Welcome to Art is Awesome, the show where we talk with an artist or art worker with a connection to the San Francisco Bay Area. Today, Emily chats with painter Kirstine Rainer Hansen, as they discusses her transition from design and illustration to becoming a self-taught artist specializing in 'Disrupted Realism.' Born in Denmark, Kirstine has lived across various countries, ultimately settling in Carmel, California. Her path to art was unconventional; due to financial and societal pressures, she initially studied design but shifted to painting after struggling to find work during a recession. Kirstine's work, influenced by artists like Rembrandt, Francis Bacon, and Lucian Freud, is currently on display at the Jack Fisher Gallery at the Minnesota Street Project in San Francisco. She talks about how moving to San Francisco shaped her artistic style, transitioning from classical realism to a more fragmented, collage-based approach. Kirstine also dives into "Three Questions" talking about her artistic identity, influential works, and inspiring locations in the Bay Area.About Artist Kirstine Reiner Hansen:Kirstine Reiner Hansen is an artist based on the Central Coast of California, US. Born in Odense, Denmark, she received a BA in Design and Illustration at Kolding School of Design. In 2012 she received the Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed Foundation Grant and was twice a semi-finalist for the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition. She has been featured in Juxtapoz Magazine, BloPop Magazine and the Asian Curator as well as in the book ‘Distrupted Realism' by John Seed, 2019. Kirstine discusses her transformative career in the media and the importance of women in leadership roles. Kirsten also highlights the need for flexibility and self-awareness in career choices, advocating for personal fulfillment over societal expectations. She introduces a new course based on her book to help individuals navigate their careers effectively, emphasizing the need for individuals to define success on their own terms. Recruited to lead international broadcast programming for the Hallmark Channel, encompassing 30 channels and 80 countries, she successfully increased the subscriber base while expanding into new markets, the business was acquired by Sparrowhawk Media for $240 million due to her efforts. Before 2019, Natalia Zubkova was a homemaker and a mother of three from a coal-mining Siberian city of Kiselyovsk. But when extreme air pollution caused by open-pit coal mining covered white snowy cityscape with black soot, it was time to act. ‘Black Snow', a documentary directed by Alina Simone and produced by Kirstine Baford, tracks Natalia's journey as a citizen journalist, documenting environmental catastrophe in her city and trying to hold local politicians and coal-mining magnates to account. In this episode of Trouble with the Truth, the makers of ‘Black Snow' Alina and Kirstine tell Lana what drew them to Natalia's story and why this David v Goliath battle succinctly captures the struggle of environmental journalists and activist against the mafia-like industries. Alina also talks about the pressure she was under when filming in Russia and Kirstine explores the concept of humanitarian filmmaking and how they helped to evacuate Natlalia following death threats.
“Smart Recruiting Strategies in an AI Powered World” with CoStar Group's Kirstine Wilson The Wall Street Journal recently reported that 85% of 1,000 U.S. professionals surveyed are thinking about changing jobs this year. This represents an 18-point surge from 2023. Why do this report (and episode) matter? Because promotions and job searches have become even more competitive. With AI vying for certain jobs, we need to be more articulate, strategic, and connected than ever. A high-quality network gets you interviews, not an assembly line of AI-generated cover letters. Episode 81 show highlights include: New ways that CoStar is hiring creative talent (and you can, too). Messaging and outreach methods that help you get attention. Why AI cover letters fail to captivate recruiters. How to request strategic introductions—and skip the resume blasting. The pros and cons of the “executive profile on a page.” We went live in Washington, DC with CoStar Group, Inc.'s VP of Talent Acquisition, Kirstine Wilson. In her role as lead recruiter, Kirstine has spearheaded more than 3,000 hires for this public global company with a current market cap of $33.3B. A major medical kidnapping updateKristine McCreary's son was medically kidnapped for almost two years. She fought back and won. But, she isn't done with the fight for all parents. When her son was fifteen years-old, Kristine McCreary took him to the hospital for a severe flu. Within about ten-days, he had been medically kidnapped. It took her nearly two-years to have him returned to her care. Kirstine was forced to fight CPS allegations--which were ALL overturned. Even with the CPS allegations ERASED, treated as if they never happened, in order to get her son back, Kristine was forced to take a plea deal on Felony Abuse of a Child -- a plea that was later overturned, with the judge actually noting Kristine was never named in the charges. Her son is now twenty years-old and they remain very close and Kristine is headed to the Idaho Supreme Court in defense of parental rights. But, what makes this case so infuriating are two, key factors: as Kristine explains, after her son had been in the hospital for about week, after doctors, nurses, social workers and psychologists had continually noted--in writing--he should go home with his mother, after all of that one, single doctor who apparently say her son for all of 20 minutes, that one, single doctor overruled EVERYONE and decided to bring in police and CPS.

In episode 286, Kestrel welcomes Kristine Kim, the Director of Impact at Doen, to the show. An LA-based women-run business, Doen offers collections inspired by a nostalgia for the coastal California of decades past. Doen recently unveiled their 2030 Roadmap, spearhead by Kristine, which provides an overarching blueprint for the business that will encapsulate both social and environmental elements of impact. “We wanted to see our supply chain as a value chain — not just as a global supply chain that creates beautiful products, but also generates social and environmental value across that process as well, and to find opportunities for us to maximize that social and environmental value.” -Kristine You've probably heard me say this on the show before, but the fashion and sustainability space has an issue with obsessing over binaries – I mean, it's not the only space constantly questioning what's right vs wrong or good vs bad. These very simplified binary structures have been deeply embedded into our society – by way of concepts from white supremacy, colonialism, and the patriarchy. They also lead to a lot of pinning one perspective against another – which doesn't help us move forward collectively, and instead tends to force us to choose one side over the other. I've said it before and I'll probably say it again, but there is a lot of gray area here — a lot of nuance that must be welcomed so we can actually get somewhere in our efforts to transform the fashion industry. This week's guest leads impact at Doen, and she is determined to accept the challenges that come with these *gray areas*. As she said in a recent blog post: “Like any industry, ours is often viewed—but does not actually function—within a black and white framework of right vs. wrong, sustainable vs. unsustainable. We know that labeling any brand as a “sustainable fashion brand” is greenwashing and misleading, but have we challenged ourselves beyond this? Every business on a sustainability journey will be confronted with a series of complex micro and macro decisions, often on a daily basis. The “right” answer for each organization looks different, and requires collective problem-solving and collaboration. Weighing all of the various trade-offs involved in any single action is the real impact work facing companies.” This acknowledgement is key and I find it so refreshing coming straight from a Director Of Impact. She's recently unveiled the company's 2030 Roadmap, which represents their desire to do better in an imperfect industry. Quotes & links from the conversation: “Kristine Kim On Defining Impact For Doen”, blog post Kristine wrote about the 2030 Roadmap “The main intention that I wanted to communicate to the organization was — this type of value chain work, this type of sustainability work in fashion is very not straightforward, it's nuanced, multiple shades of gray, it's not a black and white binary, right or wrong, you're sustainable or you're unsustainable. And trying to get comfortable with that level of ambiguity and unfamiliarity is what I really wanted the teams to openly embrace.” -Kirstine (21:38) Empower@Work, collaborative effort that Doen has joined Doen's 2030 Roadmap Hand Me Doen Follow Doen on Instagram >

When we spoke with Greenland's Foreign Minister Pele Broberg on his country's efforts to secure greater economic and political self-determination from Denmark, he was very excited about a book that had just been released in Denmark that he believed could really change the conversation around Greenland's relationship with Denmark. Our guest on this episode is Anne Kirstine Hermann, the Danish journalist who wrote that book, Imperiets børn (Children of the Empire), on Denmark's attempts to absorb the world's largest island in the post-World War II, essentially colonizing it while denying that it was being colonized. In this final episode of Investable Universe's five-part Polar Futures series, we discuss what happened, what it was like for Greenland, and how that legacy is still in evidence in Greenland and in Danish-Greenlandic relations. So don't have those skills in terms of communication or writing emails or just logic and problem solving and circling round to speak to people. There are a lot of skills that you don't get until you come into the world of work. And I think that the world has moved on. I think that with the entrepreneurial spirit, you are probably going to get more from the world of work and learning from peers and seeing the good side and the bad side of what they do than you are necessarily sitting in a lecture hall, listening to somebody who is incredibly qualified in what they do, but hasn't necessarily been in that work environment either ever or for a very long time. Knowing that you've got options should be really empowering to young people now because it's something that I didn't have when I was at school.”“Finance can be a tough place to work at times. You get the business looking at you, suppliers, customers, it can be a tough environment to work in. We need people around us who we can rely on as team members and who not only have that tenacity, but that drive and that desire to want to do their best in their role.”“I don't necessarily want a team that everybody wants to be CFO. I want a good, well-rounded team where, yeah some people are knocking down at my door, wanting my job after me, but other people want to do the best they are at the job that they've got because they have family outside of work, or they have loved ones that they're caring for, or actually they just don't want the stress and the hassle of a high powered job because they want to finish on time and go and play football. We're all many different sorts of people. And I think a well balanced team and a well-balanced company should support that.”“Cultural fit is massively important. I think we've probably all worked in organizations where what they do is great and we've probably been remunerated well, but that cultural fit isn't right. And if that cultural fit isn't right, then you get demotivated and you don't do your best. Eventually you get bored and you leave. So finding that right cultural fit from the office and spending the time doing that is massively important.”“Young people that come in haven't necessarily had a job in an office environment before let alone a finance function and actually setting them up with the right training and setting them up for success is important, but not everybody is going to succeed in that role. I think making a quick decision around that is equally as important. If you have gotten the wrong fit person in the team, and it could be that they're a great person but they're just not the right person for the role, then actually making that decision and finding either another role internally that's better suited to them or letting them leave and find their own career path is important.”“I think the damage done to teams by keeping under-performance in place for long periods of time is worse than facing it head on and admitting that sometimes you make mistakes. Sometimes we get recruitment wrong. I know that I have in the past. You have to sometimes go with your gut. You sometimes have to go with the best person that's sat in front of you, hope they'll fit in and be great for them. And then, unfortunately, you have to deal with the consequences if they don't quite meet expectations.”“I don't see why any of us want to do something that technology can do for us. We get a bit worried about the robot revolution. That will never happen because robots will never think in the same way as humans. They'll never spot those little intricacies and add that value. I don't want to grow a team that's enormous. I want technology to take away the heavy lifting so that my team could do the interesting stuff, the stuff that really benefits them in their career journeys.”“It still astounds me, today in 2022, the world's global finance system is pretty much still held up by Excel. There is no finance function on earth that does not have an Excel spreadsheet somewhere. I think that's symptomatic of the fact that actually as finance people, we don't challenge the status quo enough sometimes. I think that sometimes, because we have month-end reporting and because we have to make sure that what we do gets done, we go, ‘I'd love to fix that but I haven't got time and I need this to carry on working, it will do the job'. And I think sometimes we need to be bigger advocates of the fact that this doesn't work for us.” “There are ways that you can use technology to speed every process up, every operational process. And the more that we do that, the more that you're not reliant on humans and human fallibility and errors with that. As finance people, there's nothing more frustrating than being like, ‘oh, someone forgot to do this', or ‘you posted something in the wrong way round'. If we can remove that and get people doing what they should be doing, which is controlled checks, analysis, the data and the insight side of things, then we'll all be better for it.”“I think there needs to be competition within this space. Otherwise you end up with just Excel again, just a newer version of Excel that everybody relies on. There needs to be competition. A single source is great and Microsoft enables that, but there has to be competition within the partners in terms of who's going to get to market first…. A world without competition is a world without innovation. So it's massively important that that continues.”“Don't rush into the CFO role. Some people seem to be very desperate to get to the top of the ladder. It will come if it's right to come to you, like the right opportunity will come up.”“For me, it's just about learning. If you're not learning in the role that you're in, then it's probably time to move on. But it doesn't always have to be up the career ladder. It can be sideways or a similar role in a different organization. If you want to be a CFO of a fast paced organization, spend some time in finance in a fast paced organization. See how you like it. Because one day that's all going to be yours to look after.”--------Timestamp Topics:01:30 Kirstine's career path05:39 Formal education07:58 Advice on university10:31 Education v. work experience13:04 Narrowing down hiring candidates19:27 How Kirstine's finance team functions compared to others25:45 In-house v. outsourcing when it comes to finance28:03 Opportunities for improving the way finance works36:35 Advice for upcoming CFOs --------Sponsor:This show is brought to you by Soldo, the brighter way to manage business spending and expenses.
