political backlash in several nations— Here at home—global demand spiking—while Joe Biden is shutting off American energy at every turn—means the prices for electricity—gasoline and everything else are almost certain to spike as we head into the heart of winter too— Another developing story—the potential for 115,000 railroad workers to walk off the job shortly—yeah let that sink in for a moment—at a time—when major rail lines have been reducing the amount of freight that can moved because of a variety of negative factors—a strike could accelerate increases in energy cost—BUT more frightening—at a time when a war on farming has been undertaken by the Green New Dealers and their socialist allies worldwide—freight trains coming to a halt in America could easily create serious food shortages in the very near future— In mid-August President Biden convened the Presidential Emergency Board—which has since issued its recommendation of a 22% increase in pay over 5 years—and back-dating it to 2020—BUT the workers have balked at the deal—saying it falls far short of what they need—especially in view of dramatic spikes in inflation—plus skyrocketing health care costs— This is a major problem for Biden and his people—the rail industry is heavily unionized—AND there are 13 separate unions involved—ranging in size from several hundred—to tens of thousands— There has not been a major rail strike in The United States since the early 1990's—and one now—could not come at a worse time for the country—or the Democrats that are already facing stiff headwinds in the mid-term elections— A national rail strike would have major economic impacts almost immediately— The 13 unions that were once united have now fragmented—have been in negotiations since 2019—and the window prohibiting a strike ends on September 16th under the Railway Labor Act— Two of the major sticking points—are sick time—believe it or not, Railroad workers get ZERO sick days—and Joe Bidens Board refused to even consider that point—and the very strict attendance policies—both are deal killers to the unions it sounds like— I wonder what transportation Secretary Little Petey Buttigieg will do about that? I mean there were 6,000 cancelled flights just on Sunday—another problem he promised to take care of— By comparison a rail strike will be far more devastating to Little Pete and Dementia Joe, neither of whom seem to have any idea how to deal with a crisis— The last year I can find reliable reporting—Railroads accounted for about $300 Billion in economic activity—and again with the U-S already in a mild recession—this kind of disruption to already fragile supply chains could have a devastating domino effect— But don't worry I am sure it was top of mind while Joe Biden was visiting ice cream shops and beaches over the long Labor Day weekend—and how ironic is that—big Labor is on a collision course with a very big strike—and the administration is nowhere to be seen— These are many of the reasons—it's clear Joe Biden really meant to say—he would ignite the country—not unite the country

The recent story of a young Ohio girl—a rape victim who received an abortion—has taken on a new horrifying dimension. The revelation that the alleged rapist is an illegal immigrant now raises questions about how far the Biden administration and their allies are willing to go to protect the open borders experiment from scrutiny and accountability, no matter the human toll. This episode explores the government's deliberate immigration policies that enable and protect criminal behavior, victimizing both American citizens and new arrivals. As observers in Washington look back at the Biden administration's first year and prepare for its forthcoming national security and defense strategies, the Net Assessment crew debates the virtues of muddling through. Does the Biden team have a grand plan? Does it need one? And are errors of omission worse than those of commission? Chris, Melanie, and Zack debate recent articles on muddling through by Josh Rovner, Richard Fontaine, and Anne-Marie Slaughter. Chris gives an attaboy to Tom Brady, since he hasn't won enough already. Melanie issues both a grievance and an attaboy to Newt Gingrich. And Zack hails the wonders of easily available satellite imagery. Biden's approach to foreign policy, the crisis of Australian democracy, and 80 years since Pearl Harbour
What should sensible Republicans do now? That's the question Bill Kristol has been wrestling with since the nomination of Donald Trump - and it's not going away. A veteran of Republican politics, scholarship and journalism, Bill's view is that for the foreseeable future, the Republican party at a national level seems like a lost cause. The best hope is to build new spaces in the political center, and work with moderate Democrats, like Joe Biden, to actually, you know, govern the country, keep democracy safe, and all that good stuff. But Biden's performance so far gives cause for concern. We talk about Bill's own journey from working as a teen for Patrick Moynihan to the H.W. Bush White House and beyond; what Liz Cheney will likely have to do next; the warped politics of the Covid vaccination campaign; the bungled exit from Afghanistan and troubling signs of more isolationist thinking on both sides of the aisle; and the best and worst plausible scenarios for U.S. politics over the next three years. Bill Kristol William Kristol is editor-at-large of The Bulwark, having been a founder of The Weekly Standard, and is a regular guest on leading political commentary shows. Read his Bulwark columns here. He also has his own podcast, Conversations with Bill Kristol. From 1985 to 1993, Kristol served as chief of staff to Education Secretary William Bennett in the Reagan Administration and as chief of staff to Vice President Dan Quayle in the George H. W. Bush administration. Before coming to Washington, Kristol taught politics at the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard University. Bill tweets from twitter.com/billkristol. Kristolisms I referred to a few of Bill's Bulwark columns in particular: American Conservatism, b. 1955, d. 2020? A Tale of Three Possible Outcomes Springtime for Moderate Democrats The Birth of the Biden Doctrine? Also Mentioned Michael Oakeshott, in his essay "On Being Conservative" (1956), wrote that: "To be conservative ... is to prefer the familiar to the unknown, to prefer the tried to the untried, fact to mystery, the actual to the possible, the limited to the unbounded, the near to the distant, the sufficient to the superabundant, the convenient to the perfect, present laughter to utopian bliss." Bill mentioned the rise of “affective polarization”. This paper is a good place to start on that topic. I mentioned Arthur Brooks on when our opponents become our enemies. See his oped here. Chris, Melanie, and Zack debate whether there is a "Biden doctrine" and if so, what exactly it is. They identify two separate threads in Biden's thinking and that of his team — one idealist vision for global democracy, and a second more pragmatic and restrained approach. These diverging views do not, at the moment, appear to have yet been resolved. Chris also questions George W. Bush on the 20th anniversary of Sept. 11, Melanie weighs in on the Met Gala, and Zack supports expanding Selective Service registration. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken testified yesterday before House lawmakers and will do the same with Senate ones today, ostensibly about Biden's humiliating strategic defeat in Afghanistan. The unmistakable leitmotif, however, is the nature and conduct of this administration more generally. More often than not, as with the Afghan debacle, the beneficiaries are our enemies. Communist China's Xi, global jihadistists, Vladimir Putin and other thugs are delighted with what the Biden Team evidently considers to be its job: the “managed decline” of the United States. Unfortunately, what we are experiencing is increasingly our nation's unmanaged decline – a reckless, pell-mell, even Marxist takedown of Americans' security, institutions, freedoms and prosperity. Joe Biden, Tony Blinken and their ilk are upending the strategy Ronald Reagan so successfully implemented. Today, it seems “We lose, they win” is the hallmark of this appalling presidency. Enough already. This is Frank Gaffney.
In this show, Andrew Sola and his guest, Prof. Steven Durand, discuss different theoretical approaches to understanding US foreign policy and international security 20 years after 9/11. Topics include (1) realpolitik or neo-realism: the view that the world is an anarchical and amoral competition among nations; (2) Graham Allison's critique of the assumption that governments make rational decisions; (3) James Dobbins' analysis of successful and unsuccessful approaches to nation building. Next, they discuss the war in Afghanistan, including (4) the role of humanitarian intervention in US foreign policy; and (5) the influence of domestic politics on foreign policy. The show concludes with (6) an assessment of President Biden's decision to end the war in Afghanistan as well as (7) a discussion of the Biden Doctrine.
On this episode of the DefAero Report Daily Podcast, sponsored by Bell, Michael Herson of American Defense International discusses the bipartisan infrastructure measure, Democrat's $3.5 trillion spending package and House-Senate defense markups, debt ceiling and lessons learned in the two decades since 9/11; and Lisa Curtis, the director of the Indo-Pacific security program at the Center for a New American Security discusses the Biden doctrine, working with the Taliban to advance US interests in Afghanistan and what's worked and what hasn't over the past 20 years since al Qaida's attack on the United States with Defense & Aerospace Report Editor Vago Muradian.
On our post-Labor Day podcast, editor Jeff Dufour chats with White House correspondent George Condon and national security correspondent Cristina Maza about whether the U.S. can ever have normal diplomatic relations with the Taliban and what the "Biden Doctrine" is shaping up to be. The team also discusses Biden's recent political struggles ... and whether the Texas abortion law can possibly come to the rescue of him and the Democrats.

Our town hall with Congressman Adam Smith. As the 117th Congress has been in session for 100 days, it's a good time to check in with him on a range of issues, including his assessment of President Biden's performance in office thus far, democracy reform, income inequality, and more. And then, in his capacity as the chair of the House Armed Services Committee, we talk about Afghanistan, the defense budget, and what we be shaping up to be a Biden Doctrine.
As GZERO World kicks off its third season, Ian Bremmer is examining the state of U.S. response and recovery six months into the pandemic. Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) joins to discuss what Congress has done to provide economic relief to businesses and people impacted by the unexpected and unprecedented downturn, and next steps still to come. He also takes jabs at GOP Congressional colleagues who he says have “followed (Trump's) lead rather than science.” Bremmer and Coons also discuss reports of a Russian bounty plot to pay for the murders of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan. Coons tells the story of 43-year-old Marine Corps Staff Sergeant Christopher Slutman who died in a 2019 roadside bombing alleged to be a part of that plot. The two also dive into election security and the 2020 presidential race. Coons offers details of “The Biden Doctrine,” what U.S. foreign policy could look like if Biden wins. He also discusses lessons learned from Sec. Hillary Clinton's failed 2016 campaign.
