Bob Bozic's life story reads like pulp fiction. After a tough upbringing, Bob ran away at 14 and lived on the streets of Toronto. A gangster bookie took him under his wing and taught him to fight. Bob won bout after bout, eventually becoming the amateur heavyweight boxing champ in Canada and fighting Larry Holmes at Madison Square Garden (Bob didn't fare well). After retiring in his 20s, Bob got mixed up in smuggling and attempted to rob a bank, among other crimes. He eventually married and had a child, earning money as a bouncer and bartender — including 25 years behind the bar at Fanelli Cafe in New York City.  Bob's new book, "So what happens is..." comes out in June. Check out his June 9 book launch at Fanelli.  This episode is sponsored by Berg + Moss Architects, a small architecture studio based in Beacon.  Since 1999, Berg + Moss has specialized in housing, hospitality, healthcare and adaptive re-use of historic structures throughout the Hudson Valley and tri-state area.

But she also has a new movie out called The True Adventures of Wolfboy, about a young “Wolfboy” who is on the lam in search of his estranged mother. Olivia is on the show this week to talk about a similarly fantastical film, The City of Lost Children. She and April dive deep into the human elements of the movie, as well as the freedom that comes with working in genre cinema. Olivia also talks about the relationship between writing the script and actually realizing the crazy things the writer wrote. And she reveals the importance of strange-looking actors and reclaiming the word “freak.”Please consider financially supporting our show by becoming a Maximum Fun member at Maximumfun.org/joinYou can watch The True Adventures of Wolfboy on VOD now.If you haven’t seen The City of Lost Children – it’s wonderful! With Olivia Dufault and Olivia Dufault.

Ten minutes into The True Adventures of Wolfboy, we were triggered.  You see, I usually shut off movies about bullying and Rob is super self-conscious about his body hair (he has the perfect amount of body hair), so when a young kid with hypertrichosis gets verbally abused by some douchebags at a carnival, tensions were high. About The True Adventures of Wolfboy The True Adventures of Wolfboy follows a young boy named Paul (Jaeden Martell) who has hypertrichosis, an affliction which causes you to grow hair, everywhere.  He’s living a somewhat sheltered life with his Dad (Chris Messina), who is encouraging him to face society, but not necessarily pushing him the right ways.  I love the idea that he wants so much for his kid to be strong and feel confident, but his approach really does just feel like he’s throwing him to the wolves (yea, I know what I said).  Desperate to find a place where he doesn’t feel so ostracized, his Dad searches out a boarding school for “unique children”.  In response, Paul runs off in search of his estranged mother (Chloe Sevigny) and answers to his family history.  Along the way, Paul’s experiences lead him to relationships that begin to shape a new perspective. About our interview with Martin Krejčí The most nervous we get for any interview is in the 3 seconds between when you see that the interviewee has joined the meeting, but not yet started their camera.  There’s this flash of self-doubt where you think “oh gawd, what if they think my face is weird, or that my hair is weird, or worse what if they think I look like a BORING MOM THAT DOESN’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT MOVIES.”  While I feel that way right before all interviews, these feelings are particularly ironic for talking about The True Adventures of Wolfboy. Martin Krejčí studied documentary filmmaking at Prague's prestigious Academy of Performing Arts before going on to hone his craft on countless critically acclaimed advertising projects. As a result he was named as one of the top ten advertising directors in the world. Martin is a visual conductor who orchestrates many disciplines through his work, and pushes the possibilities of any given script. His keen curiosity and theatrical influences have allowed him to experiment, perfect and surprise us throughout his career – reminding us that film-making is truly an art form. I’ll also report that at no point in our chat, did I get the sense that he thought my face and hair were weird. We hope you enjoy our conversation with Martin Krejčí and getting a behind the scenes look at the making of The True Adventures of Wolfboy. The True Adventures of Wolfboy is scheduled to be released on October 30, 2020, by Vertical Entertainment. Prefer video? Check it out here.

The true adventures of David Fairchild, a late-nineteenth-century food explorer who traveled the globe and introduced diverse crops like avocados, mangoes, seedless grapes—and thousands more—to the American plate. In the nineteenth century, American meals were about subsistence, not enjoyment. But as a new century approached, appetites broadened, and David Fairchild, a young botanist with an insatiable lust to explore and experience the world, set out in search of foods that would enrich the American farmer and enchant the American eater. Kale from Croatia, mangoes from India, and hops from Bavaria. Peaches from China, avocados from Chile, and pomegranates from Malta. Fairchild’s finds weren’t just limited to food: From Egypt he sent back a variety of cotton that revolutionized an industry, and via Japan he introduced the cherry blossom tree, forever brightening America’s capital. Along the way, he was arrested, caught diseases, and bargained with island tribes. But his culinary ambition came during a formative era, and through him, America transformed into the most diverse food system ever created.

DANIEL STONE National Geographic writer shares the true adventures of David Fairchild, a late-nineteenth-century food explorer who traveled the globe and introduced diverse crops like avocados, mangoes, seedless grapes--and thousands more--to the American plate ABOUT THE BOOK In the nineteenth century, American meals were about subsistence, not enjoyment. But as a new century approached, appetites broadened, and David Fairchild, a young botanist with an insatiable lust to explore and experience the world, set out in search of foods that would enrich the American farmer and enchant the American eater. Daniel Stone, a staff writer for National Geographic, shares this little known story in his new book, The Food Explorer: The True Adventures of a Globetrotting Botanist Who Transformed What America Eats. Stone takes readers on David Fairchild’s exciting culinary journey, from Java to Baghdad, Corsica and Bavaria, and many stops in between. Along the way, Fairchild was arrested, caught diseases, and bargained with island tribes. He also found love marrying Marian Bell, the daughter of Alexander Graham Bell. But his culinary ambition came during a formative era, and through him, America transformed into the most diverse food system ever created. Daniel Stone shares some of the things that Fairchild introduced to America, including: · Avocados, which he brought from Chile · Kale, the superfood of our time, which began as low-class food in Croatia · The Meyer lemon and Florida’s famous oranges, which originated in China. · Egyptian cotton, a botanical creation in Egypt as a result of America’s Civil War. · The cherry blossom tree from Japan, which has forever brightened America’s capital. · Mangoes, of which Fairchild collected more than 30 varieties, some still growing today. With stories taken directly from Fairchild’s unpublished journals and letters, as well as never-before-seen photographs from remote parts of the world, THE FOOD EXPLORER is as rich and satisfying as a ripe Georgia peach (which, by the way, came from China). ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Daniel Stone is a staff writer for National Geographic and a former White House correspondent for Newsweek and The Daily Beast. A native of Los Angeles, he holds degrees from UC Davis and John Hopkins University.

Hey, we’re back, and just in time for Memorial Day!  After a few weeks of packing, unpacking and moving, Mike Mitchell and Chas E are back with a new episode of At The Hops and a special Memorial Day theme.   On this week’s episode we crack open three beers recommended by MicroBeerClub.com including the Redfeather Session IPA from Black Raven Brewing Company, the Farmlandia Saison from Iron Horse Brewery, and the Yellow Wolf Imperial IPA from Alameda Brewing Company.  Jack stops into to tell us once again what to expect for a Saison or Farmhouse Ale, and Mike and Chas do their best to give you a quality rating of all three beers. We have some Memorial Day music activities too as we check out the Top 6 songs about soldiers according to music writer Andrew Kirell.  You can follow Andrew at @AndrewKirell.   Mike plays us a couple of original compositions and our beer enthused conversations include a review of the Stanley Booth’s book True Adventures of the Rolling Stones, a look at music lyrics trending towards stupidity, and review of Bob Dylan’s performance on Letterman.
