The landmark 1972 movie Jeremiah Johnson featuring Robert Redford should be mandatory viewing for every red-blooded American, and was based on a book entitled "Crow Killer: The Saga of Liver Eating Johnson." But who was he really, and was his name even Johnson? From the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, Nathan Bender tells us all about this part-man-part-myth historical figure. Where'd he come from, why'd he prefer Hawkins guns, what'd he do for money, why'd he fight the Crows and why'd he start eating their livers--or did he? Inspired into a history career by the original Jeremiah Johnson movie, he's since become an authority on the topic. Following this interview, I returned to Mountain View Mallard's lodge and rewatched the movie for the umpteenth time. Check it out. The quote above door reads, "Back to the New West. The Wild West I leave to you." While many people have traveled since forever to Cody, Wyoming, to discover the Wild West, many came to disappear or to be reinvented. From the Buffalo Bill Center of the Wild West, Mckracken Research Library, Eric Rossborough provides entertaining accounts of some colorful personalities that did just that, explaining why back in the day locals never asked new folks' names or origins. An amazing storyteller, Rossborough's character descriptions will have you at times laughing out loud and at other times shaking your head in disbelief. Cody, Wyoming, was established in 1895 and epitomizes Wild West Wyoming. It bears Buffalo Bill Cody's name, but what was his true involvement in the town's origins? What was the area like when Cody was established, what was the significance of its location, what were some of the local industries, who were some colorfully notable characters? And how'd the Shoshone River derive its name? Taking a brief break from duck blind, Ramsey Russell adds cultural context to his Wyoming duck hunt by meeting with Eric Rossborough, librarian at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West Museum in Cody, Wyoming. What is Bipolar II Disorder and what does it have to do with this podcast? For the past 15 years, Ashley Hlebinsky has been immersed in the study of firearms history, technology, and culture becoming one of the nation's foremost authorities on the subject. Hlebinsky has researched and worked in several nationally recognized firearms and weapons collections, including the Smithsonian Institution's National Firearms Collection and the Buffalo Bill Center of the West's Cody Firearms Museum. For the past decade, she worked for and ran the Cody Firearms Museum, one of the largest and only accredited firearms museums in the country.Ashley has accomplished a lot during her relatively short career - achieving all of these milestones before her 30th birthday. While many have described her as the "energizer bunny" and "overly passionate," juggling multiple high stress, high level projects, that level of energy is often punctuated with behind-the-scenes exhaustion and depression. In November 2020 she finally made sense of the opposite sides to her life. Realizing that maybe it's not "normal" to have a full time job, build a museum, run a consulting business, as well as film an entire season of a TV show at the same time, she was ultimately diagnosed with Bipolar 2 disorder. Find Ashley at The Gun Code, on Instagram, on Facebook, or on Twitter.
Dennis shares his experiences creating event posters. ... A native San Franciscan, Dennis graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the California College of the Arts. His knack for composition paired with his eye for color gave him a distinctive look and he was able to establish himself as an illustrator in San Francisco. Wanting to explore more opportunities as an illustrator, he moved to New York in 1980. While there, he flourished as an artist, which eventually led him to a successful career as one of the nation's top illustrators. His compelling poster images include the NFL Super Bowl XXIX and the 2006 Kentucky Derby. His paintings were featured on many well-known book covers including, the Tales of the City series by Armisted Maupin, and several covers for authors Elmore Leonard and James Lee Burke. Dennis was the featured cover artist for Hemispheres, United Airlines in-flight magazine, the National Lampoon and, more recently, Western Art Collector, American Art Collector, Southwest Art, and the Jackson Hole Traveler. Dennis' strong and richly colored images borrow much of their inspiration from early 20th century paintings and posters. His early influences, J.C. Leyendecker, N.C. Wyeth, Ludwig Hohlwein and Tom Purvis, were all master designers in composition. The demands of illustration and poster design, with its simplified, sculpturally rendered images gave Dennis the discipline and draftsmanship that gives strength to his paintings today. Dennis is not only an artist, but has taught at the California College of the Arts, the Academy of Art in San Francisco, as well as Syracuse University in New York. In 1986 he returned to his roots in California, bought property, and settled in the Sonoma wine country. About this time, Dennis turned his attention to fine art, when continuous requests of his original images were made and private paintings were commissioned. For the last 30 years, Dennis has been painting in oils for his galleries and private clients. Dennis' work is in the permanent collections of the Tucson Museum of Art, Bakersfield Museum of Art, the Booth Western Art Museum, Western Spirit: Scottsdale's Museum of the West, and the Whitney Western Art Museum at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. Dennis is an Artist member of the California Art Club. AVAILABLE WORKS DENNIS ZIEMIENSKI AT BLUE RAIN PRINT SHOP ... Produced by Leah Garcia Music by Mozart Gabriel Abeyta

With a little time in the glass sitting idle (just a few minutes) the bouquet really opens up to it's full potential The NameWhere did “Yippee Ki-Yay” come from? Is it a real expression of joy popular with cowboys in the 19th century Western United States? Is it part of the greatest one liner in movie history? Was it influenced by the phrase ‘Yippie-yi-yo-ki-yay' from the 1936 hit song “I'm an Old Cow Hand from the Rio Grande” about a 20th-century cowboy who has little in common with cowpunchers of old and sung by Bing Crosby in the film “Rhythm on the Range” (also sung later by Roy Rogers and Frank Sinatra) and considered one of the Top 100 Western songs of all time?
