Show Notes: Scott Markman, founder of MonogramGroup, discusses his journey as an entrepreneur and the challenges he faces in the private equity sector. Scott kicks off the conversation with a quick introduction to his podcast, "Beer Stories for Private Equity," which focuses on issues related to the firms, companies they own, and consultants. About the Agency Scott founded the agency, MonogramGroup, in 1990. The agency has evolved from a design firm to a full-fledged agency, with a focus on brand expertise and deliverables. Services include research, insights, positioning strategy, ideation around who or what is a brand today versus tomorrow, building out content, and creating a reservoir of assets. They also address the complexity of audiences, competitors, and going to market. For example, Starbucks has a single brand but must address specific needs for consumers, employees, coffee growers, Wall Street, and social media audiences. Scott talks about the agency's work and how they serve their market. Defining Brand Scott defines brand as two things: the DNA of an organization, which is connected to the ‘why' of an organization, relating to Simon Sinek's definition of a company's mission, which should connect to all aspects of the brand. The second is that the brand is the everything and Scott explains how this ties to all aspects of the company. This approach has been successful for them serving large global brands for about 20 years, including Life Fitness, Mintel and Sensata, the world's largest maker of sensors for vehicles. A Focus on Private Equity and a New Brand The agency's focus turned to private equity firms when Scott was introduced to the sector in 1996. They created a brand called Antares Capital, which is the largest provider of credit to PE middle market deals. The success of this brand earned recognition across the private equity sector in North America. The practice has since grown to include 90 clients, and over this period, they have interviewed investment bankers, representatives, institutional capital, pension funds, foundations, insurance companies, hired CEOs, founders, and sellers of businesses to private equity, which has given them in-depth knowledge in this field. Among agencies, there is typically a competitive conflict issue where working for two competitive companies is not allowed. The Role of Branding in Private Equity Firms The conversation turns to the role of branding in private equity firms (PE firms) and their portfolio companies. Scott explains that the business model is to get gigs with PE firms or lenders, but now it is secondary to engagements with portfolio companies. The primary goal is to create relationships with PE firms, building trust and proving themselves. He also discusses the concept of differentiating between PE firms and portfolio companies. Private equity firms are pattern recognizers, template driven, and risk-averse, making them more likely to follow similar practices unlike venture capital. Scott talks about developing distinctive messaging and differentiation for private equity firms when there is a proliferation of thousands of firms following the same patterns in branding. Private equity firms can be categorized into three levels: top, middle, and lower middle market. Scott offers examples of each level and where his agency has served clients and why they focus on serving the lower-middle market. The Diagnostic Guide to Branding Scott talks about Umbrex's diagnostic guide to branding, which is a comprehensive document on the subject matter. He talks about categories within the framework which are a great way to rate a brand on sub-topic factors such as brand strategy, communication, marketing, and customer experience. Scott suggests that this framework could be applied to look at levels A, B, C, and D of complexity and rigor, and then compress and streamline it into a degree of detail and actionability commensurate with the company's size and future goals. For example, if a consultant or small consulting firm is asked to analyze a 30-page deck of data points, they could apply this framework to their clients and present it in a more concise and actionable manner. The major categories of brand strategy in the diagnostic guide include overall, communication, marketing, customer experience, and corporate responsibility. Each sub area has 28 slides with a maturity model to rate it from nascent to optimized. This resource is designed to allow users to draw from relevant slides for various aspects of a company's branding, such as communication function and/or brand positioning. A Discussion on Brand Architecture Scott shares information from a document developed in response to a PE firm client who wanted to build a master brand from four foundational companies, and one from a company that had a foundational brand with several add-ons and needed a unified brand. Scott's agency developed their own four buckets: brand architecture factors, assets and sophistication of the brands, business factors, and PE firm factors. Scott states that private equity firms have a daily focus on priority and responsibility, which can make it difficult for them to prioritize the brand over other aspects. He explains that the firm's branding diagnostic involves two main processes: an in-person information gathering and whiteboarding session with all the leaders, and a detailed set of Zoom interviews. They look for interaction, behavior, responses to questions, and the physical environment of the room. This qualitative approach is important for understanding the design of a space and identifying what other people want. The firm also conducts detailed Zoom interviews with external audiences, customers, channel partners, and suppliers. In summary, MonogramGroup offers a comprehensive branding assessment process that includes in-person meetings, detailed interviews, and external research. Their approach is based on observation, creativity, and a thorough understanding of the organization's brand. Get ready for an enlightening discussion with Lyndsie Bourgon as we unpack the complex world of illegal timber harvesting on the West Coast. Bourgon, whose fascination with the topic began with a 2012 news story about stolen old-growth cedar in British Columbia, provides a fresh perspective on tree poaching. We go beyond the black-and-white narrative of "bad people doing bad things" to reveal the deep economic, cultural, and historical roots that drive individuals to engage in this illicit activity. Our conversation takes a deep dive into the enduring impact of the timber wars of the early 1990s in Northern California, where the expansion of Redwoods National Park left local communities feeling unheard and betrayed. We explore the flawed economic transitions from logging to tourism, and the societal stigmas around accepting government aid. Listen as we discuss the persistent distrust toward agencies like the Forest Service and National Park Service, and the frustration that fuels resistance to change in these rural communities. In the final segment, we delve into the ethical dilemmas faced by those involved in tree poaching, the environmental damage caused by rushed harvesting, and the specialized skills that poachers take pride in. Borgon also shares her insights into current research on community forest management, highlighting inspiring stories from Scotland's Land Reform Act. This episode challenges conventional thinking and seeks comprehensive, empathetic solutions to the multifaceted issues of illegal timber harvesting. Don't miss out on this captivating conversation that offers a deeper understanding of the socio-economic complexities at play. "In effect, humans have dragged a body with a long hominid history into an overfed, malnourished, sedentary, sunlight-deficient, sleep-deprived, competitive, inequitable, and socially isolating environment with dire consequences." That quote from the book, On the Origin of Being, perfectly encapsulates the evolutionary mismatch of today's population in the modern world; an environment where everything is changing faster than our genes and physiology can keep up with! Luckily, today's guest, Jenny Powers, is one of the author's of that book, which was just released within the last couple of weeks. Jenny spent over three years researching information for the book that perfectly depicts our evolutionary and anthropological history of our hominid ancestors from which we can learn from their way of life. It's clear that we have forgotten how to live according to our evolutionary physiology.Jenny Powers is an accomplished writer, scientist, and athlete. She earned her Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology from the University of Colorado, Denver; her journey as a collegiate basketball player taught her to push physical boundaries even as she continually expanded her intellectual horizons. She is deeply inspired by the exploration of human nature and the study of our ancestors; her role researching and co-authoring On the Origin of Being marks the culmination of this passion to date. Jenny balances her professional endeavors with her roles as a wife and mother in Colorado. In today's conversation, Jenny and I take a deep dive into some of the fascinating and insightful information that is covered in her book, On the Origin of Being. Not only is this historical perspective on how "we" used to live truly captivating, but it also leaves a trail of clues as to how all of us could improve our sleep, nutrition, work and rest, and time spent in nature or observing the natural world to optimize our quality of life in the modern world. Jenny's passion and intellect on these various topics come through during our conversation today. What's the worst that will happen if you try?” - Jenna Kempkes, (14:34) “I hear the word entrepreneurship and I [think] I'm too young. I can't do that. I still feel that way sometimes because it's this scary world and you hear these people and everything they've given up for it…I didn't realize that it could be something I explored safely at the University and that I didn't have to have some big idea…And now I've realized you don't have to start a business to be an entrepreneur.” - Jenna Kempkes, (20:11) “Encourage an open mind. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Announcing Giving Green's 2023 Top Climate Nonprofit Recommendations, published by Giving Green on November 16, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. What is Giving Green? Giving Green is an EA-affiliated charity evaluator that helps donors direct funds to the highest-impact organizations looking to mitigate climate change. We believe that individuals can make a real impact by reshaping the laws, norms, and systems that perpetuate unsustainable emissions. Our annual list of recommendations helps direct donors towards high-impact climate nonprofits advocating for systemic change. How does Giving Green work? We spent the past year finding timely giving strategies that have a huge potential impact but are relatively neglected by traditional climate funding. Our process starts by assessing various impact strategies and narrowing in on ones that we believed could substantially reduce emissions, were feasible, and needed more funding (Figure 1). After developing a short list of impact areas, we explored the ecosystem of nonprofits operating in each space by speaking directly with organizations and other stakeholders. We used our findings to evaluate each organization's theory of change and its capacity to absorb additional funding. For more information, see Giving Green's Research Process. Figure 1: Giving Green's process for identifying and assessing nonprofits What climate nonprofits does Giving Green recommend for 2023? Our findings led us to double down on one pathway where we believe climate donors can have an outsized impact: Advancing key climate technologies through policy advocacy, research, and market support. We think technological progress provides a uniquely powerful and feasible way to decarbonize, allowing the green transition to proceed while minimizing costs to quality of life and the economy. For 2023, we highlight five key sectors ripe for innovation: next-generation geothermal energy, advanced nuclear, alternative protein innovation, industrial decarbonization, and shipping and aviation decarbonization; within those, we recommend six top climate charities (Figure 2). Figure 2: Giving Green's 2023 top climate nonprofit recommendations Below, you will find a brief overview of Giving Green's recommendations in reverse alphabetical order. Project InnerSpace Deep underground, the Earth's crust holds abundant heat that can supply renewable, carbon-free heat and reliable, on-demand electricity. However, conventional geothermal systems have been limited to places bordering the Earth's tectonic plates. Project InnerSpace is fast-tracking next-generation technologies that can make geothermal energy available worldwide. It has a bold plan to reduce financial risks for new geothermal projects, making geothermal energy cheaper and more accessible, especially in densely populated areas in the Global South. We believe Project InnerSpace is a top player in the geothermal sector and that its emphasis on fast technology development and cost reduction can help geothermal expand globally. For more information, see our Project InnerSpace recommendation summary. Opportunity Green Aviation and maritime shipping are challenging sectors to decarbonize and have not received much support from philanthropy in the past. Opportunity Green has a multi-pronged strategy for reducing emissions from aviation and maritime shipping. It pushes for ambitious regulations, promotes clean fuels, encourages companies to adopt greener fleets, and works to reduce demand for air travel. We think Opportunity Green has a strong theory of change that covers multiple ways to make a difference. We are especially excited about Opportunity Green's efforts to elevate climate-vulnerable countries in policy discussions, as we think this could improve the inclusivity of the process and the ambition level of...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Othello-GPT: Reflections on the Research Process, published by Neel Nanda on March 29, 2023 on The AI Alignment Forum. This is the third in a three post sequence about interpreting Othello-GPT. See the first post for context. This post is a detailed account of what my research process was, decisions made at each point, what intermediate results looked like, etc. It's deliberately moderately unpolished, in the hopes that it makes this more useful! The Research Process This project was a personal experiment in speed-running doing research, and I got the core results in in ~2.5 days/20 hours. This post has some meta level takeaways from this on doing mech interp research fast and well, followed by a (somewhat stylised) narrative of what I actually did in this project and why - you can see the file tl_initial_exploration.py in the paper repo for the code that I wrote as I went (using VSCode's interactive Jupyter mode). I wish more work illustrated the actual research process rather than just a final product, so I'm trying to do that here. This is approximately just me converting my research notes to prose, see the section on process-level takeaways for a more condensed summary of my high-level takeaways. The meta level process behind everything below is to repeatedly be confused, plot stuff a bunch, be slightly less confused, and iterate. As a result, there's a lot of pictures! Takeaways on doing mech interp research Warning: I have no idea if following my advice about doing research fast is actually a good idea, especially if you're starting out in the field! It's much easier to be fast and laissez faire when you have experience and an intuition for what's crucial and what's not, and it's easy to shoot yourself in the foot. And when you skimp on rigour, you want to make sure you go back and check! Though in this case, I got strong enough results with the probe that I was fairly confident I hadn't entirely built a tower of lies. And generally, beware of generalising from one example - in hindsight I think I got pretty lucky on how fruitful this project was! Be decisive: Subjectively, by far the most important change was suppressing my perfectionism and trying to be bold and decisive - make wild guesses and act on them, be willing to be less rigorous, etc. If I noticed myself stuck on doing the best or most principled thing, I'd instead try to just do something. Eg I wanted to begin by patching between two similar sequences of moves - I couldn't think of a principled way to change a move without totally changing the downstream game, so I just did the dumb thing of patching by changing the final move. Eg when I wanted to try intervening with the probe, I couldn't think of a principled way to intervene on a bunch of games or to systematically test that this worked, or exactly how best to intervene, so I decided to instead say "YOLO, let's try intervening in the dumbest possible way, by flipping the coefficient at a middle layer, on a single move, and see what happens" Pursue the hypothesis that seems "big if true" Eg I decided to try training a linear probe on just black moves after a hunch that this might work given some suggestive evidence from interpreting neuron L5N1393 Notice when I get stuck in a rabbit hole/stop learning things and move on Eg after training a probe I found it easy to be drawn into eg inspecting more and more neurons, or looking at head attention patterns, and it worked much better to just say Be willing to make quick and dirty hacks Eg when I wanted to look at the max activating dataset examples for neurons, I initially thought I'd want to run the model on thousands to millions of games, to get a real sample size. But in practice, just running the model on a batch of 100 games and taking the top 1% of moves by neuron act in there, worked totally fine...
