He went on to produce and arrange for stars such as June Christy, The Four Freshmen and Nat King Cole, and write brilliant scores for film and TV including The Fugitive, The Untouchables, and Richard Diamond. As A&R for Capitol, he signed and produced the Miles Davis project known as “The Birth of the Cool”, enabling music that created the “cool school” of jazz. The former musical director and pianist for Maynard Ferguson serves as the Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Connecticut and teaches annually at UMass Amherst's Jazz in July program. The Winnipeg native earned a bachelor of music degree in jazz performance at McGill University and a Master's degree at Rutgers, where he apprenticed with Kenny Barron. A recipient of the Sammy Nestico Award for outstanding big band arranging, MacDonald has released five albums as a bandleader; two of which earned JUNO nominations for jazz album of the year. For his chamber jazz explorations on “Mirror of the Mind”, MacDonald was described as “a magical, musical alchemist of hip hybrids” (Owen McNally, Hartford Courant). Similarly, his large ensemble project, “Re:Visions” was touted as having “gone beyond where most big bands go, establishing Earl MacDonald as a major force in the world of jazz composition” (Dan Bilawsky, AllAboutJazz.com). Ranger and his father Michael formed the band in 2006, after a pilgrimage to the world’s foremost Gypsy Jazz event, the Django Reinhardt festival in Samois Sur Seine, France. The band has now released 4 CDs and performs over 100 times each year at music festivals, concerts in the park, swing dances, weddings and events of all sorts.  Past Shows have included Edmonds Concert in the Park, Seattle Art Museum, Djangofest Northwest, Best of the Northwest Arts Festival, Highline Classic Jazz Festival, Ethnic Fest Tacoma, and Vin du Lac Winery (Chelan). The band includes Ranger Sciacca (Violin), Dave Stewart (Mandolin), Mick Nicholson (Bass), Jeffrey Moose (Percussion), and Mike Sciacca (Rhythm Guitar). After winning their 2nd DCI world championship in 1995 with their show ‘The Planets,’ The Cavaliers drum & bugle corps fell to 4th in 1996 and dropped to 7th place with their 1997 production, “The Firebird.” The lowest the corps had finished since finishing 8th in 1984. The Cavies then moved back up to 4th place in 1998 and then received the bronze medal in 1999 with their show, “Classical Innovations.” That 1999 show also saw The Chicago Cavaliers taking home their fourth High Percussion Award in the history of the corps, all in the 1990s. In the year 2000… a design team came together that would come to dominate DCI for the better part of the next decade. Led by program coordinator Scott Koter, Michael Gaines designed the drill, Richard Saucedo composed & arranged the brass book, and Bret Kuhn & Erik Johnson composed & arranged the battery & front-ensemble books. The 2000 production, “Niagara Falls,” featured music from and inspired by Niagara Falls by Michael Daugherty, and Waves, from Soundings by Cindy McTee as well as original music by Saucedo, Kuhn, & Johnson. The 2000 season ended with The Cavaliers of Rosemount, IL winning their 3rd DCI world championship, in a tie with The Cadets, as well as winning the John Brazale Best Visual Performance Award, the George Zingali Best Color Guard Performance Award, and the Fred Sanford Best Percussion Performance Award. Joining me today are future DCI Hall of Famers Bret Kuhn and Erik Johnson. Bret served as Caption Head and Percussion Arranger for the Cavaliers who won 6 World Championships and 5 High Percussion Awards during his tenure. From 1995 to 2005 and 2008 to 2010, Erik Johnson was on the instructional staff serving on the design team as the front ensemble arranger and coordinator. Edited by Thomas Lahren (https://www.thomaslahrenmusic.com/) Earl MacDonald's seemingly inexhaustible commitment to the jazz art form is apparent in his performing, composing and teaching. Visit MacDonald's web site, www.earlmacdonald.com, where you can take a free online lesson, read articles and reviews, hear his music, peruse his blog, and learn more about Earl MacDonald's performances, teaching, and latest projects.

Aaron and Drew give 10 ideas for taking your music from your brain to the music community. Whether it's furthering your career as a writer or finding ways to improve or share with others, here are 10 ways that you can break into the scene. 1. Write every Day! It's just like practicing, the more you do it the better you get Even if it's terrible, forcing yourself to write helps you overcome writers block 2. Listen, expand your ear, always search for new sounds/genres/inspiration Everything else below relies on your ability to be a good musician/have a skilled trade Transcription and inspiration Stay inspired and keep learning from other people's music Push your musical boundaries 3. Study with a great Arranger/get a mentor Go to college Offer to be an assistant/help out Buy lunch for someone (we won't say no) 4. Start your own band Doesn't have to be big band or 4tet - think creatively! Write for the musicians you know, write to their strengths Common thread in interviews is that at some point successful writers got a group together to play their music 5. Record and share your creations Don't wait to write something, just do it and do it again. YouTube and Soundcloud – worked for Jacob Collier Social Media People often hire those who they have recently interacted with or seen their work, so if you shared a video or recording, you're putting yourself in people's minds 6. Website/Demo Reel Mention that a website almost never gets you a gig.  Being referred TO a website from a friend/a tune they heard already helps establish your credibility/competence in the craft 7. Network/Develop relationships - musicians/school directors/write for friends Never underestimate the power of a good hang Going into networking with something to show people is key CD, website, youtube, soundcloud, business card, portfolio, just something to give them Often times I'll look up someone and they don't have a website, and I have no way to gauge their music or who they are 8. The subject of this podcast is the local "gypsy jazz" band -- Ranger and the 'Re-arrangers'. They evoke the spirit of a Paris cafe and the raucous energy of a gypsy campsite. At the heart of their sound is Ranger Sciacca's violin.  The band's repertoire includes swing standards, traditional gypsy melodies, the music of Django Reinhardt, and Ranger's unique originals. Ranger and his father Michael formed the group in 2006, after returning from a Django Reinhardt festival in France. In the years since, the band has released 3 CDs and played over 500 shows. Violinist Ranger Scacca is at the heart of their sound. He and his father are descendants of Sicilian immigrants who played jazz in New York early in the 20th century. Ranger began playing violin at the age of six. The band includes two guitarists including his father Michael, a percussionist, bassist, and 5-string mandolin. Ranger and the 'Re-Arrangers' will be performing on Bainbridge on Friday, March 6th at the Island Gallery, 400 Winslow Way East, during the 6-8pm  ArtWalk. No charge. Then, at 7pm on Saturday, March 21st, they will perform at BIMA -- the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art auditorium. This performance will also feature renowned guitarist Neil Andersson. In 1993, Andersson co-founded the seminal gypsy jazz band Pearl Django, eventually recording 10 albums with the group. He is one of the Northwest's premier guitarists, and was elected to the Northwest Music Awards Hall of Fame. The BIMA concert will feature selections from the Ranger and the 'Re-arrangers' repertoire of American swing standards, traditional gypsy melodies, and the music of Django Reinhardt. Violinist Ranger Sciacca will provide the counterpoint to Andersson's guitar. Admission is by donation and space is limited. For reservations, email the band. Find information on the band's website. They discuss the role of the dance arranger, who works with the choreographer to take what the composer has written and changes it to fit the choreographer's vision of each dance. Jerry Mitchell talks about choreographing a dance for The Full Monty before hearing the music and then having the arranger fit music to it, while some choreographers will have the dance arranger write something before choreographing anything. Other topics include period research, the involvement of the composer, and the role of estates in revivals.
