In the latest episode of Stories from the River, host Charlie Malouf, welcomes Stephen Knopp, Regional Vice President, Corporate Chaplains of America, and Tim Sayles, Director, Faciliites & Construction, Broad River Retail. Stephen explains what chaplaincy is and how Corporate Chaplains are caregivers in the workplace for employees and family members of employees.  Stephen shares his journey from West Virginia then to NC State and Duke, eventually leading to coming a chaplain with Corporate Chaplains of America and then to his current role, emphasizing the organization's recent growth from 180 to 400 chaplains across the contiguous United States.  Stephen illustrates how critical caring for employees in the workplace through chaplaincy programs has become, citing the increased relevance of such programs given the surge of loneliness, isolation, and mental health challenges amplified by the pandemic.  Tim speaks to his personal motivation for overseeing the chaplaincy program, reflecting on his background with churches and community support. Tim has overseen the Corporate Chaplains program at Broad River since its launch nearly five years ago, and has seen it grow to where it is now with 20 chaplains covering 34 locations. They discuss why Broad River Retail introduced Corporate Chaplains of America to its Memory Makers at Purpose 8:28 in 2019, which was essentially to care for its people with purpose.  The Corporate Chaplain program is Employee Care (i.e., Memory Maker Care) and it's there when a Memory Maker needs it.  When crisis comes or when life happens, that's most likely when you might need a chaplain. The aspects of the Corporate Chaplain program are that it is confidential, anonymous, permission-based, available 24/7/365, and the chaplaincy program does not try to push religion or religious beliefs on anyone. They dive into the significance of the corporate chaplaincy program offered to the Memory Makers at Broad River Retail. Highlighting the importance of caring for and providing Memory Makers with chaplain services to help them through personal challenges that impact them or even a member of their family, such as grief counseling, financial struggles, stress and anxiety, relationship problems, depression, isolation, loneliness, illness and mental health issues.  When it was launched at Broad River in the Fall of 2019, the program initially featured chaplains visiting the company's facilities weekly, but it has evolved with technology advancements, such as with the telachap QR code app, to maintain support during the COVID-19 pandemic, which curbed in-person interactions for a period of time.   They continue the conversation with the various aspects of the chaplaincy service, including its remarkable utilization rate being significantly higher than that of traditional Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs). This, they attribute to the culture of care that Corporate Chaplains of America fosters within companies, positioning chaplains not just as confidants, but also as liaisons to additional resources like EAPs.  The episode illustrates the broader impact of the chaplaincy program, both within Broad River Retail, and across other businesses, underlining the program's role in nurturing an organization's well-being. “Death used to be an executioner, but the gospel has made him a gardener.” – George Herbert It's the thing no one wants to talk about, but what every human will eventually face. Despite our best medical advances and enjoyable distractions, death is inescapable. But two thousand years ago, as he comforted a beloved friend whose home had been visited by death, Jesus Christ proclaimed: “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”In this special Easter message, Nussbaum Chaplain Jim Revelle helps us face the taboo topic of death – not with resolve or human courage, but through faith in the power of Jesus' death and resurrection. Far from being the end, Jim reminds us that death for followers of Jesus is actually the door to real, eternal life. The question is, will we believe? In Mike's interview with Chris, Chris addresses some things we could specifically be doing with our Christian foundations. The two major points are listening to other people and seeking a better understanding. These things are inherent in how we need to act moving forward. We as Christ-followers need to listen better. We need to seek understanding first and with that understanding, we can push forward to a better tomorrow. How are you listening to other people today? How are you seeking understanding? Tell us in your own words on Facebook so we can all learn from you!   Appreciating People   Another big obstacle we face is stress during these times. This is probably the most stressful work-life situation we have all been through. COVID has changed everyone's lives across the world and we are just now seeking to do something after the initial shock. Appreciating people needs to be at the top of our list. How do we appreciate people? Chris talks about several ways to do so but the first step is being genuine to your friends, family, and coworkers about how you don't take them for granted. Asking simply "How are you?" and listening to those answers are just as important as well. How do you appreciate your co-workers? Your family? Friends? Maybe it is time to change some habits to make it clear!   Connect with Chris Chris' LinkedIn Corporate Chaplains Of America Chris' Email     Connect With Follower Of One Join us over in our Online Community, get social with us; Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn and subscribe to our YouTube channel. What You'll Hear: How Chris saw Adding Silhouettes as God's mission for his car business They have tried and implemented several ways to add silhouettes, including a different sales model, hiring a corporate chaplain, putting Bibles in the lobby and in the glove box of new cars It took much longer to implement the first change than he ever imagined.  He lost confidence in himself and the business actually was losing money.  He leaned heavily on the Psalms and hired a consultant "Doing Businss by the Book" by Larry Burkett showed him how to read Proverbs with business glasses He doesn't argue with those who say faith should be a private matter, but he feels scripture directs us differently We have to continually remind ourselves that our identity doesn't come from our work but from God If you have conflict with others at work, remember that they're wired differently from you If you want to share the gospel at work, focus on building intentional relationships Intro Chris Patton is President of the Mike Patton Auto Family in LaGrange, Georgia, operators of Honda, Ford, Lincoln, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram franchises. Along with his brother (and partner) Brian, Chris is a third-generation owner and grew up working in every department in the business, beginning at the age of 10. He assumed his current position as President/CEO in 2000.   The Mike Patton Auto Family has approximately 100 employees and retailed over 2,000 new and used vehicles in 2015. Chris also writes a blog called Christian Faith at Work.  He is writing it to business owners and leaders who are trying to figure out how to integrate their Christian faith into their businesses. By including the resources accumulated over the past nine years of learning to use the business as a vehicle for ministry, as well as real-life examples from his experiences, Chris teaches readers how to run their business from an eternal perspective. Chris and his wife Kim live in LaGrange, GA with their three children. Q&A* When Did You Become  a Christian? 10 years old.  Grew up in the church.  At my Grandmother's house. Asked her questions and I knelt at her green vinyl couch. Tell Us About Your Business and This Concept of Silhouettes I came to realize God wanted more from me than just Sundays and that He put me in business to impact people and do ministry through that business. I came across 1 Corinthians 3.  Whatever we build will be tested by fire on judgment day.  I pictured our business being scorched and tested by fire and all that was left were Silhouettes, those who had been impacted for eternity by the business.  My mission became adding silhouettes. List For Us A Few Ways You Live Out Your Faith Through Your Car Dealership We moved from a commission based pay system to a flat pay system, so they're incentivised to do what's best for the customer. We rewrote our Mission Statement and Vision Statement and made sure they were faith based. We hired a chaplain through Corporate Chaplains of America.  He comes by twice a week and leads two Bible studies. We put a New Testament copy called "Owner's Manual for Life" in the glove box with each new car sold. We have pocket copies of the Gospel of John in the waiting area. I give a devotional monthly. New hire training I teach a one hour training session on our values. We have an employee crisis fund. Talk About the Process of this Transformation This does not happen overnight.  The first transition to the new sales model took 18 months and I underestimated the rate at which people can change. My advice would be to pick one thing, make sure you think it through, involve your leadership team, and make sure it's right before taking on something else. Be patient, but once it's not working,
