fWotD Episode 2937: Cher Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Tuesday, 20 May 2025, is Cher.Cher ( SHAIR; born Cheryl Sarkisian; May 20, 1946) is an American singer, actress and television star. Dubbed the "Goddess of Pop", she is known for her androgynous contralto voice, bold visual presentation and multifaceted career, while cultivating a screen persona that mirrors her public image by often portraying strong-willed and outspoken women. An influential figure in popular culture, her continual reinvention has fueled multiple comebacks over a career spanning more than six decades.Cher gained fame in 1965 as part of the folk rock duo Sonny & Cher, early exponents of 1960s counterculture, while also scoring solo top-ten singles such as "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)". In the 1970s, she topped the US Billboard Hot 100 with narrative pop songs "Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves", "Half-Breed" and "Dark Lady". After focusing on acting, she reemerged in a hair metal style with the albums Cher (1987), Heart of Stone (1989) and Love Hurts (1991), producing international number-one singles "If I Could Turn Back Time" and "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)". At 52, she reached a commercial peak with the dance-pop album Believe (1998), which introduced the "Cher effect"—a stylized use of Auto-Tune to distort vocals. The title track became 1999's number-one song in the US and the UK's best-selling single by a female artist. In the 21st century, she released her highest-charting US Billboard 200 albums, Closer to the Truth (2013) and Dancing Queen (2018), both of which debuted at number three.Cher became a TV star in the 1970s with The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour and her solo show Cher, both on CBS, attracting over 30 million weekly viewers. She gained critical acclaim after debuting on Broadway and starring in the film adaptation of Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean (1982). Transitioning to film, she earned two Academy Award nominations—for Silkwood (1983) and Moonstruck (1987), winning the Oscar for Best Actress for the latter—and received the Cannes Film Festival's Best Actress Award for Mask (1985). Other starring roles include The Witches of Eastwick (1987), Mermaids (1990), If These Walls Could Talk (1996, her directorial debut), Tea with Mussolini (1999), Burlesque (2010) and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018). Her life and career inspired the 2018 jukebox musical The Cher Show.Cher is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with estimated global sales of over 100 million records. She is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and the only solo artist with number-one singles on the US Billboard charts in seven consecutive decades (1960s–2020s). Her accolades include an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award, three Golden Globes, the Billboard Icon Award and the Kennedy Center Honors. Her 2002–2005 Living Proof: The Farewell Tour was the highest-grossing concert tour by a female artist at the time, earning $250 million—about $402 million in 2025. Beyond music and acting, Cher is known for her progressive politics and advocacy for causes including LGBTQ rights and HIV/AIDS awareness. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:18 UTC on Tuesday, 20 May 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Cher on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Kendra.

What happens when catchy tunes mask unsettling and problematic lyrics? Join Matt and Samer for a candid and thought-provoking journey through music history as we uncover the dark realities behind some of the most popular songs. We start with the Black Eyed Peas' "Let's Get It Started," originally rife with offensive language, only to be cleaned up thanks to the NBA's intervention. We then discuss Cher's "Half-Breed," reflecting on her series of similarly themed songs and how they shine a light on evolving societal standards and the need for mindful consumption of music. In this episode, we tackle the dissonance between melody and message by dissecting Sublime's "Wrong Way" and Benny Mardones' "Into the Night." Catchy, yes, but these tracks come with disturbing themes that raise serious ethical questions. Our exploration doesn't stop there; we also critique Genesis' "Illegal Alien" for its outdated portrayal of Mexican stereotypes and take a closer look at the flirtatious yet potentially coercive undertones of the holiday classic "Baby, It's Cold Outside." Through modern reinterpretations, we examine how the song's lyrics resonate—or don't—in today's context.Rounding off our discussion, we analyze the cultural insensitivity and lack of research that plagued pre-internet era songs like Band-Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas?" and George Jones' "The Poor Chinee." Misguided intentions and offensive stereotypes are laid bare, prompting us to question the responsibilities of artists and platforms in handling such content today. https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/cancel-these-songs/pl.u-8dqGjTZrAMJ1. Once again, public officials in Minnesota are considering changing the name of a lake which includes a derogatory term used to describe Native Americans. The Ramsey County Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing on Tuesday morning on the proposal to rename Savage Lake in Little Canada. The lake is two bodies of water, split by I-35E as it runs between St. Paul and I-694.The Little Canada Historical Society submitted the petition last year to rename the lake Lake Metis. Metis means “mixed” in French. The proposed new name reflects the area's history. Curt Loschy, head of the society, said back in the 1830s French Canadian fur traders and Native Americans set up their summer camp on the east side of Savage Lake.Initially, it was known as “Lac au Sauvages” which means “wild lake” in French. In the late 1800s, when English became the dominant language, the body of water was known as Savage Lake.“I've never liked the name of savage,” said Rockne Waite, a member of the Little Canada Historical Society. He has been spearheading the effort since he made his first phone call to the public works department in 2010 to find out how the name could be changed. 2020 Minnesota's 'Redskin Lake' could see name change 2022 New map restores Native names to northern Minnesota 2023 With new name in Dakota, St. Paul nonprofit pushes Indigenous renaming forward Waite says he attended city council meetings trying to get the lake changed. “And nobody knew how to change the lake names at the time,” he said. Waite, who is of Choctaw and Chickasaw ancestry and originally from San Bernardino, Calif., has lived in Little Canada since 1974. Waite eventually connected with Pete Boulay, a climatologist with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Boulay also works in the geographic names section of the DNR. The process to change a geographical feature like a lake, creek, island or mountain begins with a petition. It must have signatures from at least 15 registered voters in the county where the name change is to take place. Boulay recommends getting 25 signatures, just in case any are ruled out. From beginning to end, the name change paperwork has to go back and forth a couple of times from county to state and finally to the U.S. Board on Geographical Names. If the U.S. board votes to approve the name change, then the name change process is complete. If that sounds like bureaucracy on steroids, Boulay said there's a good reason for it.He said he wants the name to “stick” and not have to be revisited again. “And I also want to build a good enough case where the U.S. Board on Geographic Names would accept the name,” he said.Only one name has been rejected by the board and that was in 1994, before Boulay began in his position. Loschy said this is not the first request for a lake name change in Minnesota. “The reality is, this whole name change thing, there's been a lot of name changes to Minnesota lakes that have been insulting to the Native Americans.” 2015 Calhoun not the first lake with a controversial name 2019 DNR taking Bde Maka Ska name fight to MN Supreme Court According to the DNR there have been 121 name changes to geographical features in the state since 1991. Seventy-one of them have been lake changes. Twenty geographical features originally named after a slur used against Native American women have had their names changed. Eight of them were lakes. One lake in Washington County was changed from Halfbreed to Lake Keewahtin. A high-profile name change in Minneapolis led to a lawsuit against the DNR. The agency approved the name change of Lake Calhoun to Bde Maka Ska in 2018.If Lake Metis is approved, Boulay says it will not only be the first Lake Metis in Minnesota, but it will also be the first in the nation.

Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest and was honored at the Writers and Illustrators of the Future Awards Gala in Hollywood, California on April 28th. Her story, "The Last Dying Season," is published in the international bestselling anthology, L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 38. Brittany's story was released last year in Volume 38 but she was unable to attend the awards event due to giving birth to her 5th child. More recently, Volume 38 was awarded the Ben Franklin Award for Best Science Fiction & Fantasy this year by the Independent Book Publishers Association at their conference which was held in San Diego, California on May 5th. Brittany grew up as the only girl in a family with four brothers. She's reversing that trend with her own children—three girls and one boy. In 2009, Brittany graduated with her RN from Brigham Young University-Idaho. She received her BSN in 2010. Brittany has worked in both medical/surgical and rehabilitation specialties, but she currently enjoys work as a stay-at-home-mom. Brittany started writing at a young age, penning poems and stories, and filling an overstuffed nightstand with spiral notebooks, pens, and floppy disks (yes, those were still a thing in 2007). But after entering college, Brittany lost touch with her writing and didn't come back to it for several years. After having her third child in 2015 and needing a creative outlet, her passion for writing reignited. Once she found the Writers of the Future Contest, Brittany has not missed a quarter and has been a Writers of the Future finalist three times. She was a Published Finalist last year entering in the contest her story, “Half-Breed,” appearing in L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 37. As a winner this year, her story, "The Last Dying Season," is published in Volume 38. Brittany lives with her husband and children near the Snake River in Idaho, where she swears it looks like a wintered Narnia for nearly half the year. She has many pairs of fuzzy socks. The Contest, one of the most prestigious illustrating competitions in the world, is currently in its 40th year and is judged by some of the premier names in speculative fiction. The Writers of the Future Contest judges include, Tim Powers (author of On Stranger Tides), Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Herbert (Dune prequel series), Robert J. Sawyer (Quantum Night), Brandon Sanderson (Mistborn series, The Stormlight Archive), Larry Niven (Ringworld), Orson Scott Card (Ender's Game), Nnedi Okorafor (Who Fears Death), David Farland (Runelords), and Katherine Kurtz (Deryni series) to name a few. The Illustrators of the Future Contest judges include, Bob Eggleton (11 Chesley Awards and 7 Hugo Awards), Larry Elmore (Dungeons & Dragons book covers), Echo Chernik (graphic designs for major corporations including Celestial Seasonings tea packaging), Rob Prior (art for Spawn, Heavy Metal comics and Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Ciruelo (Eragon Coloring Book). Following the 1982 release of his internationally acclaimed bestselling science fiction novel, Battlefield Earth, written in celebration of 50 years as a professional writer, L. Ron Hubbard created the Writers of the Future (writersofthefuture.com) in 1983 to provide a means for aspiring writers of speculative fiction to get that much-needed break. Due to the success of the Writers of the Future Contest, the companion Illustrators of the Future Contest was inaugurated five years later. In the 39 years of the Writers of the Future Contest, there have been 547 winners and published finalists. The past winners of the Writing Contest have published 2,000 novels and nearly 6,300 short stories. They have produced 36 New York Times bestsellers, and their works have sold over 60 million copies. In the 34 years of the Illustrators of the Future Contest, there have been 394 winners. The past winners of the Illustrating Contest have produced over 6,800 illustrations, 390 comic books, graced 700 books and albums with their art, and visually contributed to 68 television shows and 40 major movies. royalties. This week we fondly remember our good friend and show contributor Chassis John Guerriero. John passed way too soon and we share some audio clips from past shows in his memory. Chris' Chrysler fuel injector fiasco comes to a happy ending, as does the "on the fly" timing adjustments he made to his Tracker. The trouble isn't over for him yet though, as he still has a P0507 idle circuit code to rectify. The show wraps with a classic show ending quote from John that (as always) entails food.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Tracey Goessel Although both a physician and an entrepreneur, Tracey Goessel’s true passion is silent film history. In 2015 she published The First King of Hollywood, a biography of Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., dubbed by The New York Times to be "a buoyant handspring of a book... one of the most delightful Hollywood biographies to slide down the mast in years.” The book has just come out in paperback in 2018. In addition, she founded the nonprofit Film Preservation Society, which has recovered and restored several silent films formerly thought to be lost or unavailable for viewing, including Fairbanks’ Mr. Fixit, The Good Bad Man, and The Halfbreed. FPS funded the software that enables the Library of Congress to scan original paper prints of silent films from the first decade of the 1900s, and currently the goal is to restore all 485 D.W. Griffith Biograph films that were made between 1908 and 1913. Follow the Film Preservation Society and Biograph Project on Facebook COMING NEXT WEEK: Tommy Kurzman Join us next week, Friday May 28th, when we’ll be joined by the Makeup & Prosthetics Designer for Mrs. Doubtfire: The Musical, Tommy Kurzman. Tommy’s makeup, prosthetics, hair and wig design skills have contributed to over a dozen Broadway shows including My Fair Lady, The King and I, and Fiddler on the Roof. With quarantine winding down, Mrs. Doubtfire begins previews in October and officially opens on Broadway December 5th. Prosthetics are especially critical in telling this story, and we’re excited to learn more about Tommy’s work.

The multimedia artist Anthony Hudson is best known around Portland for his drag queen persona, Carla Rossi — a white-faced clown of a queen who bills herself as the "ghost of white privilege."But now Hudson is going to drop the make up, or, at least the wig, for a full-length performance exploring his own identity as a half-white, half-Native American kid that's called "Looking for Tiger Lily," at the Hollywood Theater Sept. 30 and Oct. 1."I'm German on my mom's side and Grand Ronde tribal member on my dad's side," says Hudson, who grew up in Keizer, Oregon. "I wasn't raised with a lot of traditions from my dad's side, and yet I would watch 'Peter Pan,' and 'Peter Pan' kind of became how I related to this idea of natives through pop culture, through Tiger Lily."The opening of the show is Carla Rossi and a group of back up dancers reenacting the scene of where Tiger Lily and her Pickininny Indians are on the war path in the 1960 film of "Peter Pan" starring Mary Martin, Hudson's favorite version."Carla's always going to do the wrong thing: so she's going to open my show doing basically a minstrel number as Tiger Lily," says Hudson. "And then the rest of the show is me explaining where that came from and why, and ultimately, me pushing myself to do my favorite song from the Mary Martin musical, which is 'Ugg A Wugg.'"Of course, "Peter Pan" isn't the only pop culture phenomenon that influenced Hudson sense of his heritage. Along with the Disney movie "Pocahontas," the image on the Land 'o Lakes butter box, and Indian Halloween costumes, there was also Cher's song "Half-Breed.""'My father married a pure Cherokee, my mother's people were ashamed of me,'" he recites. "That song really hit me because, for the first time, I felt that somebody else was echoing exactly what I had felt all my life growing up. Except it's by someone who wasn't native...It is another example of a thing that doesn't come from the culture itself, and yet growing up with it in pop culture, I had such a response to it that it became integral to how I saw myself."In addition to back up dancers, Hudson also brings the "dominatrix of a piano player" Maria Chobin as an accompanist who has re-arranged the songs Hudson sings, a slide show of photos from his youth and family, and polished, self-made videos riffing off things like "Jurassic Park.""It's a cabaret, it's a play, it's a remixed version of story telling, it's a slide show," says Hudson, with a laugh. "This is basically my chance to invite an entire audience to a free therapy session with me."
