In this episode of Curing with Sound, we speak with Dr. Ken Dychtwald, renowned gerontologist, best-selling author, and Founder of Age Wave, and Dr. Katsuto Shinohara, a leading urologic oncologist at UCSF. Dr. Dychtwald, who has dedicated his life to studying gerontology and the aging population, shares his initial shock upon being diagnosed with prostate cancer. He emphasizes the importance of men openly discussing prostate health issues, as many of his friends had experienced similar diagnoses. When presented with treatment options, Dr. Dychtwald was intrigued by the potential of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), a minimally invasive procedure he had previously advocated for in his work. Under the care of Dr. Shinohara at UCSF, Dr. Dychtwald underwent HIFU treatment, which precisely targets cancerous tissue while preserving surrounding healthy tissue. The procedure itself was swift, lasting less than 15 minutes, and Dr. Dychtwald was able to return to work the same day. He expresses his gratitude for the availability of this advanced technology and encourages others to inquire about focused ultrasound as a potential treatment option. Both Dr. Dychtwald and Dr. Shinohara express optimism about the advancements in medical technology and the potential for focused ultrasound to revolutionize the treatment of various cancers and other conditions, ultimately contributing to improved quality of life and longevity. A growing number of workers are reaching retirement age around the globe. At the same time, many countries face a worker shortage, especially in critical areas like health care. Ken Dychtwald, cofounder and CEO of Age Wave, says it's time for companies to stop overlooking this valuable labor pool, because AI alone won't alleviate the tight supply. He explains why many late-career people want to work longer. And he shares creative and often simple ways that companies can keep older workers engaged, including phased retirements, non-ageist recruiting, mentorship programs, and grandparental leave. Dychtwald is a coauthor of the HBR article "Redesigning Retirement."
Dr. Ken Dychtwald is an entrepreneur, author, lecturer, gerontologist, and psychologist. He is the co-founder and CEO of Age Wave. In this live recording Ken presents his memoir “Radical Curiosity” at the Human Potential Conference in Berkeley, California, sponsored by WCMI (West Coast Mindfulness Institute). You will find yourself mesmerized and inspired by Ken's story — and will want to run, not walk, to buy one of his books.Ken artfully discusses his meetups with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jimmy Carter, along with some luminaries in the field of psychology. You will learn about his storied (and often humorous) journey form Jersey to Big Sur and beyond. Very much like Forest Gump (the movie), Ken always seems to be at the right place at the right time to “influence or be influenced by the influencers.”Ken is an expert on aging and mind-body healing. His seminal book Bodymind has been translated into countless languages over the years (so if you speak Mandarin like his son Zak, also a thought leader in his own right, you are all set). Interestingly, there were some naked illustrations or pictures in the original edition that have been edited out (sorry Marjorie Taylor Greene). So I guess my original copy of Bodymind is a collectors item, much like my cherished Draymond Greene T-Shirt. Ken Dychtwald has acquired much wisdom on aging over the years so we began by exploring the upside of aging. He spoke of major historical changes in life expectancy and general attitudes toward aging. From there we discussed the central importance of purpose and the distinction New York Times columnist David Brooks has made between a career resume and a eulogy resume. Ken then followed with thoughts on the uses of free time and the importance of altruism, which can add years to one's life. He then spoke of retirement and his award winning Harvard Business Review article on retiring. He also had a number of significant observations on the American health care system, including ways AI might be used productively. He talked about how and why he became an expert on aging and ways that marketing and ads have changed to include older people, as well as how overall stereotypes tied to aging have morphed. We concluded discussing the X Prize Foundation (Ken is a trustee), and its commitment to finding ways to match health span to life span as well as the importance of humor (Your host even told a joke) and youthful versus useful. Conversations can often turn to the unexpected and this one did -- to Beyonce, Taylor Swift, TikTok and aging tied to Biden and Trump. Overall, a rich, energetic and highly illuminating dialogue!
When Betty White died in 2021, we were somehow surprised. Even at 99-years-old, it felt like she was gone too soon. Smokey Robinson just released a new album at 83 years of age. Martha Stewart posed in a bathing suit on the cover of Sports Illustrated at 81. How we think about aging is much different than it used to be, and Ken Dychtwald is one of the foremost authorities on these changing perceptions. For more than 45 years, he's been an original thinker on the lifestyle, marketing, health care, economic, and workforce implications of the age wave. In today's episode, he tells us that older adults no longer have to put up with being called “golden agers” because they're too busy leading vibrant, productive lives beyond traditional retirement. As shown by the growing unretirement trend across the country, happy retirees don't necessarily stop working. They just start saying “no” to the things they never liked in the first place. With a mindset of 'usefulness' over 'youthfulness,' Ken Dychtwald encourages older individuals to balance work and personal pursuits. He wants them to focus on the significance of life's moments and connections and reimagine retirement as a dynamic stage of life. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Get to know Ken Dychtwald, his Influence on the Age Wave, and his book RADICAL CURIOSITYFor those with an interest in marketing, health care, and the workforce, it's impossible to ignore the influence of Ken Dychtwald. A psychologist and gerontologist, Dychtwald is a best-selling author of 16 books on aging-related issues, including Radical Curiosity. He is also the founder and CEO of Age Wave—a firm created to guide companies and government groups in product/service development for boomers and mature adults. With more than two million people worldwide having heard his speeches to corporates, associations, social services, and government groups, let's take a closer look at who Ken Dychtwald is and why he is so influential today. Ken Dychtwald's Impact on Businesses Dychtwald's work centers around understanding how businesses can capture the attention of mature consumers as they age. He provides advice on how businesses can use this knowledge to create products that better serve mature consumers' needs while increasing their own profits. According to Dychtwald's research, older adults are some of the most affluent consumers in the market today – making them prime targets for any business looking to increase its customer base. His approach has been adopted by many companies looking to expand their product lines into age-specific markets as well as attract more customers from different generations. Dychtwald's Impact on Health Care In addition to his work in business, Dychtwald has also had a significant impact on health care systems across North America. He has argued that our current health care system does not adequately address the needs of older adults – particularly those living with chronic conditions or disabilities – because it fails to recognize their unique circumstances and challenges faced by caregivers. What women in the know already know, and what major news outlets are reporting with escalating frequency—the world is about to change. In the United States and in many nations around the world, women are on the cusp of new financial power—and evidence suggests that women will use this power to improve society in ways we can only begin to imagine. In Influence, renowned demographer and trend expert Maddy Dychtwald with writer Christine Larson expertly show this profound growth in female authority, a growth that is ongoing and already causing far-reaching effects in the workplace, the marketplace, and the home. For the first time in history a majority of women are earning their own money and paying their own money and paying their own way and, so, taking charge and making changes in their careers, their consumerism, their personal lives, their investments, and their activism. Through candid interviews, lively reporting and with exclusive research, Dychtwald reveals a huge cultural transformation that is about to occur—a true tipping point, after which more children will have quality health care and education, workplaces will be more responsive to families, men will experience new freedoms and opportunities to pursue more meaningful careers, and those corporations and nations led by women will thrive—as corporations and nations led by women are already doing today. Dychtwald and Larson give us a sneak peek at the world turned right-side-up by women. To read this book is to prepare one's self for an altered—and improved—cultural landscape to come.

Growing older has been cast in a bad light in our society and this has led to many negative effects that aren't only felt by older people. This is one of the issues that Ken Dychtwald tackles in his memoir, Radical Curiosity: One Man's Search for Cosmic Magic and a Purposeful Life. In this book, Ken compiles some of the most impactful life lessons he has learned from his greatest teachers, and today he joins us to share just a few of them. We begin our discussion on the theme of Ken's lifelong curiosity that has seen him in search of the irregular, the extraordinary, the wild and crazy, and the meaning of a purposeful life. Along the way, Ken didn't just hear the teachings of influential thought leaders, but also found mentors in many older people who taught him one of his biggest lessons: give life your best shot because before you know it, it will be too late! Over the years Ken interviewed many wise people who wrote on the subject of getting older, names like Dr. Robert Butler, Maggie Kuhn, Erik Erikson, and Betty Friedan. We take a deep dive into the lessons he learned from these voices about how our culture has missed the mark of what aging is supposed to be, to its own detriment. We talk about how aging should be seen as an ascent, not a descent, and the huge contributions that older people could make to society if their wisdom was seen as an asset, and so much more. So for an important conversation about getting back to the magic of aging, be sure to tune in today!Key Points From This Episode:How Ken arrived at the title of his new book, Radical Curiosity.Lessons from global leaders and what Ken hopes to achieve by writing his book. Why Ken is so curious and the subjects he is most curious about.Lessons about living without regrets and giving it your all Ken learned from older people.Life lessons about self-improvement Ken has complied in his book. The truest version of Ken Dychtwald: a man who loves his family!Lessons about the problems of ageism Ken learned from Dr. Robert Butler. The lack of representation of older adults in advertising and marketing efforts.Lessons from Maggie Kuhn about how capitalism is giving old age a bad rap.The value that elders can provide to their societies and how ageism is getting worse.Examples of how the aging field itself is part of the problem.Today's low standards for wellness, financial responsibility, or purposeful aging.Using our culture of innovation to reinvent what it means to age.Rethinking the arc of life to see aging as an ascent as well as a descent.Developing integrity in old age by integrating yourself and being valuable in society. How Ken's wife, kids, and parents influence his life and career. The top ten lessons we learned from Ken today!Links Mentioned in Today's Episode:Rethink AgingKen DychtwaldRadical Curiosity: One Man's Search for Cosmic Magic and a Purposeful LifeDr. Robert ButlerWhy Survive?Maggie KuhnErik EriksonBetty FriedanFeminine MystiqueNelson Mandela
Zak Dychtwald, founder of the advisory firm Young China Group, believes that the perception of China as a copycat and not an innovator is outdated. Instead, he argues the willingness of Chinese consumers to try new things is powering the country’s new innovation economy. Technology adoption rates in areas such as mobile payment are extremely high. He says non-Chinese companies can learn important lessons from this rapidly changing market and potentially use it to jump-start their own innovation engines. Dychtwald is the author of the HBR article "China’s New Innovation Advantage."
With this podcast, I’m excited to introduce a new theme, namely, conversations with experts in disciplines and issues that are in a simpatico relationship with Unconditional Healing issues and themes. I can think of no better way to start than by bringing on the leading spokesperson and thought leader for aging-related issues in the United States and many other countries in the world, my good friend, Dr. Ken Dychtwald. Over the past 40+ years, Ken has emerged as the foremost visionary and original thinker regarding the lifestyle, marketing, health care, economic, and workforce implications of the age wave. He is a psychologist, gerontologist, and best-selling author of 17 books on aging-related issues, including his most recent one, What Retirees Want: A Holistic View of Life’s Third Age, (an Amazon #1 bestseller in both the retirement and business marketing categories). Ken was the executive producer and host of the highly acclaimed PBS documentary, The Boomer Century: 1946–2046 which aired over 2,000 times on PBS stations nationwide, and his new Public Television special is titled Life’s Third Age, which is soon to air nationally. In 1986, Ken created Age Wave, a firm created to guide companies and government groups in product and service development for boomers and mature adults. His client list has included over half the Fortune 500, and Ken has consulted with every U.S. President since Jimmy Carter, (excepting our last president with whom Ken makes clear he had no involvement whatsoever). I could go on and on with superlatives for Ken, but you can check him out for yourself here. In this episode, we discuss Ken’s engagement with the Human Potential Movement in the 1970s at the famous Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, and then discuss his involvement with the holistic health movement, a term he and his colleagues coined. We also discuss his transition to working with older adults on the Sage project, which eventually led to Ken’s prescient warnings about the coming age-wave of the Boomer generation that would affect almost every institution within our society. We also delve into Ken’s work trying to eradicate Alzheimer's, the 21st century’s scourge of the aging population, and there is some positive news on that front.

Authors Ken Dychtwald and Robert Morison join ASA's CEO Peter Kaldes to discuss their new book, What Retirees Want: A Holistic View of Life's Third Age. In this book, they provide readers with unparalleled insights into the minds and hearts of the retired (and nearly retired) population, addressing the business case for reframing aging and marketing to retirees, the key values, dreams, and ambition of retirees, and innovations that are needed to connect retirees to better health, stronger community, and a renewed sense of purpose. ASA, Dychtwald, and Morison have a shared vision of not seeing older adults as a singular group of people, but rather as dynamic, changing, and vibrantly diverse people who are living in a variety of stages of life. What Retirees Want helps people, organizations, and companies better understand this so that we can better serve, market to, build for, and design for all people, no matter where they fall in their life course. We are so grateful that Dychtwald, a longtime ASA member and leader, is generously donating his proceeds from the sale of this book to the American Society on Aging.

Ken Dychtwald is a lifelong friend of Esalen and certified amazing guy. Besides being the best-selling author of more than ten books, he's a ground-breaking gerontologist, a psychologist, an educator, a professional lecturer (one of the best to ever pick up a microphone), a superb storyteller, a consultant to several White House administrations, an amazing father and husband -- and apart from all that, he knows quite a lot about Esalen back in the day. As Voices of Esalen begins to develop into a larger body of work, I'm finding that some of the holes in our history are gradually getting filled in. To that end, I got into the 1970's with Ken Dychtwald, and we dug into the work of Will Schutz, famous for his encounter groups, and the psychodrama technique that came with it. Ken and I also talked about his seminal book, Bodymind, which he developed in his early twenties, and how he came to be at the forefront of the holistic health movement at its inception. We also chatted about his lifelong work with aging populations, culminating with a bold initiative with the XPrize foundation that aims to defeat Alzheimer's. Definitely have a listen.
