Pulitzer Prize-winner Dave Barry wrote a humor column for 22 years. In his new book Class Clown, he tells the story of the first 77 years of his life, spent embracing comedy – but also some difficulties. One focus of the book is his relationship with his parents. Barry writes that his mom was a kind of comedic mentor who possessed a uniquely dark, edgy wit, but also struggled with depression. And Barry's father was a Presbyterian minister and, he says, a famously good listener, but also developed alcoholism. In today's episode, the author joins NPR's Scott Simon for a conversation that touches on Barry's family, and also his concerns about new trends in the comedy industry. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, Art of Living series. I'm Paul Vogelzang, and today's episode is for anyone who's ever thought, “Maybe you can joke your way through life after all.” Because our guest today—Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist, bestselling author, and unofficial king of common sense absurdity—Dave Barry—has done just that. Yes, that Dave Barry. The man who warned us about exploding toilets, tangled with telemarketers until they stopped answering their own phones, and wrote the kind of newspaper columns that made you snort coffee out your nose on a Sunday morning. He's been called “the funniest man in America” by the New York Times, and in his latest book, Class Clown, he finally turns that razor-sharp wit on himself. Today's conversation is a fun one, although, and you can hear this…I was nervous. At one point during a roundabout question from me, Dave asks: “ iwas wondering wehre you were going with that?” I left it in the edit for your enjoyment. I've talked to 100's of big time guests from all walks of life, like Smithsonian, Prevention Magazine, Good Housekeeping and have never been tongue tied or nervous…not today. That's on me as, Dave is a wonderful guest, and he shares what it was like growing up in a world before Wi-Fi, when entertainment meant throwing rocks and preparing for nuclear war by hiding under desks. He talks about his path from a rock band in the '60s to the pages of The Miami Herald, where he turned exploding Pop-Tarts and Rollerblade Barbie into Pulitzer-worthy satire. And yes—he really was almost crushed by a bale of airborne cocaine. Florida, folks. But more than just laughs, Dave opens up about his late parents, his unique upbringing, and the emotional truth behind humor that doesn't always mean happiness. It's a rich, honest, and uproarious reminder that growing older doesn't mean growing dull—and that maybe, just maybe, the class clown gets the last word. Stay with us—because the very funny, very thoughtful Dave Barry is here. And this is The Not Old Better Show, Art of Living series, with me, award-winning host Paul Vogelzang.

The first Netflix original movie from Germany, and directed by the son of David Bowie, starring Alexander Skarsgard and Paul Rudd, yet still this project seems to be a doomed one. Born and raised in Southern California, his literary escapade takes you on a journey through the decades, chronicling his adventures as a gay baby boomer  and his lifelong pursuit of the perfect coming-out story—spoiler alert: it's a comedy of errors…..While the primary focus of these essays is to bring laughter to the hearts of readers, LATE BLOOMER BABY BOOMER offers more than just entertainment. While drawing comparisons to David Sedaris, it also helps bridge the gay generation gap between the younger and older gay men's communities through its humor and historical perspective on the challenges gay men have faced through the years. His unique blend of laughter and nostalgia with sprinkles of wisdom will captivate readers as a certified remedy for those pesky "I need a good laugh and some enlightenment" moments…. LBBB back cover text:What happens when the class clown becomes the teacher?Whether teaching in the urban ghetto or navigating the gay ghetto, Steve Milliken bridges the gay generation gap as he finds the funny about the lifelong coming out process. This book is for anyone who is gay, knows someone who is gay, or even a “straight” guy who's had a gay experience, like wearing a belt that matches his shoes."Steve Milliken's writing style is reminiscent of David Sedaris's quirky humor, but with own his unique spin. He has the true humorist's ability to find the hilariousness in all of life's awkward and sometimes painful moments. Treat yourself to this book if you love writing that will make you laugh out loud!" ANDI MATHENY, actress, acting coach, and author of Act ALIVE: The Essential Guide to Igniting and Sustaining Your Working Actor CareerAuthor Steve Milliken reveals, “While teaching in the inner-city with an implicit ‘Don't ask, don't tell' policy, I led a double life, somewhere between Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde and Hannah Montana. While intelligent and insightful, I counter this by being incredibly gullible and naïve. Strong, yet timid, caring but sarcastic, I'm all about the balance, as any self-respecting oxymoron should be….” A Southern California native, his wide-ranging essays include concealing your inner sissy in the 60s, a guide for piloting the proper parameters of profanity in the workplace, tapping into your potential for prank calls, and looking behind the scenes at catering to the temperamental stars of the '70s at the famed Brown Derby Restaurant. Steve Milliken's experiential essay titles include “My Rocky Horror Virginity Show,” “Sober Porn,” “My Colonoscopy Eve,” and “Bitch Ass Snitch” to name just a few…. https://linktr.ee//stevemillikenPhoto: Copyright Wilkinson/2024Opening and closing music courtesy the very talented Zakhar Valaha via Pixabay. To contact Wilkinson- email him at BecomingWilkinson@gmail.com

The gang steals a dog so they can pet it later this week, as they review the future dystopian gun-fu movie, Equilibrium (2002). Borrowing elements from many films before it, and lending even more to films that have come in the two decades since its release, Equilibrium tells the story of John Preston (Christian Bale), a cleric in charge of hinting and destroying sense offenders in a Orwellian fascist state. The gang doesn't panic this week as they review sci-fa adventure movie spawned from the beloved book series, spawned by the beloved radio show, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005). Arriving at it's final desination more than 20 years after Douglas Adams agreed to sell the rights for a movie, and 4 years after his death, this movie has its fair share of naysayers, and an even larger share of adoring fans. Starring household names like Martin Freeman, Sam Rockwell, Mos Def, Zooey Deschanel, Bill Nighy, and John Malkovich, it's hard to hate this light hearted (yet existential dread-filled ) ride. The first day of school comes but once a year, but the ramifacations of your outfit...well they can be felt for a lifetime. Today, notable former student and co-host of "How Did We Get Weird" Vanessa Bayer joins us to talk about this delicate time of yearly reinvention. We unpack the economic status of being hot in high school, the polarizing effects of dressing like you're from California, and whether or not it is abuse to ask someone "have we met before?" "Humor gives us a break from the stress. So if we're in this state of stress and we have a chance to laugh, that's a momentary break and that's helpful and healthy and healing." - Ron CulbersonRon Culberson was always the class clown in school, making people laugh through creative announcements. After graduating college, Ron was curious and began researching the psychology of humor, eventually becoming an expert in it. One of the main findings Ron learned was Norman Cousins, who found that 20-30 minutes of laughter could control pain. Now, Ron uses humor to connect with people and help them cope with stress, grief and loss. He believes that humor helps us to see the world from a different perspective, and that 90% of stress is based on how we view our circumstances. Even in difficult situations, humor can bring a lightheartedness and connection between people.Ron Culberson is an expert on humor and laughter, having studied the psychology of humor and spoken at hospice conferences. He is a speaker, author, and humorist, and has written four books, including Is Your Glass Laugh Full. He uses his experience as a hospice, social worker, healthcare leader, EMT, and firefighter to deliver a practical message that helps his audiences become more successful in life and work.In this episode, you will learn the following:1. How humor can be used to cope with grief and trauma.2. The power of humor to change perspectives.3. The importance of being present in the moment to spot humor. To learn more about Ron:https://ronculberson.com/You can also research and purchase his books on his web-site. What is this — high school? These approval ratings are in a time where most of the country doesn't approve of virtually anything. This concept is so antiquated, the pollsters might as well ask the public, in the presidential race, to vote for "Best Dressed", "Most Likely To Succeed", "Cutest Couple", "Class Clown", "MVP", "Best Smile" and "Most Likely to Bring Back Canadian Beer Through the Windsor Tunnel." In this episode of Rumble, Michael Moore discusses the stupidity of presidential approval ratings and why it doesn't matter how low Biden's is because there still aren't enough Americans willing to return criminal defendant #4913961R to the White House. Says Mike, "Biden could run somebody over in the middle of 5th Avenue and it still won't matter. He will get a second term — and your brother-in-law is still not invited to Thanksgiving dinner this year." Keith Lyle was born and raised on the mean streets of Chicago. Well... It was the suburbs, but it was still tough. His house was filled with the loud, loving tirades of his family. Having been immersed in a 2 parent home, the yelling never stopped. Because of this, he had a difficult time fitting in at school. He has been in several commercials and TV shows, and films. His biggest role to date was having 4 lines in the blockbuster movie “The Hangover”.He may have had more screen time as a dead body on CSI, but hey- it's 4 lines in a better movie than Tom Hanks made that year. He also has roles in the films “Holding Lucid” directed by John Bizarre and “A Tribute to Fluffy” directed by Micah Cyrus. Keith co wrote and stars in a new web series currently in production called “Class Clowns”. Keith was honored to be selected as the feature act for headliner Don Barnhart. In the summer of 2012, Keith made his 1st trip overseas to entertain the troops in Kuwait. In 2013, he went to Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Jordan, Spain, Portugal and Greece on 2 separate trips in the "Don Barnhart All Star Comedy Tour" for Armed Forces Entertainment. He went overseas again in October 2014 and again in August of 2015 as part the “Battle Comics” Tour for AFE. Keith spent most of 2017 &2018 as the House Emcee at Jokesters Comedy Club in Las Vegas. Between stand up gigs in 2019, Keith diversified his resume by acting in plays “Driving Miss Daisy” (as “Boolie”) as well as “The House of Tomorrow”. He is also an original member on the Pro Team roster for improv juggernaut Comedysportz Las Vegas franchise. He currently is part of the House Emcee rotation at Delirious Comedy Club & Jokesters Comedy Club in Las Vegas. He has also hosted a week each for the popular websites Tweet the Joke and Dear Comic and had the most online votes in the Improv's "Up Yours Contest”.He's sold jokes to numerous comedians, written and performed sketches for stage & YouTube, and is a popular podcast guest. Keith is active on social media with over 79,000 Twitter followers, and countless friends on Facebook, Instagram & TikTok. Get ready to meet one of my comedy heroes, but only if you can handle a LOT of profanity. George Carlin, following the path of his mentor, Lenny Bruce, kicked the doors of censorship down so people like myself could have careers in comedy, and not worry about being arrested for saying something "obscene."  Today, we learn about the amazing, prolific, inspiring life of George Carlin - how a boy raised by a single mother in New York City grew up to become a radio DJ, then part of two man comedy team, then a solo nightclub act who first achieved success after some early struggles as a clean-cut, mainstream comic. He next decided to follow his counterculture leanings only to lose it all, rebuild into something better, nearly lose it all again, and then become the Carlin of legend. Carlin battled a crippling cocaine addiction, domestic problems at home, a business that wrote him off numerous times, battles with a government that tried to censor him over and over again, and much more to end up with fourteen HBO comedy specials and the designation of one of the best, if not THE best to ever do it - the father of modern standup. Myself and the rest of the comedy community owe him a huge debt of gratitude, and I'm excited to share his life with you here today, on another biographical episode, of Timesuck. Bad Magic Productions Monthly Patreon Donation:  In honor of the passing of Jeff Burton from the Rizzuto Show aka the Rizz Show on 105.7 FM in St Louis, we are donating $16,640 to Jeff's charity of choice - Kids Rock Cancer.
