We're kicking off 2024 (THE YEAR OF THE #BIG #BALLER - "Let your nuts hang!") with William Richert's gonzo political paranoia thriller WINTER KILLS! It's kind of funny, but not funny enough to be a laugh-out-loud comedy. It's kind of serious, but not serious enough to demand attention. Riding behind the unluckiest motorcade in American history, WINTER KILLS pitches Jeff Bridges as Nick Kegan, the half-brother of the late president, who's suddenly clued into a vast conspiracy – and then promptly given the run-around from literally everyone. Along his circuitous route to the truth, he meets the archetypal figures: The lusty femme fatale, the omniscient information broker, the trenchcoat Italians, the horny capitalist dad who couldn't POSSIBLY be pulling the strings. Depending on your point of view, it's either a unique parody or kind of boring – but nobody can say it doesn't try. For this week's episode of Unclear and Present Danger, Jamelle and John watched “Hidden Assassin” — also released under the name “The Shooter” — a 1995 action drama directed by Ted Kotcheff and starring Dolph Lundgren and Maruschka Detmers. In “Hidden Assassin,” Lundgren plays a U.S. Marshall, Michael Dane, tasked with arresting a woman, played by Detmers, suspected of assassinating the Cuban ambassador to the United States. Time is of the essence; the Secretary of State will meet with his Cuban counterpart in Prague — where the movie takes place — in an attempt to ease tensions between the two nations. But Lundgren isn't so sure that Detmers' character, Simone Rosset, is the shooter. What unfolds is a conspiracy that threatens Dane's life and implicates some of his closest allies. The tagline for “Hidden Assassin” is “Seduction is a deadly weapon!” Which doesn't have much to do with the actual movie. You can find “Hidden Assassin” to watch on Amazon Prime or for free on YouTube.Connor Lynch produced this episode. Hollywood Maverick: Wild Bill Richert - Film Society of Lincoln CenterA bold, brash uncompromising figure in the tradition of Orson Welles and John Cassavetes, William Richert burst on to the Hollywood scene near the end of the storied 1970s, first as a screenwriter and then as director of the dazzling conspiracy opus Winter Kills. A critical triumph abandoned by its studio, the movie set the tone for Richert's career to come-a quartet of highly original, idiosyncratic American features that have maintained an almost clandestine existence, subject to poor distribution and myriad unauthorized versions. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/1198501/advertisement

Richard Condon wrote sophisticated thrillers that were as pulpy as they were smart, and influenced everyone who ever tried to turn conspiracy theories into entertainments. One of his best, WINTER KILLS, centers around the youngest member of the most wealthy and influential family in America… as he tries to figure out who assassinated his brother, the President. Ripped-from-the-headlines catharsis; a pulp model as old as Oedipus Rex. --Please leave us a rating on Apple Podcasts/iTunes!-- Website: pendantaudio.com Twitter: @pendantweb Facebook: facebook.com/pendantaudio Tumblr: pendantaudio.tumblr.com YouTube: youtube.com/pendantproductions

William Richert's adaptation of Richard Condon's assassination novel is the star-studded pinnacle of 1970's paranoid cinema crossed with a very dark and dry and dirty comedy. Directed by William Richert. Starring Jeff Bridges, John Huston, Anthony Perkins, Belinda Bauer, Eli Wallach, Richard Boone, Ralph Meeker, Sterling Hayden, Toshiro Mifune, Dorothy Malone and Elizabeth Taylor How is the world wrong about this movie? From Andras: “Winter Kills” works a lot better for those steeped in JFK assassination lore which made it hip upon release in 1979 and incredibly obscure now. Add to this the film's insistence on being funny and I guess most people don't know what to make of it. So, is the world wrong or just plain ignorant? In the 1970s, theories abounded when it came to the question of the 1963 Kennedy assassination. It probably wasn't the beginning of the Conspiracy Theory Crowd, but things certainly accelerated from there. And of course some of this stuff boiled over into Hollywood, which made a few films that touched on the events of November 22, 1963, often in the form of thinly-veiled stories. In this episode we're looking at two of them: 1974's The Parallax View, directed by Alan J. Pakula, and Winter Kills, from 1979 (or thereabouts, you'll just have to listen in to find out why it's not more specific), written and directed by William Richert. In both of them, one person works hard to uncover the truth behind unnatural deaths...and the bigger picture that's driving everything. You may not get all the answers, but you won't be disappointed by these movies. COMING ATTRACTIONS: Next time around we're taking a look at a pair of foreign films that are set during unnamed wars: First up is Jean-Luc Godard's Weekend (1967), followed by Ingmar Bergman's Shame (1968). Be warned that Weekend has some disturbing images and themes. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/wordsandmovies/support

There are a lot of American films that have covered wars from the point of view of the soldier. In this episode, we cover a pair of films that covered real-life wars from the point of view of the journalists who were sent to cover the events. Unfortunately these journalists learn that it's tough to be objective when they discover that they're taking sides just a little more than they initially thought. First we have Under Fire (1983), directed by Roger Spottiswoode and starring Nick Nolte, Gene Hackman and Joanna Cassidy. It's set in Nicaragua in the late 1970s. Next up is 1997's Welcome to Sarajevo, directed by Michael Winterbottom and starring Stephen Dillane, Woody Harrelson and Marisa Tomei. The episode is long because we have so much to talk about (we're still working on cutting it down some; hang in there and thanks for being patient.) COMING ATTRACTIONS: Reel 25 takes a look at two conspiracy thrillers from the 1970s: First is The Parallax View, from 1974, followed by Winter Kills, from 1979 (and again a few years later).

Jacob Gentry, director of The Signal and Synchronicity, returns with another 70s conspiracy thriller for us to explore: the little-seen, star-studded enigma Winter Kills (1979). It stars Jeff Bridges as the pampered younger brother of an assassinated president, sent on a wild goose chase by his domineering father (John Huston) to discover the identity of the killers. Along the way, he's helped and/or hindered by the likes of Anthony Perkins, Toshiro Mifune and Sterling Hayden. And Elizabeth Taylor has a non-speaking cameo in a flashback. Go figure. The film was funded by weed sales and might make more sense whilst utterly baked, but does it deserve to be let out of our oubliette?

In Episode 132, Jeff Belanger and Ray Auger face a brutal winter snow storm in Peacham, Vermont, in search of a story from March of 1869 when a blizzard took the lives of three wayward travelers: Esther Emmons, her daughter Mary David, and her grandson Willie. Three travelers whose lives could have been spared if a stranger would have offered some shelter. The lack of human decency in an emergency has haunted the small town of Peacham ever since.

Amish Tank Commander Sterling Hayden Last week's director's lottery came out with Kathryn Bigelow, which can only mean (checks IMDb) one of ten things. The one Graham and Tim picked was Near Dark, her vampire Western with half the cast of Aliens. Has it stood the test of time? Question of the Week is a celebration of recent birthday boy David Lynch, leading to some predictably indulgent answers from Lynch obsessive Graham before he looks at Indicator's new Blu-Ray of the very strange all-star conspiracy thriller Winter Kills in Off the Shelf. After that, Tim checks out the Swedish sci-fi Aniara, which we find an unexpected Northern connection in. Director William Richert had a dream set up for his first feature film. It was based on a new popular novel from the author of The Manchurian Candidate, he had a hot leading leading man in Jeff Bridges, and he had an all-star supporting cast made of up Oscar winners, legendary character actors, and one bonafide member of Hollywood royalty. What could go wrong? As it turns out, everything! William Richert helps tell this story that involves shotguns, drug dealers, and a repossessed mink coat.  See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Transitions 2.0 Take a Moment to Live... Take a Moment to Cry..... Take a Moment to Love... ...and don't ask why....... Faster, Harder but Fun!  I am still in reboot & discovery mode but you can start dusting off your dancing shoes because with Transitions 2.0 ... we are cranking it up a bit. My intention was similar to the previous one.. but I am starting to have fun with those tracks.. It's Progressive House & Progressive Indie Rock.. with a touch of Trance here and there.. Episode “for the Boys” or "For the girls who like those Boys".  Darker hours and Seedy Rooms.. If you can't dance you watch... ;) Playlist: 2012 Take A Moment (The Blizzard Intro Remix) ( Xtian Transcendental Edit feat. Anthony Joseph]. Armin van Buuren feat. Shakedown 2012 Dice (Trendi Remix vs Extended Club Mix) [Xtian Added Pads & Guitars Edit]. Serge Devant feat. Hadley Highlights: all tracks are quality tunes in their own right. The Armin’s jam is a fitting intro track. I think “Torpor” is a great track presenting what good progressive house ought to be. “Noor” may be the discovery of the set for me. As for “Dice” nice to hear some actual electric guitars (not electronic ones) pervading the House/Trance scene.  I had fun with this one and do believe it to be worth the space on your hard-drive  Enjoy  Xtian
