Ten years after Greece's thunderous “NO” to austerity, Yanis Varoufakis sits down with film-maker Raoul Martinez and host Mehran Khalili to revisit that historic showdown with Europe's political establishment. We bust the official myths, look at lessons learned, and spell out what activists across Europe must do next. If you missed the story: Greece elected the anti-austerity Syriza party in early 2015, with Yanis Varoufakis as finance minister. After months of bruising talks with the European Central Bank, IMF and European Commission, the government put the creditors' terms to a 5 July referendum. Sixty two percent voted NO — but days later, Athens agreed to a third “bailout”, Yanis resigned, and Greece was locked into another cycle of cuts that to this day, it still hasn't escaped. *** SPECIAL OFFER: Use code Storm25 to get 20% off the documentary we discuss in this video, In the Eye of the Storm! https://vimeo.com/ondemand/eyeofthestormenglish *** In this talk, we unpack the new six-part series In the Eye of the Storm – from secret Eurogroup recordings to the street-level activist energy in Athens – and draw fresh lessons on leverage, media war, plan B economics and movement discipline. Whether you marched in 2015 or are gearing up for the next fight, this conversation will arm you with the story behind the headlines and the tactics to win round two. It's now ten years since the people of Greece voted in a referendum on the austerity program of the European Union. The referendum was called by the government of Alexis Tsipras and his left-wing Syriza party after months of negotiations with the EU. It brought the attention of the world media to what was happening in Greece after years of economic crisis. To the surprise of many, there was a decisive 61 percent majority for the “no” side. But then, with bewildering speed, Tsipras signed up to a new austerity program that was more punitive than the one voters had rejected a few days earlier. The U-turn triggered the resignation of the Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis. Yanis joins Long Reads for a discussion about the legacy of the 2015 referendum. You can find a loosely edited transcript of the interview here: https://jacobin.com/2025/07/yanis-varoufakis-on-the-legacy-of-greeces-oxi-referendum Long Reads is a Jacobin podcast looking in-depth at political topics and thinkers, both contemporary and historical, with the magazine's longform writers. Hosted by features editor Daniel Finn. Produced by Conor Gillies with music by Knxwledge.
Podcast Overview: In this conversation, Will Clarke and Yanis aka Dr. Dubplate discuss the evolution of the UK dance music scene, the influence of iconic venues like Plastic People, and the challenges faced by smaller venues in the current climate. Yanis shares his journey in music, the founding of his record label EC2A, and the innovative strategies he employed to build a community and support emerging artists. The discussion highlights the importance of grassroots culture in music and the impact of commercialism on the industry. In this engaging conversation, Yanis and Will Clarke explore the evolving landscape of the music industry, focusing on the importance of community, the resurgence of vinyl, and the innovations in music distribution. They discuss the pressures artists face in the digital age, the significance of supporting local economies, and theneed for genuine connections between fans and artists. The conversation emphasizes the importance of passion, persistence, and the value of tangible music experiences in a streaming-dominated world.Who Is Dr Dubplate: Be it viral moments during DJ sets or breaking down barriers for the new generation with his label ec2a, Dr Dubplate and the UK's new underground run closely alongside one another. Dr Dubplate's entry into dance music came as a teenager. Heavily influenced by his father – then manager of London institution Plastic People – he grew up absorbing Afrobeat, Rare Groove, House and Funk. Working the cloakroom on Thursday nights at Plastic People he was exposed to residencies and performances from some of the most esteemed artists – Theo Parrish, Four Tet and Floating Points to name a few- which paved the way for an education in and appreciation of UK Sound system and club culture. Dr Dubplate's DJ stripes were earned in Bristol, as promoter and resident for party series Piff where he played alongside artists such as Mall Grab, DJ Seinfeld and Hodge. In 2020 he established ec2a – a more personal project referencing his inspiration and upbringing. Emerging during the height of the new UK Garage scene, Yanis's debut as Dr Dubplate soon followed. With label and DJ projects running side by side, a following quickly formed, leading to bookings up and down the country when clubs re-opened, and a breakthrough year in 2021. A memorable headline B2B set with Interplanetary Criminal for Keep Hush, at their sold out summer festival, catapulted him into the eyes and ears of post-pandemic clubbers as did an ec2a Fabric RM3 takeover later that year. With a rich musical upbringing, it's no coincidence that Dr Dubplate's sets reflect his character; a positive, multi-genre taste with gun fingers as part of the blueprint and treating his crowds to everything from Gil Scott Heron to Kwengface, Dubstep to UK Funky and Trap.Join for updates: https://laylo.com/willclarke⏲ Follow Will Clarke ⏱https://djwillclarke.com/https://open.spotify.com/artist/1OmOdgwIzub8DYPxQYbbbi?si=hEx8GCJAR3mhhhWd_iSuewhttps://www.instagram.com/djwillclarkehttps://www.facebook.com/willclarkedjhttps://twitter.com/djwillclarkehttps://www.tiktok.com/@djwillclarke Hosted on Acast. DeepSeek has upended the AI industry with open-source models that rival OpenAI's GPT-4, shaking the global tech and financial order. But its rise also raises urgent questions about security, economic power, and AI's future. In this live discussion, Yanis Varoufakis and Malaysia-based entrepreneur and commentator Arnaud Bertrand will explore the fallout, hosted by Mehran Khalili. Yanis Varoufakis joins PTO to discuss his book, Technofeudalism: What Killed Capitalism. We discussed why Yanis believes capitalism is no longer the appropriate term to describe contemporary economic and social relations. We also talked about the financial crisis, the Covid19 pandemic, and how central bank responses to both crises served to build the power of the tech giants. Finally, we also briefly discussed the situation in Gaza and why Yanis believes reports of the decline of US global hegemony are, for the moment, exaggerated.
Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Yanis Varoufakis, economics professor and former Finance Minister of Greece, to discuss his recent book Technofeudalism: What Killed Capitalism. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on continuing US arms sales to Israel, infrastructure regulation, Florida's Medicaid dump, New Jersey's ballot design, and new reports on racial biases in medicine, also watching Christiane Amanpour talk with Zahiro-Shahar Mor about Israel's failing genocide. Professor Yanis Varoufakis then joins, first walking through the evolution from Feudalism's formula of land ownership and rent extraction to Capitalism's formula of the ownership of the means of production and profit extraction, before diving into his concept of “Technofeudalism,” a rising system of digital fiefdoms – Amazon a primary example – where products not produced by the owner of the platforms are sold with a massive rent extraction. Expanding on this, Professor Varoufakis explores the role of these platforms' ownership of the means of behavioral modification (via the extraction of data, once again, not produced by them) as an example of what he calls “cloud capital,” which takes up massive proportions of the global GDP and siphons it off from the labor market, before stepping back to analyze the role of the 2008 financial crisis and the commitment to the neoliberal dynamic of austerity for the people, socialism for the banks, in allowing the private world to funnel massive amounts of investment into cloud capital and allow existing companies (Meta, Google, Amazon, etc) to establish these digital fiefdoms. Wrapping up, Professor Yanis Varoufakis tackles the role that various fiscal and anti-trust policies, the idea of a bill of digital rights, and workplace democratization could play in helping to reclaim and reshape these technofeudalist fiefdoms. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Ramy Youssef say ‘Free Palestine' to rapturous applause on SNL, Rep. Ever wondered how an athlete's hairline might actually kick-start a rollicking discussion on sports? Or why the buzz around Atlanta's hockey scene and Vegas summer baseball is more than just hot air? Your curiosity will be satisfied as we jump from hilarious personal weather woes on the field to the contentious debates surrounding the top 100 baseball players. And if the NBA All-Star weekend had you questioning the future of slam dunks and celebrity games, we've got the inside scoop, complete with Team Shannon's slam-dunk victory celebration tales and much more!Join us as we navigate the cultural currents of masculinity and stardom in sports, with a special focus on Shannon Sharpe's rise and the evolving perceptions of black athletes. We're not just spectators; we're dissecting the dynamics of the NBA All-Star weekend, sharing our blueprints for a more electrifying dunk contest, and stirring the pot on how gossip and fame play into the sports we love. Don't miss out as we unpack the implications of player development, comparing differing international and American training methodologies, and spotlight the weight of expectations on players like Yanis who carry their teams' aspirations on their shoulders. From the court to the commentary booth, leadership styles in sports are as varied as the personalities that define them. In this candid conversation, we tackle the stereotypes, exploring how leadership is not always about who's the loudest but who sets the example. As we wrap up, we dive into the controversial world of injury management—looking at athletes like Kawhi Leonard and Nikola Jokic—and how the balance of health and toughness defines legacies. It's a blend of laughter, debate, and raw insight that's as engaging as the sports themselves. Yanis Varoufakis joins Steve nd Phil this week to talk about the thinking behind his new book technofeudalism. The ‘cloudists, as he calls them, aren't operating in the market, they have replaced the market. They learn from us tell us what we want to buy and then sell it to us. Their capital is the algorithm they have developed, but also the information we provide in the records of our behaviour and the posts that we make. The result is a massive accumulation of wealth. But how sustainable is a model that sees so much money being made by so few people? Yanis says it's not at all sustainable, and suggests a couple of ways that the governments of the world can respond, so that we benefit from the technology without destroying our respective economies.
