Tahlia Edmonds is an 18-year-old gymnast, dancer, landscaper and inspiring advocate hailing from Country Victoria. Raised on a farm, Tahlia cherishes the simplicity and hard work of rural life. She wakes up early each day to milk goats and work on her farm, embodying the spirit of a true country girl. From a young age, Tahlia was drawn to the joy of movement and expression, dreaming of becoming a ballerina or a gymnast. Despite the hardships she faced in the aftermath of the Black Saturday Bushfires in 2009, which took everything from her family except the clothes they were wearing, her passion for dance and gymnastics never wavered. The trauma of the disaster, the deadliest bushfire in her neighborhood, left a lasting impact on Tahlia and her family. The Edmonds' family home was reduced to ashes, their community devastated and the process of rebuilding their lives continues to this day. Yet Tahlia has always strived to keep her spirits high, using her experiences to empathise with others who have been through similar ordeals. Despite the financial constraints brought about by the fires, Tahlia kept her dream alive, seizing every opportunity to practice her handstands and dance movements. Her dedication paid off when, at 13, she was gifted a term of rhythmic gymnastics for her birthday. This sparked a journey that led her to state competitions and further exploration of acrobatics and ballet. Today, Tahlia balances her time between working as a landscaper and gymnastics coach, assisting in outdoor education, and contributing to her family's business. She aspires to use her platform, such as her participation in Miss Grand Australia, to advocate for individuals who have experienced the trauma of natural disasters. Driven by her past, Tahlia seeks to change the future for others, giving a voice to the broken and extending a helping hand to those who are suffering. Ludwina Dautovic introduces a new segment to The Room Xchange podcast called The Room Xchange Stories. These stories will provide insights and tips about house-sharing and will also include some of her own personal stories. The first one is about women helping women and is a very personal story for Ludwina. As the CEO and Founder of The Room Xchange, she has to deal with the complexities of leading the company as well as continuously hearing about the difficulties everyday people are facing in regards to housing. After feeling incredibly exhausted at the end of last year, Ludwina put out a call for a place to stay for a few weeks to take a break and reset. Elizabeth, who had been a household listed on their platform, replied and Ludwina moved in two days later. Elizabeth, a single mother, businesswoman and counsellor, welcomed Ludwina into her mud brick home on a ten acre property in Country Victoria. Ludwina was in awe of the cedar wood and silk walls, and French doors that opened out to a balcony with deers roaming in the garden. She felt grounded and supported by Elizabeth and her 16 year old daughter.  Elizabeth encouraged her to make herself at home. Ludwina observed the dynamic and vibe of the household, feeling the groove of the home and understanding the personalities of the two people who lived there. This conversation provided insight into the perspective of being a housemate in someone else's home. Ludwina talks about her experience of living as a housemate. She emphasises the importance of setting clear house rules and respecting how the household runs. She suggests that getting a handle on how the household works quickly will help the person fit in and connect in a deeper way. She also talks about how they discussed food, house cleaning and expectations as a housemate, and how being flexible helped her fit in. Ludwina emphasises the importance of having regular conversations and suggests having meals together as a way to connect.Key moments in this podcast 0:00:00 Women Helping Women: A Room Xchange Story0:03:04 The Room Xchange: A Story of Resilience and Connection0:04:42 Exploring the Idyllic Setting of a Mud Brick Home in Country Victoria0:06:46 Exploring the Benefits of Housemate Exchange: Reflections on Establishing House Rules and Building Connections0:08:10 Creating a Positive Living Environment: Tips for Successful Housemate Relationships0:15:05 Reflection on House Sharing: Creating Lifelong Friendships 0:17:57 Benefits of House Sharing0:19:35 Exploring the Power of Women Helping Women: Reflections from a Housemate ExperienceContact The Room Xchange Tweet us at @theroomxchange and @LudwinaDautovic Share a story on instagram @theroomxchange Email us at admin@theroomxchange.com Please leave us a reviewClick here for Apple reviewsConnect on our socialsYoutube | Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Linkedin Sign up on our websitewww.theroomxchange.com

Ep 195 - Creating a 6-venue group based on music, theatre and happiness in country victoria with Andy Pobjoy from Piano Bar This week's guest Andy Pobjoy is a singer, multi-instrumentalist, cruise ship entertainer, live streamer, father of two, and founder of Piano Bar. Performing in church from age ten, weddings at age fourteen, and nightclubs from age sixteen, Andy has said “yes” to every gig imaginable, performing at conferences, events, resorts, and luxury cruise liners in six continents. In 2015, against all “good advice”, Andy took the plunge into small business, opening the original fifty-seat Piano Bar in Geelong. The concept was an overnight hit, and since then, Piano Bar Group has grown exponentially, with six venues across regional Victoria and Melbourne, I feel very excited to have Andy on this week's podcast. In this podcast we discuss: -How Andy got you excited about performing early on. -Why Andy made you make the leap into being a venue owner. -What Piano Bar did to survive COVID times and keep the revenue flowing. -What changes have been made to the business since the first Piano Bar started, and how that has elevated the brand to another level and allowed them to scale to multiple venues. -How he is feeling about the entertainment industry moving forward coming out of covid, and what exciting projects does the group have on the horizon. In this episode, we meet Sarah, mother of 4 with 3 boys and a little girl. She joined us to share her amazing story just two weeks into her postpartum (and feeling absolutely amazing!) She lives in Rural, Country Victoria and grew up in a big Dutch family & very trusting of the medical system. Sarah had a miscarriage with their first pregnancy which required a D&C in hospital. She fell pregnant again soon after. Sarah tells a very complex and interesting story that is long, but very interesting and full of insights and birth wisdom. Here's an overview of some of what happened (as it's too long to put all the information here). Sarah had a private midwife during this pregnancy and was booked into a birth house. Her waters broke around 41+6 and she eventually ended up in hospital due to the length of labour and waters broken. Pitocin and a painful labour with a shift change and a horrible midwife she ended up in surgery and her baby was born. Second pregnancy only 3-4 months postpartum she was pregnant again. She was in the VBAC clinic she felt supported in pregnancy but had bait and switch at 38 weeks which ended in a visit from CPS at 41 weeks. She felt unheard during labour telling the health support something was wrong with her baby and he eventually after a MET call was made after birth, ended up in special care for a week with sepsis. Sarah ended up having another surgical birth. Third birth arah hired a doula who had a VBAC and she felt supported through her pregnancy. And she planned a homebirth. She couldn't get her head into the game of being in labour when her contractions came on hard and fast. Sarah feels she handed over her power to the doula who made little comments throughout her labour about the positioning, of the baby whereas she felt she needed someone who going to support her to keep going not put doubt into her mind. She transferred and had a surgical birth. Baby number four Sarah fell pregnant around 9 months postpartum and she decided she wanted to have a C-Section with this baby. She did not want to fight the system and wanted to just have an easy time of it all. Sarah went and saw Birthtime and decided she was going to have a freebirth. She didn't want any support people around her, just her and her husband and she was trusting the process. She didn't want to give any of her power away. She felt if she was going to birth her baby vaginally she had to do it. Sarah went on to birth her baby vaginally. A FBA3C and fer kicked in, on all fours she was completely silent and grunting at the end of each push. She said "she overcame all the trauma, the pain, the doubt" and it was a magic half hour where she felt she wasn't doing anything and just breathing and her baby girl was born. She didn't feel the "ring of fire" just a stretch. She was so excited, it felt amazing and after her baby was born she just kept repeating "I did it, I did it". Sarah is on a birth high after this birth and is enjoying her baby girl after 3 boys. Find out more on how I can support you + you can have me as your guide + biggest supporter - Click here! Whilst also defining what he deems 'fat skinny' to be. Sam (overtime) has inherited the idea of not giving a crap of what others may think of him. The idea of allowing yourself to showcase your inner vulnerability. Sam also talks about how he came to the decision of moving from Country Victoria to Brisbane. As he describes it as a journey of 'seeking discomfort'. Setting attainable short-term goals is also discussed, whilst reaching that point of self acceptance when achieving a certain 'goal'. Sam's next big 'goal' is to be able to go for a long distance run with his shirt off. Not for an ego boost, but as a confidence builder. The main message that is to come out of this episode, is to not be afraid to be you.

The rookie teacher at the tiny country school was startled during morning recess when some of the kids ran into the single weatherboard classroom, yelling: "There's a man outside with a gun." Rob Hunter had been the sole teacher at the Gippsland town of Wooreen for just nine days - his first posting after three years at teachers' college. He was 20 years old. Maree Young was his student, she was just 11 years old. The man with the revolver and wearing a Collingwood beanie as a balaclava was Geelong Prison escapee Edwin John "Ted" Eastwood, 26, who five years earlier pulled the same crime 270 kilometres away, kidnapping a teacher and six students from Faraday. It was February 14, 1977. In the next 21 hours they would experience a car crash, a night imprisoned at a remote campsite, an escape, police pursuit, a shootout and a wounding before final rescue. Cathie decided then and there she would lead an epic life! Over the 2 decades since Cathie Reid and her 2nd husband Stuart Giles slowly but strategically built up one of Australia's largest private pharmacy groups – Epic Pharmacy, for aged care facilities and private hospitals -- and integrated cancer care services group, Icon Cancer Care. They did it without a well-known brand name; they worked with competitors, not against them; and they had to put their tears and fears when the Global Financial crisis swamped them in 2008, to one side to work their way out of a deep mire of debt. Along that journey to build their impressive business, and create serious wealth, she's managed to indulge her AFL passion (once a Victorian, always a Victorian!), as a Brisbane Lions board member and become a philanthropist, through their Epic Good foundation.  In Part 1 of my chat, Cathie Reid reveals how they bootstrapped & built their business, how failure is never far away, and what she's learned as a startup queen and a leader of people. Renowned for its fine wine and craft beer, Victoria's High Country region can now claim whisky among its regional specialties.Backwoods Distilling was founded in 2017 by husband-and-wife team Leigh and Bree Attwood in the small town of Yackandandah.Backwoods' whiskies are produced using 100% Australian farmed and malted grains from Voyager Craft Malt, located across the border in the Riverina region of NSW.They mature their whisky exclusively in barrels that have previously held Australian wine and whisky, where possible using ex-wine casks from local wineries such as Sorrenberg in Beechworth and Scion in Rutherglen.Backwoods' first whiskies – a Rye and a Single Malt – were released in August 2020, with both selling out in less than 24 hours. We meet the Attwoods with Leigh currently preparing to finish up his full-time teaching job in order to focus purely on the Backwoods Distilling business.

Today, we speak to Melissa and Donavan Jacka from Tolpuddle Cheese in Victoria's high Country. To start, and with hand on heart, I have to say I owe a lot to these guys in the context of helping me undertand and … illustrate to me .. what it takes to make truly great Australia cheese. It came in the form of the best emails I've ever received … from anyone! As for its contents, I explain further into this podcast but I will tell you that it was immediate reminder that great quality, artisan cheese is a labour of absolute love. And something that is not in in-exhaustible supply. Like so many businesses in 2020, Tolpuddle had to adapt and fast, to not only the impact of the unprecedented Australia bushfires at the start of 2020, but again as COVID-19 hit. As hard as it was, they drew strength from those around them and it was that genuine , and powerful, sense of community, both local and social, that has seen them through. Ever heard of sponsoring a goat anyone??? We talk a lot about collaboration and not competition here on this podcast and today is no exception. I'm forever blown away by the resilience .. and good sense of humour, so many farmers and cheese makers have. Yes, it in indeed tough times but do not ask to save Melissa and Donavan … as thanks to their incredible hard work, and their collaborative spirit, they've got this. What we should do instead is champion and celebrate all in which they, and all Australian cheese makers, do. I'm sure you'll be able to tell, I really enjoyed this chat and hope you do too
