In this episode of the Connected Leadership Bytes, Andy Lopata revisits his conversation with Bruce Y Lee, a writer, journalist, and professor whose ability to communicate complex scientific ideas in an engaging way is truly remarkable. They discuss the art of balancing gravitas and humor in writing, with Bruce sharing his experience of being challenged for writing about topics like vibrating yoga pants. He argues that using humor doesn't diminish the seriousness of an issue, but rather makes it more memorable and accessible. Andy and Bruce examine Bruce's writing process and he emphasises the importance of finding a "news peg" – a relatable story that hooks the reader's attention. He uses an example to illustrate how a seemingly mundane topic can be turned into an engaging narrative that raises awareness of an issue. Bruce also points out the importance of considering the reader's perspective and using humor to connect with them. He highlights the power of opening conversations with a disarming approach that makes people more receptive to complex information. Finally, they discuss how these principles apply to speaking engagements and everyday conversations. Bruce encourages listeners to find their own voice, take risks, and embrace the power of storytelling to make a lasting impact. Key Takeaways: Humor can enhance serious communication: Don't be afraid to inject humor to make your message more engaging and memorable. Find a "news peg": Use a relatable story to hook your audience and make complex ideas accessible. Think about your reader: Consider their perspective and what they want to hear. Embrace serendipity: Don't be afraid to take risks and experiment with different approaches. Question conventional wisdom: Challenge established ideas and don't be afraid to ask "why?" Make your message sticky and transferable: Create content that people will remember and share. In today's episode of "Waking Up to Narcissism," Tony Overbay, LMFT, examines relationships affected by narcissism and emotional immaturity. A listener shares a story about their partner's over-the-top reactions, including a helicopter rescue on a hike. The conversation then shifts to characteristics of healthy relationships and the pitfalls of dealing with emotionally immature partners. Another listener's letter prompts a promise to dive deeper into the challenges faced when partnered with a narcissist. The episode also references an article, "10 Things to Never Settle for in Relationships," by Bruce Y. Lee, MD, https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/a-funny-bone-to-pick/202207/10-things-you-shouldnt-settle-for-in-relationships highlighting the dangers of settling and the critical role of mutual respect. Tony uses the “frog in a boiling pot of water” analogy for hopefully the last time in existence to explain how relationships can decline without notice. This episode underscores the importance of respect, open communication, and boundaries in maintaining a healthy relationship with a narcissistic or emotionally immature individual, group, or entity. SHOW NOTES: On this show…we are armed with a hoe and spade in hand as we attempt to pluck out our deeply rooted compulsive behavior of people pleasing. Now, before you question how bad could “pleasing” someone really be? I will just say stop, listen, and hold on to your hat! This episode is meant to be eye-opening to help you notice these characteristics in yourself and in others as a way to bring awareness and the opportunity for change. I for one held out on addressing these issues longer than I should. Frankly, I was in denial. A notable characteristic in itself. I'm “helping people” hello, doesn't anyone but me recognize this? For some reason, I just had the capacity to be able to take on more and solve everyone else's problems while solving my own. Sounds reasonable right? Well if you just said yes then you are in as bad of shape as I was so stay tuned. I didn't know what people were referring to when they would say things like, take care of yourself first before you can take care of others. If I would have taken the time to do that, then they would have been in even more of a mess than they were to start with. Geez - looking back now I can see how ridiculous that line of thinking was but then, under that influence, without the awareness, it sounded perfectly normal. As populations gravitate to large cities throughout the world and are absorbed into the middle class, there are corresponding significant shifts in lifestyle; one of these is diet. While access to new food sources can certainly lead to a healthier lifestyle, it just as easily can cause serious health issues. Many of these communities and nations are ill-equipped to handle the exponential rise of certain illnesses traceable in part to diet and nutrition. Take for example the rate of Type II diabetes worldwide; it has almost doubled in the past decade. Much of this increase occurred in the Middle East, where affluence is directly correlated with changes in diet. Similar epidemics of obesity and hypertension, previously unheard of in certain parts of the world, are also on the rise. This discussion will focus not only on the causes of these illnesses in unexpected places, but also on prevention. Speakers: Jason Beaubien, Global Health and Development Correspondent, NPR Gitanjali SinghResearch Assistant Professor, Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, Tufts University Christopher GardnerDirector of Nutrition Studies, Stanford Prevention Research Center; Professor of Medicine, Stanford University Bruce Y.
