When Love & Beliefs Collide: Repairing or Releasing a Friendship

Here's an uncomfortable or even painful experience many people are having right now. Losing a friendship over differing political views or fundamental values. It hurts…but what if it's also a window into something deeper? In today's cultural climate, the divide between people often goes far beyond a simple disagreement or differing opinions. It can reveal a far deeper truth: when values clash, friendships can break. But what does that rupture reveal about how we relate, how we build trust, and how we stay open in moments that hurt? Most of us are taught to manage difficult emotions by defending ourselves or retreating from discomfort. But those very emotions, the anger, sadness, and disappointment, can be an invitation to connect more honestly. Do we avoid the messy middle and settle for predictability? Or do we choose curiosity, get in the pool, and learn to swim, again and again? In this episode, we talk about the micro-moves that make or break our relationships. We explore how trust is built not through agreement, but through presence, tossing the metaphorical ball, and choosing openness in the face of rejection.   Things You'll Learn In This Episode  -The art of the toss There are two options in relationships: meet each other with presence, or let the ball drop. Why is the metaphor of tossing and catching the heartbeat of every real relationship? -Reconnecting and recommitting  Why are people so quick to discard people when there's a disagreement instead of working through it? -Curiosity over control What happens when we stop predicting and start wondering? How do we replace defensiveness with genuine curiosity? -The end of performative friendship How do you know when someone's no longer “in the pool” with you? And what does it mean to choose integrity over rescuing a relationship that won't meet you halfway?     About Your Hosts Katie Hendricks, Ph.D., BC-DMT, is a pioneer in body intelligence and conscious loving with over 40 years of experience. The Fear-Driven Urge to Fix and How to Get Past It

Sometimes, the danger isn't real, but our bodies still act like it is. You're stuck in traffic, someone you love is upset, or a friend doesn't text back, and suddenly, you're spiraling.  Your heart races, your thoughts scramble, and before you know it, you're either fixing, fleeing, or shutting down.  What's happening? In a world that constantly pushes us to stay in control, we forget how to stay connected, to ourselves, to others, and to the moment.  But our bodies remember. They hold wisdom, intuition, and the capacity to guide us, if we're willing to listen.  When we learn to pause, feel, and trust, we unlock a deeper kind of safety that doesn't depend on circumstances. In this episode, we unpack the fear-driven urge to fix, the stories our minds create to avoid discomfort, and the deep wisdom available when we drop into presence.  Through stories of hypervigilance, childhood coping strategies, and even traffic-induced meltdowns, we explore how embodiment opens up more freedom, clarity, and connection than control ever could.   Things You'll Learn In This Episode  -The fixing instinct Why do we leap into action when someone else is struggling, and what are we really trying to avoid? -Hypervigilance reframed What if your childhood survival skills could become your greatest gifts, once you learn how to work with them instead of against them? -Your body gets there first How can checking in with your body (instead of your thoughts) stop fear from spiraling and bring you back to your own inner wisdom? -The contagion of calm What happens when we meet tension with grounded presence, and how does that ripple outward to others?     About Your Hosts Katie Hendricks, Ph.D., BC-DMT, is a pioneer in body intelligence and conscious loving with over 40 years of experience. Psychedelic Presence: How to Heal the Places Words Can't Reach

There are many ways we try to heal. Therapy, meditation, breathwork, movement, and mindset work - just to name a few.  These paths are powerful, transformative, and often life-changing. But sometimes, despite all the tools and effort, there are places within us that remain untouched, places our intellect can't quite reach. We're exploring one such threshold, where healing stops being something we do and becomes something that happens to us at a cellular level.  Where transformation drops from the head into the body through the quiet, mystical intelligence of mushrooms. Journeying with and surrendering to mushrooms isn't an escape from reality, but rather a deeper entry into it. That's what we've experienced.  In this episode, we share our personal experiences with psilocybin (aka “journey mushrooms”) in a candid, responsible, and deeply moving conversation about transformation, play, healing, and the way wisdom often arrives when we least expect it.   Things You'll Learn In This Episode  -Change doesn't have to be hard We've been told transformation is painful and slow. But what if that's just an old story? What if mushrooms and nature itself could teach us to let go of suffering and embrace ease? -How to love your body in a completely new way From gratitude for ankle bones to releasing years of shame, how can psychedelic journeys help us rewrite our relationships with our bodies in the most unexpected way? -What do you know that you don't know you know Could someone else take a substance and access wisdom from your life? Are we all more connected than we realize?  -From comparison to inner clarity How can a conversation with a pear tree (yes, really) teach us to stop trying to be something we're not and embrace the beauty of who we already are?   About Your Hosts Katie Hendricks, Ph.D., BC-DMT, is a pioneer in body intelligence and conscious loving with over 40 years of experience. We all do it. When there's silence, ambiguity, or the absence of clear feedback, we fill in the blanks with stories. But here's the problem: our minds don't reach for generous interpretations.  They default to criticism, fear, and doubt. Whether it's giving a talk, navigating a friendship, or reflecting on ourselves, we often assume the worst, even when reality is far more kind. Evolutionary survival instincts, societal conditioning, and inner critics keep us stuck in fear-based thinking. What if there was a powerful alternative (spoiler alert, there is!) - reconnecting to the present moment, our curiosity, and embodied awareness brings us back to center so that we can really see the truth in front of us. But what happens when we let those made-up stories dictate our behavior, disconnecting us from others and ourselves? In this episode, we unpack the human tendency to assume the worst, especially in the absence of feedback. We dive into how we can stop making up stories and start living from wonder instead.   Things You'll Learn in This Episode -From defensiveness to discovery Why does your mind automatically assume the worst when you don't have all the information? How can you retrain it to lead with curiosity instead? -The power of “I'm making up a story” How does owning your internal narrative out loud open the door to deeper connection, especially in moments of tension or misunderstanding? -The loop of awareness What happens when we shift attention between ourselves and others, and how can this “loop” help us co-create instead of self-isolate? -Reconnect through the body Why does presence live in your body, not your head, and how can physical awareness stop fear from spiraling into self-doubt?   About Your Hosts Katie Hendricks, Ph.D., BC-DMT, is a pioneer in body intelligence and conscious loving with over 40 years of experience. How to Reclaim Creativity in a World Obsessed with Productivity

In our world, productivity and creativity occupy two different buckets. The former is functional, necessary, and purposeful.  The latter is frivolous, chaotic, and irresponsible. It should be put on the back burner so that we can focus on “more important things.” As a result, creative expression ends up as an afterthought, something we can only do after the real work is done. The problem is: so many of us end up feeling disconnected from our creativity, cut off from a vital resource for resonance. What if instead of putting off creativity for later, we could integrate it into everything we do? We can find harmony between creativity and productivity - getting things done and expressing our essence. The key? Integrity and freeing ourselves from the unspoken rules we follow about creativity. In this episode, we share how to recover your creativity and express yourself in a way that's authentically you.  Things You'll Learn In This Episode  -How to unblock your creativity Creativity isn't something specific people manufacture from nothing, it's a natural impulse we all possess. What blocks us from it?  -Tap into your creativity Integrity is the safe structure that supports many areas of our lives. How does inner debris block integrity and eat into our creative space?  -How to let your creative impulse arise For many of us, our creativity was suppressed by other people's judgment. Working on Something New? Don't Bottle Fear In, Blurt It Out w/ Naz Perez

Something most people underestimate about having a big vision is the process of bringing other people on board.  Whether it's an investment partner or a strategic collaborator, we're required to communicate what we see, open ourselves up to their opinions, and invite them to join us on a journey to an uncharted territory.  It's a vulnerable place, so of course, old fears, old stories, and upper limits will come up.  How do we get them to trust us and see what we see? How do we silence those old stories from past experiences?  For most change-makers dealing with the fear of executing a big vision, the natural response is to keep all the anxiety to yourself. Bottle it in so people don't think you aren't cut out for it.  The problem is this isolates us and makes connection and collaboration impossible.  Instead of hiding your feelings, try this instead: Voice and share what you're experiencing and let people in on what's going on internally.  This will create a new space where people can collaborate with and contribute to you rather than having to get in line and follow you. Then, you can proceed together and create something beautiful.  How do we get underneath the old stories and figure out where they come from?  How do we open up about our fears?  In this special coaching episode, we're joined by TV Producer, Host, and Podcaster Naz Perez. She shares her recent experience of bringing a vision to reality.  Things You'll Learn In This Episode  -From either/or to both/and One of the most common manifestations of the Upper Limit problem is thinking of a situation in binary terms. How do we shift to seeing more possibilities?  -Transparency creates trust When it comes to voicing our vision, we often avoid sharing our anxieties and fears because we think it might stall the project. Can opening up move things forward faster?  -Support your magnificence In unknown territory, it's easy to start changing yourself to fit in. Why must we avoid this?    Guest Bio Naz Perez is a TV Producer, Host, & Podcaster. She got her start on the hit daytime talk show Ellen in production and then went on to produce for E!'s Live from the Red Carpet and the popular E! True Hollywood Story docu-series. After E!, Naz produced 5 seasons of the number one prime-time show ON ABC: THE BACHELOR, THE BACHELORETTE, AND BACHELOR IN PARADISE. ABC's The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, and Bachelor in Paradise and 2 Bachelor spin-off series on Freeform called Happily Ever After. She left reality TV in 2017 to pursue a career on camera and is currently an on-camera host for Rotten Tomatoes, Fandango, The Los Angeles Dodgers, T-Mobile, and The I Don't Get It Podcast. An aligned life filled with presence, playfulness, freedom and growth expresses itself in many ways. It shows up in our choices (and how we make them), our relationships, our words and how we live. In short, it's highlighted in our ability to Be, Play, and Love. Most people miss the fact that the process of finding one's own alignment is an inner game. It has little to do with what's happening outside of us, and rarely stems from finding the right routine, ritual, or life hack. It's continuously dropping into our heart space, feeling into what's right, releasing fear, and expanding our capacity for good things. This sounds like a lot of serious work, but it doesn't have to be! There's nothing better than when we can weave together deep wisdom and playfulness. That's where life gets delicious! How do we find what flow and alignment mean to us? What gets in the way of it? In this episode, we're doing something different. Spiritual coach Rabbi Jessica K. Marshall joins us today to ask us some questions! We share what's most meaningful and joyful to us and how we express it in our lives.    Things You'll Learn In This Episode  -Weave deep wisdom into play Is there a way to grow in our purpose without losing our playfulness? How do we find that balance?  -Be willing for things to be easy  Our society is attached to the idea of struggling if something is right. The truth is, when we're on the right path, there's less friction. How do we identify when we're out of alignment and pushing harder than life wants us to?  -From control to curiosity  In most relationships, the intention is to be right and in control. How do we let go of those old patterns and get to the part where we can explore, grow, connect, and play together? Guest Bio Rabbi Jessica K. Marshall's soul is nourished by loving connection to others and the natural world. She serves by creating a sacred space to honor moments of joy, tenderness, and overflowing possibility. For the last 20 years, in environments as diverse as colleges, congregations, and secular settings, Rabbi Jessica K. Marshall has nurtured each person's inner and communal connection so their path lights up with ease, abundance, and JOY! Fusing personal growth and inclusive spiritual paths beyond Judaism, she draws on nature-based ritual, energy practices, and a healthy dose of playfulness and humor.  Jessica is a devoted galvanizer of sacred community, which she uses to reveal the depth of meaning that awaits us when we bring our full selves to communal experiences. She offers weddings, a virtual spiritual community, and one-on-one support to bless the love and spirit present in each chapter of life's journey. The Politeness Problem: How to Stop Withholding Your Truth

Be. Play. Love.

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 8, 2025 32:44

In the name of politeness, we often sugarcoat or dilute the truth, twisting it into something softer that we think the other person would rather hear. Instead of saying what we truly mean, we go out of our way to smooth over situations in hopes they'll land better. Here's the issue: when we start holding back our real feelings, we disconnect from ourselves and others. We step out of alignment with our inner wisdom.  Though society teaches us that maintaining peace is more important than being honest, human beings are meant to express themselves. While we may fear that speaking our minds will lead to conflict, there's nothing more harmful than sugarcoating the truth. Suppressing our true feelings damages our relationships and makes us lose integrity. It's impossible to live fully and authentically when we're weighed down by unexpressed emotions and holding back our true essence. But where does this need for politeness come from? How can we stop withholding and start expressing ourselves honestly?  In this episode, we explore how to break free from sugar coating and embrace genuine self-expression.   Things You'll Learn In This Episode  -Truth is located in the body, not the brain  When we're in integrity, our body sensations will tell us when we're concealing instead of revealing. Why do we need to get out of our heads to gain access to this valuable raw data?  -Withdraw, withhold and project  Withholding our feelings immediately puts us in a state of disconnection. How does it lead to us projecting and turning our problem into someone else's? -Clear the debris  People think withholding is the best way to maintain a relationship. The truth is, the relationship loses its integrity when we're not honest. How do we move through a kerfuffle in our friendships without interrupting the flow of connection?   About Your Hosts Katie Hendricks, Ph.D., BC-DMT, is a pioneer in body intelligence and conscious loving with over 40 years of experience. How to Make Up Your Mind By Listening to Your Body

One of the biggest barriers to us getting the things we really, really want are the mixed messages we send to ourselves. We want it, then we're not sure we do. We want it again and then we don't think it will work out. We definitely want it, but then we can't do it because it's risky.  When we want to go in a certain direction, we won't reach our desired destination this way. Instead, we need to be fully committed and completely in alignment - not shaky or wishy washy.  The missed messages take different forms - maybe it's doing a push and pull, making excuses not to take action, or just dipping our toe in. However it manifests, this creates a tangle in our energy system and that keeps us from having any momentum.  When we fully commit to something and go all in, that's when we experience the magic of the universe conspiring for us, but it starts with taking our whole selves into the decision.  If we treat what we want like we deserve it and believe the world is there for us to go after it, that's when the magic happens!  How do we use body wisdom to figure out the direction we want to take? How do we fully commit to something? In this episode, we talk about how to find alignment so we can make decisions with less internal friction.    Things You'll Learn In This Episode  -Make what's going on in your mind real  How do we use movement to role play walking in each direction towards the thing we want or don't want? -Thank you for self-selecting  The safest place to get feedback is from people who are in alignment themselves. How do we identify who is in integrity and who definitely isn't?  -Recognize your inner yes and no In our early years, we're taught that our own experience doesn't matter so we lose trust in what we're experiencing. Why does that make it hard for us to know what we really want?   About Your Hosts Katie Hendricks, Ph.D., BC-DMT, is a pioneer in body intelligence and conscious loving with over 40 years of experience. In improv and in life, “yes, and..” are two words that allow us to receive what's coming at us, integrate it and add to it in our own way. “Yes, and” has its own flipside which completely kills all play, wonder and joy, and it's known as “yeah, but”. When people say “yeah but” when something happens, it makes them protect, contract and move away, instead of coming forward and connecting. Here's the thing: life will always unfold in a spontaneous way and we can't control what comes up. Adopting a “yes, and..” attitude allows us to be in harmony with life's twists and turns, and it makes everything more joyful. If we stick with a “yeah, but” attitude, we'll never get to experience the expansion and wonder of curiosity. Why do people say “yeah but”? How do we shift into curiosity? Anytime we head into the unknown and want to break past a limit, a question arises inside of us, “is it safe for me to be this big out in the world?” That's because if we want something bigger, our ceiling has to rise to encompass that thing and that can be scary. Sometimes we'll expand into that bigger thing but then shrink back into our familiar shells. If we don't make our presence bigger than our fear, this process will keep repeating itself. What if, instead of expanding and contracting - we could expand and integrate at a new level? That's where flow comes into play - it's a way for us to expand our capacity for bigger things with curiosity, instead of contracting ourselves back into the known. Like a dance where we don't quite know the routine, the key is to move so that the next step emerges from the flow. How do we integrate to a new level and not sabotage ourselves? How do we reduce our fear when we're stepping into the unknown? In this episode, we talk about how to accompany yourself to the next level.   Things You'll Learn In This Episode  -Find safety in integration not contraction  When we're faced with the unknown, we can either contract or expand into it. How do we leap into the latter without fear? -Turn towards what's wanting to happen  When we're in the flow (not the fear) of the unknown, life becomes a free form dance. Why do we have to let go in order to find the next step?  -It's as easy as saying “tell me more” When we stay in conversation with others, it opens up the flow. How do we learn to go into unknown situations with curiosity instead of contraction?   About Your Hosts Katie Hendricks, Ph.D., BC-DMT, is a pioneer in body intelligence and conscious loving with over 40 years of experience. One of the unfortunate truths about our society is that we're more divided, vitriolic and operating from fear than ever before.  When we look at how people interact, there's no civility and mutual respect anymore. There's this huge collective tantrum and so much anger in people and it's completely polarized the culture.  This is especially highlighted in the political sphere. From local government to the national stage, there's more division, more contempt than collaboration, and that was never the original intent.  At its very basic level, government is about creating harmony and equity in society, but that's not happening anymore. How did we get here? How do we find peace in the midst of such vitriolic polarity?  In episode, former mayor of Ojai, California, Betsy Stix joins us to talk about leading in these contempt-filled times, and how she maintained equanimity in inflamed situations.  Things You'll Learn In This Episode  -A powerful impetus  How did The Big Leap lead Betsy Stix into local government? -The source of our separation  The amount of conflict and polarity we're seeing in our world feels unprecedented. How did we get here?  -React, disengage or rise above In these times of high conflict, it's really easy to get hijacked by fear. How do we redirect towards love?  -Back to breath How do we use our breath to create safety for ourselves when there's chaos all around us? Guest Bio Betsy is a lifelong teacher of human development, yoga, English, and French and former mayor of Ojai, California. After teaching for decades, she decided to run for mayor in 2020 during COVID, after reading Gay Hendricks' “The Big Leap” and learning that the city council was slow to enact environmental and social justice policy.  She canvased the town of 7,500 people in a mask and won 64% of the vote!  And she won again in 2022 when she ran against actor Anson Williams. During her tenure, the Ojai City Council passed rent stabilization/tenant protection, a greenhouse gas emission reduction code, approved truly low income housing while developing better solutions for the unhoused, passed animal protection ordinances celebrated by PETA, improved the city's plastic and tree ordinances, flew the Pride Flag for the first time, and founded the Mayor's Youth Council. She is proud to have run two 100% positive campaigns and championed emotional and spiritual intelligence while moving the ball forward for progressive issues.  She was so grateful to have been able to depend upon her yoga practices and experience teaching children and young people as well as the teachings of Katie Hendricks and Marianne Williamson to support her during her time in office.  She looks forward to continuing to serve her community and the planet. What's the cure for fear? Fearlessness? Avoidance? Rationalization? The answer is…none of the above. Fear is something we all experience, and even though it dresses itself up as different things (anger, diminishing or attacking ourselves), the same thing happens.  When we're afraid, we make an enemy of everyone - even ourselves. We become internally gridlocked so we can't problem-solve. We fall into whatever reactive pattern we learned early on to cope with our fears.  Thankfully, there is a better remedy which we all possess. The only true solution for fear is presence. We have to locate ourselves within the fear and move it through our bodies with something as simple as wiggling the body a bit.  What are some simple fear-melters that will allow us to not be ruled by fear? How do we create even the tiniest doorway to presence? In this episode, we talk about simple but profound tools for shifting from fear into flow.  Things You'll Learn In This Episode  -How fear works Why does fear incapacitate us internally and why do we get so tripped up when we're afraid? -From gridlocked to “goldfish” Fear has a way of internally incapacitating us. What simple exercises can we use to interrupt this pattern?  -How to befriend yourself through fear When we are fearful, we tend to abandon ourselves and disconnect from others. How do we use presence to be softer towards ourselves and create doorways to connection?   About Your Hosts Katie Hendricks, Ph.D., BC-DMT, is a pioneer in body intelligence and conscious loving with over 40 years of experience. When it comes to transforming and healing our bodies, our culture is heavily fixated on quick fix inputs. Food, supplements, gummies, trading your coffee for that trendy new herbal tea, eating more protein, trying the latest sugar alternative…the works.  People do just about everything to improve their health via what they put into their bodies, and it doesn't work. Why? Because they don't take the time to examine the environment they're putting those things into.  If your internal terrain is broken, clogged up, inflamed, contaminated and compromised, no amount of optimization or miracle ingredient will work. People are walking around with stored up toxic waste and debris in their bodies, and it affects them physically, spiritually and emotionally.  In order to truly transform, we need to detoxify before we try anything else. How do we begin to detoxify a body clogged with debris? How do we start experiencing our birthright aliveness? In this episode, we're joined by Holistic Health and Detoxification Coach, Meghan Swidler. She shares why all healing begins with an unclogged internal terrain, and how we make it happen.  Things You'll Learn In This Episode  -Symptoms are a miracle  When you have a detached relationship with your body, it's really easy to ignore all the ways it's telling you something is wrong. How do you know your body desperately needs a detox? -Clarity inside, elevation outside  For so many people detoxifying their bodies creates a cascade of breakthroughs, miracles and opportunities in other areas of their lives. Why does this happen?  -Cleansing is a process not an event In this instant gratification culture, we might expect internal cleansing to be instantaneous. Why does it often get worse before it gets better? Guest Bio Meghan is a Holistic Health and Detoxification Coach - specifically an expert in deep cellular cleansing & detoxification specializing in colon, liver, parasite, mold, and heavy metal detox. “I had no choice”, “this is how it has to be”, and “it is what it is” - for some people these aren't just statements, these are the basis of their entire reality.  Rather than seeing themselves as architects with a wealth of choices to shape their lives, they feel resigned to the idea that things are fixed just as they are. No alternatives and no changes.   This way of thinking goes back to the same place: the old stories we run in our minds become the cages that limit our own lives. It's like we're sitting in a container that shrinks our possibilities, but we can open the door anytime we want.  In any given situation, there are many possible choices but if our field of view is limited, we'll never allow ourselves to see them. The result? We give our power away to the external world, and feel oppressed by the misery of seemingly being choiceless.  How do we learn to shift out of all these stories, and truly tap into our creative engine that gives us hundreds of choices? How do we see endless possibilities where others see limited options?  In this episode, we talk about how to stop limiting yourself and believing you have no choices.  Things You'll Learn In This Episode  -Be Response-ABLE People limit their own choices because of fear. How do you reclaim responsibility and start to see all the other options that are available to you?  -Activate curiosity and wonder  How do we identify the old stories that are making us feel choiceless, how do we change the framework? -Make a new choice Let's admit it: old stories are comforting because they are familiar, not because they are helpful. Are we mass, energy or space? That's the question many have pondered time and time again. The answer: we're all 3 at the same time.  We are not just bodies of mass, though we feel the weight of our flesh, the solidity of our bones. Beneath this, there is a huge symphonic panorama inside of us, and when we tap into it, we can experience true healing and freedom. Often we focus on the mass aspect of existence, but the energetic aspect has a lot more power.  The ever-shifting flow of energy that rises and falls within us expresses itself as emotion, movement, and sensation. The rush of excitement, the pang of sorrow, the heaviness of grief—these are all movements of energy that can shape our physical experience. Beyond the mass of our bodies and the energy within, there is space. When we tap into that space, we find a sense of peace, a realization that we are not just our thoughts or emotions, but something much greater. How do we access space and energy? How do we stop identifying with the fluctuations of energy and start identifying with the space that holds it?  In this episode, we're joined by Gay Hendricks to talk about the power of mass, energy, and space, and how to stop living from the surface, but from the deeper, expansive place within us.    Things You'll Learn In This Episode  - Getting unstuck from your body traumas  The mass that is our body is a repository of personal and generational grief and trauma. How does energy and space heal all of these things?     - From repression to release We all possess within us an energy that flows freely. What are some of the things that compress this energy or misuse it?   - Learn to be with fear One way humans do away with fear is trying to control everything. Why is letting go of control a necessary step to tapping into the expansive space with us? Willingness, Not Willpower: The Secret to Generating Endless Energy

The energy of connection knows no limitations. It has the ability to shift us from tired to fully engaged in seconds. It creates a magical space of discovery and joy where there was none. It also creates aliveness, and a limitless resource of energy that regenerates constantly. How do we find this energy for ourselves and tap into it? Accessing the energy of connection starts with a willingness, not a will. When we will ourselves to do something we're forcing the energy, and that won't create connection or engagement. Willingness, on the other hand, is a soft step into something beautiful, not a hard charge towards it.  This creates a path to connection and a portal to curiosity that will effortlessly keep us energized, even if we felt tired before. In this space, energy can be shared and radiated out beautifully.  How do we learn to generate energy? How do we step into the unknown rather than the familiar (and miserable)? In this episode, we talk about how to create the energy of connection.  Things You'll Learn In This Episode  -Fatigue vs. fear  Sometimes the reason we feel tired is because we're actually afraid, and that fear is making us flee out of our bodies. How do we tell the difference between fear and a genuine lack of energy?  -Willingness and will are not the same thing  It's hard to fully say yes, when it feels a bit like a no. When we're not all in on something, how do we make a decision about what we want to do? -Make one new choice Giving energy creates more energy. Have you ever said yes to so many things and then realize you've overcommitted and now have way too much on your plate? Or maybe you agreed to something and then your circumstances changed and you just don't have the bandwidth for it anymore? Or perhaps an initial ‘yes' is now slowly morphing into a ‘no' now that you have more info… Noticing and voicing a change in agreement is something a lot of people struggle with - something we really have to practice to maintain and increase our aliveness. We might feel guilty about wanting to change things up, or just decide to go through with something we don't actually want. But here's the thing: it's a lot better to speak up than it is to do something that gets us out of alignment. Instead of writing a pros and cons list, our bodies will always tell us if we should still follow through with an agreement. If we learn to pay attention to this wisdom, we can navigate these choices better. There are so many ways to renegotiate an agreement…we can change the time, sequence and amount of ourselves that we give. But first, we must get comfortable with advocating for ourselves. You meet someone, start a relationship thinking “this is something new”...and then it turns out to be the same old pattern repeating itself. What gives? Everyone seeks relationships that nourish them - we want to be with people who love us, see us, make us feel safe, and to be regarded with value and appreciation. But so many of us keep finding ourselves in dysfunctional relationships and end up picking the same type of people over and over again. How do we break this cycle and learn to pick the right people for us? How do we even end up this way in the first place? Well…who we pick will always trace back to what we grew up seeing and how we feel about ourselves. The relationship frameworks we see in our early years become the template we apply to the partners we choose later in life. If we emerge from childhood with struggles with self-love and worthiness, we'll keep attracting connections that vibrate at that level. But here's the good news: if we learned something, we can unlearn it and replace it with something better. How do we create a new template for love and connection? Being told “don't be too much”, “don't be full of yourself”, or “how dare you earn great money doing what you love?” Only looking for what's wrong in your appearance. Feeling strange and squirmy when we get a compliment. Diminishing the accomplishments we should happily celebrate or even apologizing when we do something well. Achieving something amazing and then sabotaging yourself right after. These are all manifestations of The Upper Limit Problem, and in many ways, it's the biggest problem almost all people face. At the heart of this issue is our inability to hold more positive energy, to expand beyond the box we were conditioned to confine ourselves in. It's as if from birth a message is programmed into us - that there's only so much succeeding to go around and we might be using it all up, so we must make ourselves smaller and take up less attention. What if we could change this? What if we could expand to the widest edges of our essence and genius, dare to be in our muchness and stop apologizing for our greatness? As we head into this new year, that's the challenge - increasing our capacity for joy, success, love and essence. Dare to say “I'm totally lovable and I deserve to be here.” In this special episode, we revisit some of our favorite conversations where we discuss the upper limit problem, and how to break through self-imposed or cultural ceilings.  You'll also learn;  The root of The Upper Limit Problem Tall Poppy Syndrome and why women diminish their accomplishments  How to change our association with money (it's not a bad thing!) How to Engage in the Holidays Without Abandoning Yourself

Holidays and family gatherings are the ultimate test of our ability to be with ourselves, and how well we've healed from our personal difficulties. When people come together, it triggers all sorts of challenges - unspoken tensions and tribal rules, old behavioral patterns, and people acting out because they can't express their own wants. In these environments, it's really easy to get outside of ourselves and get swept up by the drama of the dynamic, and stay there until it depletes us…but it doesn't have to be that way. There's a way for us to stay in equilibrium and circulate our attention so that we're caring for ourselves while authentically engaging with others. All of this starts with understanding what we want, being able to receive it, and then loving ourselves enough to be with ourselves. From there, we can create a little home within when things get weird, tense, or challenging. How does the act of looping our awareness make for a better experience when being around people? How do we identify when we need to tend to our own wellbeing? In this episode, we talk about how to deal with all the complex emotions and patterns that are triggered by family gatherings.   Things You'll Learn In This Episode Judgment is a flee move  One of the things many of us are prone to do in gatherings is to start internally judging what we deem wrong. Why is this actually a fear-based action?  Love yourself enough to say what you want Gatherings also bring us in contact with a hard truth: most people don't actually know what they want exactly. How do we learn to identify this for ourselves?  Don't keep score Being around our families and people we knew in our formative years can bring up a lot of old patterns that existed back then or people might treat us differently. How do we handle this with loving awareness? Learn to loop  In collective settings, it's really easy to abandon ourselves in favor of making everyone else happy. How do we identify when we're starting to do that? How can we use looping to avoid depletion?  Looping The Choice Map   About Your Hosts Kathlyn Hendricks, Ph.D., BC-DMT*, is an evolutionary catalyst and freelance mentor who has been a pioneer in the field of body intelligence and conscious loving for over forty years. How to Stop Saying Yes When You Mean No

The word “no” is two simple letters, but it's one of the hardest things to say, especially for women. We're taught to always be agreeable, accommodating and automatically say yes to anything we're asked to do. That's why people can go their whole lives without actually knowing how to say ‘no'. So our default answer is “oh sure” or “yes, of course” even if it's to our own detriment. Our place of ‘no' is already inside us, we just have to find it and vocalize it in order to release our genuine power. It might feel unfamiliar, and we may have to practice at first, but honoring our ‘no' is the only way to truly own our space and stand in our power. Why is it so hard to say no? How do we build our no muscles? In this episode, we talk about why we don't know how to say no, and how to make a place for it in our vocabulary.   Things You'll Learn In This Episode  -Say no with no ifs, buts or maybes One of the ways we try to compromise with our no is by saying things like “maybe” or “I'll try.” What happens when we say yes to things we don't really want? -Practice saying no No can be a lot to say out loud if we're not used to it. How do we get comfortable with it?  -No before yes  A full body yes is an important thing we need to honor, but how can we genuinely say yes if we don't know how to say no first?  About Your Hosts Kathlyn Hendricks, Ph.D., BC-DMT*, is an evolutionary catalyst and freelance mentor who has been a pioneer in the field of body intelligence and conscious loving for over forty years. We just can't help but immerse ourselves in every aspect of the richness of lived experience. We're constantly balancing what's coming through us and what's coming at us from the rest of the world. When we're young, we're encouraged to play, learn new things and express our creativity in endless ways. As we grow up, we find out that we can't carry that same energy into adulthood - that society places an expiry date on learning new things. If you're a grown up, it's time to be responsible, serious, predictable - there's no room for play and discovery.  Not only is that no fun at all, it also robs us of two things that make life worthwhile - curiosity and creativity.  Meeting life with an attitude of curiosity is one of the distinguishing characteristics of a successful life, but we're often taught to block ourselves off from that. The good news is, we can interrupt this pattern and bring unexpected curiosity into our daily lives. But first, we have to welcome creativity with both arms, and be okay with things being messy and unpredictable.  How do we make room for expression and creativity? How do we break away from feeling like we're too old for play and discovery? In this episode, we talk about how to get back in touch with creativity, and why it leads to a more enriched life.    Things You'll Learn In This Episode  -Continuum of choice vs. limited options As a society, we have a tendency for polarities and limiting ourselves to either-or choices. How do we open up the possibility for so much more?  -Open your fan, express your creativity  Creativity is something we all have but we have to break out of our routines to find it. How do we find what makes life feel like a celebration, rather than a duty?  -Why creativity is scary Many of us are uncomfortable with the messiness of creativity because it's the opposite of the perfect persona we created for love and approval. The path from self-destruction to self-love isn't a straight line. Often when we commit to a kinder relationship with ourselves, we falter and self-sabotage and that leads to guilt and shame, which leads to more self-sabotage. But shame will never fuel a real transformation. What if we could interrupt this spiral with something more friendly? What if we could tap into even the tiniest amount of self-love? Most people don't realize that shame is actually a fuel, and our society conditions us to feed our souls that way, but it doesn't work. Like eating junk food everyday, you get a certain type of nourishment, but it doesn't actually sustain us. That's why we're starved for a sense of our own worthiness, and try to fill our reservoir with all the wrong things. When we love ourselves through self-sabotage, we stop getting fuel from beating ourselves up and start to mend the hole inside and fill our reservoir with self-love. How do we unlearn self-destructive behaviors and tap into even the slightest sense of self-love? In this episode, we talk about how to increase our capacity for self-loving actions.    Things You'll Learn In This Episode Create a new model of wholeness If we grew up in environments where people were rewarded for concealing their truth, how do we learn to honor and express how we feel?  Adrenaline vs. presence  Shame and guilt might not feel good, but many of us are fueled by them. Attention is one of the most important aspects of human existence, but also the most misunderstood and misused.  When we give attention to ourselves in a nurturing and curious way, it's a powerful medicine that supports our essence and self-love. When we seek it through external validation it becomes a destructive drug we can never get enough of.  So many people get these two things mixed up and find themselves leaning more on the attention they receive for what they do and achieve.  Of course attention and affection from people who love us is incredibly nourishing, but instead of making it the whole cake, it should just be the cherry on top! How do we start  regarding ourselves with love, curiosity, enough-ness? How does childhood provide the blueprint we use to give attention to ourselves?  In this episode, we talk about the right way to deal with attention.  Things You'll Learn In This Episode  -How we move from competition to cooperation We've been socialized to frame our relationships around competition but that's not the way human life actually occurs. How do we shift from competition to cooperation, collaboration and connection? -How we go from being to doing for attention  The way we were looked at and cared for as infants and children determines how we give love and attention to ourselves. What are some of the ways we're taught not to trust ourselves or embrace our own uniqueness?  -Regard people with care, curiosity and wonder  When we have someone in our lives who SEES us and wants to support who we are at our core, it gives us the foundation to see and support ourselves. As mothers, we truly get to experience the magic and miracle of the female body as we carry our babies. Growing another human being makes us bring attention to our bodies in a profound way.     But at the same time, that beautiful experience gets interrupted in the birthing process, especially when it's a traumatic one. Because the process of having a baby is governed so heavily by the mechanics and medicine of it, we can lose that connection with our bodies and struggle to reignite it. Perhaps you stop feeling safe in your body.     Or you escape into your brain to make sense of it all. Or you start feeling like you didn't deliver (pun intended) on what's expected of you as a woman.     Bringing attention to our body wisdom allows us to reclaim our bodies, but first, we have to grieve. We have to move through the sadness and feelings of loss in order to heal. If we learn to be with grief, our internal landscape expands and creates room for more joy, love, connection and self-love.     How do we heal ourselves through giving our bodies attention? How do we work through the aftermath of a difficult birthing process? In this episode, we're joined by our good friend and collaborator Abby Hildebrand. She shares her journey into motherhood and how she's reconnected with her own body.    Things You'll Learn In This Episode     -Reignite the conversation with your body   As women, society gives us so many reasons to not feel safe in our bodies. How do we reclaim the connection and find the safety in ourselves?    -Birth and rebirth   Having a baby is a beautiful experience but a traumatic birthing process can leave us feeling like strangers to our own inner landscape. How does this emerge and show up?    -The friendliest way to be with grief   There's a huge difference between riding the wave of grief and picking at a scab to continue the suffering. How do we let the grief move through us?  Guest Bio  Abby Hildebrand is a trauma-informed Breathwork Facilitator, Perinatal Mental Health Advocate, Emotional Transformation Guide, speaker, author and CEO of Wellness Creek Consulting. Take Bites of Kindness: A Loving Way to Overcome Emotional Eating w/ Geneen Roth

For women, one of the biggest battles we fight is with the size of our bodies. Parents, media and society as a whole have conditioned us to believe that our bodies are wrong. Cue the deep-rooted lack of kindness towards ourselves, the spiral of suffering, the fraught relationship with food, and an endless pursuit of physical perfection. Every food choice we make - whether it's healthy or unhealthy - is run by our relationship with ourselves. Each bite falls into one of two categories. We're either confirming that we're not enough or we're affirming that we are enough. We might not even know it, but how we eat and what we eat goes back to the painful conclusions we made about ourselves in our formative years. What is the gateway to form a loving relationship with ourselves and food? How do we start befriending our bodies instead of battling them? In this episode, we're joined by multiple New York Times bestselling author, Geneen Roth. We talk about how to change our relationship with food by going back to where it all began. One's relationship with food is an outpicturing or expression of how you feel about yourself. -Geneen Roth   Things You'll Learn In This Episode -The battle between food and self One's relationship with food is an expression of how you feel about yourself. What are the food rules we're following without even realizing we're following them? What are they connected to?  -How to stop holding ourselves to awful standards  As women, we're taught to evaluate ourselves from the outside. How do we start with our inner landscape instead? -When you're present, nothing is wrong Resistance to what's happening right now creates suffering. How can the question “If I had orchestrated this, what would I have wanted to learn” help us?    Guest Bio Geneen Roth is the author of ten books, including her newest, This Messy Magnificent Life, and New York Times bestsellers When Food Is Love, Lost and Found, and Women Food and God, as well as The Craggy Hole in My Heart and the Cat Who Fixed It. Over the past forty years, she has worked with thousands of people in her groundbreaking workshops and retreats and has appeared on numerous national shows, including The Oprah Winfrey Show, 20/20, the Today show, Good Morning America, and The View. She lives in California with charms of hummingbirds; her husband Matt; and Izzy the fabulous, eating-disordered dog. Geneen Roth's pioneering books were among the first to link compulsive eating and perpetual dieting with deeply personal and spiritual issues that go far beyond food, weight and body image. Rather than pushing away the "crazy" things we do, Geneen's work proceeds with the conviction that our actions and beliefs make exquisite sense, and that the way to transform our relationship with food, our body, and so much more in our life is to be open, curious and kind with ourselves -- instead of punishing, impatient and harsh. The Gut Feeling Is the Way: How to Complete An Arc and Pivot Into the New w/ Jesse Israel

In life, relationships and business, big pivots are preceded by an internal pull towards something new. Your intuition is telling you it's time to complete a cycle and follow the surge of expansion into the unknown. There's an inner knowing that it's time to leap into what's next. This creates a rollercoaster of emotions - on one hand, you feel the peace and clarity that comes with honoring yourself. On the other hand, you have to deal with the fall out of parting ways with something you've been doing. Here's the thing: the back and forth, the doubt, the tears and the joy and expansion are all part of the pivot. In order to complete the arc and land gently in the new thing, we have to honor the messiness. We have to let the cycle complete organically. This was the journey Jesse Israel found himself on. On two occasions, he's felt that inner pull to something new, and as scary as it was, he honored it. How did tapping into his intuition trigger a transition? How do we move through a transition by letting intuition lead the way? In this episode, the meditation leader, speaker, leadership coach and founder of The Big Quiet tells us what the process of pivoting was like, and how he was able to move through it with grace. There's so much power and potency in honoring that intuition. The wavering and back and forth was so necessary because it helped me understand even more why the gut is the way. -Jesse Israel   Things You'll Learn In This Episode   -Make your inner knowing louder than external pressure Very often, pivots push us in the opposite direction of what we've been doing for years. How do we lean into our intuitive calling to transition when the external world is [loudly] telling us to stay where we are?   -The turmoil (and triumph) of transitions Pivots bring up doubt and we constantly go back and forth on the decision, even when we know it's right. How do we cultivate trust and find joy in the not knowing and emotional ups and downs?   -Let the cycle end organically Completing cycles is really hard - so hard in fact, that people tend to resist the change. Why does this only lead to more pain and difficulty?   Guest Bio   Jesse is a meditation leader, keynote speaker and leadership coach known for founding the mass meditation movement The Big Quiet. Named "The Meditation Expert" by The New York Times, Jesse has led some of the largest meditations on earth — having toured arenas with Oprah Winfrey and co-hosted international broadcasts with Deepak Chopra. An Audible Originals best-selling creator and a Forbes Next 1000 recipient, Jesse has collaborated on meditation projects with Grammy winning rappers, coached the world's most influential entrepreneurs and keynoted at Fortune 500s around the globe. Generosity Is Easy, Receiving Care Is Hard...Here's Why

The whole point of living in true connection with others is the social exchange of giving and receiving love and care. Many of us don't have any problem with the giving part - we do that freely. But when it comes to being the recipient of that gift? Not so much, and it manifests in many ways.   You could be the caregiver struggling to carve out space to care for yourself.   Or you're the friend not sure exactly how to be there for someone in a vulnerable time.   Perhaps you're the care-getter feeling uncomfortable with needing others. Or maybe someone did something nice for you and you're putting yourself under intense pressure to reciprocate.   In all these instances, we run into the difficulty we have with the concept of care. The thing is: the river of connection has to flow for connection to flourish. Any resistance to care actually stops the flow and robs us of the richness of aliveness.   Why do we have such a hard time receiving care? How do we give care without depleting ourselves? In this episode, we talk about why caregiving is so emotionally complex and how we can get past it.    Part of the richness of living is the giving and the receiving of the abundance we experience when we're living in love and flow. -Katie Hendricks   Things You'll Learn In This Episode    -Offer presence and care When someone has experienced a loss, a common thing to ask is how we can help them. Does this actually create more stress in a difficult time?    -Taking care of yourself when you're the caregiver When you're in the role of supporting someone else, it's really easy to play the hero and overlook yourself to the point of depletion. How do you make space to pay attention to yourself?    -The truth about being cared for How we feel about receiving love and care has a lot to do with whether or not we feel lovable. What steps can we take to feel worthy of the support of others?    -Nature isn't transactional People have a hard time receiving love and care but in nature, the flowers don't refuse the pollination of bees. One of the uncomfortable truths about human beings is that telling the truth and saying what's real is very difficult. In fact, some of us believe that lying about our experience preserves trust and makes our relationships stronger.   In reality, this discomfort with truth is a discomfort with feeling our feelings and expressing our real emotions.   That in turn dampens our spontaneity, disconnects us from our realness, and robs our relationships of the authenticity they need to be strong and fulfilling.   It's impossible to truly BE WITH if we're not expressing our unarguable truth. So many of us have spent years shoving our emotions down, and that means we're actually living a lie with ourselves and the people around us.   Learning to feel our feelings starts with honoring what we're experiencing.   How do we learn to tell our unarguable truth? In this episode, we talk about how to open up about your feelings and why it makes for better relationships.   As people, we all feel and that's part of what makes us people. We're messy and we're structured - integrating those things is what makes us whole, not one or the other. -Sophie Chiche     Four Things You'll Learn In This Episode    -Honor your feeling state As humans, we've been taught to lean into logic because unlike our emotions, it's neater and easier to control. Is that why so many people struggle to feel and tell the truth? How do we start speaking from discovery/experience?   -Give yourself a breath hug When we don't let sadness move through us and we push down our emotions, it disconnects us from ourselves and it creates a massive feelings backlog. How do we start to unravel our feelings?    -Learn to love with a spine For those of us who are immensely empathetic, it's easy for someone else's emotions to overpower ours. Meet Gay Hendricks   Gay Hendricks has been a leader in the fields of relationship transformation and body-mind transformation for more than 45 years. After earning his Ph.D. from Stanford in 1974, Gay served as a Professor of Counseling Psychology at the University of Colorado for 21 years. He has written over 40 books, including bestsellers such as Five Wishes, The Big Leap, Conscious Loving, and Conscious Loving Ever After, (the last two co-authored with his co-author and mate for more than 35 years, Dr. Kathlyn Hendricks). He is also a mystery novelist, with a series of five books featuring the Tibetan-Buddhist private detective, Tenzing Norbu, as well as a new mystery series featuring a Victorian-era London detective, Sir Errol Hyde. His book Conscious Luck reveals eight ways to change your fortune through the power of intention. Gay has appeared on more than 500 radio and television shows, including Oprah, CNN, CNBC, 48 HOURS, and others. His latest book is The Genius Zone.   Gay Hendricks has been a mentor from afar for years, and it was such a joy to interview him and share his incredible wisdom, stories, and magic. Get your earbuds, get out there on your walk or drive, and get ready to be wildly inspired. There were so many nuggets of wisdom and deep, honest sharing. I got you covered here with notes.      Adding Magic To Your Life Gay Hendricks grew up with his grandparents and mother, as his father tragically died before he was born. He grew up with a lot of anger and frustration that got pushed down with food, sweets, and smoking. Gay shared that the Universe is always teaching you a lesson; it's just whether you're listening or not. He got tapped on the shoulder by the Universe when he was 24 years old in 1969. Gay was living in NH in an apartment, in a relationship and life he didn't like, and was carrying a good 150+ extra pounds. He fell on the ice and had a two-minute experience that changed his life. For the first time in his life, he could see all the levels of himself --- all the emotional layers that he hadn't felt, like anger, sadness, and eventually, in the middle was pure consciousness. He decided that day and committed to a new way of doing life. He made a declaration to himself and the Universe and committed to feeling this state of pure consciousness all the time, but without needing to fall down. He chose foods that fed pure consciousness (like blueberries instead of cheeseburgers, donuts, and blueberry pancakes) and committed to honoring his mind and body. Later that next day, he was invited to another event that also would change the course of his life. His friend took him to an event with a former Harvard professor who had gone to India and come back enlightened. He got to meet and hear Ram Dass in person and was turned on to meditation. This was just the beginning of the magic that has been a blessing in his life (like finding his wife Kathlyn) since he committed to being honest, taking responsibility, and honoring his creativity.      Living in the Genius Zone Here's one of my favorites from Gay Hendricks in our conversation --- he said that 'Genius is contagious'. We are all meant to live in the genius zone. This is the zone where you are doing what you love without a sense of time lapsing while honoring your unique abilities. Gay Hendricks shared that within 20 years, he went from spending 10% of his time in the genius zone to 100% of his time in this zone, and because of this shift. And now, life feels like one continued blessing and gift. I realized that in this conversation, being your You-est You inherently means aligning and living in the genius zone. Some ways to discover your genius zone is to ask yourself what you love to do, where you lose a sense of time doing what you love, and what your specialized and unique abilities are. For example, thanks to Gay, I realized my genius zone is doing my podcast -- both in interviewing guests, sharing my thoughts, and creating a show that changes lives. I'd love to hear what you think your genius zone is! We all have them! Share in the You-est You Facebook community, or send me an email.      The Upper Limit Problem Gay Hendricks goes into great depth about a ULP, the Upper Limit Problem. In sum, this is when you sabotage yourself when things go well. Gay teaches how to expand your capacity and override this pattern so that you learn how to experience greater lengths of joy and good. One of the ways to do this is to use what he calls the Ultra Success Mantra (USM), which I have on my desk and say daily. The USM is: "I expend in abundance, success, and love as I inspire others around me to do the same." What's important is that you are not only expanding the good within you but also creating opportunities to do the same for others.      Change Your Relationship to Time If you're like me and you're sick and tired of being sick and tired that there's not enough time, ever, then listen up. Gay Hendricks talked about what he calls Einstein time versus Newtonian time. In Einstein time, you are the cause of your time. Think of it this way, if you sat on a hot stove, a minute would feel like an hour, but if you were hanging with your beloved, an hour would feel like a minute. We are more in charge of our time than we realize. Here's the best way to change this bad habit of making time your enemy and yourself a victim (which never works out well). Stop talking about time as a victim, and stop blaming time for things you can't do. You'll never have enough time to do the things you don't want to do. Take responsibility for yourself and your time, and commit to being conscious and mindful of what you say. And, stop making time the culprit and realize you are the cause of your time, your relationships, and your life.  Final Thoughts Gay Hendricks shares not only the importance of living in the genius zone so you can fully be present and live a life you fully enjoy but how to slow down time to truly savor it. I'm thrilled to talk with the fabulous author, Gay Hendricks (of the incredible book, The Big Leap), on this week's episode of The Peace and Possibilities Podcast. He's amazingly positive and full of light and great wisdom. I can't wait for you to listen to his very interesting journey to self improvement and a lifetime of helping others.   As he struggled to find his path and incorporate all of his interests, at one point, one of his mentors said to him, "Hey, why don't you combine your interests?"   Aha! What an idea, thought Gay. And the rest is history.   He assures us, as you discover things along your journey, the universe is delighted to tickle you with a feather or a mallet? Either way, listen.   Find something that lights you up in two dimensions: Love it, with your heart. Does your work make a genuine contribution to others' lives?   Then, integrate something you love into the role, even if it's not what you want to be doing long term.   Talk to those people who have great confidence in you and listen to them! Believe them!   When you do find that thing that lights you up, ask yourself: How can I make more of my life like this?   And he recommends focusing on this genius aspect of your gifts and learning how to express more of them in the world.  And this will make it so you can have a delicious life.   What makes you get out of bed every morning with a "wow, I get to do this another day"? Find your sweet spot of creativity and be electrified!   Finally, says Gay, "Peace of mind comes from total participation in your life." Yes, yes, yes, I say!    Peace, it's one of the most important things in life to strive for…   More about Gay: Gay Hendricks has been a leader in the fields of relationship transformation and bodymind transformation for more than 45 years.
