In this episode of Our World, Connected, we explore the concept of soft power—what it is, how it differs from hard power, and why it's crucial in today's interconnected yet fractured world. From the staggering reach of K-pop to the global legacy of the Olympics, soft power shapes perceptions, builds trust, and strengthens both high level international relationships, as well as everyday community interactions.Joining host Christine Wilson is Professor J.P. Singh, Distinguished University Professor at George Mason University and an expert in international diplomacy, trade, and cultural influence. Together, they unpack the mechanics of soft power, the ways nations wield it, and its evolving role in geopolitics: focusing on values of attraction and reciprocity, rather than coercion and dominance. We also hear from Bill Morris, international event specialist and former director of culture, education, and ceremonies for the 2012 London Olympics, who shares firsthand insights on how large-scale events serve as catalysts for national identity, social cohesion, and cross-cultural dialogue. With growing global tensions, rising nationalism, and the rapid evolution of digital communication, soft power is more relevant than ever. It holds the space for finding commonalities across geo-political borders, whilst at the same time celebrating our cultural and artistic diversity. What does the future hold for soft power in an era of AI, misinformation, and shifting alliances? And how can the UK's new Soft Power Council harness culture, creativity, and diplomacy for national and global benefit?Listen to Our World, Connected, brought to you by the British Council. We jump aboard this NFL season's biggest bandwagon with a look back at one of the league's most enduring, yet historically mediocre franchises - and the only club operational for the entirety of the post-AFL era to never appear in the Super Bowl. Bill Morris ("The Lions Finally Roar: The Ford Family. The Detroit Lions, And The Road To Redemption In The NFL") joins the podcast to help us wallow in the colorful, but supremely confounding history of pro football's Detroit Lions - especially during the last 60+ years of family majority ownership begun in earnest by William Clay Ford Sr. back in 1963. From the "Curse of Bobby Layne" to Billy Sims, from Barry Sanders to Matt Millen, and from the Pontiac Silverdome to 2008's historic 0-16 season - it's all here! Plus, we speculate whether this year will finally see the Lions return to NFL championship glory. + + + SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable "Good Seats" Merch: https://www.teepublic.com/?ref_id=35106 SPONSOR THANKS (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): Royal Retros (10% off promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2 Old School Shirts.com (10% off promo code: GOODSEATS) https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats Yinzylvania (20% off promo code: GOODSEATSSTILLAVAILABLE): https://yinzylvania.com/GOODSEATSSTILLAVAILABLE BUY THE BOOK (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): "The Lions Finally Roar: The Ford Family. Bill Morris' nonfiction book "The Lions Finally Roar" was nearly titled "Natural-Born Losers," that is, of course, until the Detroit NFL team's record took a turn for the better. Morris told host (and Detroiter herself) Nancy Pearl he found a compelling story in what he called the Lions' "culture of futility," fueled largely by loyalty to the wrong people. The book isn't just about sports, though, as he said, "I didn't want to write a football book. I wanted to write a book about Detroit and the people of Detroit."

Bill Morris is the founder of Blue Star Recyclers, a non-profit providing employment to people with developmental disabilities through the recycling of electronics. He has created a remarkable organization that originated from his own spiritual enlightenment. Within days of submitting to the Higher Power, he hatched an idea to employ people that previously could not find meaningful work. Over the last decade, he has opened opportunities to many, allowing people to free themselves from the chains of antiquated beliefs and social norms. Bill is operating in the Space Between - the thin veil where the two worlds meet. Over the course of nearly two hours, Bill shares his life experiences and personal beliefs. From alcoholism to enlightenment, from the corporate world to the non-profit sector, Bill offers a humble, vulnerable and humorous look at life as a Spiritual Pilgrim.
Join Mike McGavel Jones as he interviews legendary Shelby County, TN lawman, politician, and philanthropist Bill Morris and his son Auctioneer Jeff Morris, Monday at 10 a.m. CST on Facebook Live. I will be interviewing Bill Morris, former Sheriff of Shelby County, TN from 1964 to 1970. During his tenure as sheriff, Morris was in charge of the custody of James Earl Ray. Ray admitted while in custody to the 1968 murder of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. However, Ray later claimed he was coerced into pleading guilty. Morris was Mayor of Shelby County from 1978 to 1994. Morris was instrumental, along with park superintendent Tom Hill, in introducing a herd of bison to Shelby Farms. In 1994, Morris campaigned for the Democratic nomination for Governor of Tennessee, placing second in the race to Phil Bresden. Tennessee State Route 385 in Shelby County, which was originally Nonconnah Parkway, was renamed Bill Morris Parkway. In his autobiography published in 2019, he talks about his extraordinary life including knowing Elvis Presley and his years of helping shape Memphis, TN.

GBC Ep17:Robert Mickelsen- From Fine Art to Degenerate Art This is a conversation that I've wanted to have for years. For myself personally, Robert Mickelsen has been a major influence in my glass work with his refined details and proportions. With 45 years of dedication to this wonderful medium of glass, Mickelsen has a ton of knowledge to share while also understanding he still has a wealth of knowledge to gain. Hope you enjoy this conversation and if you have any questions for Robert you can reach out to him on Instagram @ramickelsen Other links referred to in the episode: - Robert's Bio: Born Dec.12, 1951. Grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii and attended high school at Punahou (same school as Barack Obama, just ten years earlier). I went to Humboldt State University in Arcata, Ca for one year but dropped out. Started blowing glass in Greeley, Colorado in 1974. Moved to Florida in 1977 and continued glass selling my wares at street craft shows and flea markets. I made my living on the street exclusively until 1989 when I switched to wholesale craft shows. It was also around this time that I took a class at Penland with Paul Stankard that opened my eyes for the first time to the artistic potential of my craft. My work blossomed after that. I began my teaching career at Pilchuck in 1994 where I was deeply influenced by the artists that I met including Dante Marioni and Bill Morris. I continued doing wholesale craft shows, indoor art shows, and teaching for the next ten years. During that time I had several solo shows at prominent glass art galleries and attended SOFA in Chicago numerous times represented by several different galleries. I stopped doing wholesale shows in 2001 and shifted my focus to selling exclusively through high-end art galleries. This lasted until the great recession of 2008 when I found myself in a crisis when all my galleries closed and shows dried up. I struggled for about four years until 2012 when I was introduced to pipe-making by Salt and Kevin Ivey. I experienced a rebirth and a newfound enthusiasm for glass. The rest you already know. I am proud to have my work included in some of the most prominent museum collections including Renwick Gallery of American Crafts at the Smithsonian Institution, the Corning Museum of Glass, The Toledo Museum of Art, The Museum of Arts and Design, The Carnegie Museum of Art, The Mint Museum, The Cleveland Museum of Art, and The Museum of American Glass at Wheaton Village.

The book chronicles Morris’ life and his time in public service, his efforts to promote foreign trade nationally and to bring foreign businesses to Tennessee, his efforts to promote Memphis, and his personal relationship with Elvis Presley. The book also illustrates the foundation of Morris’ success – his devotion to his loving wife, family, and his deep religious roots. “From the depths of poverty to the heights of state politics, I consider my experience a rich life without riches. I hope my account does not appear to be one of self-pride and ego, but rather a lesson in how to live a great life without the benefit of material wealth,” said Bill Morris in the introduction of his autobiography, “Bill Morris: A Legendary Life.” As sheriff, Morris took accused Martin Luther King Jr. killer James Earl Ray into custody and is also credited with reforming a once undisciplined and corrupt sheriff’s department. As a four-term mayor, Morris was instrumental in promoting Memphis and Shelby County as America’s Distribution Center as well as the great work of Danny Thomas and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Morris worked to bring foreign trade to the United States and Tennessee with Governors Lamar Alexander and Ned McWherter. His work to promote trade globally earned him a seat on President Ronald Reagan’s International Economic Committee. As a close friend to Elvis Presley, Morris was one of the few people with personal access to the international superstar and was even gifted a Mercedes 280 SEL from Presley. Morris spent much of his energy promoting Memphis arts and the famous Memphis musical institutions Beale Street and Graceland. Elected as one the youngest sheriffs in Tennessee history, William N. (Bill) Morris, Jr. transformed the Shelby County Sheriff's Department into one of the most respected law enforcement agencies in the nation. The jail procedures instituted to protect James Earl Ray, after his arrest for the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968, brought Morris and his staff national acclaim, including a personal recognition from FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover. From 1978 to 1994, Morris served four terms as Shelby County Mayor. Traveling the globe, he promoted tourism with Memphis In May, Beale Street and Elvis' Graceland. He also sold the concept of Memphis as America's Distribution Center. After an unsuccessful campaign for governor of Tennessee in 1994, Morris retired from politics. Three years later, his wife, Ann, suffered a major stroke, which began his greatest challenge. For the next 19 years he became devoted to his wife's day-to-day care until her death in 2016. Welcome to the Autism Advantage podcast! I’m your host, Tom D’Eri, the COO and co-founder of Rising Tide Car Wash. In case you’re not familiar with what we do, we employ a fantastic team of individuals with autism, allowing us to empower our staff while offering a fantastic experience to customers. We believe that individuals with autism are an incredible untapped resource for many business, and this show is dedicated to proving that employing these people can create real competitive advantages. Today I’m joined by the remarkable Bill Morris. Bill founded Blue Star Recyclers, which employs people with autism and was named Colorado’s 2016 Social Venture of the Year. After he was laid off from his job when he was in his 50s, Bill began working at a disability services center with no relevant experience other than having a developmentally disabled older brother. There, he encountered four young men with incredible innate skill for electronics. Each of them turned out to have autism. Seeing the potential, Bill wrote a business plan for an electronics recycling organization (something else he had no prior experience in) to create an employment opportunity for these men and put their talents to use. When Bill brought his now-employees from their dayhab setting into an employment setting, he saw remarkable changes in them. Two non-verbal men, for example, became verbal in the workplace setting. After beginning as a for-profit company, Blue Star Recyclers became a nonprofit to be able to fund the gap between earned income and expenses. Now, they’ve almost completely closed that gap. Once they do, they’ll use grants to buy equipment and grow. The current goal is to become fully self-sustaining, then to be profitable for a year, and then to give the company back to the employees and become 100% employee-owned. In this conversation, you’ll learn about the company’s transition into a nonprofit, and what the benefits have been. In the past, Bill has tried to start businesses with other motives, such as making money. In those cases, he ran into lots of obstacles. When he opened this one, though, everything seemed to come together in remarkable ways. “It’s the universe’s way of giving you the nod of approval,” he explains. For example, trying to buy a truck led to finding investors who did an incredible amount to turn the company from a vision into a reality. Bill’s story will inspire you to believe in the good in people, and motivate you to get out there and find your own kind-hearted investors who believe in your social enterprise. In This Episode: [01:03] - Why did Bill start Blue Star Recyclers, and what has the journey been like so far? [03:39] - Bill talks more about learning the recycling industry, which he was completely unfamiliar with before he started researching it to create his company. [05:12] - Tom points out the importance of being honest about the things you don’t know, which is similar to what Bill has been talking about. [05:52] - How did Bill find people who helped fill his knowledge gaps, and build his team? In his answer, Bill reveals how much of an impact his quest to find a truck had on the business. [07:40] - We hear about a couple of the people who Bill has hired so far. [09:36] - The motive for both Blue Star Recyclers and Rising Tide Car Wash was to do good and put people to work, not to make heaps of money, Bill points out. [11:22] - Bill talks more about the mentors who helped him figure out how to build the business from a technical perspective. [13:21] - We learn about the process of going from for-profit to non-profit, and what Bill’s plan is for the future of the organization. [16:11] - Tom draws out some of the statistics and business advantages that Bill had mentioned related to employing individuals with disabilities. Bill then talks about how he takes advantage of those benefits, as well as how remarkable the impact of the work has been for several of his employees. [19:45] - Bill has learned that people on the spectrum are inherently safe employees because they don’t deviate from the procedure that you give them. [20:22] - Bill thinks that he and Tom may end up saving their respective industries, and explains why. [21:53] - Other employers who employ the entry-level workforce have problems that Bill doesn’t experience at all with his employees. [24:35] - Tom points out that you need to be able to take the long view if you’re planning to stay in business for a long time. [25:20] - What advice would Tom give to people who are looking to start social enterprises and hire individuals with autism? [27:47] - Tom lists some ways for listeners to find his company and help them out. Bill Morris covers the first part of Ephesians 5
The key verse in this passage is Ephesians 1:19 where Bill Morris encourages us to understand "what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe." During the lesson, Bill references an article by Dane Ortlund that presents some concepts gleaned from Jonathan Edwards' writings. The main points are listed below but check out the full article (it's brief!). Here are five things Edwards teaches us about the Christian life—your Christian life. 1. If you're a Christian, you don't realize how radically different and freshly empowered you now are. 2. Even if you're a Christian, you don't realize how radically fallen and blindly dysfunctional you remain. 3. Authentic discipleship to Jesus Christ calms and gentle-izes (not radicalizes and excites) Christians. 4. Christianity is gain, and only gain. 5. Revival is not what you think it is.
