The Gear Acquisition Syndrome (GAS) is the all-consuming desire to expand our collection of gear. People became bankrupt, divorced and took suicide through their GAS.The idea is that we need the best equipment to make the best… The reason might be if our equipment is not good enough we are not good enough. Or we are unsatisfied and think that we can buy happiness, peace of mind… How does GAS start? We imagine:We have bought that top camera and after some time we see better cameras. There exist never any good camera for every application… Still, we think the grass is greener at the neighbors garden… Instead of shooting pictures we search the Internet for better equipment. Finally, we find the camera or lens and we imagine that we could be much better with that camera or lens. We get obsessed with our desire instead to shoot more pictures with our not perfect equipment. And then we read all the reviews of that particular lens… some are good, some are bad… We get paralyzed… What to do? Ignore the bad reviews and to buy it in any way or even on credit? We ring all shops to find our desired lens. Finally, we find the right shop. We drive our car like a madman. We arrive sweating this shop and ask to try that lens on our camera…But the shop owner denies… that is too risky….He gives us his camera and we can shoot only inside. We are so nervous that our hands are shaking and the pictures are blurred…Still, we know that this lens will change our life for the best….We start to bargain, and we can't concentrate on that, because we are too identified… Finally, we get that lens with a 5% discount. We feel guilty that we have bought this overpriced lens. And we can't shoot that awesome pictures like the Pros… We start to hate ourselves and our lens. After some time we accept our lens… We start to save money on everything because we are nearly bankrupt. What to do?When I am identified with any material good that I desire, I don't purchase anything. Because identification is always wrong for any material thing, not so with love or God. If you have a spouse or friend ask him to control your money.Give yourself the permission never to spend on one single thing over a specific amount.. like $300.Instead of spending money for expensive equipment travel around. And imagine to travel with heavy equipment is no fun at all… Instead to buy better equipment to learn on your specific subject. For instance lesson in music will bring more benefit than an expensive guitar or learn Adobe Photoshop instead to get better camera gear!Practice more. Ask yourself why you are not happy? Your money habits reveal a lot about you; your hopes, fears, dreams, and other deep personal truths you may not even be aware of.If we are aware of how, and why we spend money on certain things/problems/situations, then we can improve our lives. What do we spend on things, reflecting on our life? For instance, spending/craving for chocolate can reveal an unhealthy emotional pattern for seeking love, and compensation for our stress... A disability to save money, even when earning a high salary. The solution is to track and cut your expenses and find out when and why you want to spend money on meaningless things? For instance, spending money on luxury/fashion clothes and shoes. What do you want to emotionally compensate for?The reasons might be to impress your friends with how fortunate you are; to compensate for minority feelings; to build up artificial confidence/happiness, finding meaning in life. Solution:When you are depressed, exercise your body and that will improve your self-esteem and emotions; instead, go shopping. The fear of relationships and losing money. Instead of building up healthy relationships, investing money in proper assets...The fear of failure can be related to the fear of losing relationships and losing money. This can be an avoiding strategy to build up healthy relationships and to invest money in proper investments.Strategy:Look at your bank transfers for the last 6 months. The payoff from tracking our expenses can be huge.Look how much money you spend on shopping, transportation, entertainment, food,...When an expensive pattern is exposed, look what has this pattern to do with yourself?Be curious, and honest with yourself. It might not be obvious, but think over why have you done that spending? What clues can be related to that overspending? In which situations did you do that spending?See what emotional pattern emerges? We really want to face our fears and uncomfortable emotions that we cover up with shopping...For instance, if we spend too much money on our hobby... This is called the Gear Acquisition Syndrome. An expensive camera gear doesn't make a good photograph. Instead spending money on learning to photograph makes sense!!!!!Honestly ask yourself what you really want, what you are lacking, and what do you want to compensate for buying things? How would it be to spend money for a healthy lifestyle, travel, for yourself, your relationships...?Maybe you think that you don't deserve it?My Video: The emotions behind your money habits. https://youtu.be/ssYxEDN3asEMy Audio: https://divinesuccess.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/Podcast2/The-emotions-behind-your-money-habits.mp3

Photo Therapy Podcast Ep. 003 Hello and welcome Photo Therapy Podcast, brought to you by Oath Photography. I am your host Phillip Slaughter. I created this show to have in depth discussions with fellow creators, talk about the photography industry, gear, news, and other topics of interest. Today I want to talk about GAS or gear acquisition syndrome. It's easy to get caught up in the hype of new gear, trust me I do all the time, I love waking up in the morning, grabbing a cup of coffee and checking the B&H deal zone, checking youtube for any new photo gear reviews, or reading through gear rumors. But, this has got to be tamed. Getting new gear has to be a need, not a want… for the most part. So, as many of you already know I am a Sony Pro photographer, I have really loved the innovation and ground breaking systems they have produced. In fact my very first digital camera was a Sony. It was 2 mega pixels, and the most I could afford at the time was a 1 gb proprietary memory stick made by sony. But as Sony quickly dominated the mirrorless full frame market they also were initially producing and releasing new cameras and lenses left and right. Most all of them were fantastic. But not all of them fit my needs or budget. In the 1999 cinema classic the matrix, a wise old woman called the Oracle tells neo to “know thy self”. I think that is a fantastic place to start when it comes to gear acquisition. Before you purchase something, you need to know your self, know your budget, know your style, know your current gear limitations, and will this piece of gear help fill the gaps. Another thing to think of before purchasing a new piece of gear is to look at your recent body of work and figure out if your photos need better quality gear or if your technique and style need some attention first. I highly recommend you invest in your training, before you invest in your gear. When should you buy new gear or upgrade your current system. When your needs exceed the camera specs while fitting into your budget. But first lets look at a few news topics in the photo industry. NASA's Webb Telescope Delivers its First Images - https://fstoppers.com/astrophotography/nasas-webb-telescope-delivers-its-first-images-610244 Tourist Ignores Warnings, Falls Into Volcano While Taking a Selfie - https://petapixel.com/2022/07/12/tourist-ignores-warnings-falls-into-volcano-while-taking-a-selfie/ Nikon confirms it's increasing lens prices in the United States on August 1 - https://www.dpreview.com/news/7253846277/nikon-confirms-it-s-increasing-lens-prices-in-the-united-states-on-august-1 Gear Recommendations: Smallrig Gear. When I was first starting out, I had a saying. “I get 10% better with every new piece of gear I get.” Of course that statement is not really true or accurate at all. Sure some pieces of gear helped me gain more confidence, experience, and interest which all led me to playing more and getting better. On the other hand, some pieces of gear have done the opposite of making me better. But what gear have we purchased for inspiration? Why did we decide to get it? Which purchases have backfired? Does it have to be guitar related? Is there such a thing as too much gear? And… is there a way to remedy Gear Acquisition Syndrome? Well we will discuss this, and more on this group therapy session with Barber, on the Tweed Couch. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tweedcouch/support

A quick look at the tabs on your browser, or dip into your search history – Sweetwater, Reverb.com, eBay, Craigslist etc. – will present all the signs. In this episode Ian and Scott explain what it is, how you already have it and why that's no bad thing.

The emphasis on kit and keeping up with all of the latest equipment really does negate the one true aspect of filmmaking which we should all be focusing on more than anything else. It's also the thing our audiences love to see.Tune in to this week's episode of Once Upon a Timeline to hear an in-depth discussion on this controversial subject and my thoughts on where we should be putting all our attention.

What can we say about our friend Jeff Heisholt? He's a skilled and creative Canadian musician and keyboardist, who can definitely be considered a true ‘working’ player in the Toronto music scene. He’s spent the last 20 years on the road, throwing down mad ivory playing skills with bands and artists such as The Trews, Peter Elkas, Terra Lightfoot, Skydiggers, and Burt Neilson Band. We were really excited to sit down with Jeff and discuss his new synthesizer project ‘Current Fantasy’, a project he streams regularly to his Facebook channel, that while all 'Jeff', definitely channels many of his own musical heroes like 808 State, Aphex Twin, The Orb and Tangerine Dream. Most musicians suffer from chronic GAS. Gear Acquisition Syndrome, that is. And while both of us are actually quite minimalistic compared to most of our peers, the gear we do use, is obviously quite important to what we do. So in this bonus episode of the podcast, we want to give you an insight into what instruments, microphones, amps, software etc. we use to produce all the seminal hits you hear every month.

This time around we play doctor to offer prescriptions for your GAS. For those of you who might not know, GAS stands for Gear Acquisition Syndrome. Jonesing for new guitars and gear is something many of us deal with on a daily basis. In this episode we attempt to offer solutions to this ever growing problem. None of them have been successful for us, but hopefully you will get a laugh or two.In the second half of this episode we look at some musical collaborations we admire and a bit about the creative process.Thank you for your time and enjoy the show!
Photographers often fault the lack of gear as an excuse for why they don't take better photos. But Allen argues that sometimes acquiring more gear can actually motivate you to photograph more. As he battles his current bout of Gear Acquisition Syndrome, he coerced Sarah to begrudgingly talk about gear for a whole episode! What piece of gear motivated you to shoot more and better? And what purchased do you regret? Is talking about gear a gendered activity? And how many clouds need to be in the sky to prevent Allen from getting up early to do a timelapse?

This week on Armed Lutheran Radio we learn about the word “Marcionism,” a 2nd Century gnostic heresy taught by Marcion of Sinope. Marcion suggested that the God of the Old Testament and the God of the New Testament are different gods. One is violent and cruel, the other loving and forgiving. That heresy survives today at Clackamass United Church of Christ where Rev. Adam Erickson hates the story of Noah and the flood because the “God character” in that story is nothing like Jesus. Emellett ezerrel hódít a retró, jön a HD bakelit! Ami amúgy vinyl, de ez most itt tökmindegy. Mai fő témánk a Gear Acquisition Syndrome? Hogy mi ez? Elmondjuk! És valószínűleg te is beteg vagy! My apologies for the personal question, but we all suffer from Gear Acquisition Syndrome in one form or another, and it’s good to talk about it, especially if it aids in recovery. With Gabe Biderman and Todd Vorenkamp, we will discuss camera cycles from the digital and analog eras, talk new technology and try to understand why there is so much camera stuff to buy nowadays. Who is to blame for G.A.S.? The camera manufacturers, the retailers, the blogs, China!? Or could it be that imaging technology has improved so much in the past few years to truly warrant this welcomed illness? Either way, our guests will commiserate with your suffering and even provide a few simple cures for what ails you. Join us for an enlightening and entertaining conversation and while you're at it, shout us out on Twitter with #BHPhotoPodcast and rate our episode on iTunes. Thanks!
Ronen Goldman is from Tel Aviv and his work has made it to CNN by just posting in on reddit. He talks about how your idea will make you stand out and not how big the budget is. See his website at www.ronengoldman.com
