Today on the Lucky Letcord Podcast, Chris Oddo is joined by his colleagues at Tennis Now, Richard Pagliaro and Erik Gudris. The trio breaks down a superb opening week of tennis and looks forward to the upcoming Australian Open. Here are the topics we dive into: Tennys Sandgren tests positive for Covid but still flies to Melbourne, what's up with that? An elite quarantine in Adelaide, featuring Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka and others. Is it fair and what was Tennis Australia's motivation to throw this wrinkle into the plan? How friggin good was Aryna Sabalenka at Abu Dhabi and what does it say about her potential in 2021? Should we all be jumping on the Sebastian Korda bandwago pronto, or is prudence the better option? Erik and Richard give their take on what there is to like about Sebastian Korda and Chris mentions the intangibles, which could be why he is ahead of his peers at the young age of 20. Christian Harrison played amazing tennis, but it kind of got swallowed up by the fact that he's not into wearing masks. We discuss what happened with the American in Delray Beach, praise his amazing performance, and Chris admits that he is torn between loving Harrison and not loving the anti-mask. Erik leads a break down of some of the many interesting names that managed to qualify this year at the Australian Open. You'll love this discussion. Last but not least -- Why did Dayana Yastremska, who has been provisionally suspended, jump on plane to Melbourne? Enjoy the show and thanks for listening! Learn more about your ad choices. Never miss another interview! Join Devin here: http://bit.ly/joindevin. Christian Harrison was still a child when his older sister Kasee went missing. It would be decades before it was determined that she was one of Gary Ridgway’s 71 victims. Regarded as the most prolific serial killer in American history, he received a sentence of life in prision in exchange for information about unsolved murders, including the location of remains. While many of the victims’ family members decried the deal as failing to adequately punish him for his heinous crimes, Christian arrived at a different conclusion. He argues that “closure” is not an event that survivors experience upon execution of a perpetrator but that it is a process that occurs largely independent of the perpetrator’s punishment. Imagine being outside on a summer day surrounded by people who all share a love of the same thing. The only sounds are of feet skidding on green "clay", the contact of ball and string, and the occasional outburst of applause. You are hot and sweaty, but it doesn't matter because you are in your Happy Place doing what you love. Ten years ago, a long-standing tennis tradition in my hometown of Shreveport, Louisiana, disappeared. Yes, this week's episode is personal. A few weeks ago, my brother, Jeffrey Goodman, came up with the idea of reviving the Shreveport City Tournament, one that had taken place on the public courts at Querbes Tennis Center dating back to 1933. In its prime, The City had every junior division in both singles and doubles, every adult division in both singles and doubles, a Men's Open, a Women's Open, plus mother-daughter and father-son doubles. Querbes was THE place to be if you had any interest whatsoever in the sport of tennis. You were guaranteed to see the area's best junior and adult players go at it for the ultimate title, City Champion. This week Jeffrey talks about the challenges of bringing the tournament back, why it is so important to preserve these types of events, and how others can take similar action in their local communities. Here is a bit more information: The City Championships   The kickoff weekend to bring back one of the premiere sporting events in our area, The City Tennis Tournament, is coming. Dating back to at least 1933, it was the premiere annual gathering for all of the tennis players in our area. Dormant now for almost ten years, a group has banded together to bring back this truly special and key multi-generational event.   The kickoff weekend tournament will take place from 8/17-8/19 at Bossier Tennis Center. In honor of the marquee event of the old "City", we are having a Men's Open Singles division. The other division will be Men's Open Doubles. Prize money will be given to the top three people in each event.   Like the original City, the event will be a showcase for the best junior tennis players and the best adult tennis players in our area. Next month's tournament will feature the best high level tennis we've had for our local players in years.   As part of this initiative, we also want to bring more attention to the current efforts underway to revitalize Querbes Tennis Center, the headquarters for many years for The City. At a time when Shreveport has two players (Ryan and Christian Harrison) in the top 250 of all players in the world, we are committed to preserving the extremely rich tennis history of our area.   We are naming the event "The City Championships" with the idea that once Querbes completes its revitalization, we intend on holding the event twice a year, once at Bossier Tennis Center and once at Querbes.   Although we are only starting with two events, the ultimate goal is to get back to the original City format of all age divisions, boys, girls, men and women, singles, doubles and adult mixed. We would also love to honor the event by bringing back the Father/Son and Mother/Daughter events.   Also, we have decided to expand the event to allow any players north of Alexandria to participate. We would like the event to promote tennis for all of North Louisiana.   To register for The City Championships, click here. To visit the Facebook Page, click here. Mormon Matters - (Dan Wotherspoon ARCHIVE)

One of Mormonism's most attractive features is the wonderful chance all members are given to both formally and informally "sustain" each other as we play various roles within the community. We officially (and for church records) sustain by the raise of our hand various persons in their callings, but more importantly in that way also pledge on our part to be supportive of this sister or brother as they serve in these capacities. Hopefully we whole-heartedly mean this as we "signify by the uplifted hand" and truly feel comfortable with them in their new position and will do our best to support them in ways they may ask of us, and that when it comes up for us to do so to also offer prayers or other forms of encouragement that might strengthen them. Difficulties can arise at times, however, especially when persons are called to leadership positions that affect our communal lives in sometimes dramatic ways. For many of us, there are high stakes involved when members of bishoprics or various presidencies and other positions of leadership are called. Perhaps this person now tasked to serve in this way is someone we've had past conflicts with, someone who feels too rigid or too . . . (fill in the blank here), or someone whose personal conduct has led us to question the inspiration behind their calling. What should we do then? How can we "sustain" them? Does it mean we have to agree with this person? Obey her or his directives? Be loyal and supportive in all things she or he might ask? Can "sustaining" also mean letting them know of our feelings of discomfort with them or something they are teaching or asking? With the recent changes in the Church's First Presidency and reassignments within the Council of Twelve Apostles, many persons within the church have had to wrestle fresh with how they might sustain President Nelson and President Oaks, especially, in their new (and more prominent) capacities given certain controversial teachings or programs or policies that have been given or spearheaded by them in the past. At their next temple recommend interview or call during a ward conference for sustaining votes for the church's top leadership, how can those who feel these hesitations about those called act with integrity as they are asked if they sustain them as "prophets, seers, and revelators"? Can they "sustain" them while also speaking up in church meetings or other circles about their disagreements with their ideas or directives? "Sustaining" is an interesting topic within Mormonism, for sure! Thankfully, four wonderful Latter-day Saints agreed to come on Mormon Matters to talk about many of the complexities of sustaining, supporting, and conscientiously acting with regard to leaders and others with whom we may disagree or not enjoy. Caleb Jones follows up his participation in the previous episode on the new church leadership changes by being on again, and he is joined by the wonderful Claudia Bushman, Jenne Alderks, and Christian Harrison. All contribute terrific insights on the topic at many levels, including their own personal experiences wrestling with "What does it mean, exactly, to sustain?"

On October 25, 2016, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released a new website, www.mormonandgay.lds.org, an update of its previous site articulating LDS positions on various aspects of same-sex attraction. What is the new site like? How is it an improvement on the previous site and its messaging? Did the church make any big missteps through anything on the site? Who is the site's primary audience? About five hours after the site's launch, Mormon Matters host Dan Wotherspoon was joined by Boyd Jay Petersen, Jody England Hansen, Wendy Williams Montgomery, and Christian Harrison to talk about these and other aspects of this site and its launch.
