Michael E. Nolan was born in Royal Oak, Michigan, but grew up in Columbus, Ohio. He is the son of an Irish-American sailor who married a beautiful Puerto Rican from a good family. His dad would spend a few decades, after leaving the Navy and having a stint at the University of Michigan, engaged in various creative entrepreneurial endeavours until he eventually became a farrier, invented the Nolan Hoof Plate, and enjoyed some modest success towards the end of his days. The entrepreneurial roller coaster of his father's life, however, was offset by Michael's mother who provided the family with some stability through her own employment at the Ohio State University and the support of her family back in Puerto Rico.Once he turned eighteen, Michael joined the military as an infantryman and eventually served in the Marine Corps, Marine Corps Reserves, and the Army National Guard between the years 1990 to 2016. During his military service, he participated in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, Operation Provide Promise/Deny Flight, and United Nations Operation Somalia with 1st Battalion, 8th Marines. With the 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines he participated in Joint Task Force Six along the U.S.-Mexican border. He also did two tours in Iraq, first with the 1452nd Transportation Company in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 04-05, and then with the 3rd Battalion, 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 07-08. His military decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Achievement Medal (3 awards), Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal (7 awards), and the Combat Infantryman's Badge among others.During this time, Michael graduated magna cum laude in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Franklin University. He also holds a Master of Business Administration degree (2006) from the University of Phoenix as well as a Master of Science degree in National Resource Strategy (2013) from The Eisenhower School at National Defense University where Michael was an Afghanistan/Pakistan Fellow and a member of the Land Combat Systems industry study. He also has almost twenty years of civilian service in both the defence and intelligence arenas that included roles as the Chief Financial Officer for the standup of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency as well as a Senior Advisor to the Ministry of Defense of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.Having been raised by an entrepreneur and seeing first-hand how to start, build, and eventually sell a business, Michael was always tinkering with businesses of his own. This ranged from ventures as diverse as farrier services to a business brokerage. Michael's passion, however, always seemed to lie with financial related endeavours. He found success helping clients in both real estate and as a foreign exchange proprietary trader before settling into the management of his own portfolio and shifting his attention to writing. Now, Michael focuses his time and efforts on producing high-quality content focused on the warrior tradition. When he's not working, Michael enjoys spending time practising the martial arts. He is a lifelong martial artist having studied various arts from all over the world but focusing his efforts primarily on the Chinese martial arts. He studied Wing Chun and Tai Chi from Dr Fred Ming-An Wu starting in 1983 until Dr Wu's death in 2000, excepting periods of military service. Currently, Michael studies Shuai Chiao in Northern Virginia under Master Nick Masi, a student of Dr Daniel Chi-hsiu Weng, himself a top disciple of the world-renowned Grandmaster Chang Tung-Sheng. Lawrence Peck v. Swift Transportation Company
25AUG1968: Serving in the 62nd Transportation Company of the 7th Transportation Group, SGT William Seay and his men took off with a convoy of 81 trucks to resupply the American units at Tay Ninh Combat Base in Vietnam. In the midst of the route, the enemy struck, ambushing the column with machine gun fire and rockets. As vehicles at the head and rear of the convoy were disabled, Seay and many others found themselves trapped with nowhere to go. Their only option to fight it out until help arrived, SGT Seay dismounted his vehicle and took cover. In short order, the enemy began movement through the kill zone to wipe out Seay and his men. As they did so, a grenade was thrown that landed next to Seay under an ammunition trailer. Without hesitation, Seay picked it up and threw it back, killing four enemy soldiers and saving the lives of the men nearby. Seay did this once more that day before being severely wounded in the right arm. Continuing to fight and motivate his men to hold on, Seay noticed a group of enemy soldiers maneuvering on his position. Although unable to use his right arm, Seay attacked, firing with his left as he went. After killing the three attackers, Seay returned to American lines where he was later killed by enemy fire. For his bravery that day in helping hold off the enemy attack until reinforcements could arrive, SGT William Seay would be awarded, posthumously, the Medal of Honor.

“I don't think I'm any better than anybody else. I've learned over the years, but it's very different. One of the things that was very difficult for me to comprehend was how I'm viewed because I'm that kid from the street. I didn't ever forget that — no matter how old I get. I've realized the power of my presence.” — Jerry Brazie

And I had that specific epiphany, shut up and listen.” — Jerry Brazie

Jason Goldsmith of Powell is a 37-year-old Iraq War veteran who was part of the U.S. Army’s 660th Transportation Company based in Zanesville. Goldsmith enlisted in 2000. At the time, he said, he couldn’t envision actually participating in a war type of scenario. “When I initially joined, I – not in the wildest dreams – would I have thought that I would be deployed to a combat zone,” he said. “I mean it did cross my mind, but it was just such a far-off scenario. We were nine years from Desert Storm, so you tend to take that current data and project it forward, like it’s going to happen forever.” Goldsmith’s company was mobilized in 2003 and went to Kuwait that December, several months after the March 20 “Shock and Awe” campaign in which U.S. and coalition forces had launched nearly 1,700 air attacks against Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein’s regime and soon after Hussein’s capture in December. His company crossed into Iraq in January 2004. Goldsmith, who was stationed at the Logistical Support Area Anaconda near Balad, was injured one evening in April 2004 as a result of a land-mine explosion during a convoy mission. He recalled waking up that morning, April 9, feeling different, “somewhat unexplainable.” It was the same day an American fuel convoy from the 13th Corps Support Command had come under attack near the Baghdad International Airport, he said. Most units had been ordered to stay off the roads because of known ambushes, he said, but his unit was ordered to mobilize because it was responsible for hauling “very sensitive, very important” materials toward Fallujah. Goldsmith said towns along the route were unusually quiet – towns in which families and children typically were active and playing. “Nothing,” he said. “So you kinda knew something was going to happen.” He was near Haditha when the ambush occurred. “After the initial explosion, I was the lead gunner in the convoy. We were later hit with mortars,” he said. A fellow soldier protected him by lying on him while his vest was off and they were attending to him. Goldsmith sustained injuries to his ankle, knee, head and face and returned to the Walter Reed Army Medical Center (now Walter Reed National Military Medical Center) in Washington, D.C. Goldsmith, a Purple Heart recipient, said the healing process was difficult while he was at Walter Reed, adding that he had mixed feelings. “While it was good to be stateside, I was in a hospital while my unit was still overseas in harm’s way,” he said. “I felt as if I had let my unit down.” In addition to the Purple Heart, Goldsmith’s decorations include the Combat Action Badge, the Army Commendation Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Medal. Goldsmith was born and raised in Zanesville and graduated from Philo High School in 1999 before attending college first at Ohio State and then earning his bachelor’s degree in finance from DePaul University in 2013 and his master’s in financial planning in 2018.
