Hello Everyone! Joining us this week is our friend, author and journalist Luca Perasi! As he celebrates the publication of his latest work "Press To Play | That Unmistakable 80s Sound" chronicling the "hot take" "Love It or Hate It" record that divides McCartney fans nearly 40 years later! One of the more significant people Luca was able to interview for the book was esteemed 1980s Producer Hugh Padgham (Genesis/The Police/Phil Collins) among many others. We know the relationship and direction over the album took many turns and misunderstandings, especially where Eric Stewart comes into the picture. Luca brings up many hypothesis' for these missteps. The book also takes a very detailed technical approach with the album including detail on instruments used as well as the key people that worked on the album (Arrangers, Other Musicians etc). Luca also does a fine job of contextualising the 1980s Pop Culture zeitgeist through the mediums of video games and technology. Congrats again to Luca on his latest book! It's Outer Wilds round two as we're joined by composer Andrew Prahlow. We start with some of our favorite video game soundtracks, then get into Andrew's object, a Fender Dual Professional. We go deep on how using an amp in a room can help create memories of music-making, what it means to access the history of a piece of musical equipment while creating your own history with it, and how non-traditional compositions like Jon Brion's Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind inspired Andrew's approach to emotion in a soundtrack. For more info and to find Andrew's live dates: http://www.andrewprahlow.com/Buy yourself some OBNE: http://www.oldbloodnoise.comJoin the conversation in Discord: https://discord.com/invite/PhpA5MbN5uFollow us all on the socials: @andrewprahlow, @oldbloodnoise, @andyothling, @danfromdsfLeave us a voicemail at 505-633-4647!
Today we're joined by singer and multi-instrumentalist Courtney Swain, to talk about her first pedal: the Chase Bliss Blooper. We start with some voicemails about musical flubs because silly old Andy goofed the prompt in Discord, then move into the beginnings of Courtney's pedal journey and how it opened up her creative practice. We talk about processing voice through pedals, the different ways Courtney and Andy use Blooper and other Chase Bliss pedals, blending of effects in parallel, how the aesthetic of a pedal designer can inform the aesthetic of a performer, and how creativity isn't a well to dry up but a self-sustaining ecosystem. This week I am *on location* in the Nashville office of Musicnotes.com to talk with the hosts of their brand new podcast "Behind the Notes," Lucas Koehler and Jillian Shively! In addition to their podcasting duties, Lucas works for Musicnotes as a Product Management Specialist and Jillian as a Content & Production Assistant. They had a lot of great insights to share from their years of helping composers (like myself) publish their music. Composers, Arrangers, and Songwriters can visit the Musicnotes Marketplace to sell their scores on the Musicnotes website, and artists on YouTube can also look in to becoming a Musicnotes Signature Artist. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/garrett-breeze/support

Current arrangers including Oliver Nelson Jr., Steve Turre, Maria Schneider, Dave Rivello, and Lisa Parrott share their philosophies about music software, deadlines and enabling other musicians to sound good.
In the early days of jazz, musicians engaged in group improvisations, creating arrangements on the fly. As bands became larger, the writing down of parts for individual players became a requirement. Present and past jazz arrangers including Stefon Harris, Mike Abene, Ray Conniff, Bill Holman and Frank Foster speak about their craft.
Valley native Josué Eduardo López shares his musical journey and how he became a musical arranger.
My 2002 BBC Radio 2 documentary series, “The Arrangers”, featured this documentary and my exclusive interview with Composer/Arranger PETE RUGOLO. He studied with Darius Milhaud, and had a long association with the STAN KENTON orchestra, becoming one of the most influential composers in modern jazz. He went on to produce and arrange for stars such as June Christy, The Four Freshmen and Nat King Cole, and write brilliant scores for film and TV including The Fugitive, The Untouchables, and Richard Diamond. As A&R for Capitol, he signed and produced the Miles Davis project known as “The Birth of the Cool”, enabling music that created the “cool school” of jazz. Here is his fascinating story, in his own words, assisted by contributions from Gene Lees, Stephanie Stein Crease, and Bud Shank. PETE RUGOLO – EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW – Kenton, Cole and MILES! In 2001 I wrote and presented two series of “The Arrangers” for BBC Radio 2, examining the creators of iconic sounds in jazz & pop. The fascinating story of HERB ALPERT & the Tijuana Brass is told in interviews with Alpert and his musicians, John Pisano, Bob Edmondson, and Pat Senatore. The music is sometimes dismissed, but the band had fifteen #1 albums, many hit singles and became the 4th biggest selling act of their time – a time that included The BEATLES! It featured Robert Farnon, Neal Hefti, Herb Alpert, Stan Kenton, Quincy Jones, Pete Rugolo and Mexican arranger/composer JUAN GARCIA ESQUIVEL. His daring, explosive, utterly original arrangements fueled by jazz, pop, film and loaded with instrumental effects, led to a new style in the 1960s: SPACE AGE POP or SPACE AGE BATCHELOR PAD. Beginning as arranger for Woody Herman he went on to composing and arranging for Count Basie and Frank Sinatra. He wrote for film (The Odd Couple, Barefoot In The Park, Harlow, Sex & The Single Girl) and for TV (the phenomenal success of his “Batman” theme). Aaron and Drew continue their discussion about common arranging mistakes by talking about some common issues that arise while voicing chords or orchestrating for an ensemble. Edited by Thomas Lahren (https://www.thomaslahrenmusic.com/)
Edited by Thomas Lahren (https://www.thomaslahrenmusic.com/) www.vincemendoza.net One of the most versatile and prolific composer–arranger–conductors of the last two decades, multi-Grammy Award winner Vince Mendoza has written arrangements for a wide variety of pop and jazz artists, from Joni Mitchell, Sting, Melody Gardot, Elvis Costello and Bjork to Joe Zawinul, John Scofield, Charlie Haden, Al Di Meola, Dave Liebman, Randy Brecker, the Yellowjackets and the GRP All-Stars. His compositions have appeared on recordings by the likes of saxophonist Joe Lovano, guitarist John Abercrombie, drummer Peter Erskine, pianist Joey Calderazzo and singer Kurt Elling. As a leader, Mendoza has released 10 recordings for the Blue Note, ACT, Blue Jackel and Zebra labels, including 1997's Epiphany (with the London Symphony Orchestra) and 2011's Nights on Earth, featuring an all-star cast and members of the Metropole Orkest, which Mendoza has led as chief conductor for the past six years. Vince was honored with a Grammy Award for his work on the John Scofield “54” album on Emarcy records. It is his 6th Grammy and 34th nomination. He was also nominated by the Jazz Journalists Association as “arranger of the year”.

Edited by Thomas Lahren (https://www.thomaslahrenmusic.com/) Earl MacDonald's seemingly inexhaustible commitment to the jazz art form is apparent in his performing, composing and teaching. The former musical director and pianist for Maynard Ferguson serves as the Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Connecticut and teaches annually at UMass Amherst's Jazz in July program. The Winnipeg native earned a bachelor of music degree in jazz performance at McGill University and a Master's degree at Rutgers, where he apprenticed with Kenny Barron. A recipient of the Sammy Nestico Award for outstanding big band arranging, MacDonald has released five albums as a bandleader; two of which earned JUNO nominations for jazz album of the year. For his chamber jazz explorations on “Mirror of the Mind”, MacDonald was described as “a magical, musical alchemist of hip hybrids” (Owen McNally, Hartford Courant). Similarly, his large ensemble project, “Re:Visions” was touted as having “gone beyond where most big bands go, establishing Earl MacDonald as a major force in the world of jazz composition” (Dan Bilawsky, AllAboutJazz.com). Bryan Schimmel* is widely regarded as one of the leading and most diverse Music Directors, Arrangers and Orchestrators in South Africa. Aside from a story of success as a musician, his story is one of facing, overcoming and living with challenges, and beating the odds. Bryan has succeeded as a musician despite being a stutterer his entire life, as well as a victim of bullying, homophobia and a very difficult relationship with his late father. He is a recovered crystal meth addict and he's been HIV+ for around two decades. Bryan lived in the US from 1995 – 2002. When his life was at its most dire and desperate, he made a choice to return to South Africa to reclaim his life, reboot his career and became one of the most successful musicians in South Africa. Bryan talks to 'DrD' Dorianne Weil about that journey. * With a career of more than thirty years, Bryan Schimmel has worked in theatre, special events, recording and television across a full spectrum of music from rock bands to Big Bands, string quartets to symphony orchestras. pop to hip-hop. His theatre credits include music direction of PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT, ANNIE, JERSEY BOYS, DREAMGIRLS, CHICAGO, WE WILL ROCK YOU, RENT and THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE working alongside international creative teams. He co-created the original A HANDFUL OF KEYS in 1994 and played the first 350 performances. Most recently, Bryan arranged and conducted a 45-piece orchestra for five sold-out performances of JONATHAN ROXMOUTH: The Musicals in Concert.

Edited by Thomas Lahren (https://www.thomaslahrenmusic.com/) In May of 2019, Aaron and Drew attended the ISJAC (International Society of Jazz Arrangers and Composers) Symposium in Greeley Colorado. They sat down with world-renowned composer, arranger, bassist, and educator John Clayton to talk music, life, and everything in-between. Argue made his mark with his critically acclaimed 2009 debut Infernal Machines. 2013 saw the release of Brooklyn Babylon, which, like Infernal Machines before it, earned the group nominations for both GRAMMY and JUNO Awards. His most recent recording, Real Enemies, released in the fall of 2016, earned a third consecutive GRAMMY nomination and has been praised as “wildly discursive, twitchily allusive, a work of furious ambition… deeply in tune with our present moment” by The New York Times' Nate Chinen.
