The nutrition title was first included in the 1973 farm bill. It's projected to make up 84% of total Farm Bill spending, with most of the funds going to SNAP. That's because the program helps more than 40 million low-income individuals provide food for their families each month. Some of those people are farmers. In this episode, we talk to Mark Nicholson, Senior Director of Policy at the Fair Food Network to dig into how the farm bill links farms and food access.  And we'll talk to farmers about how they are uniquely positioned to directly provide nutritious food for the families in their communities. Mark Nicholson, Senior Director of Policy, Fair Food NetworkMark joined the Fair Food Network after an extensive career in leading organizations involved in national agriculture policy and specialty crop production. He is a third-generation apple farmer and spent much of his professional life co-running a New York-based family business, including developing value-added products to increase revenue to the farm. His work advocating for the specialty crop industry over the past two decades earned him national recognition as a skilled and dedicated policy expert, included roles as the Chairman of the Board and member of the Government Affairs Committee for the U.S. Apple Association (USApple). Mark also spent time in his early career working in government at the U.S. Department of Agriculture and at USApple. Mark brings multiple perspectives to the agriculture policy world, and a strong passion and understanding for the myriad issues that face family farms today. The IR-4 Project was established in 1963 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and land-grant universities to ensure that specialty crop farmers have legal access to safe and effective crop protection products. Baron has been the IR-4 Project's executive director since September 2006. Alyssa Houtby works closely with the NABC's Government Affairs Committee to identify and advance the industry's public policy goals through the council's advocacy platform. “The reason why the program exists is because the companies that register products … focus their research and development area on crops that give them a large and rapid return on investments, i.e. they go after corn, soybeans, cotton, so on and so forth. The specialty crops … don't have access to those products. Mark Iannuzzi of TelNet Worldwide takes a fresh look at a long-term challenge, calls for changes “Our telecommunication policy that started in 1996 and how service providers interconnect their network was based upon TDM technology, but here we are in 2024 and we know that IP is the rule of the roost,” says Mark Iannuzzi, President of TelNet Worldwide. We need the FCC to step up and to update the regulations so that the carriers, in fact, do play by a new playbook for interconnecting their network on an IP basis. And if we do that, now you have an end-to-end system.” Recorded just before last month's Cloud Connections Conference, and just after a committee of the CCA met with the FCC, this podcast covers some of the stickier challenges of the STIR/SHAKEN era. Along with the benefits and steps forward of STIR/SHAKEN, Mark discusses how a legitimate organization with legitimate needs to call contacts, can be labeled spam, and not know it. Mark explores these problems along with a call for policy reforms and refresh. NA Williams' Roger McCollum On Roles And ResponsibilityRoger McCollum, chairman and CEO of manufacturer's rep firm NA Williams, began his long career in the automotive aftermarket at Ken Tool Co., in Akron, Ohio, where he served in a variety of sales and management positions, eventually advancing to national sales manager. He joined N.A. Williams Company in 1984 and currently serves as chairman and CEO of the manufacturer's rep firm. This past November, the Aftermarket Warehouse Distributors Association (AWDA) presented its Outstanding Leadership Award to McCollum. Leader of the Year is bestowed upon an aftermarket professional who has contributed to the industry in a unique and significant way. In nearly 45 years of dedication to the automotive aftermarket, starting with his first job at a local parts store when he was a college student, Roger McCollum has distinguished himself as one of the industry's top leaders and most committed advocates. McCollum joined N.A. Williams Company in 1984, after several years with other aftermarket companies. Over the years, he has held management roles of increasing responsibility and served as the company's president from 1997 to 2017. He was elected CEO in 2007 and Chairman of the Board in 2014, and currently serves in both positions. McCollum has directed and integrated several mergers and acquisitions which have greatly expanded, diversified and strengthened the company's business. McCollum has a long and varied history of volunteer industry service, including positions on the Auto Care Association Board of Directors and Government Affairs Committee. He has also been active in AWDA with a term as Rep Advisor on the Board or Governors, as well as AWDA's Manufacturers Advisory Council. McCollum has previously served on the Auto Care Association Events Committee and Manufactures' Representative Council. Currently, McCollum serves as chairman of the Auto Care Association Audit Committee; Vice Chairman of its Political Action Committee (ACPAC) and is a member of the Auto Care Association Nominating Committee. Importantly, McCollum has encouraged and supported the volunteer activities of many N.A. Williams personnel over the years.McCollum also serves on the Automotive Aftermarket Association Southeast (AAAS) Board of Directors and the AAAS Employee Benefit Fund Board of Trustees. In addition, McCollum serves on the Board of Trustees of the University of the Aftermarket Foundation and its Executive and Contribution Committees and chairs the Foundation's Grant Review Committee.2020 AWDA Award winner, Bill Hanvey said, “For decades, Roger has proven to be a dedicated and universally respected industry leader. I have had the privilege of working with Roger for many years and can say without reservation that his commitment to the aftermarket is second to none and absolutely deserving of being recognized with the AWDA's Outstanding Leadership Award.” In this AMN Drivetime podcast with host Bill Babcox, the two CEO's talk about McCollum's drive to serve others. McCollum says he doesn't see the volunteering he does in the industry as philanthropy. Philanthropy is something one does at church or in one's community, he says. Giving back to this industry is something we should all be taking action on McCollum says. “I see it as a responsibility. I think all of us owe something back to the business where we earn our livelihoods,” he said.Reflecting back on the host of well-known, influential mentors McCollum has learned from over the years, McCollum said he has been fortunate to work around some really brilliant people who took the time share their knowledge with him, especially as a young professional starting out. “The thing that helped me the most in those early years was, I learned how to be humble and in my case, I had a lot to be humble about. My most successful sales technique was to just be a young kid who doesn't know anything, who is looking for a break, and, I found that older people like to help young people. It's just a natural part of life.”Babcox and McCollum went on to talk about a number of other compelling topics including the continued value of brand reputation and the fragility of brands.“I think brands are as important today as they have ever been,” said McCollum. “You have to make sure that the image that you're upholding speaks to what the expectations are of the customers. When that deteriorates it's tough to get it back.”Podcast Highlights:•McCollum talks about receiving the AWDA Leader of the Year award (1:08)•His thoughts on philanthrophy and responsibility (2:11)•Growing up in Akron, Ohio, where Babcox Media is based and being a lifelong Cleveland Browns fan (5:03)•First job in the aftermarket (7:03)•Industry Mentors (11:22)•Game-changing moments (15:21)•The value of brands (18:35)•Funny stories from the Road (23:19)•The secret to success (28:00)

This impactful episode features a can't-miss discussion with Rob Slack, Industry Relations Executive at Openforce, and Doug Grawe, the newly appointed General Counsel at Openforce. Rob's article titled “5 Transportation Industry Projections to Watch in 2022” was recently featured in the CLDA fall magazine, so we wanted to keep the discussion going while the article is hot off the press!    In this year-end episode, host Nick Hancock interviews Rob and Doug to discuss how the current state of the world is impacting transportation businesses, as well as everyday consumers. One thing they all agree on – technology plays a massive role in righting the supply chain ship, despite a relentless concentration on compliance at every step.        We wish all of our listeners a very happy and healthy holiday season!   The Gig Academy host Nick Hancock, Openforce Gig Academy Podcast Host and Customer Success Manager of Key Accounts Nick monitors all areas that pertain to and affect the gig economy and IC model to best advise and meet the needs of Openforce's clientele. Prior to working at Openforce, Nick worked in the dental manufacturing industry and has a background in insurance as a producer. Nick has a Bachelor's degree in Interdisciplinary Studies of Humanities from Northern Arizona University. Nick resides in Phoenix, Arizona where he and his wife recently welcomed their firstborn daughter in October 2021. About this episode's guests Rob Slack, Industry Relations Executive at Openforce Rob started in the delivery business in 1968 as a helper on his big brother's delivery route. Being a typical big brother, he made Rob do most of the work! In 1976, from his dorm room at Siena College, Rob started his first courier company L.E.D.F.O.O.T Express (Light Express Deliveries for Operating On Time). In 1980 Rob served as the Transportation Manager for the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. 14 years later, his 17-office, 700-driver courier operation went public on the NY Stock Exchange along with several industry friends as US Delivery. In 1996 Rob invested in a startup, SCI. In 1999 Rob became the Senior VP of NextJet out of Dallas, TX, and left in 2001 to become active with SCI, serving as President and COO for over 16 years. Rob is a 25+ year board member of the MCAA/CLDA and served as President from 2006-2008. He is the recipient of the CLDA Distinguished Service Award and was inducted into the Courier Hall of Fame in 2002. Doug Grawe, General Counsel at Openforce For Doug, law school essentially changed the way he analyzed problems which has proven to be an invaluable skill for corporate transportation companies over the last 17 years. A quick study, Doug grew most of his career with Dart Transit Company, one of the top-performing and established trucking companies in America. Dart is known for building one of the best owner-operator business models, where Doug had the opportunity to learn from some of the great industry pillars. From there, Doug founded the Grawe Group, LLC, a law and consulting firm specializing in transportation. He has advised several businesses to help them achieve their goals through practical, sustainable risk management solutions. Doug thrives on serving as a partner to transportation business leaders and collaborating with them to figure out solutions, not just telling them what they can and cannot do. Doug attended Iowa State University and holds a law degree from Hamline School of law. He is currently a board member for the Minnesota Trucking Association and chair of its Government Affairs Committee. Believing rules are made by those who speak up, Doug is active on a variety of policy issues impacting the transportation industry, but most notably protecting the rights of drivers to choose independence or employment in the transportation industry. Doug has written many trade articles on the independent contractor issue and submitted amicus briefs to the U.S. Supreme Court to protect the rights of drivers and carriers to choose. About Openforce Openforce is the leader in technology-driven services that reduce operating costs and mitigate risk for companies using independent contractors. Marie Rock  0:08  Drug and alcohol addiction is an epidemic that has hit native communities particularly hard. I'm Marie Rock. This week of Minnesota native news, a native led sobriety group receives recognition for its peer recovery work. Here's reporter Emma Needham.Emma Needham  0:24   Soper Squad is a native led recovery group with a simple mission statement: To empower and support individuals in recovery to build healthier communities. Colin Cash of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe is a founding member of sober squad, he explains what inspired him to start his work.Colin Cash  0:42  2016 was a particularly bad year. I think 73,000 people died that year, from overdose deaths of opiates. In particularly, native communities seems to be hit hardest by those disparities in those numbers statistically. 2016 Mille Lacs was a second in the state per capita for 100,000 people have overdose deaths. And so it was just really ugly trying time in the community here. Emma Needham  1:08  While early in his recovery in 2016, Colin began actively promoting recovery and sharing resources using social media. By 2017. Colin met Gary Brancheaud of the Red Lake Nation, at a community sobriety feast. With no formal plan and a desire to help people, Colin and Gary started working in the Mille Lacs community. Gary Branchaud  1:29  Colin was at that time was in the halfway house. He had about a year of sobriety, almost a year of sobriety. And he was going on his year I met this guy, I met a few other guys and he's a really positive guys. And I wanted to be around that fallen at that time has started a Wellbriety meeting at the at the halfway house. And we started parti- participate into the in that meeting. And we kept doing that, we kept doing this. And we kept getting people to meetings, kept picking people up, and we kept attending these sobriety feasts... till it came to a point where we decided that we were going to try to do something more. and we decided we wanted to get a van to get people more people to meetings...and then we sat down with a handful of us. We came up with a name: let's call ourselves Sober Squad. Emma Needham  2:20   As Colin and Gary continued their work, the community of recovery around them grew; native and non native people alike were coming to their meetings and offering resources to one another through social media and group chats. Colin explains that T shirts were really the tipping point to gathering support in their work. Colin Cash  2:37  So we started going to all these events and bringing people and we would all put on our little Mille Lacs band t shirts, that said "Sober Squad"... they were red, they stood out. And you would recognize a group of red shirts that said Sober Squad on the back to all these different recovery events. We are going to like these massive events like there was the wild rice Roundup, we went up to the opiate summit, we would go to these recovery wise was already these...Gary Branchaud  3:02   ... sobriety feasts, different districts. And yeah, and we just kept doing that.  Then we kept on  Colin Cash and Gary Branchaud  3:08  (In unison) social media. Yeah. Emma Needham  3:11  This week, Colin and Gary are accepting an award on behalf of Sober Squad for their work. The Minnesota Association of Resources for Recovery and Chemical Health, also known as MARRCH, is an organization that represents more than 75 agencies and 2000 individuals working in various behavioral health positions in Minnesota. MARRCH strives to raise awareness about addiction and the power of recovery. Amy Dellwo was a Government Affairs Committee co chair and the president elect for MARRCH. She explains why she thought sober squad deserves this year's March award for peer recovery in Minnesota. Amy Dellwo  3:48  In terms of their vision and their mission, it was truly a grassroots development. And they also partnered with Minnesota Recovery Connection, and in that they've been training peer support specialists. I think that they've trained like 60 people in peer recovery support, which is phenomenal. They've also spread this to other states and I just felt like they really needed to be acknowledged and honored for the work they've been doing. Emma Needham  4:18  Colin Cash and Gary Brancheaud will accept the peer recovery award for Sober Squad, but they want to make it clear that they are not the 'leaders' of Sober Squad. If you're interested in finding out more about Sober Squad or starting your own chapter, search for sober squad on Facebook or other social media. I was told by the staff of HSGAC Chairman Gary Peters that I was not welcome to participate in the hearing because the agenda had been set and my testimony was unnecessary –- even though I testified at the very first statehood hearing before this same committee in the Senate on September 15, 2014. I was elected for the sole purpose of representing the 700,000 disenfranchised citizens of the nation's capital in our effort to attain equality through statehood. The voiceless residents of the District of Columbia are further silenced by this action. This is outrageous and the committee should hear from you now! Growing up in a real estate family, Stephanie got licensed at 18, chose a different career path, but eventually came back to the business. With a family in real estate, the feast-and-famine cycle many agents experience is something she was familiar with. From the beginning, she knew she wanted something different, and she created it. She is now helping agents achieve the same with a 12-month planner for real estate.    Stephanie has been a licensed real estate agent since 2008. She was named one of the Scottsdale Area Association of Realtors ® "40 Under 40" three years in a row for 2017, 2018, and 2019. Stephanie is the team leader of The Bray Team at Berkshire Hathaway, which was ranked #20 out of over 1,000 Berkshire Hathaway agents in Arizona for sales in 2019. She is an active member of her community where she is the co-chair of the Scottsdale Area Association of Realtors' Government Affairs Committee and a member of the Tempe City Council Neighborhood Advisory Commission. Successful agents run on calendars and schedules, not on what’s loudest and most urgent in their business. They use social media to enhance relationships, and they delegate so they can focus on income generating activities. By putting these pieces in place, Stephanie has consistency, a pipeline and a real business, not just a sales job.    Buy The 12-Month Real Estate Planner https://thehomeconnection.shop/ and follow @stephanie.greenfield.az on Instagram    Guest Info   Stephanie Greenfield has been a licensed real estate agent since 2008. We are happy to be speaking to Roger Rickard today. Roger is an icon of advocacy in our industry.  In this episode, Roger talks about what we can do as business owners, in terms of advocacy, particularly in these challenging times and also over the long term.  Roger Rickard's bio Roger Rickard is the Founder and President of Voices in Advocacy® and author of 7 Actions of Highly Effective Advocates. He has more than 30 years of experience as an advocacy professional, speaker, trainer, consultant, and author. As a recognized expert in advocacy engagement and grassroots activation, Roger works with a wide cross-section of organizations from diverse industries. His vibrant personality and a good sense of humor make for engaging and interactive programming that is packaged and delivered in an easy to understand, easy to apply format combining his education, experience, and enthusiasm to drive advocacy success. Roger is a proud Penn State Nittany Lion and confessed political junky having received his education in Political Science. He has been an advocate for citizen involvement since the age of 13. Elected three times to public office as a young man, served as a state legislative staff member, and has worked on many political campaigns from his very own clear up to presidential campaigns.  His work spans a cross-section of local, regional, national, and international organizations. He has served in numerous industry associations' leadership roles, is a recipient of several international industry awards, and is a member of Meeting Professional International's prestigious “Community of Honorees”. He is often interviewed by radio, print, and television media, highlighted by the MSNBC show Your Business. Smart Meetings Magazine did a cover story on Roger, entitled Passion & Purpose, Roger Rickard's Call to Action. Successful Meetings Magazine named Roger one of the Six People Worth Watching in the Meetings Industry. Meetings Focus Magazine named him to their inaugural list of Meetings Trendsetters, and in 2020, Connect Magazine named Roger to their inaugural Class of 15 over 50 influencers. Roger is a BIG man at 6'8”, a BIG thinker, and he has BIG ideas for helping you succeed with advocacy. He is casually known as the BIG GUY with a BOW TIE. Roger's history Roger started his career in security. He started working in hotels for a private security firm contracted to those hotels. His job was to learn how to deal with things discreetly and diffuse them. That later rolled into a job where he got professionally trained to be a bodyguard as well.  Getting to know the meetings industry Working in different positions in hotels, Roger came to know and understand the meetings industry. Eventually, he owned a DMC (Distillation Management Company) in the industry. After selling that, he went on to work for a national organization that did high-end corporate incentive programs.  Advocacy as a result of the meetings industry The advocacy pillar of Roger's experience came into place as a result of the meetings industry. A boycott in Arizona in the 1990s, around whether or not the government was willing to celebrate the Martin Luther King Day holiday, cost the state of Arizona a tremendous amount of meetings business. That was the first time that meetings ever got used as a tool to get back at the government for their actions.  Getting involved with Meeting Professionals International After that, Roger got involved with Meeting Professionals International. He sat for some time on their Government Affairs Committee and eventually led the committee.  Creating programs to teach people how to be better advocates That led him to create programs to teach people how to be better advocates to help them speak out when they felt that issues of government or other groups were affecting their ability to be leaders in their business. That led Roger to where he is at today. Roger Rickard's advocacy Roger Rickard is involved with advocacy towards everything related to government and public affairs. He is also involved with the advocacy of demonstrating that people are leaders in their field, regardless of the industry in which they are.  Roger Rickard's advocacy myth-busting In one of Roger Rickard's programs, he does a segment of myth-busting about advocacy because advocacy is about your ability to speak in favor of a cause or an issue. There are seven branches of myth-busting. They are: Public affairs Media Public service Brands and Industry Cause Wounded warriors Business leaders and people who advocate for things Advocacy leadership If your prospects are uncomfortable, they are not going to keep on being your customers. If your employees are unhappy with the way they get treated, and you don't stand up as a business leader and defend and protect them, that cog of the business will not run as well as it should. You also need to stand up for your vendors and suppliers and defend them, plead for them, work with them, and share the responsibility, or they will not be there for you when you need them. The definition of an advocate An advocate is a person who pleads the cause of another person. The advocacy role of business owners in our industry  Small businesses, which make up a high majority of the people in the meetings and events industry, have the incredible power to tell their personal stories. Roger wrote a pocket guidebook called 7 Actions of Highly Effective Advocates to explain how business owners and entrepreneurs can be the most important advocates in the mix. One of the best advocacy actions they can perform is to tell their story.  Having a huge impact Anybody can reach out to get other stakeholders. You don't need to change your lifestyle to have an impact. All you need to do is use your personal story as the vehicle to tell a bigger story. Meetings Mean Business and Global Meetings Day  If you feel you cannot reach out to other stakeholders, join Meetings Mean Business, or be a part of the Global Meetings Day on April the 8th 2021, to find out how business gets done and how people advance their businesses through education and training. Malcolm and Michael also tackle the fact that some of the fears around voter fraud and errors are already proving valid in the 2020 election. Finally, they review some of the most crucial U.S. Senate races and the prospects and challenges that Republicans face in their bid to hold on to their majority in Congress' upper chamber. Biden Family, Incorporated | Malcolm and Michael provide a detailed overview of a massive report issued jointly this past week by the U.S. Senate's Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee, chaired by Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, and the Senate Finance Committee, chaired by U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa. The Senate report concludes that Hunter Biden, son of Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, engaged in a vast multi-year effort to extract millions of dollars from foreign sources, including from nations hostile to the U.S. The report details Biden's likely unethical and possibly illegal relationships with officials associated with China's Communist Party, Russia's government, and a corrupt Ukranian energy company along with Biden's expenditures on women affiliated with foreign human trafficking and prostitution rings. The investigation to date has detailed millions of dollars that flowed into Biden from these sources almost certainly designed to gain favor with Joe Biden during his eight years as vice president. Malcolm and Michael discuss the magnitude of probable criminality in the Obama/Biden administration, how it has possibly compromised and endangered U.S. security, and question why the Department of Justice is not acting more expeditiously and assertively in investigating and prosecuting this and other Biden and Obama-era criminal allegations. Mail-In Voter Fraud and Errors | For months, mainstream media have lectured that there is no reason to fear that mail-in voting will lead to fraud or errors in this year's elections. Malcolm and Michael have tackled this issue extensively in past episodes, pointing out that the history of mail-in voting is filled with examples of fraud and errors and that it is vastly more predisposed to fraud and error than traditional polling place voting. In this episode, Malcolm and Michael discuss multiple examples of how this is again proving to be the case in the 2020 election and why the magnitude of mail-in voter fraud and error could ultimately prove extensive and decisive. From Pennsylvania to Virginia to multiple other states, Malcolm and Michael site examples already emerging of mail-in ballots being tampered with, never received, or sent multiple times. Where is all this headed? Malcolm and Michael discuss how excessive reliance on mail-in voting means 2020 elections are likely to be the subject of extensive political party and candidate lawsuits and why even the presidential election itself may be decided in federal courts. The Battle for the U.S. Senate | Since the Tea Party's victories in the 2014 off-year U.S. Senate elections, the Senate has been under Republican control, permitting the Senate to defeat some of former President Obama's most radical legislative initiatives and nominees in the final years of his presidency. But Republicans only control the 100 seat body with a slim 53 to 47 majority and face a real challenge to main...

Did you know that Google's search can track you on a non-Chrome browser, even if you block third party cookies? Tulsi was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and again assigned to the 29th Brigade Special Troops Battalion of the Hawaiʻi Army National Guard—this time to serve as the Military Police Platoon Leader.   Tulsi continued to work for Senator Akaka until 2009, when she again voluntarily deployed with her unit to the Middle East. During this second deployment, in addition to leading her platoon on a wide variety of security missions, she also conducted non-military host-nation visits and served as a primary trainer for the Kuwait National Guard. Tulsi was one of the first women to set foot inside a Kuwait military facility and became the first woman to ever be awarded and honored by the Kuwait National Guard for her work in their training and readiness program. In 2010, Tulsi was elected to the Honolulu City Council, serving as Chair of the Safety, Economic Development, and Government Affairs Committee and Vice Chair of the Budget Committee. In 2011, she visited Indonesia as part of a peacekeeping training with the Indonesian Army. Tulsi was elected in 2012 to the United States House of Representatives, serving Hawaii’s 2nd District. She is one of the first two female combat veterans to ever serve in the U.S. Congress, and also its first Hindu member.  Now in her fourth term in Congress, Tulsi brings with her a broad range of real world experience, a storehouse of personal strength, and tested leadership as she represents the people of Hawai’i and our nation in Congress. As she works on the challenges that face our country, she remains focused on bringing her pragmatic approach to working in a collaborative, bipartisan fashion to find real solutions that best serve the people. Tulsi serves on the House Armed Services Committee where she is a strong advocate for veterans, our service members, and making smart strategic decisions that best secure our nation. Tulsi also serves on the House Financial Services Committee, where she fights for the nation's financial, banking, and housing policies to serve the American people --

Prior, he was an investigator for the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee. He has written for the Washington Post, Washington Examiner, and Washington Times - we have featured him often for the past year as he attempted to uncover the truth behind so much of the scandal with former DNC Chair - Debbie Wasserman Schultz and the Awan brothers. While the political left is searching for evidence of Russia collusion they were deliberately ignoring the crimes being committed by their own.
