Canada is experiencing a housing shortage. Although house prices in major Canadian cities appeared to have topped out, new housing isn't coming onto the market quickly enough. Higher interest rates have only tightened the pressure on buyers, and renters, too, as rising mortgage rates cost landlords more, which are passed along to tenants in rent increases. Even with recent federal budget commitments to bring more housing online by 2030, there will still be a shortfall of 3.5 million homes by then. Gregor Craigie is a CBC journalist in Victoria, one of the highest-priced housing markets in the country. On his daily radio show On The Island he's been talking for over 17 years to local experts and to those across the country about housing. Craigie has travelled to many of the places he profiles in the book, and in his interviews with Canadians he presents the human face of the shortfall as he speaks with renters, owners and homeless people, exploring their varying predicaments and perspectives. He then shows, through comparable profiles of people across the globe, how other North American and international jurisdictions (Tokyo, Paris, Berlin, Helsinki, Singapore, Ireland, to name a few) are housing their citizens better, faster and with determination—solutions that could be put into practice here. With passion, knowledge and vigour, Craigie explains how Canada reached this critical impasse and will convince those who may not yet recognize how badly our entire country is in need of change. Our Crumbling Foundation provides hope for finding our way out of the crisis by recommending a number of approaches at all levels of government. The prescription for how we're going to house ourselves, and do so equitably, requires not just a business solution, nor simply a social solution, but rather a combination of both, working hand-in-hand with all levels of government, and quickly, in order to catch up with and outpace the needs of Canadians in this ever-intensifying crisis over a basic human right. Gregor Craigie is the host of On The Island on CBC Radio One in Victoria. He is also the author of the nonfiction work On Borrowed Time: North America's Next Big Quake and the Radio Jet Lag. Alex Hallbom is a Registered Professional Planner in British Columbia, Canada. He sits on the editorial board of Plan Canada, the professional publication for planners in Canada, and publishes periodically in Plan Canada and Planning West. Learn more about your ad choices. Hundreds of thousands of Canadians exist on the edge. Renters fear eviction, homeowners feel trapped, and both are vulnerable to becoming homeless with a single stroke of misfortune. Unaffordable housing in Canada is tearing communities apart as long-time residents seek affordable housing elsewhere and businesses shutter because they cannot find staff who can afford to live nearby. For two generations, Canadians have watched affordable housing vanish while other nations have been tackling the problem. In Home Truths: Fixing Canada's Housing Crisis (On Point Press, 2024), housing expert Carolyn Whitzman reviews the decades of policy that have gotten us into this mess and shows how all levels of government can work together to provide affordable housing where it is needed. Her compelling arguments for policy solutions are backed by ideas from researchers, planners, politicians, developers, and housing advocates at home and abroad. Home Truths addresses Canada's crisis from all sides, including exploring what adequate housing looks like, providing ideas on how to resolve homelessness, explaining why nonmarket housing is crucial for Canada, and showing how and why to tackle ever-growing wealth disparities between renters and those who own. From policymakers, planners, developers, and observers needing to understand Canada's housing struggles through to Canadians seeking ideas for a new way forward, Home Truths is a critical read for a nation on edge. Carolyn Whitzman is a leading housing and senior policy researcher. She has authored, coauthored, or lead-edited six previous books, the most recent being Clara at the Door with a Revolver. She has undertaken research for the Office of the Federal Housing Advocate, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the Alliance to End Homelessness Ottawa, and many other organizations. Social housing - public, non-profit, or co-operative - was once a part of Canada's urban success story. After years of neglect and many calls for affordable homes and solutions to homelessness, housing is once again an important issue. In Still Renovating: A History of Canadian Social Housing Policy (McGill-Queen's UP, 2016), Greg Suttor tells the story of the rise and fall of Canadian social housing policy. Focusing on the main turning points through the past seven decades, and the forces that shaped policy, this volume makes new use of archival sources and interviews, pays particular attention to institutional momentum, and describes key housing programs. The analysis looks at political change, social policy trends, housing market conditions, and game-changing decisions that altered the approaches of Canadian governments, their provincial partners, and the local agencies they supported. Reinterpreting accounts written in the social housing heyday, Suttor argues that the 1970s shift from low-income public housing to community-based non-profits and co-ops was not the most significant change, highlighting instead the tenfold expansion of activity in the 1960s and the collapse of social housing as a policy priority in the 1990s. As housing and neighbourhood issues continue to flare up in municipal, provincial, and national politics, Still Renovating is a valuable resource on Canada's distinctive legacy in affordable housing. Alex Hallbom is a Registered Professional Planner in British Columbia, Canada. He sits on the editorial board of Plan Canada, the professional publication for planners in Canada, and publishes periodically in Plan Canada and Planning West. Greg Suttor is a policy and research consultant on affordable housing. He has 30+ years' experience as a researcher and policy advisor, at municipal and provincial governments, Wellesley Institute, and as an independent consultant. Learn more about your ad choices. One of India's first supermodels. Actor. Cancer survivor. Mother of twins through surrogacy. Woman of no fixed address. Today I am honored to interview cross cultural phenomenon Lisa Ray. She is an internationally acclaimed performer, philanthropist and star with a reputation for taking on challenging issue-oriented films. Raised in Canada by an Indian father and Polish mother, Ray was discovered while on vacation in India and went on to become not only one of the most successful cover models and celebrities in India but also an acclaimed, award-winning actress who starred in Canada's Oscar nominated film, Water, amongst other prestigious credits. Named one of the ‘Ten most beautiful Indian women of the millenium' by a Times of India poll, Ray cemented her profile as an iconic figure in India before leaving for drama school in London and opportunities around the world. Along the way, Ray found time along the way to host her own entertainment show in India, filmed a landmark music video for Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and became the enduring brand ambassador for Rado Watches. In 2009, Ray attended the Toronto International Film Festival in support of her work in two films. The event marked an important public announcement, in which Ray chose to share her diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma with media and the public. The outpouring of support was immediate and overwhelming. She also started a blog (‘The Yellow Diaries') to share her cancer experiences. Her forthrightness and humour in navigating a difficult illness have earned her the attention and respect of people from all corners of the world, as well as ‘The Voice Achievers Award, 2009' and ‘The Hope Award, 2010'. Ray went on to help raise funds for the establishment of the first research chair for Multiple Myeloma at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto. Ray's philanthropic interests range from taking part in the on-air drive for SickKids Hospital to Ambassador of Plan Canada's ‘Because I Am A Girl' campaign, a global movement that supports the rights of girls around the world. In 2019, Lisa released her memoirs Close to The Bone. “An unflinching, deeply moving account of her nomadic existence: her entry into the Indian entertainment industry at sixteen; her relationship with her Bengali father and Polish mother; life on the movie sets and her brush with the Oscars; her battle with eating disorders; being diagnosed with multiple myeloma at thirty-seven; her spiritual quest; lovers and traitors, mentors and dream-makers; and the heartaches and triumphs along the way. It is also about Lisa's quest for love. Funny, charming, and gut-wrenchingly honest all at once, Close to the Bone is Lisa Ray's brave and inspiring story of a life lived on her terms.” Lisa and her husband Jason Dehni have two lovely daughters, Sufi and Soleil.
Sorry that this episode is so long. I guess I got a bit long-winded tonight. Well, it's almost the weekend. We have two Ukraine stories, and three US Army stories- one of which is about the 2023 Best Mortar Competition. We have two stories from Australia, one story from Canada, and one from the UK. Finally- our last story discusses the new Amphibious Training Course that the USMC is working on to integrate the Amphibious Combat Vehicle (ACV) into their formations safely. Safely is the key word.

As the co-owner and Community Manager for the Ian Martin Group, Kate Masson works to establish a community of belonging and shared accountability for staff through a self-managed operating system and a genuine spirit of care for those in the organization. You're going to get a sense of that in this conversation. We're focused here not on the staffing organization, the work of Ian Martin Group as a B Corp, but on their foundation. They have been intentional in creating a foundation. The structure reflects the impact they intend, which includes looking at the effect they don’t want to have. They are addressing a very relevant need that they understand because of their work in hiring people. They understand the barriers to work, the challenges that exist. So, the Meaningful Work Foundation is meant to address those barriers. They are avoiding the power imbalance that can often exist between a funder and those that it's looking to fund. They're aware that they are granting small amounts and that the organizations they tend to support are small organizations, so they avoid making onerous demands in terms of application and reporting. They are engaging employees in meaningful ways, leveraging their expertise. In granting, and within the individual team members, they are addressing personal biases that might exist, getting that upfront so that they can have conversations that are really meaningful in deciding where the grants should be given. They are a small foundation, a young foundation. But I think there are some big lessons that all funders can learn, whether your lens is that of a foundation or a corporate team making donations, perhaps even from a personal giving standpoint. Have a listen. Aanikh is the co-founder of the social inelegance platform Trufan, a Toronto based startup that has raised over 1.8 million dollars in venture funding. The app donated 20 cents of every download to Free the Children. In 2015, Aanikh was named one of Plan Canada's 20 Under 20, an award that recognized 20 of Canada's brightest youth leaders. As a result, I was thrilled to have Aanikh on the program to discuss his entrepreneurial journey, and of course, his ambitions for Trufan and beyond in the coming years!

Trufan has raised over $1M to date (from several NBA players and venture firms) and has clientele that notably includes Visionary Music Group, Hootsuite, and Dwayne Wade. For his entrepreneurial and philanthropic achievements, Swish has been published in over one hundred national and international publications and has been inducted into Plan Canada's Top 20 under 20, recognized as Startup Canada's Young Entrepreneur of the Year and awarded the United Nation's Outstanding Youth Leadership award. Show Notes "I will tell you how to become rich. Close the doors. Be fearful when others are greedy. Be greedy when others are fearful." Raising capital for your startup can be a daunting task for many who have the dream of scaling fast. It is important that you get skilled in how to attract the right investors to your business. In this episode of The Entrepreneurial You podcast, Swish shares his journey of how he went about attracting the right investors to jump on board with Trufan. Here is a snippet of what she shared on this episode of the podcast: Networking “Typically what we did for the previous two years before starting Trufan, I was very much networking; I was getting out there in the community, I was meeting people. I actually interviewed a lot of foreign investors in a LinkedIn publication that I started. I wrote about their life story; I wrote about the advice they would give young people and started to build a relationship with them that way...new venture capital came on, but it was also a mix of them and angels and those angels weren't just NBA players. They were friends and family members that we got in and got $20,000 from each of them. That's the way that we went about preparing for the round. We deeply networked for the last three, four years.” ---- Hot Point: More people are likely to say yes to you interviewing them than if you ask them for coffee. Please share it with a friend.
