On this week's show we continue our discussion of Rick Beato's argument that music is too easy to make. We read your emails and take a look at the week's news. News: Dish to Bundle Netflix Free for Existing Customers Who Re-Up for 2 Years Fubo Launches on Xumo and Xfinity Flex Streaming Devices Redbox Owner Files for Bankruptcy Apple TV+ continues to grow in the US, this time overtaking Paramount+ Netflix Just Commissioned Its Largest Number of Titles in 3 Years (ICYMI) Other: A song about the HT Guys Haptique RS90: A True universal remote controller by Cantata — Kickstarter I Know You're Angry, So Am I.. Is Music Getting Worse? - A listener followup I just listened to your podcast episode “Is Music Getting Worse,” related to Rick Beato's YouTube video, which I also watched a few days ago. He raised some intriguing points, both about changes over the years with sampling, autotune, and quantization, as well as how AI will undoubtedly impact the industry as well. It's a fascinating and complex topic, and I wanted to share some thoughts. First off, my daughter is a professional opera singer, so I am very sensitive to the fact that I would not want artists who are deep in their craft to be supplanted by technology. Losing the human aspect altogether would be a tragedy for us all, whether as creators or as consumers of music. Selfishly, for my daughter and for all artists, I want humans to be respected and compensated for the obvious heart and soul that they put into their craft. With respect to AI, one major and well-founded concern is that relying too heavily on AI could lead to a homogenization of music, where unique, human-driven creativity could become overshadowed by algorithms, resulting in music that degrades to the mean and lacks soul.  Which I would argue has happened well before AI has come on the scene. Having said that, AI also has the potential to enhance music production by automating tedious tasks and providing new tools for musicians, which could free up artists to focus more on the creative aspects of their work. One aspect that often gets overlooked in these discussions is that music production isn't just about the creative performers—the singers and musicians. It involves a vast array of professionals, including audio and sound engineers, mastering engineers, and various other technical experts who all play a crucial role in shaping the final product. The Beatles used these talented engineers at Abbey Road to come up with iconic sounds that would never have been achievable by the members of the Beatles alone. So, one must ask, where is the line? As AI improves and enables the creation of individual tracks, or stems (currently most AI song generators provide fully formed sound waves), it could open up new avenues to innovate and bring different types of music together by mixing and arranging music in virtually unlimited ways. While the focus tends to be on how AI might impact the creative people who write, sing, and play songs, it's also worth considering how it could empower the broader community of producers. This technology might unlock new channels of creativity and collaboration that we haven't even imagined yet. In addition, for the creators, the use of AI song/sound generators as “sketch pads” for fleshing out songs, similar to how demo tapes were used prior to final recording, is a fascinating thought exercise. It could serve as a tool to experiment and develop ideas before committing to a final version.  Or to bring an idea to a group of real musicians to refine and play live. I'm a child of the 70s and 80s. I love Cheap Trick and the Scorps! I also love British new wave, Alt and Psychedelia. To “prove” a point, I used a service called UDIO. It is one of the services that you mentioned are being sued at the moment. I prompted the AI to give me song snippets in the style of British pop, Alt Rock, Psychedelia, etc. I took a bunch of these song snippets and stitched them together in a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), very much the same way that music producers currently “create” full-blown songs. I have attached the MP3 for your listening “pleasure” (take with a big grain of salt!). I share this with you as a simple example of what could be. It is not a great song by any means; it's derivative, it's corny, and it will never make the charts, but that's not the point. If it was streaming at a bar in the background, I wouldn't think it was horrible; in fact, it might be great background music for that setting. And this is version 1 of this new technology. What will it be like in the next 5-10 years? I've been listening to you guys for at least that long. Think about how the audio and video industries have changed so dramatically during that time, whether with the 400-pound TVs you guys referenced or in the quality of streaming vs physical media we have seen over that time. You guys questioned whether AI would be successful in music. I only have to look at throngs of people going to EDM concerts where there is no band, just a DJ playing “stream of consciousness” with audio loops to know that this technology will definitely have a place. The questions are, where, to what extent and how will the money flow?? Eager to hear your thoughts. Great show, and I appreciate your perspectives on all things home audio, video, and automation. The DAW (Digital Audio Workstation recorder), then plays back a few seconds of you speaking before that point (the ‘pre roll'), at which moment it starts recording again. This enables you to make your correction and continue recording.Doing this will speed up your editing and because you are picking up by hearing what came before, you are more likely to match your original read (tone, intonation, speed, accent and so on) and your re-record will be better. ANAK Creates Podcast | The Art of Audio Engineering, Music Production and Creative Business

There's really no such thing as "the perfect DAW" (Digital Audio Workstation), however, there is a great DAW to suit everyone. A DAW needs to fit your needs and your workflow, and above all else, it needs to help you create your best, fastest, and easiest. For every person, those needs are different. In today's episode, I talk about this, since there is so much miss-information out there from people claiming the "perfect DAW" or "the BEST DAW" which, may be the case for them, but may not be at all for your needs. Things to consider when picking your DAW for those getting started: 1. The Features you need (Now and in the future) 2. Your Future Growth and where you want to end up 3. Compatibility - The computer or system you want to use, and other gear like Interfaces, plugins etc. 4. Collaboration - Who are you surrounded by, collaborating with, studios your working with etc. 5. The Price - What you get for what you pay, and what the cost will be (in time as well) to learn

Richard Del Connor here. As the founder and record producer of Shaolin Records I've evolved from 4-track recording to 8-track to 16-track and eventually 24-track recording in 1979. This year, 2021, I've acquired Logic Pro X music software as my DAW Digital Audio Workstation. After a decade using ProTools I've only started using Logic Pro and have not mastered it yet. Frustrating... But hopefully by the time I finish my next Shaolin Records album project I will have mastered this music software. I've also acquired Kontakt digital music software program which enables me to use samples of orchestra instruments and record them onto my songs. I am "learning to play the orchestra." As a trombonist who sadly had to sell all his trombones to remain a flutist... (I explain this in the podcast). I am excited to have purchased two different trombone sample programs that are far more than the trombone samples you get when purchasing an "ensemble" or "orchestra" package of music samples. My first album using Logic Pro and Kontakt will be "Scorpion Resurrection" by Kung Fu Cowboy. I recorded most of these instruments in Tacoma Studios, my home on wheels for 6 years. So now I am assembling them into the Logic Pro app and preparing to learn how to orchestrate with digital samples. This album will be perfect for learning how to play these digital trombones. I was imagining the guitar parts as horn sections when I performed and recorded them. "TRUST ME" was recorded in the studio where Frank Zappa was recording "Sheik Your Bootee." That's what they told me the album was titled. I never owned. it. My band, THE RICH, recorded in that same Village Recorder studio at night when Frank's band was out of the studio. I was interviewed on a radio station a couple years ago and they asked me about Frank Zappa. I ran from the topic and didn't want to say anything bad about him. I LOVE the albums "Freak Out" and "Absolutely Free," so Zappa fans may someday hear my stories of working with Frank Zappa. Ironically, I told some stories on this very podcast but my new USB microphone was causing horrible sound problems that I discovered after recording this show. So those stories are going to remain a secret since I just threw those recordings in the trash.

The Future Of Podcasting Might Be Stealing From Instagram Stories [Episode 175]

Podcast Pontifications

No, this isn’t an article about using Snapchat and Instagram to promote your podcast. This is an article about packaging the contents of a single episode of a podcast by borrowing (read: stealing) a big part of Instagram stories. Which they stole from Snapchat, so turnabout’s fair play, right? Many podcasts are highly produced, often requiring more than 100 hours of work to put out a single, 30-minute long episode. Other podcasts require almost no extra work, where people just get behind the microphone and start talking. (Stop looking at me.) Between these extremes is room for many, many different effort-level approaches. One format made popular by newsletter publishers and Instagram influencers hasn’t yet taken off in podcasting. That approach is to create content “on the fly” throughout the day -- or sometimes the week --. Newsletter writers typically save the publishing until the entire “send” has been assembled, where IG stars publish each discrete bit as they go through their day. I think podcasting might be able to leverage those concepts, either as a new technology play or by Mechanical Turking our way to a new method of creating content that, for some shows, might be actually better than what they are doing today If you've listened to Podcast Pontifications for a while, you know I'm a big proponent of what I call Advancing Podcasting. That's the idea that software and technology should make podcasting better, not just easier. It also assumes that brand new business models will appear, which themselves necessitate new podcasting formats and approaches. This idea of assembling and producing content on-the-fly might be one such approach. Plenty of podcasts gather content on the fly. The work of James Cridland at PodNews.net comes to mind. James dutifully gathers the best podcasting news of the day, writes up his very popular daily newsletter, and also records a short “headlines only” version released as a podcast episode. He’s not alone. Many podcast producers gather news/information/inspiration throughout the day, write their notes about each element, adding in their own commentary on each or as a whole, create a final script, and then sit down behind a microphone to record the whole thing. Enter the Instagram Stories approach. What if, instead of only writing about each bit as it happened, the podcaster grabbed the microphone and narrated their thoughts on just that bit. OK, some writing is likely warranted. But once the writing for that bit is done, you’d narrate it. Just that bit. Were this really an Instagram Story, you’d publish that bit. And that doesn’t really (thankfully) work in podcasting. Instead, you would “publish” the bit in some sort of a queue or draft-mode. Today you could just save it locally. Though this presents an opportunity for some custom software that will enable this to be better. Rinse, repeat that five or six times throughout the day, and all that’s left to do is assemble those individually produced bits. That could be a simple as dragging your intro into your DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), maybe narrating an overview, dropping in your produced bits, adding a bit of transition music between each if you like, maybe narrating a recap, and then dragging in your outro. Done. It’s an interesting way to think differently about assembling content. Actually, it's really just a shift in how you work. Rather than being in “gathering mode” first, followed by “recording mode” and then finally “editing mode” at the end, now you’re doing all three modes at multiple times during the process of putting out an episode. Come to think about it, this sounds a lot like how some writing tools like Scrivener (https://www.literatureandlatte.com/) work. And it’s exactly how magazines and newspapers are assembled. Any of us could do this on our own right now, just saving off the pieces. But we need software to help enable this. A new Saas that lets producers Support this podcast

They might not know which skills are required or what kind of person they need to hire in order to end up with a good podcast. This is a time of opportunity for motivated podcast producers at all levels.Q: If I want to be a professional podcast producer, what do I need to know and be good at?I took a look at the job postings again to get a sense of the most commonly listed skills and requirements, and here's what I think are the essential skills for podcast producers.Essential Skills for Podcast Producers:Content creation and direction: You should have experience developing shows and episode content, writing scripts and stories, participating in brainstorming sessions, etcAudio recording and editing: You should know how to record audio that sounds good, how to put a project together and edit it in audio software, how to write narration (if necessary), add music, mix and master, and whatever else the production requiresWorking well with others: You should be able to work with—and possibly manage—producers, writers, audio engineers, editors, freelancers, guests, and so onAbility to work under deadlines: You can get stuff done and shipped on schedule (time management skills)Proactive problem-solving skills: There's going to be stuff they don't know, stuff you don't know, so you should be able and willing to figure it outLeadership skills: This means you have opinions and taste and are comfortable with setting goals and identifying how you'll measure successQ: What if I don't have all those skills yet? That's ok, I didn't have all those skills when I started producing podcasts either, and I'm still working on getting better at all of them.Study those podcast producer job postings for insights into what you should study, but remember that you don't need to be a master of everything to produce a great podcast, and the best producers are always learning on the job anyways. The important thing is to have a firm grasp on the basics and a willingness to work hard, experiment, take feedback and criticism, and keep learning. But since this is a prescriptive advice podcast, here are a few things I believe you should focus on if you want to increase your chances of landing a job producing podcasts. How to Increase Your Chance of Landing a Job Producing Podcasts1. Learn everything you can about recording and working with audioStudy all the various options for capturing audio in studio and live environments: Microphones, audio interfaces, soundboards, etc.Practice recording with different gear and in different locations. Learn how the gear and the room or environment changes the sound of a recording.Learn everything you can about how to manipulate and work with audio once it's been recorded. Learn about editing and post-production: EQ, compression, noise removal, limiting, and loudness metering.Learn how to organize and share your audio files, and how to backup and archive your finished projects. You can learn the basics in a few hours, but mastering recording and working with audio is a life-long project. That might sound intimidating, but I promise that it's actually a lot of fun (doing the same thing every day sucks).2. Learn pro audio software like ProTools, Logic Pro X, or AuditionMany people get started with podcasting using the free or easy tools like GarageBand or Audacity, but if you want to be a powerhouse podcast producer, you should acquire and master a professional DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) like ProTools, Logic Pro X, or Audition. While it's true that you can make a successful podcast with almost any editing program, the professional DAWs have useful (maybe even essential) features that the free or cheap DAWs don't, including non-destructive and multitrack editing and other features for tweaking or enhancing audio once it's been recorded.Professional production studios and other podcast producers are also likely using the one or more of these pro DAWs, so if you're serious about producing podcasts, try to master at least one of the three DAWS I listed above (Pro Tools, Logic, or Audition).3. Learn the most popular technology and software tools used by podcastersIn addition to your DAW of choice, you should also learn and be familiar with (if not good at) all the various apps and software used by podcasters and podcast producers. That includes:Recording gear & softwareWriting apps and other collaboration software for communicating with co-workers, developing episode ideas and scripts, show notes, and so onGraphic design apps for developing visual assetsContent management systems (websites) and podcast hosting software (like Simplecast)Social media platformsand whatever else podcasters are using to make or grow their showsYou don't have to master every single app or software in each of the categories I listed above, but you should be able to learn and use them quickly if needed. If you tell yourself you can't (or don't want to) learn new software tools, you're right, and you'll probably have a hard time being successful as a podcast producer. Keep an open mind and be willing to learn.4. Study and learn from other producers (especially the great ones)Producing great audio is a craft, and there are many great audio producers to learn from.Keep your eyes open for them. Seek them out. Follow them on social media, subscribe to their shows, read their articles and books, and take their online courses.Ask them questions when you get the opportunity, but analyze their work either way. It's a great way to learn about how things are done and may give you some ideas about things to improve or how to do things differently (and hopefully better).5. Don't wait to get hired, start your career as a producer todayDon't wait for someone to hire you: Go out and start your own show, or help your friends start shows and try to figure out how to make them successful. Do the best you can and try to make work you can be proud of.A good self-initiated portfolio will go a long way towards convincing other people to hire you, and you'll gain more experience (and probably even learn more) by doing instead of just reading or watching tutorials.Q: What if I don't live in one of the big cities where these jobs are?Good news! While it can certainly help to live near a large city like New York City or Los Angeles where there are podcast companies or businesses looking to hire podcast producers, you can help produce podcasts from almost anywhere. The internet has made it possible to connect with people all over the world and the rise of broadband and fast internet means you can collaborate in real time or easily send audio files back and forth over Dropbox or Google Drive. And you can certainly learn everything you need to learn about podcast production as long as you have access to the internet and a library. If you'd like to land a gig producing podcasts, I'd encourage you to invest time in developing the skills I listed earlier, but also in networking and connecting with other people in the industry or similar industries. For example, I've learned a lot from writers, web designers, programmers, marketers, managers, folks who work in the film and book industries, and many other kinds of professionals.Again, don't wait to get hired as a producer. Start studying and producing shows today.Have a question, or just want to say hi? Send an email to aaron@thepodcastdude.com. I love connecting with other podcasters.Happy podcasting!
