Here's Episode 84 of Michigan's premier progressive podcast! One reason I started this venture is that I wanted to help show the importance of local and state politics. For sure, progressives have made some outstanding strides in terms of state politics with Democrats taking the state trifecta last year for the first time in four decades! But on the local political side, the right-wing has enjoyed some victories on that side. However, that appears to be changing, though, because we've got some big time local recalls happening in different parts of Michigan next week! There's a recall election happening where an extreme right-wing Ottawa Impact commissioner on the Ottawa County Board of Commissioners is facing a challenger on May 7th. And in Upper Peninsula's Delta County, the people were able to get recall elections in place for three right-wing county commissioners. Those elections also take place on May 7th. One of those challengers returns on the podcast to talk about race. Kelli Van Ginhoven is taking-on Delta Co. Chair David Moyle in her bid to help defeat the MAGA majority. The Hartford Athletic started playing in the United Soccer League in 2019. Chairman Bruce Mandell started the club with his partners as a way to create something for the community and help the city economically. “I've always been involved in the community, and I wanted to do something really big for Hartford and wanted to bring people together and have a spot in Hartford to do that,” Mandell said. “Whether it's, you know, parents with their kids, or whether it's soccer fans, or whether it's people coming out to have a great time, we got to get our niche, and our fans have been unbelievable.” In 2020, the Athletic established the Green and Blue Foundation, raising money to give back to the community in different ways. “You know, that feels good to kind of utilize the Hartford athletic brand to support these community elements that really need help,” Mandell said.

Heidi Tait has always been an avid lover of nature and the outdoors, so when she was working as a scuba instructor and started finding rubbish everywhere, her only option was to act. In 2004 Heidi founded Tangaroa Blue Foundation (TBF) as a way of addressing the ever-increasing threat of marine debris in our oceans. Through the TBF Heidi introduced the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI), which is a growing network of communities, schools, industries, government agencies and individuals focused on reducing the amount of marine debris washing into our oceans. Heidi was named one of the “18 Most Influential Women in Ocean Conservation” in the July 2018 edition of Ocean Geographic and has been featured in multiple interviews as one of Australia's foremost Ocean Innovators. In this compelling conversation, Rich and Heidi cover many important topics, starting with the big picture of why there is so much marine debris and where it is all coming from. They then focus on solutions – specifically how Heidi and her partners are utilizing their network and data system to not only remove garbage from the ocean, but also to stop it at the source. The Blues Foundation Podcast - Season 1: Blues Hall of Fame    If Bessie Smith is the acknowledged “Queen of the Blues,” then Gertrude “Ma” Rainey is the undisputed “Mother of the Blues.” Or, as one historian famously said, “If there was another woman who sang the blues before Rainey, nobody remembered hearing her.” Ma Rainey was born Gertrude Pridgett in 1886 in Columbus, Georgia. She made her performing debut at the age of 14 in a local theatre show. In her late teens, she married and soon found herself touring with the Rabbit Foot Minstrels. She quickly became a star and the troupe began featuring Rainey singing blues music. Those performances would precede the blues boom by almost two decades and would make Rainey the first woman to incorporate blues into vaudeville, minstrel and tent shows. In 1923 Rainey signed with Paramount Records. Paramount marketed her extensively, calling her the “Mother of the Blues". When the blues faded from popularity in the Thirties, the earthy Ma Rainey returned to her Georgia hometown, where she ran two theaters. Ma Rainey died from a from a heart attack on December 22, 1939. Ma Rainey was inducted into the Blue Foundation's Hall of Fame in 1990, the same year she was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. In 2004 “See, See Rider” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. This is her story.    Ma Rainey inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1983.
