Team Player - Stories of Coaching and Leadership

We have a great episode today with a guy that I had met in passing over the years but never really got to visit with, and boy was it worth the wait as Coach had so many great stories and lessons to share with us. He is now the Head Football Coach and Campus Athletic Coordinator at my alma mater, Fort Bend Austin High School - welcome Trey Herrmann to the show! - Growing up in the Bear Creek area and wearing the iconic Kelly Green of the Mayde Creek Rams! Coach was in Katy during a time when he could still go hunt ducks before school in the area that is now Cinco Ranch! - Playing for Mayde Creek means you get to play for legendary long-time Head Coach Joe Sheffy - Trey shares some great Joe Sheffy stories and talks about the contempt he felt at the time for his fellow Katy ISD brethren at Katy and Taylor high! - Coach talks about getting his first head coaching job at Bellaire HS and shares a laugh out loud story of the "flip this fieldhouse" moments he had with Fort Bend Travis Head Coach Trey Sissom, as well as some Mission Impossible moments he had scaling walls to break into his own office! - After getting his feet wet at Bellaire, Trey talks about being a part of a dramatic turnaround at Katy Taylor as well as some interesting insights into how kids in small towns play for different reasons many a time, and how perhaps the mindset of his kids at Danbury were more like the kids in Fort Bend and Katy in 1997 than in 2023. - Finally as a man who is now approaching his 5th Head Coaching stop Coach Hermann shares with us his definitive personal Mount Rushmore with one player from each of his four previous stops! Veronica O. Davis writes about that in her new book, Inclusive Transportation: A Manifesto for Repairing Divided Communities. Then, we revisit the city's contract with ShotSpotter. The company detects shots fired and informs police so they can investigate. What do we make of Houston police saying it's contributing to slowed response times for other emergencies? How can we support educators in the wake of a significant change, such as integrating newcomers into schools after dissolving all designated newcomer centers? What techniques can be used to best support teachers who are inexperienced with newcomers, including structuring PD and harnessing campus leadership? What is a good approach when preparing staff, families, and other stakeholders for a significant structural change to a school program such as this? We're closing out Season 10 of the Highest Aspirations podcast with a topic that is important for everyone working in schools. While your district may not currently have large numbers of newcomers, it is almost certain teachers in your schools will be lucky enough to work with students coming to this country for a variety of reasons. We can learn a lot from colleagues working in places where newcomers have been part of the fabric of their school communities for decades. One such school district is Katy ISD, just outside of Houston, Texas. Katy has been known for its newcomer centers for years - so much so that people from other districts have visited them to learn more about how to create similar programs. But the disruption caused by the pandemic forced district leaders at Katy to make significant changes - and the result has been magical.  I sat down with Kimberly Mitchell, Instructional Officer for Secondary ESL at Katy ISD to talk about how the challenge her district was facing turned into an opportunity, and how other districts can learn from their journey. From change management to rolling out PD programs with very little time, Kimberly shares a wealth of ideas and resources that will encourage you to rethink traditional newcomer programs and energize teachers in the face of significant transitions.  I hope you enjoy this last episode of the season. We'll be back in August for Season 11, but in the meantime, please visit our EL Community to access all our free resources, including every episode of the Highest Aspirations podcast.  Kimberly Mitchell holds a Bachelor of Arts in Literature and a Master's of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis on literacy from the University of Texas at Arlington. She began her career in Alvin, Texas teaching English as a Second Language at the high school and junior high levels. Since then she has worked in the Office of Other Languages for Katy ISD in Texas. Currently, she is the Instructional Officer for Secondary ESL. School Choice Creates PovertyIn this episode we are going to discuss what “school choice” is and how it directly correlates to poverty. School Choice is about school funding, and the unconstitutional idea of having the "money" follow the student versus the "money" going into the public education system. We will talk about what happens when you take public school money out of public schools. It is imperative to understand that public education is not failing because of what is coming out, public education is failing because of what we are putting in.Let's “stop the steal” of public education dollars for for-profit schools.Highlights:School fundingGovernment assistanceHigh school diplomasEducation rankingEducation spendingAccountabilityRead more:Texas Constitutional Amendments May 2022 ElectionMost educated statesWelfare assistance per state rankingTexas lags in per-student funding : $9,606 per studentWe rank 38th in the nation on student spending.49th in the nation with  high school diplomas. We rank 39th in education as a whole.TANF: Temporary Assistance Needy FamiliesIn Hasidic Enclaves, Failing Schools Flush with Public Money“But in 2019, the school, the Central United Talmudical Academy, agreed to give state standardized tests in reading and math to more than 1,000 students.Every one of them failed.”Katy Tax Rate Election“The November ballot would ask voters to ratify the M&O Tax Rate. The ballot language is set by state law and is unfortunately confusing.  Because the state has mandated that school districts reduce their M&O tax rates, Katy ISD would be asking its community to sustain the current tax rate. The ballot would read as follows:“Would you vote for or against ratifying the ad valorem tax rate of $1.3517 for Katy ISD for the current year, a rate that will result in an increase of 14.7% in maintenance and operations tax revenue for the district for the current year as compared to the preceding year, which is an additional $65,281,305?”WHAT THIS MEANS: A vote “FOR” means you are voting to sustain the current school district tax rate of $1.3517.”Further your knowledge:Read: San Antonio v.
